Don't know if there is enough interest to have separate game threads, so perhaps just one will be enough!

Cal had its first exhibition against USF on 19 August at Haas. Cal won 3-0 but the sets were tight. 25-20, 25-23 and 26-24.
Game story here: Li, Taumoepeau Stand Out In Exhibition - California Golden Bears Athletics (calbears.com)

Notes: I didn't see the game. Just watched LiveStats intermittently.

Maggie Li and SamT were the main attackers. Maggie especially in the first set. SamT in the second set. But, the hitting percentage was the lowest in the second set. Indeed, SamT only hit 147 on 34 attacks Li hit 333 on 36 attacks. DeJardin was next but with only 12 attacks. Bears had only 10 blocks for the match.

Jensen didnt play much at setter with transfer Morningstar and tall Meader getting most of the playing time, it seemed. I couldn't tell from LiveStats which of those two was playing more - it seemed like they were being rotated in each set, rather than each being the primary setter in a single set.

My impression from stats - not having seen the match - is that the Bears may have trouble scoring. They need a middle blocker/scorer. MB Hamm did lead with 5 blocks, though. And Bears need a consistent third outside hitter - that was Dejardin this match. Don't know why SamT's percentage was so low, but that number is not going to result in many wins - especially if the other team is able to key on MLie (there also is an Ashley Li on the team).

Cal did not fold when they were tied at 24 after USF had caught up from a big deficit. I take that as a win.

I agree. That happened quite a bit last season. Maybe they've learned how to finish a match.

I do think that Coach Schoonderwoerd should have called a time-out sooner while USF was making that final push (7-0 run).

That comes with head coach experience, I guess.

Judging from the box score,
  • Serve receive had only 5 errors, with Sam having 3 of those. Hopefully, she'll improve as the season goes on.
  • Maeder had 4 kills out of 8 attempts. I assume she was the setter in the front row and hit the 2nd ball.
  • Last year's starter MB Sophie Scott didn't play because of injury (?), I'm guessing, since true frosh Thomsen Sawyer did play late in the 3rd set.
  • Looks like OH Maggie Li and Sam Tamoepeau along with Peyton DeJardin will be playing 6 rotations.
  • True frosh Sophia Johnson played a lot at DS (?), I assume.
  • Leah Schmidt is no longer listed on the roster.

This Friday's match at West Point will be on ESPN+. Cal at West Point

Grote and Schmidt were the two top scorers on the team last season. I guess that they both transferred. I knew that Grote did.

Judging from the box score,
  • Serve receive has vastly improved from last year, with only 1 error for the match.
  • OH Maggie Li and Sam Taumoepeau have played 6 rotations and done well with digs/serve receives.
  • Aside of true frosh DS Sophia Johnson, none of the other reserves played today.

Stats

So far, so good.

Today, the coaching staff played 13 players so evidently it was their choice not to employ too many in the earlier matches. Great kickoff weekend for Cal volleyball! GO BEARS!

easy schedule to improve Cal's confidence. will help them gel better as a very young team. going with the best players. maeder hopefully has improved her setting from last year. Morningstar was a excellent high school player so hopefully competition is elevating maeder's game.

So is Jensen really the third setter?
And what's up with Sam's hitting percentage? I guess it will always be under 200

looks like Paige played in relief of Maeder. good she is getting some playing time. If they can beat OC teams and play pac 12 teams tough, that will be a plus for this year. overall a young team. will probably need NIL money to keep maggie Li. Hopefully i can watch them on streaming. Go Bears !!

well it sounds like she is playing well. last year she was very inconsistent with a great set then poor ones. I am waiting to see them play on TV or in person.

Was at the game today. First time in Haas since the the pandemic. All the front line hitters played well & all had high percentages. Really impressed with Maggie Lee & Sam probably had her best game so far for the year. Of course, until we play some better teams difficult to judge how good this team will be. Good blocking today but this against a shorter team..

thanks OBear for the at the game insight. When we start playing conference games, that will be the litmus test. i am just glad they are beating teams they should. How was the coaching, strategy, subbing, from their new coaches ? I hope the team has enough NIL money to keep Maggie at CAL. Take care.

Is Maggie eligible for NIL $....isn't she an international student?

LodeBear, arigatou for the kind wishes! I've watched several of the matches via Cal streaming, and Maggie Li who can play 6-rotations is truly a great find. The other thing that stands out is Cal's serve receives and digs have greatly improved compared to the last couple years.

Cal plays undefeated St. Mary's (5-0) on Wednesday this week, which should be a good test for our young Bears.

I looked around for the 3rd coach Billy Allen but didn't see him anywhere. Could he been out recruiting or visiting future opponents?

Hi Harebear. quite honestly, i have no idea regarding a US student verses an international student with NIL money. She is a student athletie so i just thought NIL money would be helpful. Maybe someone with Cal Legends can make a comment. Good Question.

thanks, I found the streaming for Cal. so I should be able to watch the st marys match. well, good that their receiving and passing is better to stay in system. maybe that is also helping maeder with her setting. should be a pretty equal match. whoever plays defense better will win.

well his wife is director of operations for Cal. I would expect him to be either on the bench or somewhere monitoring the game. I will watch for him when their play St. Marys on wednesday.
