Noticed she was visiting at one of the football games. Amazing class and hopefully Durden has led us past the McKeever ugliness.

Her departure should had happened long ago! 10 years ago when we recruited the fab four & won the ncaa their freshmen year & I believe coach Teri was soon the Olympic coach, with all these accolades we should had been signing recruits like mad. Nada. We did get some single outstanding recruits here & there but nothing like 10 yrs ago. Think there were lots of negative recruiting going on with coach Teri. It's great to see us return to glory!

CAL WOMEN HIT AGAIN: #7 ANNIE JIA COMMITS TO GOLDEN BEARS FOR FALL 2025

Quote:

The Cal women have hit again on their historic class of 2025, with the 7th-ranked recruit in the country Annie Jia announcing her verbal commitment to the Golden Bears. This gives Cal commitments from the #1, #2, #3, #7, #13, and a handful of "Best of the Rest" ranked recruits.

No way I was saying to fire coach Teri. There were lots of positives during this time period of the these recruits, which included recruiting the fab4, winning the NCAAs in prior year, & even Teri becoming head & assist Olympic coach but the recruiting seem to hit a snag for those 10 after the fab 4. Yes we did get recruits & there were exceptional ie.Stadden, Ivey but IMO there were some reasons why many more higher ranked recruits were going else where. I did question this in previous threads about negative recruiting against coach Teri which I think was the reason why are recruiting stalled. I think the University should had (yes..shoulda, woulda, & coulda) investigated earlier and not let some investigative news reporter start the ball rolling 10 years later.

Good luck to Andrew following his brother to Texas, and I can understand the attraction for Andrew of swimming with his brother, and training with the Texas mid-distance freestyle group. While I would be surprised if NIL money was a factor, certainly Texas can offer a lower tuition cost and generous financial support.

So what does this mean for sister Alex ? I certainly don't know any of the Shackell's, but I understand Alex is very close to Claire Weinstein and Teagan O'Dell, and I have no reason to believe they are interested in swimming under Carol Capitani, the women's head coach at Texas.

Per Abby Weitzel from Ann Killion's column:

Two of her young teammates in Paris will be part of Cal's lauded incoming 2025 class. Claire Weinstein, from Las Vegas, finished second behind Ledecky in the 100 free, and Alex Shackell finished second to Smith in the 200 fly. Shackell's older brother Aaron, who also made the Olympic team, left Cal last spring after one year to transfer to Texas. But his decision didn't change his sister's choice.

"I'm super excited for them to be wearing a Cal cap after me," Weitzeil said. "Cal's my home. Best decision I ever made was coming to Cal. People don't want to leave here."
The pipeline from the Bay Area to the Olympic swim venue keeps on producing.

WAY TOO EARLY RECRUIT RANKS: GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2025

Top 20 (5):
#1 Alex Shackell, #2 Teagan O'Dell, #3 Claire Weinstein, #7 Annie Jia, #13 Elle Scott

Honorable Mention (0)

Best of the rest (3):

Top 20 (6):
#1 Alex Shackell, #2 Teagan O'Dell, #3 Claire Weinstein, #8 Annie Jia, #9 Elle Scott*, #19 Ella Cosgrove*

Honorable Mention (1):
Alexa McDevitt*

Best of the rest (0):
Not sure why Gracyn Aquino is no longer ranked here, as Aquino's improvements this past 2024 season include a 50.32 to 49.95 (100 Free), and a 22.68 to 22.65 (50 Free). Maybe the others on the list have achieved more significant time drops?

* = rank upgrade

========

Taking a quick peek beyond 2025, my way too early hopes are for prospective top recruits Rylee Erisman (brother Ryan's coming to Cal in 2025) & Kayla Han (used to swim for Alex's swim club, Carmel). Molly Sweeney (also from Carmel) would also be an invaluable asset. Charlotte Crush from Lakeside Swim will surely be on every recruiter's wishlist.

"RYLEE ERISMAN, WOMEN'S 50 FREESTYLE 24.62

Rylee Erisman became the 2nd-fastest performer in the girl's 15-16 age group at the 2024 US Olympic Trials in the women's 50 freestyle, finishing 5th in a time of 24.62.

Erisman set the NCSA Spring Championships on fire when she blasted a 13-14 NAG Record time of 24.98, shattering the 15-year-old mark set by Missy Franklin in 2009 at 25.23. In the interim to the 2024 US Olympic Trials, Erisman aged up and now competes for 15-16 NAG Records. While she hasn't yet cracked one of thosethough she's close and has plenty of timeher performances in the 50 freestyle in Indy were nothing short of outstanding"

https://swimswam.com/the-top-10-swims-from-the-2024-u-s-olympic-team-trials/

-------

"Han had a rollercoaster of an opening day in Indianapolis. After finishing just nine-hundredths shy of the top eight in the 400 free, two scratches ahead of her earned her a night swim. She capitalized on that opportunity, dropping over a second from her entry time and ultimately finishing 4th after coming in seeded 16th"

Teagan O'Dell & Elle Scott (2025 verbals) are on the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships U.S. Roster (as are 2017 rising stars Rylee Erisman & Audrey Derivaux and 2016 Kayla Han), plus Canadians Mia West (2024 commit) & Ella Cosgrove (2025 verbal), to be held in Canberra, Australia this August:

The Bear's will have a terrific class in 2025 if all of the verbal commits show up in Sept 2025.
The incoming class of 2024 lacks the star power and depth of the 2025 class, but features several high ranking international talents including two swimmers who will be representing France in the 2024 Olympic Games, butterflyer Lilou Ressencourt and sprint backstroker Mary-Ambre Moluh.
Of note, Katie Grimes. the top recruit in the 2024 class has yet to reveal her colligiate plans. I expect Cal to be in the mix for her talents, but I understand her handlers are looking for significant NIL $.

The men's 2024 recruiting class is potentially one of the best if all of our international recruits (Tomac, Okadome and Mazellier) actually show up for classes this coming September. If Coach Durden is able to get Lasco, Rose, Jensen and Seeliger to return for their Covid 5th year of eligibility, and Mewan Tomac's issue with his ISL participation is successfully resolved, the 2024-2025 Bears probably have their best chance for another NCAA championship in March 2025 in Tacoma. Our NCAA prospects for the men get somewhat more cloudy for 2025 and beyond.

Cal's 2025 class features several of the best young distance freestylers in Norvin Clontz, Ryan Erisman and Julien Rousseau, but missing out in the Heilman/Williamson sweepstakes is unfortunate, to state the obvious.
I do not see the 2025 class being able to offset the NCAA scoring loss of Lasco, Rose, Jensen , Seeliger and 2024 seniors Alexy, Hanson and Jett.

The Bowman/Texas combo has already reaped dividends with the transfers of prized recuits Aaron Shackell and .Rex Maurer. I expect the Horns to have very strong recruiting classes as long as Bowman remains their coach.I can only imagine the pressure and $$$ being used to get Max Williamson to decommit from Virginia.

Swimswam's revised ratings for the boys' class of 2025 (https://swimswam.com/top-20-swimming-recruits-in-the-boys-class-of-2025/) underscores my concerns about the Bears' 2025 recruiting class. Only a single recruit is listed in the top 20. Caiden Bowers # 18 is the third best butterfler in the class. Ryan Erisman, formerly the #11 recruit is currently the 7th fastest in the 200 free. Norvin Clontz has the dubious honor of being "the biggest faller in this class he's been stagnant for the past two years, with both his 500 and 1650 free times being from 2022."

While this is by no measure a poor class, with 8 recruits being rated as either top twenty (1), honorable mention (2) and "best of the rest (5), and the Cal staff is known for their ability to develop talent. But we will likely need some help from international recruits or transfers to keep pace with Florida, Texas, Indiana, Virginia, NC State in 2025 and beyond.

March 2025 in Tacoma hopefully will be Bear Territory.

Molly Sweeney (also from Carmel) would also be an invaluable asset. Charlotte Crush from Lakeside Swim will surely be on every recruiter's wishlist.

Way Too Early Recruit Rankings: Girls High School Class of 2026

1. Charlotte Crush Lakeside Swim Team Sacred Heart Academy Louisville, KY
The undisputed top swimmer in the class, Crush is already fast enough to be an NCAA 'A' finalist in three events and score in a fourth.
Last season, only Katharine Berkoff was faster than Crush' 100 back PB at the NCAA Championships, and Crush's PBs also would've placed 3rd in the 100 fly, 6th in the 200 back and 14th in the 50 free.

2. Kayla Han La Mirada Armada La Mirada, CA
Already fast enough to score in the NCAA in the 500 free, 400 IM and 1650 free, those three races figure to make up her future NCAA postseason schedule, and her versatility across every 200 makes her incredibly value for any program in dual meets. She's also a future member on the 800 free relay.

3. Molly Sweeney Carmel Swim Club Carmel High School Carmel, IN
An integral piece of Carmel High School's continued dominance in the IHSAA, Sweeney boasts NCAA scoring times in the 200 IM (1:54.58) and 200 breast (2:07.49)
She also set her elite best time in the 100 fly (52.24) there, and produced notable freestyle relay splits of 22.57/49.39/1:46.55. Sweeney is also the top 100 breaststroker in the class at 59.47
As a scoring breaststroker who can also contribute to the free relays, Sweeney's NCAA value can't be overstated.

4. Ava De Anda Riverside Aquatics Association Riverside Poly-tech High School Riverside, CA
De Anda is one of just two swimmers under the 49-second threshold in the 100 free, the most valuable event in college swimming, and will be flirting with the 48 barrier this season after ripping a 48.27 en route to winning the CIF state title in May. This class only has eight swimmers who have an NCAA cut from 2024, and De Anda's comes in the 100 free. The Riverside product won the 200 free with a PB at the same meet, going 1:45.98 to make her also one of two sub-1:46 swimmers in the class. She owns a blistering best time of 22.44 in the 50 free, and has split as fast as 22.06 with a flying startdrop-dead speed given she still has two seasons of high school left.

5. Kelsey Zhang Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics Saratoga High School Saratoga, CA
At this point in her young career, Zhang is faster in the 200 fly than the top-ranked recruit in the class of 2025, Alex Shackell, was last year. Shackell of course is coming off making the Olympic final in the event, so you can say Zhang is in good company. The reasoning behind the comparison is to illustrate how strong Zhang is in the event relative to most swimmers coming out of their sophomore year of high school. She's at 1:53.51, and the next-fastest in this class is…1:56-high. Zhang is more than a second quicker than the cut-off for the NCAA consolation final in 2024, and within striking distance of making the 'A' final. She's got three strong events with the 100 fly (52.08) and 200 IM (1:57.26) both just shy of the NCAA cutline, and her versatility is on full display with competitive bests in the 200 and 500 free and 100 breast.

Weinstein's best 500 Free time of 4:29.38 is actually 3 seconds faster than Bella Sims' winning time at this year's NCAAs, and would have topped Runge's #1 spot of 4:31.90 i on Cal's all-time list

And how about 2025 top recruit Alex Shackell's 1:50.15 which would have WON the 200 Fly title at 2024 NCAAs, not to mention surpassing Katie McLaughlin's #1 time of 1:51.09 on Cal's list (keeping fingers crossed that she will stick with her commitment)!

In the 100 Fly, Shackell's 49.49 also outdoes McLaughlin's 49.97 (top time on our All-Time list, and would have claimed the runner-up spot at NCAA Champs.

Shackell's best of 1:42.23 in the 200 Free would have earned 4th place at NCAAs this year

Way Too Early Recruit Rankings: Girls High School Class of 2026

Hoping a new topic will be started for 2026 Swim Recruits (male & female)?

Perhaps even a "way too early" thread for the 2027 recruiting class lol - at least on the girls' side, a few early standouts are Rylee Erisman and Audrey Derivaux, both competing in the 2024 Junior Pan Pac Championships that's currently in progress...

    Meanwhile, as a placeholder:
