Thanks UAC. These lists really show how valuable a recruit that Stanza Moseley will be for 2016. Can you imagine our sprint depth, to say nothing of our relays, if Stanzi decided to become a baby :bear:! Yes, Katie is more of a middle distance swimmer with great versatility in the IMs and breast events. Your next homework assignment is to compare Katie and Allie's swim times in the IMs and breast events. Hahahaha! Okay, maybe I will do it, but my format won't be as nice as yours .

200 IM
Katie 1:57.97 (3/14)
Allie 1:59.51 (3/14)

400 IM
Katie 4:09.43 (3/14)
Allie (no data)

100 Breast
Katie 1:02.63 (3/14)
Allie 1:02.89 (3/12)

200 Breast
Katie 2:13.21 (3/14)
Allie 2:14.58 (3/14)

I guess we will know more after the state championships next month.

Cheers tedbear for doing the hard work in researching those times for Katie Drabot vs. Allie Szekely!

A few updated data points for the pair, since Allie did break out a bunch of PBs at the Tom Dolan Invite back in Dec:

----------------

200 IM
Allie 1:57.68 (12/14)
Katie 1:57.97 (3/14)
Abbey 1:58.13 (12/14)

400 IM
Allie 4:06.33 (12/14)
Katie 4:09.43 (3/14)

100 Breast
Allie 1:01.34 (12/14)
Katie 1:02.63 (3/14)

200 Breast
Allie 2:10.22 (12/12), 2:10.74 (12/14)
Katie 2:11.07 (3/13)

----------------

Note also Allie's additional stats here:
200 back - 1:53.36 (12/14)
100 back -53.37 (12/14)

Her 200y back time is significant since that'd put her up there on this list:

Claire Adams 1:51.87 (12/14)
Erin Voss 1:51.95 (12/14)
Allie Szekely 1:53.36 (12/14)
Kathleen B. 1:54.30 (3/13)
Cierra R. 1:54.55 (12/13)
Beata Nelson 1:55.68 (11/14)
Courtney Mykkanen 1:55.96 (2/14)
Amy B. 1:56.33 (1/14)
Katie M. 1:57.60 (12/14)
Cat L. 1:59.81 (2/13)
Jasmine M. 2:00.52 (12/13)
Alyssa Marsh 2:00.95 (3/14)

Will be fun to see if Allie can go even faster at PA's HS States (Mar 11-14), or Katie at NCSA Juniors (Mar 17-21)...if they are planning to compete & taper for these competitions!

Stupid question #1000. I assume all of the marks above or in most of the post are long course time. Confirm? Also in the HS meets are they also in long course and not short course? Thanks in advance.

OBear, the times are in short course yards. Almost all high school meets are in short course yards.

Bears need another backstroker who can score in both backs. Baker almost certainly swims the 100 breast which effectively eliminates her from both the 100 back and 200 free (consecutive events).

Have to discount both Cierra and Voss in the 200 back since that's right after 1650 timed final. Going back to Georgia's endurance/toughness, Rachel Zilinkas swam both events last year, but that's a brutal double.

Here are the best times for the BACK events (short course yards).

BD - when considering performance in the pool alone, Claire would seem a great get based on your above assessment - scorer in both 100 & 200 backs + 200 free (which does fall before the 100 back on day 2, but at least there's the 100 breast separating the two) & 100 free (much tougher double here since comes straight after the 200 back on day 3), plus potential to be on 2 or 3 relays.

Or Beata as an alternate or backup selection for Dream Team 2016 as she's also a scorer in both backs, and on the cusp of scoring in the 50 free (i.e. relays). Not to mention having the fastest 100 fly time out of all current Bears + recruits on our radar...

On times alone, I'm really liking the looks of a superclass comprising of Stanzi Moseley, Katie Drabot, Claire Adams, Allie Szekely (breast, back & IMs), Becca Mann (distance + 400 IM/200 fly) & Veronica Burchill (scorer in 50 free + 100 fly + 100 free).

Beata Nelson & Erin Voss as backups if the primary candidates choose to go elsewhere?

Complemented by legacy/good fit with the team/academic standouts such as Alyssa or Courtney or Erika...

Of course it's much too early to firm up the list at this point, and in my greed I've already exceeded the probable 4-5 scholly limit with that ambitious shopping list haha. Just worried that some of these studs may end up on the Farm if we don't get them, and potentially play a future role in leading furds to the national title down the road (for example, Katie D. has already publicly expressed an interest in both Cal & LSJU)...

I'm with you on the first three (Stanzi, Drabot, and Adams). Add a sprint breaststroker and a distance ace. LSJU will be in the mix, but there will probably be more overlap with Georgia than usual. They basically have two classes to replace and a ton of money. Teri wants to keep the team at 23 swimmers so everyone can swim at Pac-12s. Meet limit is 24, divers count 0.33.

Haha! That makes three of us on the top three! I'm waiting for a late bloomer to show up this Spring or Summer. But a sprint breaststroker or distance star would be nice.

Don't think Teri will have enough money to bring in 5 immediate impact recruits, so the trade off is another high end distance swimmer or a sprint breaststroker. Cierra needs another training partner, LSJU has beefed up in distance, Georgia won't change their system, and another distance ace would be a bridge to a very deep distance recruiting class in 2017.

Sprint breaststroker would allow Baker to swim the back legs on medley relays. She could also swim the 100 back or 200 free at NCAAs. Would also allow Marina and Maija to concentrate more on the 200 breast since neither projects as NCAA scorers in the 100 breast.

Completely concur that sprint breaststrokers are a priority for Teri, as there will be a bountiful crop of distance talent in the following class if we get shut out on the likes of Becca Mann & co for 2016!

Only problem is, the really good ones are few and far between at the HS level. Being such a relatively scarce commodity, sprint breasties tend to be much sought after & wooed by college coaches, I'd imagine... Furds, Trojans and the likes seem to have had greater success than Bears in signing up breast studs in recent history, AFAIK - at least ones who could deliver on their HS promise.

Allie Szekely's solid enough in the 100 (slightly behind Marina's PB), but wouldn't be the go-to sprint BR specialist we are all clamoring for. Allie's better in the longer BR event (but still slower than Marina there), with her strengths lying in the 200 & 100 back (esp the former), backed up by her versatility in the IM events.

The only American breaststrokers in the 2016 class who strike me as immediate impact contributors would be Lindsey Horejsi, and Kennedy Lohman.

Lindsey is the class of the entire field when it comes to sprints in that stroke, as she's already a sub-minute 100 breast swimmer!

Though a minute slower than Lindsey in the 100, Kennedy's not exactly a slouch there, would represent an upgrade over Marina/Celina/Maija's times at that distance. Her competitive range does extend somewhat to the 200 distance unlike Lindsey, but that time is still a second-and-a-half from qualifying for the B final @ 2014 NCAAs. One thing to note is that Kennedy's PBs were achieved a while ago, Dec 2013, so there's always the concern that these young women may have already peaked due to physical maturation (hips) + other factors (Kristen Vredeveld comes to mind here)...

If we miss out on a sprint breaststroker for 2016, domestically & internationally, guess we can always shoot for a studly prospect from the 2017 class, such as Nikol Popov who hails from Abbey's swim club - she currently has a 1:00.67 in the 100 BR (12/14)...

Distance is the more pressing immediate need. Cierra will be the only potential scorer in the 500 and 1650 next season. Losing Missy, Klaren, Breed, and Nanfria also makes it unclear who besides Cierra will swim the 500 and 1000 in dual meets.

Baker is a potential scorer in the 100 breast and an upgrade on medley relays. Bears still can field up to 4 medley relay teams at dual meets.

Agree, Cierra's proving to be such a distance ace (to think she had started out as a sprinter on the National Juniors team), but she'll definitely need backup as the lack of scoring depth will be even more glaring than ever with those key graduations you had brought up + Missy going pro.

My worry's with the possibility of Becca signing with LSJU. Having the top distance stud in the 2016 recruiting class (Becca) join the ranks of the best female swimmer in the world (Ledecky) + the runnerup (Leah Stevens) to the top distance recruit of the 2015 class would radically transform furds' current Achilles' heel to a monster of a juggernaut which will present some daunting challenges to our national title aspirations in 2017 and beyond...

Back to the breaststroking dept - KHSAA state championships taking place this weekend in Louisville (Fri prelims, Sat finals). Our attention will of course be focused on the women's Pac-12s, but keep an eye on Kennedy Lohman's performance there to see whether she improves on or at least replicate her sub-minute 100 BR time, and how her 200 IM's progressing. Asia Seidt's another name to keep tabs on (her talents fall in the shorter back, fly & IM events). Leah will be competing also, and expected to sweep the 200 & 500 free before she gets put out to pasture on the Farm... :p

Perhaps wishful thinking, but see Georgia and Michigan as more likely destinations for Mann than the farm. More traditional distance programs and tight connections to NABC (especially Georgia). LSJU needs more depth in fly and back. Other than Haase, their junior class is mediocre. It's a big class (8 swimmers), so if they just hold serve quality wise with their last two recruiting classes they'll greatly improve with or without Mann. With that many open slots they can easily take Alyssa Marsh and Emily Eastin, although they'll still need a better backstroker than those two. Even with that many open slots, 3 backstrokers in the same class is a heavy lift.

Ummm, do they even have a HS State champs out there in Alaska? :p

Have to admit Carmel HS has spoilt us a bit with their recent Indiana Champs times, since most of the other states (other than CA and a handful of Atlantic Coast/NE states) have records which are x number of seconds slower than Indiana's in the majority of events!

Amy's group photos (quoted above) from that recruiting weekend in early Sept 2014 may provide us with some additional insights into the recruiting process. The tall brunette who's flanked by Amy & Missy in the 1st picture looks like Kirsten Vose, who swims for Rose Bowl Aquatics in Pasadena. So it appears that Teri did target a local sprint breaststroker after all for the 2015 class, alongside an IM'er from in-state (Ella Eastin who's by Katie & Kathleen in the pic).

Salo would go on to snatch up Kristen + Riley Scott for his breast dynasty, while Ella wounded up shoring up Meehan's vulnerability in the IMs. To Teri's credit :acclaim:, Bears ended up with the Dream Team, sporting a backstroker who's faster than both Riley & Kirsten in their specialty (breast), and swifter than Ella in hers (IMs) - Kathleen...
:bravo

btw, anyone with an idea of who the person sandwiched between Ella & Cindy may be? (turquoise tee, curly blonde mop in the 1st photo...next to Farida and in front of Missy in the 2nd)

Don't see Jenna Campbell in either group photos either...unless she's the Marina lookalike?

The curly, blonde girl is the Greek sprint breaststroker and long distance combo swimmer that we are signing this Spring! 😋 😬

Good sleuthing there haha! Heck, I even went so far as to plug the top 30 or so recruits from the 2015 class into Google Image, but failed miserably to find a visual match...

C winner Jenna Bauer is from Santa Rosa and was recruited to complement Cat Ladd, in and out of the pool. Visited the first recruiting weekend last season. Teri wants a local girl in every recruiting class (Breed/Nanfria, Grima/Acker, Li/Young, Ladd, Campbell).

-Builds ties to local swim clubs
-Allows an early commit to be at every recruiting weekend to work on future teammates/classmates
-In-state tuition stretches limited scholly money
-Under the radar local recruits (Shelley Harper, Nanfria, Grima, Ladd, Campbell are low risk/high reward if they develop. Harper was a multi-year captain who became an NCAA scorer as a senior

Wonder if Erika Brown would still fall under that category, now that she's transplanted to NC?

Or more likely a real local gal such as Maddie Murphy (Orinda), Moriah Simonds (Livermore), Chenoa Devine (Davis), Piper Brockley (Santa Rosa) or Chloe Isleta (Morgan Hill)...

With this devastating announcement from Stanzi, I feel that it's now even more vital that we recruit Katie Drabot and Claire Adams with greater urgency than ever. Amy can play a pivotal role here as she appears to be good friends with both of them!

Would even propose that we consider moving Veronica Burchill (Amy's teammate from CHS) up to the primary candidates list for Dream Team 2016. Her 50 and 100 free times are not too far behind Stanzi's (i.e. potential NCAA "down" scorer as a freshman). VB's forte doesn't extend up to the 200 free distance like Stanzi (which is why we really need Drabot & Adams), but she does happen to be already capable of scoring in the 100 fly...

UAC, I always knew that there would be a possibility that Stanzi might go elsewhere. I'm not downplaying her greatness as a swimmer, but my gut was always never completely sold on her unlike the players on the current Dream Team. In fact, I was fearing the worst that she might commit to the Furd. We really never had any connections to Stanzi, other than the fact that she is from California. Katie Drabot, on the other hand, already knows a handful of people on the team. I'm actually feeling fairly confident that Katie will be a Baby Bear. Claire has the Amy connection as you mentioned earlier, plus I think a few others from National Team meets. I actually think Stanzi going to the Trojans will be a better for Pac 12 balance. It's a little boring, when you know there are only two possible outcomes for the conference championship. With commitments this early, I don't think we had a chance. For this upcoming year, I would rather fill some needs in Breast and Distance, instead of taking all the top rated prospects. In fact, I think we go a little more international this year, than taking all the top US high school talent.

Didn't think she'd end up on the farm because she's homeschooled, but Bears would have gladly taken Stanzi since she's too good to pass up. She's not in Ledecky's league, but the Bears would have taken Ledecky even if they already had Cierra and Leah Smith.

You can quibble about the priorities, but needs are 50/100 sprinter, distance, back, middle distance, and breast. Just need to identify the next best sprint options.

Tom Shirlds verbaled early to 'SC before coming to his senses. Staff will stay in touch with Stanzi just like the men 's team will still work on Msxime Rooney. Bummer, but Abbey is still a 4 relay anchor. Still need another high end addition for the 200 and 400 relays.
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Bears need a 4th leg in the 200 relay to go with Abbey, Farida, and Amy. A resurgent KV might fit. 400 free seems set with Abbey, Farida, Baker, and Katie M. 800 relay looks like Cierra, Baker, Katie M, and a middle distance recruit or a distance recruit who can move down.

Although they're all valuable in individual events, it's pretty clear that Abbey, Baker, and Katie M could swim on all 5 relays for Cal. Teri may use Farida and/or Noemie on medley relays to free up Abbey and Katie M where they can help most.

BearDevil, please excuse my ignorance. How many individual and relay events can a swimmer swim in the NCAAs?
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
7 total events, maximum of 3 individual events. Missy could have been a 5 event relay swimmer. Same with Pelton and Stanzi. Farida and Bootsma could swim 4 relays (neither are competitive in the 200 free).

For sure Stanzi would have helped, but the team can still work around not getting an elite 50/100 sprinter in the next class. Depends on how much KV can contribute and would need to add 2 sprinters in 2017. Wouldn't be ideal, but definitely doable,
Bear8995

Thanks. And the way I understand it is, if a swimmer has an "A" standard, then they are definitely in, but can also swim any other event in which they have a "B" standard, right? While swimmers that have met only a "B" standard must be in the top 37-40 of a specific event in order to be invited. Anyone else could come as a relay only swimmer but count against the 18 limit so ideally you would have 18 qualified swimmers/divers who could potentially score in individual events AND swim the relays?
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Other than preliminary heat seed (top seeds swim last), invite via A or high B time are functionally equivalent. Up to 3 individual events with any B time plus relays.

Divers count 0.5 against the 18 cap, so teams with 18 swimming scorers (very rare) need to decide whether to include a diver or leave a scoring swimmer home. Also incentivizes teams to recruit 2 scoring divers.

Durden's teams frequently have more than 18 swim scorers, but Teri's teams have never been up to 18 invited swimmers, let alone 18 scorers. Strategies will change once improved diving facilities are in place.
