Pelton's 200 back time (1:54.23) is an extremely fast early season time. Would have been a scorer at 2014 NCAAs, so despite it not being an A cut, for sure she's "invited" to NCAAs based on that swim alone. Know she already has some other B cuts, so all she has to worry about the rest of the season is improving her prelim seeds and determining her best program for the Bears. Would guess she'll be eligible to swim 200 back, 100 back, 200 free, 100 free, 200 IM, 400 IM, and maybe 50 free.

Ummm, sorry but I just have to take exception to the tone & implications of The Daily Californian's heading above.

Not to mention "In only their second event of the 2014-2015 season, the Bears lost to Florida, a team that finished three spots behind them at the NCAA Championships last year." - yes it being early in the season was accounted for in the article, but then a somewhat questionable assumption was made that the scoring & qualifications format here were similar to NCAAs...

Also, "Cal was not as close as they would have liked, pulling in 861 points, almost 100 below Florida." - yet no mention of the 182 additional points that UF amassed from the diving. The Swimswam article is more measured and insightful imo, regardless of which team you happen to be rooting for...

College Previews: #3 Cal Looking To Challenge For Number One Spot With A Talent Filled Roster

http://swimswam.com/cal-women/

Mitch Bowmile | October 17th, 2014

The Cal women have some of the top names in college swimming that makes up a fantastic roster and undoubtedly categorizes them as one of the best teams in the nation.

With a great number of swimmers on the team bringing home points at last year's NCAA Championships, the Cal team is in a great position his season, as they haven't lost much, but they've gained a whole lot.

Cindy Tran will be the biggest factor missing from the Cal team this season as she had an electrifying career that involved multiple finals swims at the NCAA Championships as well as being a crucial part of the Cal relays.

They've gained some great athletes with the likes of Cierra Runge and Noemie Thomas, so there's merit to believe that Cal could come back swinging and try to top Stanford and Georgia for the women's NCAA title.

Last Season

The Cal women were extremely successful last season with Teri McKeever utilizing a large majority of the athletes on her team to score points at both the Pac 12 Championships and NCAAs.

With a fantastic record last season, the Cal Golden Bears came into the 2014 Pac 12 Championships as the undisputed favorites, with the exception of Stanford.

The Cal team won the Pac 12 meet with a total of 1552.5 points to take down Stanford who finished second with 1364.

Later in the season at the NCAAs, Cal wasn't able to hold off Stanford and ended up finishing third behind them and the eventual winners, Georgia. Cal had 386 points which was extremely close to Stanford's 402.5.

Cal fell to Stanford much due to a disqualified 4x50m medley relay, with that race their point totals would have been much closer.

Overall, the Cal team saw success from swimmers like Missy Franklin, Elizabeth Pelton and Celina Li who all scored in multiple events in order to help Cal get the finish they needed.

Heading into this season, they might be in an even better position to demonstrate their dominant roster to the rest of the NCAA.

2014-2015 Freshman Class

The Golden Bears don't have a huge freshman class for the 2014-2015 season, drafting only five swimmers. Quality over quantity is the definition of how Cal recruited however, picking up big names such as freestyle star Cierra Runge and Canadian butterfly star Noemie Thomas.

Noemie Thomas fits perfectly in the Cal roster with Cindy Tran -who previously swam the fly splits on all the relays and placed sixth in the 100 fly at NCAA's last year- gone. Coming from Canada, the one weakness that Thomas has is that she doesn't have as much experience as her American counterparts swimming yards.

In Canada, short course meets are held in 25m pools, where Thomas has absolutely excelled. Her short course 100m fly sits at 56.64; when converted that time is a 51.02 in yards. A 51.02 would have placed second at the NCAA Championships last year behind Felicia Lee of Stanford who will not be coming back this year meaning that Thomas could possibly have a shot at the title.

Her long course 50m fly is a 26.23 which ranked her at 16th in the world for the 2013-2014 season. Converted to short course yards, that's a 23.00. The fastest split in the 200 medley relay at NCAA's last season was a 22.71 by Ellese Zalewski. Thomas is set up to possibly have the fastest split. If she can convert her long course success to yards well a 23.00 with a flat-start will render an amazing fly leg on the 200 medley relay.

The Cal 200 medley relay was disqualified last year, however they have one of the most stacked teams in the NCAA. With Thomas now on the team, they'll have amazing back, fly, and freestyle legs. Their one weakness would be the breaststroke leg with Celina Li, however Li is coming back after finishing her freshman season with a lot more experience than ever before which should help her cause.

Thomas will be very successful in the 100 fly, as well as the relays, and will come as a dual threat with potential to score in the 200 fly. Her 200 fly conversion time is a 1:55.41 which would have gotten her seventh at last year's NCAA's. She spoke to SwimSwam about putting some more focus on her 200 fly before moving to California, however the sprints are her specialties.

While Thomas takes control of the sprint fly events, Cierra Runge will step in to make her move in the middle-distance and distance freestyles. Runge is coming off an amazing season where she made her first senior national team, heading to Pan Pacs. Runge swam a 4:04.67 in the 400m free at nationals to finish second behind Katie Ledecky and earn herself a spot on the roster.

Runge also made the team in the 800m freestyle, and ended up earning a silver medal at Pan Pacs, again behind Ledecky, to earn her first major international medal on a senior level. Runge also got to work with Cal coach Teri McKeever while she was there.

Runge holds extremely fast times in meters, however she hasn't produced anything as impressive in yards, but there's no doubt that McKeever has a plan for her. So far, she set two personal best in yards swims this season with a 4:43.36 in the 500 free and a 16:40.89 in the 1650 free at the All-Florida Invite. Those times wouldn't have scored points at last year's NCAA Championships, however come NCAAs she'll most likely be able to throw something down that will be competitive.

No Cal swimmer scored in the 1650 at last year's NCAAs as the distance-freestyle portion of the program was lacking in athletes. With Runge, it only adds more depth to the team and gives Cal more potential to score in every single individual event.

Possibly shadowed by the two stars is freshman Maija Roses. Roses is a breaststroker, and might give Celina Li a run for her money on the breaststroke legs of the relays. Her personal best in the 100 yard breaststroke is 1:01.48. Li split a 1:01.20 on the 4100 medley relay last season, so Roses is definitely in contention for taking over as the top breaststroker and grabbing that relay spot.

Last season, Cal was unable to score in only four individual events, two of which happened to be the breaststrokes. Roses could be the solution to that problem if she can drop some time this season. She'll need to be around the one-minute mark in the 100, and under around 2:09 in the 200 if she wants a chance at making the consolation final. Those times are very achievable, and if she's able to make those time drops it will only make the Cal relays that much more successful.

One of the Cal relays that was very successful last season was the 4100 freestyle relay. The team finished third at NCAAs, the slowest split being a 48.72 leadoff from Kaylin Bing. This season, Cal recruited Jasmine Mau who swims a 48.67 100 freestyle.

Bing still has the edge on Mau. In the individual 100 freestyle she was a 48.56 in prelims last season. The potential for Mau to get a relay spot however will be fuel for her to improve, and will create a great freestyle training environment.

Returning Swimmers

<this paragraph has been edited out due to board limits on posting size - check out the link above for the full text of this article>

What To Expect

The depth of the Cal team is almost unmatched by any other in the NCAA. Out of all the returning swimmers, they scored in every single individual event other than the two breaststrokes, the 200 fly, and the 1650 at last year's NCAAs. Now with freshman swimmers who have the potential to score in those events the roster seems almost unstoppable.

By having one or more athletes scoring in every event, as well as improved relays, it seems as though Cal will pass Stanford and come a lot closer to Georgia, who's won for the last two seasons after coming second to Cal back in 2012. Cal is clearly looking to regain that title, and it's looking as though they have the swimmers and potential to do so.

Cal should repeat as the Pac 12 champions and their relays are looking to be in great shape. With the addition of Noemie Thomas and Maija Roses, the potential to swim faster medley relays is greater than ever. The 400 freestyle relay should remain in a similar position, although the 200 free relay might fall slightly without Cindy Tran. They should be able to pick up sturdy points in all their relays which will be a huge plus for them as they lost points drastically last year on the DQ'ed 200 medley relay.

With the great depth on the Cal team which includes seven athletes who've competed in international swimming competition, two of which are freshman, they've assembled one of the greatest teams in college swimming and will be a driving force in the NCAA for years to come.

Quick comment upon browsing thru the above article. Much as I approve of the author's optimistic view of the Bears' strengths & depth, there are a number of glaring inaccuracies facts-wise (i.e. Sophia mentioned as a returning member of the team) and also analysis-wise (imo), with scant mention of some important contributing swimmers (even if just potentially). Also no reference to the very strong freshman class from the farm who will make their mark in NCAAs and be a dangerous threat (if they can perform to their form on paper - hopefully not lol)... I'd venture that this year, furds & dawgs will be the co-favorites, but we still have a decent chance if our team can rediscover their confidence, and believe in their ability to win it all...

Not a great review at all in my opinion. How can you not mention Marina Garicia, who I believe is one of the three keys to success this coming season. If she can reach her potential and give us improved medley relay times, both 200 and 400, and can make the consolation finals of the 100 and 200 breast, I think that would go a long way to help us in the NCAA championship. The second key is the return to freshman normal for Rachel and Liz. Can't believe they only gave Boots a tiny paragraph. If she returns to freshman form, Rachel could add another 35-50 points to Cal's total. Let's remember that she reached three A finals in her freshman year! The last key is the depth of our role players. If Georgia proved anything last year, it is that you can still do well without your graduating superstars, Romano and Schimitt, if everyone on the team contributes points. Georgia was very deep. We need Breed, Naze, Acker, Kong, Mau, and Roses to really step up and score points. All of these are realistic possibilities!

Blame Canada! Author is Canadian and he's pumped up Noemie too much and not played up Cierra enough. Also disagree that Lia Neal is Missy's biggest threat in the 100 free. She's not, but Simone Manuel is. If I had to assign probabilities to Cal's finish, I'd say 20% 1st, 35% 2nd, 40% 3rd, and 5% 4th. There are only two data points at this point (Cal Poly and Florida). Florida has some fluky scoring (only 2 A finalists per event which won't apply at NCAAs), but the Bears still have some problems that Teri didn't address: no diving points, didn't add another 50/100 scoring sprinter (what Vredeveld was supposed to be), and no reliable breaststroker. Cierra will score in the mile, 500, and 200 and Noemie and Mau add a lot, but may not be enough to win it all. Teri didn't add any transfers this Summer, so either there were no takers, she's standing pat on what she has, or she wants to build for 2016 and beyond. Durden's team wouldn't have won last year without transfer Katis, so I kinda think Teri thinks she's got better chances down the line than going for it all in 2015.

At this point last year, nobody would have predicted that Vredeveld, Marina, and Batchelor combined would score a single point at NCAAs. OTOH, other than Manuel, LSJU's super frosh were underwhelming this Summer. Could be they're only SCY swimmers, but when the pressure was on, none of them stepped up and made the Pan Pac team. DiRado and Lee are huge loses and Howe and Hu won't replace their production on relays and in individual events right away. LSJU won 4 relays and finished third in one, so they left only 8 points on the table. That's not going to happen again. Bears won't DQ and are stronger in both medleys and the 800 free. Do think that LSJU has the edge at Pac-12s because of their freestyle advantage and scoring out to 24 places, but think NCAAs are a coin flip between the two. Georgia lost their diver and Jack Bauerle was able to coach them at home all last season. They didn't lose much and if he's back, they should be strong favorites. If not, it's a three way race. Like LSJU, Georgia's swimmers underwhelmed last Summer. They missed their coach and recruits are avoiding Athens like it's Ebola-plagued West Africa. A&M and 'SC aren't going to catch the top 3, barring a major disaster. It's not like Teri has a bad hand, but she still has some holes. I'd predict 16 NCAA qualifiers. If Maija and Kong end up on the NCAA roster, it's because Teri projects them as scorers, but she's doesn't need 4 breaststrokers at NCAAs unless they all project as individual scorers. If that happens, Bears would be in great shape.

As usual, a spot on comment from BearDevil. Even ex-Card Priestly had a better grip on the Cal roster when he was the main team reviewer.

I agree that Teri's squad is not the favorite for the NCAAs this year; our lack of a lock-down 50 free sprinter and a sprint breaststroker really hamper three of our relays. Maybe Maija steps up, Garcia figures out yards, or Kong surprises to address our 2014-2015 breast issue, but at this point it looks as if Baker slots immediately into that slot on relays
when she arrives in Berkeley in 2015. As noted by BearDevil, very limited data points so far this season, but it already appears that Pelton is pumped for a strong season, and Noemie and Cierra will be impact newbies. But I do not see year-over-year improvements in breast or free sprint so we will have troubles vs Georgia and the Cards at NCAAs.

A different story for Durden's crew, where recent recruiting has addressed needs and the roster is stacked in all disciplines, save diving even with the addition of Finn. Our biggest losses from last year's champion team were Marcin (Fly/IM), Cox (fly/back) and Bagshaw (distance). Justin Lynch looks to be making the transition to yards (and school, according to his mother) and will immediately in the mix for fly relay duty and for NCAA points in both fly individual events. Connor Hoppe is the other frosh at this early point in the season who looks ready to compete at Pac 12's and will be in the mix for sprint breast relay duty once Katis moves on. With the caveat of limited data points (SLO. Pacific and Hawaii filling in for last year's visit from Indiana) the Bears are swimming faster across the board except for distance free where Bagshaw early results reflected his eventual status as one of best distance guys in college swimming.

Janardin Burn's had fine summer results and Ryan Kao s showing nice early progress, but Bagshaw's individual points at NCAAs will likely be missed, but guys like Prenot, Pebley, Stubblefield and Murphy are on the path for big years and we should be favorites at NCAAs. Texas lost their big scoring diver to Indiana via transfer, but are still stacked in diving, and virtually lost none of their swimming points from NCAAs while adding several impact frosh including Schooling, Roberts and Ringgold.

First College Swimming Coaches Poll of Season Puts Southern Cal Women In Top Spot
22 October 2014, 08:00pm

http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/southern-california-takes-top-spot-swimming-coaches-poll/

------

PHOENIX The first rankings poll of the 2014-2015 season from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America nearly put the University of Southern California unanimously at the top of the list of the top 25 Division I swimming and diving teams. The Trojans missed out on a perfect vote by one point.

1. Southern California (2-0, 2-0 Pac 12)
The Trojans were busy in October, taking down conference foe Washington State then splitting up for the SMU Classic and the Oregon State dual. Despite a fourth-place finish in Dallas, USC gets the top spot to kick off the dual meet season thanks to the efforts of national champion Kendyl Stewart and stalwarts Chelsea Chenault and Jasmine Tosky.

2. Georgia (4-0, 2-0 SEC)
The Lady Bulldogs find themselves in familiar territory at this point in the season. In the first poll of the 2013-2014 season, Georgia was ranked second after four dual meet wins in decisive fashion. Athletes such as Amber McDermott, Brittany MacLean and Kendyl Stewart have helped showcase Georgia's overall strengths.

3. Florida (3-0, 3-0 SEC)
Losing Elizabeth Beisel to graduation doesn't seem to have affected the Gators in the early goings of this season. Led by Natalie Hinds, Florida is showing impressive speed in October.

4. California (0-0, 0-0 Pac 12)
California's team, led by a recovering Missy Franklin, visited Florida and showed their dominance in the backstroke events, as well as a strong IM squad with Celina Li and others doing well.

5. North Carolina (1-1, 0-0 ACC)

6. Minnesota (2-0, 1-0 Big Ten)

7. Texas A&M (1-0, 1-0 SEC)

8. Auburn (3-0, 1-0 SEC)

9. Louisville (2-0, 0-0 ACC)

10. Arizona (2-0, 1-0 Pac 12)
Bonnie Brandon, the Wildcats' utility player, was a big part of the win against Wisconsin, with Emma Schoettmer and Tjasa Oder also contributing well.

11. Southern Methodist (0-0, 0-0 American)

12. Tennessee (2-1, 0-1 SEC)

13. Stanford (1-0, 1-0 Pac 12)
The Cardinal are starting the season slowly, picking off Utah in a dual meet with many of the key players not showing much at this phase of the season.

14. Penn State (5-0, 0-0 Big Ten)

15. Louisiana State (1-1, 0-1 SEC)

16. Wisconsin (1-2, 0-1 Big Ten)

17. Michigan (2-0, 2-0 Big Ten)

18. UCLA (1-0, 1-0 Pac 12)
Winning 11 of 14 events, UCLA continued to show off the dual-meet depth they are known to bring to every competition against Washington state. Katy Campbell, the USA Swimming national champion in the 1500, swam off events in her first meet of the season but will be a big point scorer in distance freestyle when needed.

19. N.C. State (0-1, 0-0 ACC)

20. Indiana (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten)

Individual wins from 10 different Bears lift Cal past OSU

http://www.calbears.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30100&ATCLID=209733713

In a 156-97 dual-meet victory over Oregon State, the California women's swim team showcased its deep roster as 10 different Golden Bears claimed individual titles on Friday afternoon.

"I am really proud of the girls," said associate head coach Kristen Cunnane. "Having 10 different event winners shows a lot of versatility and the good, healthy competitiveness of the team."

Four freshmen made their Spieker Aquatics debut and three claimed individual event victories.

"It was amazing," said first-year swimmer Jasmine Mau. "I was really excited and really pumped to be at home with my teammates and swim my first dual meet."

Cal got off the blocks quickly as two Golden Bear quartets notched the top two spots in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. The team of Mau, Marina Garcia, Farida Osman and Camille Cheng came in first with a mark of 1:41.92. The foursome of Elizabeth Pelton, Maija Roses, Kelly Naze and Kaylin Bing claimed second in 1:43.39.

Oregon State junior Sammy Harrison tallied the only two OSU individual titles starting with a win in the 1000 freestyle (9:50.25). Cal freshman Cierra Runge also finished under the 10-minute mark in the event with a second-place finish in 9:53.91. Harrison later claimed the win in the 500 free with a 4:51.25 time.

Led by sophomore Missy Franklin, the Bears collected 16 team points after claiming the top three spots in the 200 free. Franklin clocked in at 1:48.24 to take first, while Caroline Piehl (1:50.12) and Rachael Acker (1:51.69) finished second and third, respectively.

Mau produced a victory in the 100 backstroke (55.67), edging Franklin who took second in 55.78 just moments after her 200 free swim.

Cal continued its steak of victories in the 100 breaststroke (Garcia, 1:03. 05), 200 fly (Rachel Bootsma, 2:01.14), 200 backstroke (Melanie Klaren, 1:58.54) and 50 free (Kaylin Bing, 23.21).

Osman held off a colony of Beavers to win the 100 free with a dominating mark of 51.23. Freshman Maija Roses came up with an impressive win in the 200 breast, touching at 2:20.39.

Noemie Thomas and Celina Li capped off the individual events with wins. Thomas, a freshman who came out on top n the 100 fly, clocked in at 54.09, while Li dominated the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.67.

Cal finished the afternoon strong as the quartet of Piehl, Mau, Runge and anchor Bing touched first at 1:34.78 in the 200 free relay.

The Golden Bears return to the water when they face off against Texas at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Friday, Oct. 31.

Yes, I went there for the meet. Sorry I'm just a novice so really can't comment about who swam well but not much you can gleam from the meet, since we're Still early in the season with their training and most of the swimmers weren't swimming their normal events. However, was impressed with the Freshmen though, especially couple of them (thomas, Maija, Mau or maybe all of them) all who seem to have very good underwater skills. Next week the individual performances should be better when UT come to town.

Hey, appreciate the feedback there, OBear073akaSMFan! Very impressed btw with your multi-tasking support of all these multi-disciplinary varsities. Me, I just stick to what little I do know, the swimming lol

Sounds like the freshies are bonding well with the team and with each other, showing considerable scoring potential right off the bat. Once again Teri & Kristen seem to have put together a very compatible group of exceptional student-athletes...can't wait to see them flourish and show off their studly chops in the coming weeks, months & years!

Next season will be off the roof with the much anticipated arrival of Katie, Kathleen & Amy (and hopefully Abbey if tedbear's dream team becomes a reality after this weekend :p)...the meets vs. furds will be really intense with so much swimming talent amassed between them and us for the next half decade or longer!

If you make it to the UT dual next week, be sure to ask Maija to pose for a photo next to Cierra and post it up here haha

BTW if you saw Yvette Kong you would never suspect her as being a swimmer. Don't know if she has loss weight or not but she looks too slender for a swimmer!

Two of the marquee teams in the history of collegiate women's swimming & diving face off at Spieker Aquatics Complex when California hosts Texas in a dual meet starting at 1 p.m. Friday.

Together, the programs have combined for 10 team national championships and over 130 individual or relay national titles. At last year's NCAA meet, Cal finished third - the sixth year in a row the Bears have placed among the top three - while Texas took home ninth place. Cal's won its NCAA crowns in 2009, 2011 and 2012, with Texas claiming championships from 1980-81, 1984-88 and 1990-91.

Overall, UT leads the series with the Bears, 8-3, but Cal claimed the last match-up, 172-128, two years ago in Berkeley.

Friday's meet marks the second of three consecutive home events for Cal. The Bears defeated Oregon State, 156-97, last Thursday and host Wisconsin in a dual with the men's team on Friday, Nov. 7.

GOLDEN BEAR IN THE HOUSE

Long-time Golden Bear fans may recognize third-year Texas head coach Carol Capitani. As a collegian, Capitani (nee Felton) suited up for Cal from 1988-91 and helped the Bears to four consecutive top-5 finishes at the NCAA Championships. Today marks her second return trip to Berkeley leading the Longhorns after bringing her squad to California in the fall of 2012.

Cal and Texas met under rainy conditions at Spieker Aquatics Complex Friday.

BERKELEY California built an early lead against Texas, but the Longhorns came through with a strong finish, winning five of the final six events, to edge the Golden Bears, 161-139, Friday at Spieker Aquatics Complex

The meet came down to the final event, with Cal needing to take the first two spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay to clinch a tie. But Texas, which upended Stanford Thursday, claimed first and third place in the race to hold off the Bears.

"There was a lot of tough racing and unfortunately a few tight finishes went the wrong way for us," Cal associate head coach Kristen Cunnane said. "I'm proud of how the girls showed up. I think that everybody gave their best, and that's all you can do. We're working real hard now and are staying true to that."

Junior Elizabeth Pelton did what she could to help Cal's cause, winning the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 200 individual medley and swimming the anchor leg on the victorious 400 medley relay that opened the afternoon. Her times of 53.79 in the 100 back and 1:58.69 in the 200 IM were both season bests, as was the relay's time of 3:40.96.

"I knew going into it that it was going to be raining and probably not ideal conditions," Pelton said. "At Pan Pacs (in Australia) this summer, there was a torrential downpour, so I knew that wasn't going to be a problem. I wanted to take pride in putting in a good effort."

The Bears jumped out to an early advantage after the victory in the medley relay, Missy Franklin's triumph in the 200 freestyle (1:47.37) and Pelton's in the 100 back. Franklin (100 free, 50.13) and Pelton (200 back) won consecutive events for the second time to keep the Bears in front through 10 events before Texas mounted its comeback.

Several races came down to the final few yards, including the 100 butterfly, where Texas' Brynne Wong out-touched Cal's Noemi Thomas, 54.08 to 54.09. Wong also nipped Farida Osman at the finish of the 50 free, winning 23.19 to 23.32.

Cal will be back in action next Friday, Nov. 7 when the Bears host Wisconsin in a dual meet featuring the men's and women's teams. The matchup will get underway at 1 p.m. and admission is free.

As the rain fell onto the surface of the pool at the Spieker Aquatics Center, each drop made its own round imprint onto the water. With the crowd standing under the awning high above the pool, the Cal women's swim team came into the meet confident. Coming into the second half of the meet, Cal had been leading. But in the last six events, the Longhorns won five of them and were able to turn things around. Texas kept the lead for the rest of the day, winning 161-139.

"There was a lot of tough racing, and a few tight finishes went the wrong way for us," said associate head coach Kristen Cunnane. "But I'm proud of how the girls showed up, and I think everybody gave their best, and that's all you can do."

...

"I think the spirits are a little shaken right now," Pelton said. "We knew they were going to be really fast but they kind of surprised us with how well they swam. I think it's about recovering today and getting a lot of good rest this weekend and gearing up for next weekend. Hopefully, we will have a good crowd with the boys. Got to get ready for the next one."

Both breast events made up most of the point difference between the two teams. Bears won the medley relay, but breaststroke is a limiting factor for this team. Baker will help out on the breast legs on both medley relays next year, but asking her to swim breast as her individual events especially in an olympic year isn't in her best interest. Her best chance to make the 2016 team is as a backtroker, IMer, or a 800 free relay swimmer.

Bears are about what was expected to this point. Cierra's having some issues, but she'll get it together. Texas is a little better than expected and LSJU isn't as good as advertised. UT will be a recruiting and NCAA threat sooner rather than later. Manuel's a beast for LSJU, but Neal's plateaued, and the freshmen other than Manuel had crappy Summers and haven't shown much yet. Meehan misses DiRado and Lee big time. They'll dominate the 200 and 400 free relays, but will be hard pressed to match last year's results in the medley relays. They're also shaky in distance.

Congrats to Carol Capitani; she really had her swimmers ready to race. Sweeping Cal and Stanford on the road, albeit early season, is no mean feat. I realize that Teri is preparing the team for March 2015, and Oct results don't mean much in the big picture, but Cal is really hurting in breaststroke which will hurt us at NCAAs. We also lack an elite free sprinter to add to our relays. We are stacked in Back and Fly with the recent recruit classes but our top priority in the next recruiting round should be a great breaststroker.

At this point in the season with both Stanford and Cal stumbling, the Georgia women who have been ripping through their competition look like the best women's team in the country. They have depth in all stokes and decent divers as well.
BearDevil

Teri's team was flat at NCAAs last season, so it looks like she tweaked some things to maximize performance. She wants to use the Georgia Invitational in early December to get a big chunk of the team qualified for NCAAs. The timing (mid-November) of the Utah meet at altitude in SLC is no accident. There isn't a Cal/Utah football game that weekend, so Teri wants to test her team at altitude at the end of a hard six week stretch of training. Would not be surprised if the team doesn't swim very well and they may very well lose, but Teri has bigger fish to fry and doesn't give a rat's ass how much sniping her team takes from naysayers. Georgia will be a really good test and she'll probably get all of her relays qualified for NCAAs then. Just needs one A relay cut to get all five relays qualified. Georgia's really tough in middle distance, but Teri will go for an A cut in the 800 relay in Athens.

There are minimal complaints about Teri's recruiting. On paper, Kong and Marina were can't miss breaststrokers as recruits, but it hasn't happened yet. Same thing with Vredeveld in the sprints. The lack of breaststroke development probably had an effect on locals Heidi Poppe (LSJU) and Riley Scott ('SC). There was mutual interest early, but neither worked out. Teri also recruited UVa legacy, Leah Smith, but she was never coming West. Cierra's development is key, she's already made Pan Pacs before college and Teri's last distance star was Lauren Boyle. There are a fair amount of recruitable distance prospects (Becca Mann, Sierra Schmidt, Madison Homovich) in the pipeline, but Cierra needs to remain on an upward trajectory for some of those to become Bears.

BearDevil, who are our future breaststroke recruit hopefuls? I was looking at a Junior Pan Pacs list and it looks like all the top times were current freshmen, like Emily Kopas (Michigan) or Joire Caneta (ASU). Caneta is from Bakersfield, how did we not know about her? What about internationals? Kanako Watanabe? Hahaha!
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
For some bizarre reason, I've been having problems linking anything to BI lately. Did look through the USA swimming website and they have rankings for 16 year old breaststrokers, but they're only based on times since September 1. Also looked at the 2014 Junior National team. I'd go through those two lists and look at Californians/Westerners/club ties to current/former Bears. No names from the Bay Area/Nor Cal and in general 2016 class looks pretty weak in breast. To be fair, the rankings are only based on two months of times, and junior swimmers generally swim their best times in the Spring (high school season)/Summers (LC season).

Don't think that Cal (or anyone) didn't know about Caneta. Her best 100 breast time is still a half second slower than Maija's. She didn't turn down all the other Pac-12 swim powers to go to ASU. May be a late bloomer or a much better LCM swimmer than SCY. Same club team as Stanzi Mosely, who everybody is/will be recruiting.

Welcome to the Cal women's swimming & diving blog for the 2014-15 season. I'm Eva Greene, and this year Maija Roses and I will be recapping the year and telling stories of what it's like to be a Golden Bear. This is my senior season, so I am ready and excited to make memories and enjoy each and every moment!

Cal at Queen of the Pool

It's already November, which means life in Berkeley is in full swing. The first round of midterms has ended, dual meets have started, and training continues to push us every day. We've met and fallen into Golden love with our five freshmen, bonded at our team retreat, trained alongside whales and seals in the ocean, traveled to Florida to race some Gators, and battled Oregon State and Texas in home duals. We've been working hard and have managed to have a whole lot of fun along the way.

With each new year comes a new team, ready for the fresh experiences that are to come. Although our seasons have similarities from year to year, they are all far from the same. One of my favorite parts of the fall is getting to know the freshmen and seeing their personalities begin to shine. Their added dynamic is what makes this year's team so unique. We've all returned with renewed passion, and our new relationships are the fuel that will carry us through this year. The women I get to call my teammates are truly inspiring, and the feeling that together we can do anything is what drives me to be my absolute best every day.

Bears having fun in the sun

Right now our training consists of swimming, dancing, strength training and Pilates. Workouts keep us moving in many different ways, which is making me feel even stronger and more athletic. Our schedule definitely keeps us working hard! One of the big challenges of the fall is competing when fatigue always seems to sneak its way into our lives. Over the past two weeks we have competed against Oregon State and Texas, which presented us with some exciting racing opportunities. A huge mental challenge at these meets was competing when we might not have felt our absolute best. Before both competitions, coach Teri reminded us that being successful at this time of the year is going to look much different than it will at other points in the season. Given this, that passion and inspiration of the team environment became incredibly important. We raced with spirit and enjoyed the special indescribable feeling that comes with wearing a Cal cap.

Coming up this week, we swim Wisconsin in a coed dual meet Friday and then have a quick trip to Utah the following week. With the semester more than half way over, it's time to buckle down and keep up the motivation. There's never a dull moment in Berkeley! GO BEARS!

Eva

Eva Greene is a senior from Falls Church, Va., while Maija Roses is a freshman from Durham, N.C. Eva and Maija will alternate producing blog entries each week during the season, with Eva writing her piece and Maija creating a video.

Cal concludes a three-meet homestand when the Golden Bears host Wisconsin in a dual Friday that will feature swimmers and divers from the men’s and women’s teams.

This marks the third consecutive year Cal and Wisconsin have met at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears won last year, 163-111, and claimed the 2012 match-up, 170-110.

The Badgers are led by head coach Whitney Hite, now in his fourth season at the helm. He served as an assistant for Cal coach Teri McKeever from 2004-06.

To date, the Bears have recorded 18 swims in nine events that meet the NCAA B qualifying standard. Missy Franklin (50, 100, 200 free), Elizabeth Pelton (100 and 200 back; 200 IM) and Cierra Runge (500, 1000, 1650 free) all lead the team with best overall times in three events each. Marina Garcia (100 and 200 breast) and Celina Li (200 fly, 400 IM) top the squad in two different events.

The Collegiate Swimming Coaches' Association of America (CSCAA) has released their second top-25 ranking for women of the 2014-2015 season, and the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs are on top. This poll, which is focused on dual meet performance, actually resembles pretty closely last year's NCAA results at the top. The one big exception to that is the Texas women, who were 9th at NCAA's last year but rank as #2 in this week's poll. When dual meet performance is considered, that's the position where they belong after a tough weekend swing through northern California that saw them beat both #3 Stanford and #4 Cal in back-to-back meets.

The Georgia women, however, remain on top after a convincing 176-119 win over the Florida Gators.

http://swimswam.com/college-swimming-previews-1-georgia-women-chasing-title-threepeat/

...

2014-2015 Outlook

Georgia looks like a program in good shape at the moment. The Bulldogs now have a culture of success that has lasted past the graduation of stars like Megan Romano and Allison Schmitt, and even past the loss of the ship's captain, Jack Bauerle. It's safe to say there's a good chance that culture still exists this year, even in the absence of names like Shannon Vreeland, Melanie Margalis and Laura Ryan.

Still, those three are big losses. Without them and without Bauerle, it now falls squarely on the shoulders of the juniors and seniors to help carry that culture on with the team's bright young talents.

They'll need it. The coming NCAA Championships are shaping up to once again be a solid three-team battle, and the early projections are probably closer than you might expect.

As we did with the men's preview for the defending champs, let's take a look at returning points from last year's NCAA Championships. I tallied up total points for the top three teams from a year ago, then subtracted all seniors and outgoing transfers. Included in those subtracted points are relay legs 25% of the relay's total points for each departed leg. Here's what we come up with:
Georgia: 325.5 returning points out of 528 (lost 202.5, or 38.3%)
Stanford: 225.5 returning points out of 402.5 (lost 177, or 43.9%)
California: 318.5 returning points out of 386 (lost 66.5, or 17.2%)

The buzz early in the season has been all Stanford, thanks to a whale of a recruiting class. But the Cardinal also lost the highest percentage of its points from 2014, and after winning 4 of the 5 relays, has nowhere to go but down in the points for those events.

The big question between Stanford and Georgia: does Stanford's killer freshman crew account for the 100-point deficit in returning points plus whatever Georgia gets from its freshman class?

At this point, I'm saying yes. Simone Manuel alone probably accounts for somewhere around 90 points (including her 25% of each relay she swims on), and the rest of the class has the ability to make up the rest of the gap. Still, that's putting a lot of Cardinal eggs in a freshman basket, knowing that highly-touted prospects don't always transfer their skills to the college level the way we'd expect. Some take years to adjust to the massive life changes college brings about. Some never really do make the transition.

Cal is the wild-card. They hardly lost anything in terms of points, and had what's widely regarded as a down year across the board last season. Just 6 points behind Georgia in returning scores, Cal could make serious moves if they finally get high-level production out of talents like Rachel Bootsma or Marina Garcia. And the Bears have a very good recruiting class of their own, one we ranked one spot below Georgia earlier this year.

Still, most coaches would rather be in Georgia's position than any other. Instead of relying on heavy lifts from unproven freshmen or breakout seasons from enigmatic talents, Georgia gets to lean on a nucleus of battle-tested Bulldogs who have already tasted the spoils of NCAA victory many of them two years running.

So, preseason-favorite status probably falls to Stanford, but with one big caveat: this is still clearly a team battle that could go any which way, and the next four months of swimming will bring a lot of changes and revelations to each contending team. In fact, Georgia might be happy to be picked against this early in the year. After all, the Bulldogs were overshadowed by a flashier team at this time last year, too and we all know how that season turned out.

Cal cruised to a 161-124 victory over Wisconsin in its final home dual meet of the fall.

BERKELEY Led by double-winners Elizabeth Pelton and Marina Garcia, No. 4 California downed No. 19 Wisconsin, 161-124, in the Golden Bears' final home dual meet of the fall Friday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The Badgers won the first two events of the afternoon before Cal broke through in event No. 3 the 200-yard freestyle. Pelton powered to victory in 1:47.48, with teammates Caroline Piehl (1:50.37) and Cierra Runge (1:51.15) placing second and third all in season-best times. The result gave Cal an edge in the team race it would not relinquish.

The Bears followed with a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 back, led by Missy Franklin's 54.36. Kelly Naze was second in 56.15 and Jasmine Mau third in 56.32.

Garcia, coming off a runner-up showing in the 1000 free earlier in the meet, captured the 100 breaststroke in a season-best 1:02.93.

Cal claimed the top four spots in the 200 butterfly, with Noemie Thomas nipping Rachel Bootsma for the top spot, 2:00.98 to 2:01.02. Catherine Breed was right behind in 2:01.35.

Farida Osman added to the Bears' total of season-best marks with a 23.14 victory in the 50 free.

Pelton cruised to her second individual win with a convincing swim in the 200 back (1:54.58). Her time was more than seven seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Kelly Naze (2:01.80).

In the next event, Garcia claimed her second victory of the day, as well, taking the 200 breast by three full seconds in 2:15.29, her lowest time of the year.

"Marina is coming into her own and I thought Elizabeth Pelton did a really nice job," head coach Teri McKeever said. "Noemie Thomas and Rachel Bootsma are also putting together a real nice 1-2 punch for us in the fly."

Celina Li posted the Bears' final swimming triumph with a wall-to-wall win in the 400 individual medley in 4:21.14.

In diving, Cal's Anne Kastler swept both events, taking first on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 305.10 and leading the field on the 1-meter board at 284.48.

"We're learning to balance stuff in and out of the pool," McKeever said. "Having to integrate those at different times can positively or negatively impact your performance at the moment, but it's important to stay focused on the long term. I think an awesome part of college swimming is to get the athletes racing tough in less than ideal situations. I think that will pay dividends when you are ready to go fast."

The double-dual also featured racing by the men's teams, with Cal prevailing, 169-116.

The Bears travel to Salt Lake City for a match-up at Utah next Friday. Cal's next home appearance will be Jan. 30 when it hosts USC.

Martin beats Franklin, but Cal still crushes Wisconsin at home

http://swimswam.com/martin-beats-franklin-cal-still-crushes-wisconsin-home/

Women's Meet

Perhaps the race of the night was the 100 free, where Wisconsin's best swimmer, U.S. National Teamer Ivy Martin, went toe-to-toe with American Olympic hero Missy Franklin of Cal. The sprint freestyles are Martin's bread and butter, and though Franklin is at her best in backstroke, she's no slouch in the 100 free in fact, she was 3rd at last year's NCAA Championships.

Martin won the intense battle, though, pressing out to a three-tenth lead at the 50-mark and holding on to win by just .07. Neither time was spectacular (Martin was 49.13, Franklin 49.20), but it was still an outstanding race between two elite talents in the thick of tough training.

Franklin was coming off a win in the 100 back, where she went 54.36 and led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Cal ladies. Though she wound up swimming all freestyle last postseason, there's a good chance Franklin moves into at least one backstroke race for what's expected to be her last collegiate season. She looked good in this 100 back, and really wasn't challenged at all.

Martin, meanwhile, was unstoppable in her other event, the 100 fly. She went 53.93 in that race to blow out Cal's tough Canadian freshman Noemie Thomas.

Elizabeth Pelton also won twice for Cal. The junior was a quick 1:47.58 to win the 200 free easily, another 1-2-3 sweep for Cal. Pelton would come back to win the 200 back in 1:54.58, and by that point, Cal was exhibitioning most of its swimmers.

The Bears also got three solid individual swims, two of them wins, from sophomore Marina Garcia. She swept the breaststrokes, going 1:02.93 and 2:15.79. In a unique event combo, Garcia's third individual race was the 1000 free, where she took second overall in 10:08.17.

The Cal women are notoriously weak in distance free, though, and Wisconsin's Jenny Holtzen took full advantage. The junior won that 1000 easily in 10:01.84, and came back to triumph in a very tight 500 free battle. She trailed Cal's Catherine Breed for most of the race, but took over at the 400-mark and closed to the wall first in 4:52.15. Breed was 4:52.23.

Wisconsin won two more tight battle in both relays. The team of Annie Tamblyn, Anna Meinholz, Martin and Chase Kinney went 1:41.30 to nip Cal by a few tenths in the 200 medley and grab an early points lead. That was headed by a nice 23.31 fly split from Martin, plus a 22.76 anchor leg from Kinney to hold off a charging Franklin and Farida Osman on the two Cal relays.

Osman won the individual 50 for Cal, going 23.14 to top Kinney.

Wisconsin also won the 400 free relay, going 3:23.85, led by a 49.30 leadoff split from Martin.

The visitors swam much better than the score indicates. It seemed like most of the close races broke in Wisconsin's favor, but the Badgers just didn't have the all-around firepower to run with Cal in the points. The Bears were too deep and too talented, and basically every event that wasn't a Badger touchout was a dominating Cal sweep.

Noemie Thomas won the 200 fly, going 2:00.98, and that was yet another 1-2-3 California sweep. Celina Li took the 400 IM late in 4:21.14, but that was well after the meet was already in hand. Also helping the cause was Anne Kastler, who swept the diving events for the home team.

That added up to a 161-124 win for Cal, which gets back in the win column after dropping a big meet to Texas last weekend.
