Don't know how many scholarships involved but they will lose Bing, Cheng, Kong, Greene, Klaren, Nanfia, Piehl, and Stipe.

Stipe was a 2014 senior. Taylor Young and Abi Speers left the team. Add Breed and Missy to the post-2015 losses.

Went down the roster and picked up the current Jrs and oops left out Breed and of course, Missy since she is only staying 2 years. Can't imagine young and Speers having much scholly money but with the boat load of others going, seems money should not be an issue!

Collegswimming.com is really good at sorting through hundreds of potential recruits, but they frequently screw up ranking the most valuable recruits. Their analytics don't assess relay value. No offense to Cierra or Mau, but Simone Manuel was the top recruit in the 2014 class and it wasn't close. College swimming ranked her ninth?!?

Teri needs sprint, middle distance, back, distance, breaststroke, and diving in the next recruiting class. She won't get all of them, but she's in decent shape with Mary Pelton, Riley Scott, Baker, Ella Eastin, McLaughlin, Ledecky, Sonia Wang, Abby Weitzeil, and Nora McCullagh. Three of those is probably a floor with four or five possible.

Here's the current recruit rankings from CollegeSwimming, FWIW: http://www.collegeswimming.com/recruiting/

Class: 2015

1 Ella F Eastin, CA

4 Nora E McCullagh, NC

23 Mary K Pelton, MD
39 Riley O Scott, CA
40 Abbigail Rose Weitzeil, CA

Looks like both Riley Scott & Abbey Weitzeil are massively undervalued here @ #39 & #40 respectively, and reckon Katie McLaughlin should be ranked higher than #7 ...

Weitzeil should be a borderline top 10 recruit. Riley Scott's starting to make a move. She's 1:00.52 in the 100 breast now and will drop time next season and potentially be an NCAA individual scorer as a freshman. Local girl who's extremely interested in Cal.

She broke multiple CCS records as well as a Missy Franklin prep national record (100 back?). CCS Swimmer of the Year. It appears that Stanford is closing the gap on Cal...

I think Stanford so far has done MORE than just close the gap on Cal. We were very even this past season and Stanford, albeit losing Lee and Dirado this year, has an extraordinary incoming class and already had Ledecky for the following year.

We need some really top incoming swimmers if we are to stay with Georgia and Stanford.

Not sure that Missy will swim any back at the 2015 NCAAs, but losing Klaren (on top of Tran and Au), Teri will need at least one backstroker in the next recruiting class. Clearly Kathleen Baker is a priority, but Amy Bilquist has to be on the radar too. Grew up in Arizona, now attending high school in Indiana. Tore it up in Santa Clara-potential scorer in both backs and the 50/100 free as a freshman, 4 relay swimmer. She's 6'2" and the sprinter/back combo mimics Georgia's Olivia Smoliga. Long course meters isn't the same thing as short course yards, but Bilquist's Santa Clara results were better than Baker, Pelton, Bootsma, Klaren, and Bing.

Very impressed by Amy's swims @ SC over the weekend. CollegeSwimming currently has her ranked #16 amongst the 2015 Recruiting Class (should be considerably higher IMO).

I thought Klaren was just a junior. What's the story behind her leaving early?
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Klaren is a junior and she's not leaving early. Sorry that wasn't clear.

Teri had five backstrokers (Tran, Au, Klaren, Pelton, Bootsma) in 2014 and she didn't replace Tran and Au with new recruits. Could be that she uses Missy in 2015, but she's an NCAA record holder in the 200 free, 0.13 off the NCAA record in the 500, and will be Cal's best in the 100 free. Barring addition via transfer or a late recruit, I think Missy swims the same events at NCAAs.

Five backstrokers was too many for a team that lacked scorers in both breasts and the 1650. After Klaren graduates in 2015, 2 backstrokers will be too thin, especially since Pelton and Bootsma both only swim one back event for the Bears. Baker and/or Bilquist would be huge gets in the 2015 recruiting class. Hopefully the Bears will add Orange County backstroker Courtney Mykkanen in 2016. Her dad swam for the Bears and won a silver medal at the '84 Olympics.

Recruiting starts in earnest next week and things will start to clear up about who's going where.

Wow, I'm kind of shocked. I thought she was the recruit mostly like to choose Cal. Didn't she attend many of our meets during the season? I'm a little concerned where recruiting is heading in this very crucial recruiting year.

Definitely a surprise, she attended every Cal meet (both women and men) I attended last season. Thought that Teri wanted an early verbal from a local who could help recruit the rest of the class. To be fair, thought Jenna Bauer, also from Sonoma County, would be the first commit last year but she ended up at Arizona. 'SC's Dave Salo is world class with female breaststrokers (Soni, Hardy), kinda like Nort with male breaststrokers.

Possible negative recruiting? With our unsuccessful results from our breast stroke recruits - Marina, Kong, and Young and even with Hardy trsfr'ing out it creates a negative image for our coaching of Breaststrokers, i'm sure our competitors brought it up...

No doubt some of that plays into it. Leverenz and Hardy were great breaststrokers, but others haven't panned out. Same thing's happening with distance-other than Lauren Boyle Teri hasn't produced a great distance swimmer. Diving is more a facilities than coaching issue.

Hardy turned pro, didn't transfer for swimming. Initially planned to stay and train at Cal, but wanted to go home. Yea, there's a rift between her and Teri and USC sells their breastroking, but she's only a breaststoker. We'll see, but I'm sure other schools are saying after Missy their toast and were saying we won without Missy and Hardy was a world record holder while at Cal. Hell, Kasey Carlson regressed while at USC.

:gobears:

That's an NCAA championship medley relay(s) from a single recruiting class: Bilquist (back), Baker (breast), McLaughlin (fly), and Weitzeil (free). Doubt Baker sees herself as an Olympic breaststroker, though she has a tough road as a backstroker (Missy, Pelton, Bootsma, Smoliga, Stewart, Bilquist) or IMer (Beisel, Leverenz, DiRado). Makes Missy, Pelton, and Bootsma all that much more special since it was more important for them to be Bears and swim for Teri when they could have swum events that better fit their Olympic ambitions elsewhere. Also gotta wonder how many 2015 grads will delay college entry until Fall 2016 to spend a gap year training full time for the Olympics.

Mary Pelton looks underrated. She's raced very favorably compared to incoming LSJU frosh Lindsey Engel (ranked #5 in SwimSwam's recruit ratings). Engel nipped Mary by 0.01 in the 100 free, but Mary beat Engel by 0.15 in the 50 free. Granted it's LCM vs NCAA's SCY, but Engel's swam a full program at Jr Nationals so it doesn't appear she's only focused on Sr Nationals.

Bilquist has torn it up, but most of the elite recruits (Baker, McLaughlin, Weitzeil) are much more focused on Sr Nationals.

Baker will take official visits to Cal, Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee. Surprised that LSJU, 'SC, and UVa aren't on her list ahead of Tennessee. Assume McLaughlin will also visit Cal and Texas.

Wanted to post the Baker info on the women's swim recruit thread, but I keep getting a 403 Forbidden message?!?

Including BearDevil's message here as he appears to be having some issues with posting it on this thread.

Fabulous then that Kathleen B seems to be seriously considering Cal but surprisingly not LSJU! :cheer (though she does have room for 1 more school-funded visit)

Lilly King would also be a brilliant get, she's ranked #9 by Swimswam and has already made the Junior Pan Pacs team that will be competing in Hawaii: http://swimswam.com/usa-swimming-releases-2014-jr-pan-pacific-championships-roster/

Lilly placed 6th @ the recent 2014 National Champs in the 100 breast (A final), and made it to the B finals in the 50 & 200 breast where she won the 50.
Her yards times are: 100 breast (59.67), 200 breast (2:11.17), 200 IM (2:01.00)

Back to Kathleen Baker & Katie McLaughlin - they are such BFFs that if one ends up coming here, chances are the other of the pair will be recruited as well (plus potentially Ella Eastin in the bargain as she's close friends with them). So hope Teri/Missy/Cierra/Boots/Liz/Caitlin will keep that in mind during the senior national team's staging & training camps in Australia for Pan Pacs the next fortnight (not to overlook Abbey Weitzel who also made it to the Senior Pan Pacs team)...yeah I know the coaches are supposed to place the national interest above their collegiate affiliations, but still...

Hope our famous Bears ambassadors didn't neglect to slip in a bit of an informal sales pitch to these 2 star recruits during the session lol

Or perhaps Kathleen's just checking out Jacob's haircut here?

Ummm, seeing as how huge of a cat lover Boots happens to be apparently (along with Kristen, Eva & others on the swim team), I hope they will take Kathleen to play with some kitties from the shelter when/if she visits the campus this weekend...

Pretty clear that Kathleen is Cal's number one priority in the 2015 class. If she's visiting next weekend, assume McLaughlin and Eastin will also visit. Kinda surprised that Baker hasn't scheduled 5 visits, but think it's between Cal and Texas. She's only visiting Tennessee to see one of her former club teammates, Faith Johnson. Georgia could be in the mix, but probably doesn't work for Katie and Ella. Texas also will have a major recruiting weekend next weekend, so it's a good sign that Baker chose to be in Berkeley instead.

Really interested to see who else visits. Seems like Cal made up some ground with Abbey Weitzeil relative to 'SC and Texas in Australia, so it will be interesting to see if Abbey is in Berkeley or Austin next weekend. Mary Pelton will probably visit too. Doubt that Teri wants to bring in more than 6 or 7 recruits the same weekend, so we'll have a pretty good idea of mutual pecking orders after next weekend.

You may have to count Ella out as she seems to be hanging out soaking in the Hawaiian sun & surf after Jr Pan Pacs haha

Well guess there's still the whole week for her to fly back to the west coast, so you could still be spot on in your prediction after all though

Another possibility for the Bears is Caitlin Casazza from North Carolina. Teammate/friend of Maija and Baker at SwimMAC. Caitlin was originally a top 30-40 2014 recruit and took trips last year (Arizona, Texas A&M), but she didn't sign anywhere and visited UVa last weekend (along with Mary Pelton). If Batchelor has left the program, Caitlin may be able to enter mid-year.

Have you heard anything about her possibly leaving? I know she was not in the picture with the Soph class during the weekend retreat but it was pointed out in the other thread via her mom's thread that she is in Berkeley. Hoping she missed out on the retreat for some other reason.
