Cal had five student-athletes voted to the academic all-district team - most in the Pac-12.

BERKELEY Showing that they can succeed as much in the classroom as they do in their respective fields of competition, five Golden Bear student-athletes the most of any school in the Pac-12 have been voted to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII at-large team. Those earning a place on the squad are: Rachael Acker and Missy Franklin from women's swimming, Ryan Murphy from men's swimming, Gregory Bayane from men's tennis and men's water polo's Aleksa Saponjic.

The all-district team includes student-athletes from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, plus Canada, in all sports except football, volleyball, basketball, track & field, softball and soccer. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.30.

Acker, a junior who earned all-district and third-team Academic All-America honors last year, owns a 3.95 GPA as a French major and is on a pre-med track. She is a two-time first-team Pac-12 All-Academic choice, as well as swim coaches association Scholar All-American. This past year, she placed 15th in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2015 NCAA Championships and also earned All-American honors on the 400 free relay.

The 2015 NCAA and Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and 2015 Honda Award recipient as the top female swimmer in the country, Franklin has a 3.58 GPA in psychology. The sophomore won three individual events at the NCAA meet the 200 free (in an American-record 1:39.10), 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley leading Cal to the team title. In addition, the Scholar All-American was chosen second-team Pac-12 All Academic.

Ryan Murphy, the 2015 NCAA Swimmer of the Year, also earned Pac-12 Men's Swimmer of the Year honors after helping the Bears to a national runner-up finish. The sophomore has a 3.78 GPA and has not yet declared his major. He is a two-time NCAA champion in the 100 and 200 back and set an NCAA record of 44.17 in the 100 back leading off the Bears' 400 medley relay.

Bayane, a senior with a 3.64 GPA in economics, concluded his college tennis career earlier this month with a victory in his last match vs. Texas in the NCAA Tournament second round. He finished the season with a 26-12 record in singles. In the classroom, Bayane received the 2015 Golden Bear Award for posting his team's top GPA and twice earning spots on the Pac-12 All-Academic first team.

Saponjic earned a bronze medal as a member of the Serbian Olympic team at the 2012 London Olympics and ended his Cal career as a four-time All-American. He led the Bears with 67 goals this past fall and totaled 186 goals over the past four years. He is graduating from Cal with a 3.52 GPA in business administration.

To earn a spot on the all-academic teams, recipients must be a starter or important reserve and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. Each of the student-athletes is now eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America ballot, where first, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Well nowadays the truly personal photos & comments are shared privately with close friends thru Snapchat, protected tweets, private user accounts on Insta & FB etc. The ones above were shared via public social media sources that everyone has ready access to

Wouldn't be a surprise actually if more than a few are using these photos to project a desired representation of themselves to the outside world...or if they are savvy, to attempt to promote a favourable image to potential college recruiting coaches or future employers, fans and the like!

No Missy either - due to endorsement commitments, or possibly an indication she might be moving back to train w/Todd, or peraps she's just taking a break before her pro career begins in earnest??

Hopefully we'll get to see her participate at the Santa Clara meet on 18-21 June, though there's a potential schedule conflict as she will be hosting Tennessee Summer Swim Camp #5 on 21-25 June (both the 200 back & 100 free events @ SC are raced that Sunday the 21st)...

Caitlin Leverenz and Maya DiRado Produce Thrilling 200 IM Tie At Speedo Grand Challenge

The Speedo Grand Challenge features a unique championship final of only four swimmers, while the B final consists of swimmers ranked fifth through 12th in prelims. The format produced some thrilling swims tonight in Irvine, featuring a few athletes making preparations for the world championships from the Trojan Swim Club as well as those from Stanford University and the University of California.

Caitlin Leverenz and Maya DiRado had a very exciting race in the 200 IM, as the two tied with times of 2:11.57. Leverenz had a slight lead after butterfly, 28.70 to 28.98, but DiRado took over the lead by six tenths after the backstroke leg. Leverenz blazed through the breaststroke leg with a 37.98 to take a one-second lead going into freestyle. DiRado charged home and the two ended up sharing the victory in the event. The two have been just a shade faster, as Leverenz clocked a 2:11.40 at February's Arena Pro Swim Series in Orlando, while DiRado's 2:11.48 came at the BPH Super Series in Australia in January. Elizabeth Pelton finished third with a 2:13.46, while Cal teammate Celina Li took fourth with a 2:16.42.

200 IM Race:

200 IM Awards:

DiRado earned an outright win later in the sessions with a 4:13.06 in the 400 freestyle. She had a three-tenths lead over Trojan's Tristin Baxter at the halfway mark, but pulled away to win by two seconds. Baxter was second with a 4:15.21, while Melanie Klaren of Cal was third with a 4:19.66. Maryssa McArthur, who just wrapped up her junior year at Utah, was fourth with a 4:22.19. Celina Li put up a 4:18.83 to win the B final, with Sophia Saroukian just behind with a 4:19.31

400 Free Race:

Trojan Swim Club had a lot to celebrate in the men's 200 free. Not only did the team go 1-2-3 in the men's 200 free, led by a 1:47.91 from Nikita Lobintsev. It's just four tenths off the time he swam at the Russian nationals last month, where he placed third. Cristian Quintero, the reigning NCAA champion in the short course 200 free, was second with a 1:48.36. That breaks his own Venezuelan record of 1:48.44, which he swam last year at the LA Invite, and most importantly, gets him under the automatic qualification time for the world championships by one hundredth of a second. Jonathan Boffa, recently transitioning to the team after a stellar career at NC State, was third with a 1:49.63, just missing his lifetime best of 1:49.58 from last month.

Jessica Hardy had a battle on her hands with Sarah Haase in the 100 breast final. Hardy, the former world record holder who is prepping for the world championships, turned four tenths ahead of NCAA champion Haase at the 50 and held that advantage to the wall with a 1:08.55. Haase was second with a 1:08.91. Hardy was much faster last week at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Charlotte with a 1:06.91, but did what was needed to gain the victory in Irvine.

Hardy was back in the 50 free final, but couldn't get ahead of the Stanford 1-2 punch of Simone Manuel and Felicia Lee. Manuel got to the wall first with a 25.58, while Lee was second in 25.92. Hardy placed third with a 25.98. Eva Merrell of Aquazots, just 15 years old, will likely never forget making the four-woman championship final against a trio of established stars, finishing fourth with a lifetime best 26.03. Of note was Farida Osman's 25.50 to win the B final, which would have won the event had she been able to qualify for the final.

The top three in the men's 100 breast was close, with just two tenths of a second separating winner Glenn Snyders from third-place finisher Chuck Katis. Snyders, who will swim the event at worlds for New Zealand, won with a 1:02.11. Josh Prenot and Katis, both teammates at California, followed with times of 1:02.17 and 1:02.32, respectively. Jason Block of Trojan rounded out the four-man final with a 1:02.90. Notably, Steve West was attempting to qualify for his fifth trip to the U.S. Olympic Trials at 43 years old. After missing the Olympic Trials cut of 1:03.69 in prelims with a 1:03.82, he faltered in finals to place 11th overall with a 1:04.28.

In his first meet since breaking the 1:40 barrier in the 200-yard IM, David Nolan found himself in third place tonight in Irvine in the long course version with a 2:04.41. Stanford teammate Max Williamson got the win with a 2:02.35, while Omar Pinzon led through backstroke but fell to second with a 2:04.19.

Ryan Murphy continued his dominance in the 200 backstroke as he prepares for his first long course world championships, winning in Irvine with a 1:57.20. He's been just a bit faster this year, with a 1:56.91 to his credit from the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin. The California Golden Bears went 1-2-3 in the four-man final, as Jacob Pebley was second with a 1:59.40 and Connor Green was third with a 2:02.29. Thomas Smith of the Aquazots was fourth with a 2:02.95.

Kendyl Stewart, the reigning long course national champion in the 100 fly, won tonight with a 58.68, not that far off the winning time of 57.98 that she posted to win at nationals last summer. Kelly Naze and Felicia Lee also broke 1:00 in the championship final with times of 59.54 and 59.93, respectively. Eva Merrell made her second championship final of the meet, and the 15-year-old from Aquazots posted a 1:00.46 to get close to her lifetime best of 1:00.11 from last summer's nationals. Farida Osman also broke 1:00 tonight with a 59.31 to win the B final.

100 Fly Race:

The women's 200 free was a great race between Elizabeth Pelton and Simone Manuel as the two swam stroke-for-stroke through the entire race. Pelton never relinquished the lead, wining with a 1:5886 to Manuel's 1:59.11. Rachael Acker of Cal was third with a 2:01.85 while Roadrunner Aquatics' Stanzi Moseley was fourth with a 2:02.31. Lia Neal of Stanford won the B final with a 2:00.66.

Pelton got her first win of the meet with a 2:12.25 in the 200 back after posting a 2:11.59 in prelims. Pelton had to put in some work in the back half of the race to pass Hannah Weiss, who couldn't hold off Pelton and was second with a 2:13.55. Melanie Klaren was third with a 2:15.71 while Tara Halsted took fourth in 2:20.19. Ally Howe won the B final with a 2:15.58.

200 Back Race:

Also winning both IM events was Maya DiRado, who claimed the longer IM with a 4:40.61 after tying with Caitlin Leverenz in yesterday's 200 IM final. With Leverenz skipping the 400 IM in Irvine, DiRado won by nearly 11 seconds over Celina Li's 4:51.27. Eryn Weldon was third with a 4:55.65 and Tara Halsted took fourth with a 4:55.72.

Murphy was impressive in his 200 back yesterday, and kept that strong swimming going with a runaway win the 100 back on day 3. The rising college junior was 54.76, within a second of his season-best in the event.

His college teammate Bootsma, an Olympian like Neal, won the women's 100 back in a 1-2-3 sweep for Cal. Bootsma jumped into the world's top 20 for the season with a 1:00.39 that's the third-fastest time of any American this year. Elizabeth Pelton was just behind in 1:00.95 and Melanie Klaren rounded out the 1-2-3 in 1:02.11, beating Stanford's Felicia Lee.

Cal's Long Gutierrez nipped Stanford's Bobby Bollier in a hotly-contested 200 fly, 1:59.63 to 2:00.10.

Missy Franklin is the Academic All-American of the Year; Ryan Murphy and Rachael Acker are on the second team.

Courtesy: Cal Athletics
Release: Thursday 06/11/2015

http://www.calbears.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30100&ATCLID=210144602

BERKELEY Reigning NCAA Swimmers of the Year Missy Franklin and Ryan Murphy, as well as junior swimmer Rachael Acker, have been named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Men's and Women's at-large teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Franklin was chosen the women's Academic All-American of the Year for the at-large division, while Murphy and Acker were voted to the second team.

Franklin becomes the second Golden Bear to be chosen the at-large Academic All-American of the Year, joining 1992 recipient and gymnast Sigall Kassutto.

"I'm extremely honored to be selected as the Academic All-American of the Year for the women's at-large program," Franklin said. "As a student-athlete, I've found that the tools I use to succeed in the pool have also served me well in the classroom. I'm lucky to attend a university where strength in academics is celebrated throughout the student body, and I'm honored to receive this recognition alongside two other Cal Berkeley swimmers, Rachael Acker and Ryan Murphy, who were named second-team Academic All-Americans."

The at-large teams for the Capital One Academic All-America program include student-athletes from the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women, as well as bowling, crew and field hockey for women, and volleyball and wrestling for men.

The 2015 NCAA and Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and 2015 Honda Award recipient as the top female swimmer in the country, Franklin has a 3.58 GPA in psychology. The sophomore won three individual events at the NCAA meet the 200 free (in an American-record 1:39.10), 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley leading Cal to the national team title. Franklin was also a part of two NCAA champion relays and swam anchor on the 800 free relay that established an American record at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships.

Acker, a junior who earned all third-team Academic All-America honors last year, owns a 3.95 GPA as a French major and is on a pre-med track. She is a two-time first-team Pac-12 All-Academic choice, as well as swim coaches association Scholar All-American. This past year, she placed 15th in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2015 NCAA Championships and also earned All-American honors on the 400 free relay.

Acker is the fifth Golden Bear to become a two-time Academic All-American. Men's basketball's Neil Ernst in 1970 and '71 was the first, with the others being Sylvie Monnet (volleyball, 1982-83), Dave Butler (basketball, 1986-87) and Nathan Adrian (swimming, 2010-11).

Murphy also earned Pac-12 Men's Swimmer of the Year honors in addition to his NCAA recognition after helping the Bears to a national runner-up finish. The sophomore has a 3.78 GPA as an undeclared major. He is a two-time NCAA champion in the 100 and 200 back. Murphy set an NCAA record of 44.17 in the 100 back leading off the Bears' 400 medley relay and was timed in 1:37.77 in the 200 back, breaking Ryan Lochte's nearly eight-year-old American record in the event.

5 Storylines for the Arena Pro Swim Series at Santa Clara

1. Missy Franklin, in pursuit of 2016
Get ready, world. The Missy Franklin Show is coming, soon to a TV near you. We're roughly a year out from the 2016 Olympic Games, which means, soon, we'll be seeing more and more of Missy Franklin. That starts this weekend. Franklin, who turned professional a few months ago, will surely be one of the faces in the build-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics. She's upbeat, she's positive, she's articulate, and she's great in front of the cameras. This weekend, Franklin will compete in the virtual backyard of where she competed during her college swim days. Though her eyes are focused down the road towards championship meets later this summer, I expect Franklin to be her consistent, usual self, pushing the field to the brink in nearly every race in which she competes.

2. The continued progression of Tom Shields.
No doubt that Tom Shields has been one of the bright stars over the past few swimming seasons. Having a breakout year last summer, Shields looks to continue the momentum this summer. Team USA will need a top-of-the-game butterflyer for its medley relay at international competitions, and Shields will compete in the coming swim seasons against a crowded field, one that will likely include Michael Phelps. This weekend, however, look for Shields to make another statement -- one of consistency and momentum, one that shows he could be an X-Factor come 2016.

3. Simone Manuel, a bright rising star.
Another bright up-and-coming swimmer? Simone Manuel. If you want to see one of the great personalities for Team USA, don't miss Manuel this weekend. She's seeded 1st in the 50m freestyle, and it'll be fun to see how the 18-year-old does against a significantly older sprint field.

4. Women's 100m backstroke.
What a field this will be Missy Franklin, Natalie Coughlin, Rachel Bootsma, Elizabeth Pelton, and a variety of international swimmers. I hope this is a preview of championship backstroke finals to come. These swimmers have all trained in the same pool before, and they are familiar with each other's racing strategies and strengths. Expect each one to come out hungry. I've long said that I'd pay money to watch a Cal backstroke practice, and we're about to see one, with an added sprinkle of some of the best international backstrokers out there.

5. The last leg of the 2014-2015 Arena Pro Swim Series.

Swim Coaches Association Adds to List of Academic Awards for Golden Bears
By Cal Athletics on Tue, June 30, 2015

BERKELEY – The academic achievements for the Cal women’s swimming & diving team keep rolling in. On Wednesday, the Golden Bears were designated a Scholar All-America team for posting a combined 3.29 GPA and 10 members of the squad earned individual Scholar All-America honors.

The awards are determined by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Teams must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for the spring semester, while individuals must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher and participated in the NCAA Championships. Honorable mention selections had a GPA of 3.50 and achieved an NCAA “B” time standard or competed at the NCAA diving qualifying meet.

Earning Scholar All-America honors for the Bears were: Camille Cheng, Eleanor Smart, Kelly Naze, Kristen Vredeveld, Melanie Klaren, Missy Franklin, Noemie Thomas and Rachael Acker. Anne Kastler and Maija Roses were honorable mention selections.

In addition, Cal placed 16 swimmers and divers on the 2014-15 Pac-12 All-Academic team. Franklin, the NCAA Swimmer of the Year who received the Honda Cup as the top female collegiate athlete in the country Monday night, was tabbed the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year (at-large division), and Acker claimed second-team Academic All-America recognition.

In the pool, the Bears captured the Pac-12 championship and won their fourth NCAA title in the past seven years.

The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has selected a record 810 swimmers and divers to its Scholar All-America team, highlighted by CSCAA Swimmers-of-the-Year Missy Franklin and Ryan Murphy from California, Sarah Thompson (Williams) and Andrew Wilson (Emory).

A complete list from all 284 teams can be found here.

“It’s an honor to be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America team,” Missy Franklin said. “I’m lucky to be at a University that celebrates success in the pool and also in the classroom as UC Berkeley is extremely supportive of promoting a positive scholar-athlete atmosphere on campus.”
