Did Cal recruit big Breya Cunningham out of La Jolla Country Day? She is a Sophomore, in the portal from Arizona...
Breya Cunningham, 6-4, F, Soph. (11 ppg, 7 rpg, 1.3 spg)

Glancing at the "On3" database, a few players from Spain caught my eye. Not that "everybody knows everybody," but, with 2 Spanish women on the Cal roster, I wonder if that leads to another?
It doesn't appear that we did. Looking back at Raoul's WBB Blog pages, Breya Cunningham was the Class of 2023. At that time, we already had Michelle, Fatou Samb, Sela Heide and Dalayah Daniels on the roster. Well, we all know how that turned out.

Miles must already have NIL $$$$ lined up. She wouldn't bypass the draft just in the hope of finding a nice NIL offer.

Well, if not locked in, certainly nice choices. I say UConn, just to make a guess out of my rear.

As my daughter pointed out to me -she waits a year, she comes in with the new CBA in place for the WNBA...

I actually thought she'd be the first to announce.

I met both Zahra and Kamryn at the Race for Change event at Lake Merritt last Fall. They are roommates. And exceptional young women. So, I'm guessing some serious discussions were taking place last week during Spring break.

I wish her well. Maybe a little homesickness involved (from Brooklyn, NY).

I think with Puff coming in and the '26 recruit Zahara saw the writing on the wall. I fully expected her to go. I think she'll have an excellent college career somewhere.

Good point.

Plus, there are two other guards besides Puff Morris coming in next Fall.

About Grace McCallup…
"McCallup is a 5-10 scorer who can shoot the 3-ball as well as create for herself off the bounce with the pull-up jumper. She is a versatile perimeter defender at her size."

About Isis Johnson-Musah…
"Johnson can fill it up in bunches. She uses her length to get to the rim and will also knock down the spot-up 3. Johnson has quality defensive instincts to go along with her length."

I had a feeling King's announcement was coming. Our new class is so extremely guard heavy....

Another part of the tough challenges we face. If we bring in experienced portal players, they likely give us the best chances to win. But to keep promising freshmen, we have to play them and develop them. Mafua and King were our ESPN top 100 players in last year's class.

This reminds me a bit of our 2020 class. Despite all of the highly ranked players Charmin said Alma was the one most ready to play right away. This season it seemed to be Lola.

The transfers from our 2020 class didn't do any better at their subsequent schools. Michelle developed slowly but ended up quite good. I'm hoping Gabrielle improves as much.

The good news is the reason players are leaving seems to be limited playing time on a good team rather than suffering too many losses on a bad team.

If this were the WNBA, we could have traded them for a front-line player or a couple of draft choices. No such options here.

I hope we can bring in transfers with multiple years of eligibility like Ioanna, Claudia, and Marta. If money isn't a big problem our program should be pretty attractive.

Tess Heal, the 5-10 junior point guard at Stanford from Australia, has entered the portal. She played at Santa Clara her first two years. Proficient 3-point shooter.

Maybe an experienced point guard will put less pressure on Puff Morris.

Normal freshman? Maybe, but is a player like Heal looking for less than a solid starting position?
As a fan, I want a 5 star playing 33-35 minutes from day 1. I'm normally one of those laughing at those who are down on a freshman after a few games, but I think the bar is raised on a big time recruit. Not to say she isn't allowed growing pains.

Valid points, mb! Puff is a dynamo and not afraid among the taller competitors.

The unknown has caused me to throw names in a hat and hope for a match. We know very little about who Charmin and her staff are pursuing (even before and after our own portal announcements). Marta to the portal, in particular, has me shaking my head.

Not to downplay the availability of another guard, but based on the current roster situation Charmin has to be focusing in on getting a solid 4, stretch 4, and another post. Right now we're just too guard heavy.

I wouldn't call any of our guards heavy.

Just kidding, I get your point. Barring injuries or transfers we'll have Anastasia (PG/SG), Lulu (SG), Gisella (SG), Lola (SG), and Sofia returning plus three freshies (PG, PG/SG, and SG). Among them only Lulu has played more than a year but they seem to have length and talent (though it looks like Puff has more talent than length).

We'll have only one wing (a freshie), one forward (Claudia, if she is healthy and stays at Cal), and one post (Gabrielle). I'd like to see at least one more at each of those positions plus a combo F/P.

I hope we aren't throwing a scholarship at someone who shot .091 from 3 and only started 4 games for UOP.

Her name?

Back in November, we offered a 6'3 sophomore center from Eastern Arizona College (junior college).
Her name is Ashlynn Chlarson.

This is an update about her in the local Arizona newspaper back in mid-March:

The payoff is that Chlarson now has scholarship offers from no fewer than 25 four-year universities. The list includes Arkansas, Alabama, Cal, Tulane, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Old Dominion and Tulsa. Chlarson, who plans to study business in pursuit of an eventual career in real estate, said she'll announce her school choice very soon. The only clue she offered is that she'll be lacing 'em up for a school in "high Division I."

I don't have her name, but surely the staff can fins out as we didn't recruit very many 6' 5" Australians.

Jamie Kent is the woman from Pacific. Was a very good player for us, but really doesn't have a position at the level Cal wants to be at.

Potential panic time for Lindsay Gottlieb and the trojans?

When Juju went down during the NCAA Tournament, two highly regarded freshmen guards stepped up their game and helped the trojans get to the Elite 8.

Well, those two freshmen guards (Kayleigh Heckel, Avery Howell) have now entered the transfer portal. Earlier this week, espn had projected those two as potential starters next season.

Oh well.

SC has everything the Cal women's program dreams about. (Would be humorous if they aren't paying enough though)...
I think this just shows that trying to explain the whole what and why of women going into the portal is pretty much impossible..

I think Heckel's from New York, so she may head east. Also, her high school teammate, Kate Korval, a 6-4 center with great potential, is in the portal as well (from Notre Dame). They could be a package deal, but Cal's odds would not be good.

When I posted about her departure from $c, I never assumed (or suggested) that Cal would (or should) pursue her.

It was just to point out how crazy the transfer portal can be.
