With so many swimmers in off events, it's hard to draw any definitive conclusions, but Cal has way more depth than Wisconsin and won easily. Wisconsin is a pretty good team, but only Ivy Martin (sprints), Jenny Holtzen (distance), and Chase Kinney (sprints) could help the Bears. Badgers don't have any backstrokers (Missy, Naze, and Mau swept the 100) or breastrokers. Cheng didn't swim at all, Klaren swam both flys but no back, Breed swam the 200 fly, and Marina swam the 1000 free.

Pelton bulked up noticeably and is the best swimmer on the team right now. She absolutely destroyed the field in the 200 back, nobody was within 15-20 yards of her at the wall. Missy's off a bit. She won the 100 back, but got beat by Martin the 100 free. Think she's wiped out from Pan Pacs and is swimming too tentatively coming back from injury. Cierra's a little bit of a concern too. Teri needs to give both of them some rest after Utah and before the Georgia Invitational. Bootsma's not doing great, but she's hanging in there and coming around. Acker, Bing, and Piehl were all a little quiet.

Li's quietly steady and Noemie (pronounced no-emmy, not noamy) will be a star. Osman continues to improve. Same thing for Naze. Garcia's confidence is coming back. She swam the breast leg on the medley relay and then was thrown directly into the 1000 free. She came in second and swam a very strong second half. 500 free may be her third event. Won both breasts. Maija looked visibly frustrated/agitated after the 100 breast. Other than Noemie and maybe Mau, the freshmen are struggling to adjust.

Teri had some screwy relay line ups (Green and Grima) anchoring 400 free relays, but Grima's swim was the most inspiring of the day. She made up a huge deficit and was barely touched out at the wall. The whole team mobbed her after her swim and was cool to see an unsung swimmer shine.

Maija and Cierra were introduced consecutively before the meet and tried to execute a choreographed NBA style chest bump which failed miserably. Quality yucks. Heard a British accent behind me and realized it was Hannah Wilson. Was tempted to accost her about Siobhan, but my better Bear prevailed. Aquatics Gala is tonight, so a lot of alums are back in town.

Would not be surprised if the Bears struggle a bit at altitude in Utah, but Teri will give them a lot of rest/mini-taper before Georgia. That will be a very good data point on where the Bears will be in March.

Hey great analysis, thx! Really helps fill in a bunch of details and gives us an insightful view into some of the dynamics among the team that's noticeably absent from the dry, rah rah official version.

Heck of encouraged by Liz's current progress after a relatively disappointing 2014 NCs! Cheering for her maintaining the momentum to the National Div 1 Championships springtime and onto the 2015 long course season (World University Games etc). Hope some of this will ultimately rub off onto Boots as it seems at this early stage that she's still finding it a bit of a challenge getting back to her former glory days in the pool.

Very pleased tho for Marina starting to find her stride & confidence as her contribution will be key to the team. Would be so wonderful if the 500 was to become a newly-discovered strength of Marina's which she can focus on for her 3rd event (the associated training would also help her 200 br). No disagreement with your astute observations on Farida & Kelly's development, not to mention Noemie's exciting potential that's already coming thru so early on. Jasmine will also be one to watch.

Worried somewhat for Missy with regards to the possibility of lingering after-effects from her back spasms. She's a trooper though, and will always come through when it counts if it's meant to be. Would rather our bright & smiley swimming ambassador take it easy for now (when things don't count too much) and nurse her back to a comfy recovery, than go balls out right now training & racing which would risk triggering another scary episode... Peeking beyond the collegiate scene, Team USA will look to her and Katie Ledecky for inspiration at next year's World Champs in Kazan, followed by the BIG tournament of the entire quadrant: Rio 2016!

Warms my heart to hear of Alicia's turn to shine, and more importantly, her teammates' reaction and support! Her 51.09 outsplit the Badgers' A team anchor by nearly half a second and almost made up for Caroline having given up a whopping close to 3 seconds leading off - in fact only Ivy Martin, Liz, Missy & Rachael were faster out of the entire field. Too often us outsiders tend to overlook what and how much the unsung heroes of the squad bring to the team (Alicia, Eva, Taylor and so on), or recognize their vital contribution to Teri's family in less high key areas, as all the glitz & bling from an ability to score at NCAAs doesn't paint the whole picture really.

Will take time for the freshies to adjust, some more quickly than others. Not giving up at all on Cierra, as it's still early and who knows, she may be one of those who benefits massively from a bit of rest and surprise with a monsta taper in March. Even if Cierra may be unable to parlay her incredible performances at the international level from the summer into a similar level of success in the little pool in her first college swimming season (but I think there's a good chance that she will), just having her be a potential scorer in the distance events and taking some pressure off Missy in the 500 will be a welcome addition.

Hope Maija won't continue to be down on herself over that 100 breast time. She's not a sprinter at all, and traditionally better suited to the longer breast distance. Probably has very high standards and perhaps a bit of a perfectionist judging from her smart & artsy postings on social media. LOL at your mention of their "failed chest bump" - I was thinking it'd be more of a "head-to-chest bump" affair given their disparate heights haha...really wish I could have been there to witness the fun & shenaningans, maybe they'll post it on Instagram hehe

Ha you should have thrown all caution to the wind and just outright ask her...would have loved to hear Hannah's response You could also have contributed to the cause by slipping in a suggestion that she'd go to work immediately upon returning to HK convincing Siobhan to come to her senses by ditching Mike Bottom in favor of Teri :p

Just saw this comment from Pam on Swimswam - anyone attended the UT dual last week able to confirm this?

"One thing to consider here: I was at the Texas-Cal dual last week. (Fun meet, even in the rain.) Missy was helped to the locker room after the 500 free, apparently suffering from back spasms again. She definitely was in some distress. This seems to be an ongoing issue she’s having to work through. At the very least, perhaps it weighs on her mentally. Missy looked like she was having a blast up to that moment."

So, lost in all the NLI signing day excitement is the women's dual vs. Utah @ Ute Natatorium tomorrow (Friday).

The Utah women's swimming and diving team will host No. 4 Cal this Friday, Nov. 14 at Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. (1 pm PT)

The No. 4 Cal women's swim team will look to create a winning streak this weekend as they head out east for their second meet against a Pac-12 team this season, although the meet doesn't count in the Pac-12 schedule . Facing off against Utah, the Bears will attempt to defeat another Pac-12 team before the conference season officially begins in January.

Cal (2-1) is coming off a dominant win, 161-124, over No. 19 Wisconsin last weekend at home in a dual meet with the men's team. The Bears had spectacular performances from junior Elizabeth Pelton and sophomore Marina Garcia, who each won two individual races. Garcia was able to claim her season-best time in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, 1:02.93 and 2:15.29, respectively.

Sophomore Missy Franklin finished in first in 54.36 in the 100-yard backstroke with two Cal teammates behind her placing in second and third. The Bears also claimed both diving events with junior Anne Kastler claiming first in both the 3-meter and 1-meter springboard, giving Cal its first diving victory of the season. But Cal continued to show its lack of a long-distance swimmer so far this season, losing both the 1,000-yard and the 500-yard freestyle to Wisconsin junior Jenny Holtzen.

Cal will look to improve in these races and take advantage of a Utah team that is coming off a rough loss. The Utes were defeated by No. 13 Arizona, losing by more than 100 points. At the same meet, Utah was able to defeat UNLV by an almost identical score, 208-91.

But on a more individual level, against Arizona, the Utes failed to win a single event. They received many second-place finishes but were unable to overcome the Wildcats. One standout for Utah was junior Petra Soininen, who finished in second in both the 200- and 100-yard butterfly. In addition, she was on the Utes' 200-yard medley relay team, which finished in second as well.

Another member of the relay squad who performed well was senior Giuliana Gigliotti, who finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.48. Gigliotti could be a swimmer the Bears need to watch out for when Cal heads to Utah, as the Bears lack a natural sprinter.

Exciting news came for Cal coming into the meet as they signed four of the five top recruits for the 2015-16 season. This includes three swimmers who will be representing the United States at the 2015 World Championships: Katie McLaughlin, Kathleen Baker and Abbey Weitzeil. Weitzeil was a finalist in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle at the 2014 national championships, which is an area the Bears need more swimmers in. McLaughlin in butterfly, an important addition as there are currently only seven swimmers on the Cal roster who swim butterfly.

For now, though, the focus is on whether or not Utah can surprise the Bears over the weekend. The meet, which takes place Friday at 2 p.m. in Salt Lake City at the Ute Natatorium, will be the last Cal swims in until early December. The Bears will look to make this one an event they will want to remember.

Freshman Noemie Thomas led a Cal sweep of the 100-yard fly vs. Utah Friday.

SALT LAKE CITY The fourth-ranked California women's swimming & diving team defeated Utah, 186.5-109.5, Friday in efficient outing that saw the Golden Bears win 11 of 16 events on a day they traveled round-trip from the Bay Area.

Cal captured both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard free relay to open and close the meet, and eight different Bears claimed individual races. Only sophomore Missy Franklin, who prevailed in the 200 and 500 free, was a double-winner for the Bears.

"I felt we had a good meet overall," head coach Teri McKeever said. "More than times, we were looking for mental toughness. We talked about this being a business trip, coming in the morning, doing what we needed to do in the pool, and then coming home at night."

Following the 200 medley relay, freshman Cierra Runge won the first individual race by posting an 11-second victory in the 1000 free with a time of 10:08.83. Franklin then led a 1-2-3 Cal sweep of the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:48.92, with Caroline Piehl (1:51.90) and Camille Cheng (1:53.04) right behind.

Junior Rachel Bootsma made it 4-for-4 with a winning time of 55.27 in the 100 backstroke, before Utah's Stina Colleou broke the Bears' run with a triumph in the 100 breaststroke.

Sophomore Farida Osman just outreached Utah's Madeline Jamora, 23.74 to 23.75, to prevail in the 50 free before Cheng and the Utes' Giuliana Cigliotti were even closer in the 100 free; the two swimmers tied for first in 52.00.

Anne Kastler won the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 294.90 for an 11-point margin.

Junior Elizabeth Pelton continued with her strong fall season with another win in the 200 back, this time in 2:00.94. Franklin and Runge waged a battle in the 500 free, with Franklin coming out on top in 4:56.02 to Runge's 4:57.26.

Freshman Noemie Thomas (54.83) led teammates Bootsma (56.40) and Pelton (56.81) to the wall in the 100 butterfly before sophomore Celina Li (2:03.94) paced a 1-2-3 Cal finish in the 200 individual medley. Franklin took second in 2:04.50 with Piehl next in 2:08.41.

Cal completed its fall dual season with a 3-1 record. The swimmers next travel to the Georgia Invitational Dec. 4-6, while the divers will be at the Texas Diving Invitational Nov. 20-22. The Bears' next home meet is Jan. 30 vs. USC.

No. 4 Cal women's swim conquers Utah

By Alaina Getzenberg | Staff

They arrived. They swam. They conquered. And then they left.

The No. 4 Cal women's swim team made a quick trip to Utah on Friday, flying in that day and then leaving immediately after defeating Utah, 186.5-109.5. The Bears won 11 of the 16 events, a lower number than expected from the rosters of the two teams, as the Utes do not carry the same type of recognition as Cal.

The Bears were able to display their depth once again, as the team had eight different swimmers win events. In addition, Cal won both of the relays, the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard free relay.

The only swimmer to win two events for the Bears was sophomore Missy Franklin. Swimming 1:48.92, Franklin led a Cal sweep of the 200-yard freestyle. Seniors Caroline Piehl, 1:51.90, and Camille Cheng, 1:53.04, followed suit, respectively. Franklin was also victorious in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the event for her first time this season in 4:56.02. This was also the first time this season the sophomore has been the only Cal swimmer to win two events.

Another first came from freshman Cierra Runge, who won her first 1,000-yard freestyle in impressive fashion, defeating freshman Madelynn Meisel from Utah by 11 seconds.

Another freshman had an impressive victory, with Noemie Thomas winning the 100-yard butterfly for Cal and beating her junior teammate Rachel Bootsma by more than two seconds. Bootsma won the 100-yard backstroke earlier in the meet with a time of 55.27, with teammate Elizabeth Pelton, who has been dominant in the race the past couple of weeks, not competing in the event. Pelton did perform in the 200-yard backstroke, winning it by just under two seconds.

There were a few close performances in the meet in which the Bears were barely able to escape with victories. In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Farida Osman won by .01 over Utes senior Madeline Jamora. The event could not have gotten much closer between the two, which showcases the quickness of the event.

In the 100-yard freestyle, two seniors tied for the win. Cal's Cheng and Utah's Giuliana Gigliotti both finished the race in 52.00. The .5 in the final scores above are rare in college swimming. They can only come in the event of a tie. These two events in a row, the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, certainly added some extra excitement to the meet.

The Bears also were able to win one of the diving competitions, with junior Anne Kastler, continuing her strong diving from the week before, clinching the victory in the three meter diving by 11 points.

The win resulted in Cal closing out their fall dual meet schedule with a record of 3-1 before they start the real test of the season in January. The Bears hope their strong start will push them into success when it comes time to face the rest of the conference.

Cal completed its fall dual season with a 3-1 record. The swimmers next travel to the Georgia Invitational Dec. 4-6, while the divers will be at the Texas Diving Invitational Nov. 20-22. The Bears’ next home meet is Jan. 30 vs. USC.

Both, they flew in Friday morning and Teri will beat on the team heavily through next week before easing up on them Thanksgiving week and the following week leading up to the Georgia Invitational. Teri wants to get as many relays and individuals qualified for NCAAs as possible. After getting pretty much shut out in recruiting, I'd expect the Dawgs want to take some of their ire out on the Bears. Should make for some terrific racing.

Marina got smoked on her medley relay split. She was last in the field by 5 seconds. NCAA and/or Pac-12 rules limit the size of travel squads for dual meets. Maija may have passed Kong up in the pecking order, but she also missed the Florida trip so she may have an important Friday class that she can't miss too.

May be because of travel size, but most of the team swam their usual events. Missy skipped both relays and swam the 200 IM and Pelton swam the 1000 free, but everyone else swam expected events. Teri knows the team's kinda beat up so she wanted them racing under duress (altitude and training) and didn't go exhibition at all because she wanted them to gut out every race.

BD, I think that is a timer error unless Noemi swam the greatest butterfly split of all time 18.40.

Haha had noticed that, and not the first time either this season with regards to mis-reported splits!

The more pertinent question is - should we be dancing with joy at the fastest fly split ever from Noemi, or hang our heads in exasperation at Marina's slowest breast split ever?? :p

Thanks for the heads up, tedbear. Relay splits are notoriously poorly reported. Unfortunately Marina did swim a 1:34 100 breast at the 'SC meet last year, but I should have looked at all the splits.

2014-15 NCAA Women's SwimSwam Power Rankings: November Week 2 (Okay, 3) Edition

Morgan Priestley | November 17th, 2014

As fall invite season creeps closer, we're following up last week's initial 2014-15 NCAA Men's Power Rankings with our first set of NCAA Women's Power Rankings. Like with the men's list, we're using largely the same criteria in these rankings from last year, but given it's early in the season, we aren't putting everything into how the team looks in meets so far.

1. Georgia Bulldogs

No matter which way you slice it, the Bulldogs have the most complete, well-rounded team in the country. Distance talent galore (McDermott and MacLean are 1-2 in the 1000 currently), and the addition of Kylie Stewart bolstered their butterfly/backstroke groups handily. The breaststroke group is thin, but returning scorer Annie Zhu is good enough to make that a moot point if a majority of the team is firing on all cylinders.

2. Stanford Cardinal

As expected, the sprint group has been lights out (three in the top 8 in the 100 free, fastest 400 free relay by nearly 2.5 seconds). On the other side of the coin, the Cardinal's lack of IM and distance depth was exposed in their dual meet loss to Texas. Postseason meets favor Stanford significantly (5 relays instead of just 2, more emphasis on top-end talent than depth), but they still have some question marks.

3. Cal Golden Bears

The Bears haven't looked particularly good this season, and they still have a pretty clear breaststroke issue, but there's too much top-end talent to put them anywhere outside the top three (even with the loss to Texas and second place finish at the all-Georgia invite). Butterflyer Noemie Thomas is already proving to be an important pickup.

4. Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies dispatched in-state rival Texas after watching them put up a pair of impressive victories over Stanford and Cal. Freshman Beryl Gastaldello has been a difference-maker, and Sycerika McMahon is filling Breeja Larson's shoes admirably.

5. Texas Longhorns

Carol Capitani has this team rolling in her third year at the helm in Austin. Despite the setback against A&M, the Longhorns beat Stanford and Cal in back-to-back days this month behind national leader Gretchen Jaques and some impressive versatility from Madisyn Cox. Pretty good recruiting season for the 'Horns, too.

6. Florida Gators

With Elizabeth Beisel gone, this is Natalie Hinds' team now. The Gators also graduated individual All-Americans Ellese Zalewski and Alicia Mathieu, but Gregg Troy always has a couple swimmers come out of nowhere with a monster taper at the end of the year.

7. USC Trojans

Jasmine Tosky is beginning to look like her old self again, posting a clear nation-leading time in the 200 fly (1:55.59) and the #2 400 IM (4:12.34). Chelsea Chenault is living up to the hype (already 4:42 this season, three seconds ahead of anyone else), and Kasia Wilk is one of the country's most improved swimmers. However, they looked vulnerable in their loss to Arizona this weekend.

Author's note: in our book, there's a steep cliff beyond #7, with teams in the 8-12 and 13-18 spots very tightly bunched right now.

8. Tennessee Volunteers

The Volunteers certainly have some holes in their roster, as evidenced by their come-from-behind effort to tie Auburn and top Louisville this weekend, but Molly Hannis and Faith Johnson are still around to provide some serious firepower. As usual, Matt Kredich's medley relays look dangerous.

9. Virginia Cavaliers/Wahoos/Cavahoos

Courtney Bartholomew, Leah Smith, Laura Simon, Ellen Williamson, and Kaitlyn Jones is a great core to build a team around. The thing holding them back? Sprinters. The Cavaliers have just one swimmer (Ellen Thomas, 38th in the 50) in the top 50 nationally in the 50 or 100 freestyle.

10. Arizona Wildcats

Wildcat relays looked to be hurting coming into the year without Margo Geer, Alana Pazevic, Grace Finnegan, and Ashley Evans, but individual talent remains with returning All-Americans Bonnie Brandon and Tjasa Oder. Superb diving helps, and Taylor Schick has progressed nicely, but Rick Demont still needs some more sprinters to come through the woodwork for the Wildcats (who are a surprising 6-0 to start the year including victories over USC, UCLA, and Wisconsin) to stay up here in the ranks.

11. Minnesota Golden Gophers
12. Indiana Hoosiers
13. Michigan Wolverines
14. Louisville Cardinals
15. Wisconsin Badgers
16. Auburn Tigers
17. SMU Mustangs
18. North Carolina Tarheels
19. LSU Tigers
20. NC State Wolfpack
21. Florida State Seminoles
22. Penn State Nittany Lions
23. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
24. Florida Gulf Coast Eagles
25. Kentucky Wildcats

The past two weeks in Berkeley have been a whirlwind. We swam Wisconsin at home, participated in the bi-annual Aquatics Gala, flew to Utah to swim the Utes, and have learned at least three new dances in dance class. We've done this all while watching the temperatures steadily drop, the trees turn bare, and Starbucks begin to serve our coffee in holiday-colored cups. Now, it's this point in the season where we get a little break in competition and really get to focus in on our training.

This week marks our final full week of classes of the fall semester. Next weekend is Thanksgiving, the following week we travel to Georgia for an invitational, and then finals will be upon us before we know it.

Now, being a senior, this is a pretty scary and slightly saddening thought. It's easy to see the weeks pass without really noticing, but then eventually those weeks add up to a whole season. Just like that! In light of this, this past weekend I slowed down a bit and enjoyed one of my absolute favorite traditions of the year: my class's Thanksgiving dinner.

Ever since the eight of us moved into apartments and learned how to (kind of) cook, we get together every year to celebrate each other with a potluck-style "friendsgiving." It definitely fills both my heart and my stomach. Whenever we all get together, the memories start pouring out. We reminisce about freshman year, wonder how we've endured all of the crazy workouts, laugh at the inside jokes and muse about the future. We've all done this together. Every day for the last three years, we have fought, endured, thrived and sometimes failed, but we've done it all together. It's amazing the kind of bonds that come from this experience. I'm grateful for Camille's sweet compassion, Caroline's fighting and fiery spirit, Kaylin's jovial and contagious passion, Taylor's mood-lightening smile and humor, Yvette's understanding and listening ear, Catherine's adventurous soul, and Melanie's easygoing but feisty attitude. Each woman has transformed into the amazing person she is today, and I feel fortunate to have been a part of that process for each person, as I am grateful to have these women come along with me on my own journey. Can you tell I love my class?

I say the last two weeks have been a whirlwind, but really, it's always a whirlwind. A crazy, busy, extremely fulfilling whirlwind that never lets up. But it's worth it when the people you're with make it that way.

Winter's coming in with a force, so its time to button up and buckle down. It's time to get some work in before our fall invitational, and to earn some A's in school so Teri will give us candy (great tradition she throws out candy to whoever get's A's on assignments and tests! Talk about motivation!). Now, back to work GO BEARS!

Eva

Eva Greene is a senior from Falls Church, Va., while Maija Roses is a freshman from Durham, N.C. Eva and Maija will alternate producing blog entries each week during the season, with Eva writing her piece and Maija creating a video.

Teri would be all over a breast or distance transfer, but that not allegedly what's in the offing. Seems like there are always rumors of swimmers (both men and women) wanting to transfer into Cal, but immediate impact transfers (Katis, Fotsch, Raatz) are relatively rare. Since Teri's recruiting has exploded, she's been a lot more picky about who she adds, while Durden brings guys in and lets the chips fall where they may.

There is another Katis, his twin sister at Va Tech, but she's not coming to Cal. As noted elsewhere, breastsrokers are a rare/coveted commodity. Of the women breaststroke recruits discussed here over the last few classes, Baker's the only three event scorer plus more than 2 relay swimmer as a freshman. Lilly King and Heidi Poppe are single event scorers and Riley Scott is just outside scoring in both breasts. With Kathleen, Teri doesn't necessarily need a medley relay breststroker, because she's not clearly faster than Bootsma, Pelton, or Amy in the back legs. Bears definitely could use another breaststroker who could score in both individual breasts.

Sophia wasn't a huge surprise, she was briefly suspended from the program last Fall. Didn't quite understand why she was still enrolled at Cal if she wasn't swimming, but it's a lot easier to look for a new school from America than from New Zealand. Best of luck to her. Reasonably big hit this season since the team will be scrambling for points behind Georgia and LSJU, but largely alleviated if Noemie and Mau come through and completely negated next season if Katie is good as everyone expects her to be.

Florida Women’s Swimming Signs Huge Class of 2016

GAINESVILLE - The University of Florida’s women’s swimming and diving program inked nine student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to swim or dive for the Gators, head coach Gregg Troy announced Thursday morning.

Florida tapped the United States coast-to-coast and signed a pair of talented student-athletes from New Zealand for the best talent, landing a tremendous class, including Sophia Batchelor (Canterbury, New Zealand), Hannah Burns (Gainesville, Fla.), Abigail Howell (Clermont, Fla.), Georgia Marris (New Zealand), Tyla Martin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Mollie Pulte (Troy, Mich.), Katie Rourke (Glenview, Ill.), Sydney Sell (Frankfort, Ky.), and Emma Spilman (Belleair, Fla.).

Sophia Batchelor (Canterbury, New Zealand)

Batchelor spent this fall at the University of California on its swimming team prior to making her decision to move to Gainesville. The Canterbury, New Zealand, native has been a member of the New Zealand National Team (age group) since 2008 and the National Team (open) since 2010. Batchelor competed at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona and finished 11th in the 50 butterfly (26.34), 20th in the 200 backstroke (2:12.89) and 23rd in the 100 butterfly (59.46). In addition, she captured the 100 butterfly title and was second in the 50 fly at the 2011 Commonwealth Games. Batchelor gained her first World Championships experience in 2011 in Shanghai, when she placed 32nd in the 200 backstroke (2:17.06), 39th in the 100 butterfly (1:01.92) and 41st in the 50 backstroke (29.90). She has broken New Zealand records more than 100 times over her career.

Coach Troy on Batchelor:
“Sophia is a great addition to our team. She brings a wealth of international experience and will help us out in a lot of backstroke and butterfly events.”

LSJU's relays were pretty interesting too. Women made two A cuts (200 free and 400 medley) and didn't use their best breststroker (Olson on the medley). Once a team has made an A cut in any relay, all their other relays are into NCAAs. Simone may be even better than expected. Hu, Howe, and Poppe are all coming around. Engel is below expectations at this point and Lia Neal appears to have plateaued (albeit at a still pretty high level).

OTOH, men's relays aren't very good. 400 medley swam a mid-tier B time which won't get them in the field. 200 free relay didn't even make a B cut. Don't see a long tenure for Ted Knapp on the farm.

Well I'm experiencing such a contradictory rush of wildly conflicted emotions when it comes to Simone haha - a bit of annoyance that she never apparently considered Teri & Cal during the recruitment process, and chances are, may well spearhead Stanfurd ahead of us at 2015 NCAAs :headbang (though nothing is set in stone and we of course always have a fighting chance despite the odds!)

Yet OTOH find myself enthusiastically cheering Simone on when she dons her Team USA hat/cap, as Ms. Manuel represents a bright ray of hope for the US who for ages has not had anyone who had the potential to seriously challenge the Aussies & Euros in the sprint dept. :cheer

Dara Torres was the prior American hope in this dept but is now finally retired, and Natalie's mad underwater skills by themselves aren't enough when going up against sprint powerhouses of the current era such as the Campbells, Kromowidjojo & Sjostrom. Missy isn't completely out of the picture for a minor podium spot in the 100m free @ Rio (though not really a factor in the 50m) as she has been the fastest US swimmer (by a considerable margin) prior to Simone's ascendancy - but Missy isn't a sprint specialist nor focuses on those distances in her training, and also has a very heavy program that hurts her 100 free medal chances...

Re those furd super recruits coming quickly up to speed (excepting Engel) - great for them and probably not so good for us lol. Their relays will be quite intimidatingly strong & deep, but fortunately not much of an upside scoring-wise since they had already won 4 of the 5 relays last March. Comforting thought is the cavalry should be riding to the rescue next year in the guise of Abbey, Kathleen, Katie, Amy & co., though we'll still have to contend with our traditional Achilles' Heel in breast & distance, and LSJU will add uber recruit Ledecky (if she doesn't defer to prepare for Rio) + Ella and others. Lia possibly plateauing won't hurt us tho

New NAG Record, Sub-46 Split for Simone Manuel

http://swimswam.com/new-nag-record-sub-46-split-simone-manuel/

"November 21, 2014 It was difficult to wake up this morning and NOT think Simone Manuel's out-of-this-world sprint times from yesterday's Art Adamson Invitational were just a dream. The Stanford freshman simply was in a league of her own, as she surpassed her previous 17-18 Girls' NAG 50y freestyle record of 21.70, posting a shiny new record of 21.59. That time equals the NCAA Div I 50y freestyle winning time clocked by Georgia's Olivia Smoliga last season. To think Manuel cracked 22 in the 50y freestyle for the first time just this past March, and has avoided any hint of a plateau through a change in coaching, it is exciting to even think about the feats she seems primed to accomplish in the event the remainder of the season.

In another tenacious race during yesterday's finals at Art Adamson, Manuel also threw down the fastest women's 100 freestyle relay split in history as part of Stanford's 400 medley relay. 45.81 was the electrifying split Manuel clocked on the anchor leg, going beyond even the legendary previous fastest relay split of 46.07 pulled down by Megan Romano in the 400 medley relay at the 2012 NCAA Div I Championships. This is the first sub-46 100y free split by a woman..let alone one who has just begun collegiate career.

Simone Manuel prepares to conquer the 100y butterfly, 200y freestyle, and 100y freestyle events over the next two days of competition."

If Poppe had been placed on the breast leg of the A team instead of Haase, her 26.29 split from the B team tonight would have contributed to a combined time of 1:35.15 - good for 2nd at 2014 NCAAs behind Stanford's winning time of 1:34.95 at the championships!

Hoping we can respond to some degree at the Georgia Invite...will have to see..nervous...
