Wow, so many moving parts to this season because of the Olympic year, so Teri's head must be spinning. But you know, when you recruit on this level, these things happen. So, we are still waiting to see if Noemie shows up on campus, eh. Well, if she is blue shirting too, then I think we are going to have to give Teri a pass this year, because even a superwoman performance from our superstar frosh isn't going to make up for the loss of Missy, Caroline, Melanie, Camille, Kaylin, Cierra, and possibly Noemie. But for the future, I think Abbey + Cierra >>> Ledecky. Cierra is a smart girl. She is not going to sacrifice a Berkeley education for a short term chase for the Olympic team. Plus, look at all the relationships she has already developed with current team members. I know, never say never, but I would absolutely shocked if she stayed at ASU.

Jessica Hardy said all the right things in 2007. Claimed she thought about all the Nobel Laureates while on the blocks for relays during NCAAs. Is married to her Cal swimmer boyfriend. When Salo, her club coach, became the 'SC coach, she immediately turned pro. Never took classes at 'SC and still doesn't have a degree. Allegedly going to finish via ASU online.

Janet Evans was comparable to Ledecky in her era. Swam two years on the farm, turned pro and followed her coach to Texas, and eventually graduated from 'SC.

Everyone on the current team (minus Amy, Jenna, and Madi) saw Missy swim injured. Breed was a Captain whose promising career was cut short by injuries. Acker and Grima are childhood friends with Maddy Schafer and Jasmine Tosky, conference rivals who never finished their college careers.

This is nothing new for Cal swimming or the University. Peter Rocca won multiple medals in '76, but was overshadowed by John Naber. Rocca was in his prime in '80 and was a Captain of the Olympic team that didn't compete. His window had closed by '84. Madison Kennedy was a Cal great and one of Baker's mentors. She may never make an Olympic team. Pelton was third in two events at the 2008 trials and just missed making the team. There's a very fickle window at the highest levels.

How many Cal profs are poached before or after Nobel Prizes? Doesn't mean that Cal should back off the next Missy or George Smoot, but it does mean that some world class talents may bail occasionally despite making major contributions during and after their time at Cal.

Almost certainly means the major recruiting weekend will be SDSU. Retreat next weekend after the Grambling game. Would be asking a lot of recruits to come back from Singapore and go to Cal (even if it's still the center of the universe) over Labor Day Weekend.

Was a little nervous about Noemie since Canada is so passive aggressive about their Olympic Trials (just after NCAAs). Means that most Canadians either redshirt or start taper after NCAAs. Noemie will be extra rested for the Frderal Way meet because she won't be rested at all for PAC-12s.

Theoretically Bears could have lost ten 2016 swimmers (Bootsma, Pelton, Farida, Marina, Cierra, Noemie, McL, Baker, Amy, and Abbey). That would have been half the 2016 team. Bears would have destroyed (- 525 points) everyone with Abbey and Cierra. Bears now are roughly even on returning points with LSJU and Georgia, but Cal frosh are much better than Georgia and 'furdettes Eastin, Stevens, Williams will generate virtually zero relay points, especially compared to Bear froskies + Hull.

Georgia takes a big hit losing Canadian CVL. One quasi surprise is LSJU's Lia Neal. She's pretty far back in the 50/100 and completely out of it in the 200. Doubt she makes the team. Redshirt might have helped. Manuel's a lock in the 50/100, but has problems in the 200.

Abbey and Cierra have work to do, but Abbey may make it as a 100 relay swimmer and Cierra has a chance in the 400 and 800. McL is probably the best positioned of the current Bears. Baker has multiple shots. Bootsma, Pelton, and Amy have work to do, but all were injured/sick this Summer.

Bears have a reasonable chance to repeat as long as Pelton and Amy have no injury complications and everyone else swims as expected. Bears need at least one of Drabot, Small, and Cox in this class. Having McL, Baker, and Cierra in the same class as 3 legs of the 800 Relay is less than ideal. Teri needs to add an additional relay leg in each of the next three recruiting classes. Also would have been nice to have Cierra as part of her original recruiting class since the 2018 recruiting class will be extremely deep in-state, nationally, and internationally.

She isn't, but she probably should. Current rankings: 24th in the 50, 18th in the 100, and 42nd in the 200. There are some foreign swimmers in the U.S. database, but only the top two make it in the 50 Free. Six in both the 100/200 Frees.

Great news! I didn't know Valerie Hull was 6-3. She didn't seem as tall in her twitter pictures.

edit: Just noticed though, the only diver who made the NCAA's Eleanor Smart is not listed on the roster. Wondering about her status.......

Ellie Smart just missed scoring (19th) in the platform at NCAAs and isn't on the roster.

Didn't realize Celina was studying at Haas. Cal has a disproportionately low number of Rhodes Scholars, but Acker could win one if she's not set on starting med school right away. 3.95 GPA, swam on an NCAA championship relay, and an NCAA championship team.

Not sure if Breed's in med school yet, but that's the plan. Part of the reason life long Duke fan Maija didn't stay home was because it's much harder for Duke undergrads to be admitted to Duke Med School. Her sister swam for Mt Holyoke and is at Duke Med now. Mom's an alumna and both parents are faculty members.
