Would have been nice to have Abbey in Berkeley during the major recruiting weekend, but spending the weekend in SLO is a much better bonding experience for her and her future teammates. No offense to Ledecky, Small, Drabot, Cox, Stanzi, or Adams, but I'd take Abbey over all of them.

Distance free and open water star Chenoa Devine (on the right next to coach Ray Wieser) will stay in-state for her college career after verbally committing to the California Golden Bears. Current Photo via Billy Doughty

Distance free and open water star Chenoa Devine will stay in-state for her college career after verbally committing to the California Golden Bears.

Devine, a high school senior in the class of 2016, is USA Junior National Teamer in both pool swimming and open water. She qualified in the long course meter 400 freestyle and also made the team in open water based on her results from the 2015 Open Water Nationals.

For an open water specialist, Devine has remarkably good mid-sprint range in the pool, which should make her an excellent asset in the sprint-heavy NCAA. She's a 5-time section champ in California high school swimming, three times in the 500 free and twice in the 200.

Devine's Top Times
1650 free: 16:20.33
500 free: 4:46.41
200 free: 1:48.53
100 free: 51.85
Devine is a great get for Cal based on need the Bears will lose their top distance swimmer when former NCAA record-holder Cierra Runge transfers to Wisconsin after sitting out this season. Devine should help immediately fill in that distance gap.

She should continue to be an intriguing open water prospect as well. Devine was 13th in the 10K at the U.S. National Championships in 2015, which essentially served as both the nation's World Championship Trials and its Olympic Trials. Devine was the 4th-best 18-and-under finisher in that event.

Currently, Devine is wrapping up her senior season in Davis, California, where she swims for the Davis Arden Racing Team, also known as DART, under coaches Billy Doughty and Ray Wieser.

She joins a Cal class that is already looking pretty well-rounded. In addition to Devine's distance prowess, the team recruited IMer/breaststroker Madi Hurst, backstroker/freestyler Aislinn Light and all-around star Keaton Blovad, our 13th-ranked prospect in the class.

Thought this year, with another title to our belt and our football team is 4-0 :p, we would have gotten more commitments from the top 20! Any negative recruitment going on or are we just on a tight budget and trying to land the big fishes?

Why is Cierra Runge not returning to Cal after sitting this season to train for the Olympic team? She potentially might have been the top distance free-styler that Cal has had in quite some time. Her loss really hurts! Why does she not care about the academics of Cal?
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Pretty well known that Adams wasn't coming to Cal for awhile, but surprise she didn't end up on the farm. Cox is way underrated and SwimSwam's article downplays her potential because she moved up this Summer.

Bears really need Drabot and either a big time transfer (distance, middle distance, or breast) or international in the Spring.

Bears are a little hemmed in scholly wise, but Teri didn't overreach for mega recruits. With Abbey and without Cierra, had room for two of Drabot, Small, and Cox. Totally threaded the needle last year and had some misses this year. Read SwimSwam comments at your own peril to see how much overt negative recruiting there is against Teri and Cal. Nobody hates Washington State or Oregon State.

Wow, also very surprised that Claire chose Texas. But this is very good news for us, because the Furd with Claire would have done wonders for their medley relays. Hahaha, I'm actually a little relieved by this. I guess we should have believed her interview when she narrowed her choices to three. Claire is a tremendous swimmer, but I don't think any team titles are heading to Texas anytime soon with the Bay Area power duopoly. Losing out on Hannah makes me really bummed. Really wanted her badly in the end, and she would have really helped our lack of depth in the 500 Free and maybe 1650 Free. So how does Arizona and Texas have all this scholly money the past two years? A lot of those girls are getting half schooly money. Okay Wonderbread (aka Katie D.), you are our last big time hope. Please, please, please join your buddy Amy. You will be a tremendous addition to our freestyle relays along with your IM prowress.

Borrowing a friend's mobile so this will be brief and lacking pictures & links...

Have just heard that Trojans have snagged a top class international, Louise Hansson, an elite sprinter from Sweden.

SC's sprint relays will be a force to be reckoned with down the stretch, considering that they will be able to field a squad featuring Anik, Stanzi, Tatum and now Louise!

USC Lands Another All-World Sprinter: Sweden’s Louise Hansson

Swedish national teamer Louise Hansson has elected to swim for USC and gave the Trojans her verbal commitment last week. Hansson represented Sweden at the 2014 European Junior Championships and was a member of Sweden’s silver medal-winning 4100 medley relay (along with Sarah Sjostrom, Michelle Coleman and Jennie Johansson) that set the European Record at FINA World Championships in Kazan this past summer.

Hansson represents the club team Helsingborgs Simsllskap in Sweden. Her best times in LCM (with SCY conversions) are:

100 freestyle – 54.62 (47.76)
200 freestyle – 1:58.45 (1:43.82)
100 butterfly – 58.29 (51.25)
200 IM – 2:12.72 (1:56.68)

Breaststroker Alexa Buckley to Trade One Berkeley (NJ) for Another (CA)

Mountainside, New Jersey's Alexa Buckley has given a verbal commitment to the University of California Golden Bears, effectively trading one Berkeley for another. Buckley is a senior at The Pingry School in Martinsville, New Jersey, and a member of Berkeley Aquatic Club in Berkeley Heights.

Buckley is a 1:02/2:16 breaststroker with a strong 200 IM and short-end freestyle range (50-200). At the USA Swimming Futures meet in Greensboro this past summer, Buckley finaled in the 200 IM (3rd), 100 breast (12th), and 200 breast (15th). While the breaststrokes weren't her fastest times, she did drop nearly 3 seconds in the 200 IM. Buckley also split 58.50 in Berkeley's 4x100m free relay and 2:06.20 in the 4200 free relay. Her best times over the last two seasons include:

SCY LCM
100 breast 1:02.57 1:12.56
200 breast 2:16.58 2:42.37
200 IM 2:03.98 2:22.38
50 free 24.43 27.63
100 free 52.26 59.61
200 free 1:52.92 2:07.91

Buckley's best times in the 100/200 breast would have scored in the "C" finals at 2015 Pac-12 Championships. The two events are among Cal's weakest, with only Marina Garcia Urzainqui and Maija Roses scoring at conference.

The Golden Bears have also received verbal nods from Aislinn Light, Chenoa Devine, and Keaton Blovad for the class of 2020.

Originally thought Bears would add Marsh or Mykkanen as a legacy, but Light seems to be the legacy. Dad and brother are Cal grads and her sister is a current student. Doesn't have Farida's upside as a swimmer, but does have non Alex Keaton Cal family ties.

One underlying assumption has been that Baker may be the medley breast leg of the future. Not sure that's a great assumption any more. Teri wouldn't be adding back (Light) and breast (Buckley) dual meet depth without another high end backstroker if Baker were the future in breast. Take care of breast in 2017 (Popov, Aroesty) and see how Keaton develops.

Thought I'd compile a rough list of the known major commits to help give us a rough idea of how the recruiting's working out for all the programmes at this stage in the game.

SwimSwam's national rankings: #1 (only their Top 20 has been published?)
CollegeSwimming's national rankings: (1)

CollegeSwimming has a massive database that all the swimming community including scouts & coaches pay to use, believe they employ an objective series of algorithms to calculate the power index for each individual. However their ranking's only as accurate as the data that has been entered, and in the case of some swimmers, the data available is quite incomplete.

Keep in mind that different programmes have different needs and available scholly slots, so neither of these 2 ranking systems tells the whole story. Other equally or more important considerations also come into play that aren't factored into these power index ratings, such as mutual fit with the coaches/team members/social environment, academics, geography, legacy etc etc (well you know all of this already lol).

Missing quite a bit and may have got some info wrong, so please help me out with corrections & updates, cheers

Great update, UAC-thanks.

Leverenz is already a freshman at UT. Per a picture of Jessica Merritt, Alyssa Marsh has already visited Auburn (her dad's alma mater and former employer with both Durdens).

Moriah Simonds is a bit of a mystery. Georgia's really hurting although may still have a shot at Becca Mann ('SC still leads).

UA, thank you for all of your work on recapping these recruits, signed and unsigned. Interesting on the unsigned where some of the top recruits haven't visited us or some of the legacy recruits who did not visit. Still to be had some big names out there!

Seems that the PAC-12 Bay Area schools are adjusting to both new conference scholly rules and being at the top of the recruiting heap. Since scholly amounts can't be cut, it's a little difficult to pursue the most elite recruits outside the PAC or Big Ten since other conferences can still reduce $s year to year. Not really a surprise that Indiana stars Adams and Burchill passed in Big Ten and PAC schools, who likely didn't offer full rides. Small passed on Cal and 'SC for Tennessee. Cha ching!

Legacy angle also kind of makes sense. Mary Pelton and Emily Eastin are really good swimmers, but can make bigger contributions and get more $s at UCLA and Michigan than they would at Cal or LSJU. Similar thing for Marsh and Mykkanen. Would also guess that Runge's younger sister will swim for Wisconsin. The Steffens girls are water polo superstars and LSJU and Cal legacies, but the youngest one swims for SDSU. Similar story for the younger Leverenz.

Beata was spotted on the UW-Madison campus this weekend. Will she become a Badgers teammate of Cierra's next year, or choose the Lady Vols instead? Hoos might also be in her future as she had made an unofficial visit to IU back in the Spring. Stay tuned...

Pretty well known that Adams wasn't coming to Cal for awhile, but surprise she didn't end up on the farm.
Bears really need Drabot and either a big time transfer (distance, middle distance, or breast) or international in the Spring.

Yeah after Claire hadn't shown up @ our major recruiting weekend, I too was resigned to her committing to LSJU based on an earlier (unofficial) visit to the farm this year, with her academics & prowess in the pool pointing to a natural fit with either of the two Bay Area powerhouses... Will confess to not being too disappointed that Adams elected to be a Longhorn over a Furd :p Not sure 'bout Carmel, but have heard that Austin is culturally & socially closer to SF or NYC than say Dallas. More importantly, Carol Capitani (Cal swim alumna) has done wonders with her building up her UT squad who may well present a credible challenge to the big three down the road...

Which leaves us with Katie Drabot, whom we've all been talking up a storm right from the beginning as a perfect fit with Bears. Well some of us are thinking that Stanfurd's likely to be hosting their recruiting bash this weekend, so we may get an idea of who Greg Meehan will be courting very soon. Megan Byrnes & Katie Ledecky will surely be there, with Katie D expected to make an appearance too. Allie Szekely could also show up on the farm, making this her 5th & final trip. Not sure how admissions work vs the swim recruiting @ LSJU, but wouldn't be too surprised to hear a bunch of commitments (not necessarily to the Furd lol) soon after this...

Oh, and a slight technical correction for tedbear's benefit: Katie is synonymous with "Wonderbread", but only in the presence of or in conjunction with Amy... haha

Maryland hoops coach Lefty Driessel vowed to make Maryland the UCLA of the East. Didn't happen, but Duke swimming is becoming the UCLA of the East: great school, good facilities, recruit nice kids who are good students, but most can't contribute at bigger programs with realistic national title aspirations. Texas is a much bigger threat than Duke, UCLA, and Michigan will ever be. Ivies don't attract strong enough swimmers and there are a lot of strong swim programs who can't compete academically.

Guess SC's a natural fit for Becca when considering her OW (Open Water) and literary/theatrical aspirations. Cheesy outfit aside lol, makes perfect sense as Mann's a published high fantasy novelist to boot!
