PULLMAN Cal set three more pool records on day two of its dual meet with Washington State Saturday and emerged with the overall victory, 299.50-131.50.

Freshman Amy Bilquist started the run with a Gibb Pool record in the 50-yard free when she touched in 23.14. On Friday, Bilquist set a new standard in the 100 backstroke.

Later during the morning competition, senior Elizabeth Pelton, the American-record holder in the 200 back, lowered the pool mark in her specialty to 1:57.18. In addition, the foursome of Valerie Hull, Rachel Bootsma, Bilquist and Farida Osman finished off the meet with a pool record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:32.76.

The Bears established three Gibb Pool marks Friday night among the 11 races contested.

On Saturday, Bilquist added a title in the 50 back (25.58), while Osman and Pelton joined her with two individual event wins apiece. Osman took the 50 fly (24.18) and 100 free (50.84), and Pelton claimed the 200 free (1:49.21) to go with her 200 back victory.

Other Bears to come out on top were Kelly Naze in the 200 individual medley (2:03.85), Celina LI in the 200 butterfly (2:00.12) and Marina Garcia in the 500 free (5:00.83).

Cal, the defending NCAA champion, returns to Berkeley for its home opener next week, hosting Utah Thursday at 5 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Cal women's swim shines against Washington State

By Isabella Busacca | Staff

The Bears were dealt a hand of cards this weekend that they are normally not given. Stepping foot on Washington State's territory, the Cal women's swim team shined light on its dominance, claiming 299.50 points to the Cougars' 131.50 points.

The two-day swim meet, which ran from Friday afternoon to Saturday, featured a unique array of nearly all swim events, ranging from 50-yard to 1,000-yard events in the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medleys and relays.

This enabled many swimmers to dip their feet into events they typically do not race. One particular instance was that of senior Kelly Naze, who took home both the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:09.34 and the 200-yard IM in a stellar 2:03.85. Naze placed seventh in the 200-meter IM at the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships with a time of 2:16.18. Swimming the 1,000-yard freestyle, however, was unforged territory.

"I was very excited to swim the 1,000-yard freestyle," Naze said. "I've actually never swam the event, so I really wanted to prove that I was capable to swim more than just my normal races."

The Bears racked up victory after victory, never once letting up, and many of those titles came from the fresh faces of the newest members on the team. Freshman Amy Bilquist claimed the 200-yard free in 1:51.13, while freshman Katie McLaughlin took the 50-yard free in 23.73 and 100-yard free in 50.91, and freshman Kathleen Baker won the 400-yard IM in 4:22.35. As for the older members, junior Farida Osman seized the 100-yard butterfly in a quick 54.73, and senior Elizabeth Pelton captured the 500-yard free with a time of 5:00.74.

"Our freshmen are absolutely hilarious, and they bring such good energy, so everyone feels so positive," Naze said. "A lot of our freshmen have that sense of 'just get your hands on the wall first,' so it's really inspiring."

On Saturday, the Bears continued to hone its win. Bilquist won yet another title in the 50-yard back in 25.58, while Osman secured the 50-yard butterfly in 24.18 and the 100-yard free in 50.84. Pelton put up a strong front and took the 200-yard free with a time of 1:49.21, junior Celina Li claimed the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.12, and junior Marina Garcia won the 500-yard free in 5:00.83.

The swim meet brought with it more than just proof of the Bears' impressive record-holding tendencies. Naze enjoyed her experiences out of the pool just as much as her times in the water.

"I would say the funniest part was when the song "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)" came on Saturday morning, and my whole team started dancing, and we were also dancing into the meet, so we were just having a lot of fun racing," Naze said.

The Bears were also able to experience swimming in an indoor pool, as opposed to their normal outdoor environment.

"I think it was really cool getting to see a campus I don't think any of us had ever seen before," Naze said. "I think it definitely reduces the stress in some ways just because we get to go experience something outside our home territory."

Cal will lose five seniors after this season: Liz Pelton, Rachel Bootsma, Kelly Naze, Rachel Acker & Alicia Grima. Will the Bears be able to bring in top quality talent to fill the void? I guess that Cal fans should count Abbey Weitzeil as the first one. Will she be a freshman next season? Pelton & Bootsma are elite while Naze & Acker are solid contributors for the Bears...GO BEARS!

Different events, but points and scholly $s are roughly equivalent:

-Bootsma=Weitzeil
-Pelton=?
-Cierra=Hull +?
-Naze=Keaton Blovad
-Acker=Chenoa Devine

Additional commits: Maddie Muphy, Light, Alexa Buckley, Anina Lund

Still unclear if there's room for Courtney Mykkanen. Hull + Murphy + the others probably=Cierra + Grima $s.

Need an impact international or transfer to cover Pelton's points and $s to remain in 2017 NCAA title contention.

For the 2015-16 season, a group of five Golden Bears – a regular blog squad – will be producing Between the Lanes segments to give fans an inside look at Cal’s women’s swimming & diving team. The crew is made up of Marina Garcia, Valerie Hull, Catherine Ladd, Katie McLaughlin and Maija Roses.

Each entry will include a video along with a short written element, and this week’s initial post (click on the link above) focuses on the six newcomers to the swim team and helps set the stage for Thursday’s home opener against Utah, a dual meet that begins at 5 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex and will feature the Cal men’s team, as well.

Check back at CalBears.com or on the Cal women’s swimming & diving Facebook and Twitter pages for more on the Bears this season.

Between the Lanes episode 1

Coming off a successful national championship run last season, your Golden Bears are back and hungry for more. With six new additions to the swim team, we have spent the past couple of weeks getting to know the “cubs” – Amy Bilquist, Kathleen Baker, Jenna Campbell, Madi Hurst, Valerie Hull and Katie McLaughlin, and developing our own, new team dynamic!

The cubs started out the year getting to find out who their big sisters were and going to family pod meals. In mid-September, we traveled down to the central coast, starting with the annual Queen of the Pool races at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Then it was on to Pismo Beach, where the team spent three days together training in the ocean and spending time with one another while boogie boarding, trying new restaurants and doing a little bit of shopping. Training is in full swing, with swimming, dancing, yoga and strength training challenging us to improve each and every day.

Our first home competition of the year is this Thursday, Oct. 15 at Spieker Aquatics Center at 5 p.m. This is one of four home meets this year, so be sure to come out and cheer as the Golden Bears take on Utah!

One splash, and the Cal women’s swim team will dive into the Spieker Aquatics Center for one of the last times, as the team embraces both the rise of the upcoming California Aquatic Center and the rise of its reputation. This is the first time this season that the Bears will compete at home when they face Utah on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The meet will feature a myriad of events, ranging from short to long-distance swims, which will display both teams’ talents. Last year at the meet against Utah, the Bears destroyed the Utes 186.5 to 109.5, capturing 11 of the 16 events at the dual standoff. Cal, one of the top ranked teams in the nation, is looking forward to proclaiming its dominance against Utah.

Senior Kelly Naze welcomes her role as a senior on the team and espouses the fluidity of the program.

“I think every team that I have been on here at Cal, especially now that this is my fourth year, is a little different than the team before,” Naze said. “And this year, I get a really good feeling for different ways than I felt about the team last year.”

Utah will be competing against Cal on Thursday and Stanford the day after. This is the first time this season the Utes will leave the comforts of their home state to venture westward to embark on sunnier adventures, and to their hope, brighter results. Utah is traveling to northern California after a loss against the University of Southern California, 138.5-112.5. Despite the overall loss, the Utes were able to capture four events.

In the last meeting against Cal, senior Stina Colleu of Utah demonstrated her abilities in the breaststroke, capturing wins in both the 100-yard event, with a solid time of 1:03.71, and a winning time of 2:17.67 in the 200-yard event. Fellow teammate and then senior Petra Soininen seemingly flew to first in the 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 2:03.67.

Utah brings to its slate a noteworthy new face in freshman Jordan Anderson. She disbanded USC to seize a win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.98. Returning member and sophomore Jenna Marsh dominated the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 57.54. Junior Brianna Francis won the 200-yard IM in 2:07.97. These swimmers are all expected to make appearances in this week’s meet.

Per usual, Cal can be expected to bring rocket fast times to Thursday’s meet, according to previous meets’ trials. The swimmers on either sides of the pool prepare to face off this week in order to surmise tribulations and prove victorious. The Bears brought to last weekend’s dual meet against Washington State an optimistic, silly, yet competitive mentality and plan on doing the same for Thursday’s meet against the Utes.

To the swimmers, being optimistic and silly is a must under stressful situations, as the collegiate-level athletes strive to have fun parallel to record setting times. One splash into the water marks a new testament for each swimmer to find that perfect balance.

Cal Downs Utah, 174-120, Under the Lights at Spieker Aquatics Complex

By Cal Athletics on Thu, October 15, 2015

Cal Athletics

BERKELEY Every season, the home opener proves to be a special occasion for the freshmen on the Cal women's swimming & diving team. And Thursday's meet against Utah was no exception.

Rookies Amy Bilquist and Katie McLaughlin claimed two events each to lead the Golden Bears to a 174-120 victory over the Utes under the lights at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The duo, plus freshmen Kathleen Baker, Madi Hurst, Jenna Campbell and diver Phoebe LaMay, as well as transfer Valerie Hull, is already having a significant impact on the squad.

"The freshmen and Valerie Hull have done a great job coming in and assimilating, and they're going to be a really important piece for us this year," head coach Teri McKeever said. "They're definitely accepting that challenge and showing everybody how tough they really are."

Bilquist earned her first win at the meet with a time of 23.05 in the 50-yard freestyle, then claimed the 200 backstroke in 1:57.03. McLaughlin secured victories in the 200 free (1:46.65) and 500 free (4:50.40).

"The first meet is super special to be able to put on the Cal cap and go on the pool deck," Bilquist said. "It makes you realize how special it is to be here and really appreciate every opportunity to swim this season."

Overall, Cal prevailed in 13 of the 16 events, including the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. Other winners on the evening were veterans Marina Garcia in the 1000 free (10:09.91), Elizabeth Pelton in the 100 back (55.50), Rachel Bootsma in the 200 butterfly (2:01.09), Farida Osman in the 100 free (50.22), Noemie Thomas in the 100 fly (53.78), Anne Kastler on the 1-meter springboard (288.15) and Celina Li in the 400 individual medley (4:16.23).

Despite a number of impressive performances, McKeever said she is more concerned about effort than times at this point of the season.

"It's more about the way that they're showing up and their intention of just racing," McKeever said. "I thought some of the times were a little better than I expected. But we've talked about not focusing on the times, rather racing tough and executing. Pick something small and do that really well don't worry about the whole picture at this stage."

The defending NCAA champion Bears return to action on Friday, Oct. 30 when they host San Jose State in a dual meet that will get underway at 2 p.m.

Murphy and Thomas Post Nation Leading Fly as Cal Rolls Over Utah

The Cal Bears hosted the Utah Utes today, easily handling their PAC-12 guests 174-120 in the women’s dual and 165-128 for the men. While the Utes were no match for the strength of the Bears’ roster, both teams managed to turn in times that will impact the early season rankings.

In the women’s dual, Cal won 13 of the 16 events. Amy Bilquist and Katie McLaughlin were double event winners, with Bilquist taking the 50 free (23.05) and 200 back (1:57.03,) and McLaughlin winning the 200 and 500 freestyles. McLaughlin’s times of 1:47.65 and 4:50.40 are currently ranked #3 and #2 so far for the 2015-16 NCAA Season.

Other Cal times making dents in the rankings were Celina Li’s 400 IM win of 4:16.23 which ranks #2 so far, and Noemie Thomas‘ 100 fly now topping the list with 53.78.

The Cal ladies were not the only impressive performances of the day. Breaststroke was a bright spot for the Utah women, as Stina Colleou was able to edge Cal’s Kathleen Baker in the 100, 1:03.66 to 1:03.88 for the win. Utah also took ownership of the 200 breast, as Colleou (2:15.45) finished second, just behind teammate Genevieve Robertson. Robertson’s 2:14.49 is good enough for 4th so far in the NCAA rankings. Ute diver Amanda Casillas also won the 1-meter in 302.70, over 20 points ahead of Cal’s Phoebe LaMay.

The Cal men managed to take the top spot in all but two events, with Andrew Seliskar and Ryan Murphy leading the way, taking two events each. Seliskar swam the 200 breast in 2:00.46, and held off Utah’s Paul Unger in the 100 back, 49.11 to 49.25. Murphy won the 50 free in 20.15 and took the win and top ranked time so far in the NCAA with 47.22 for the 100 fly.

Other high ranking times turned in by Cal include Josh Prenot’s 1:45.27 in the 200 fly that lands him in the #2 spot nationally, and Jacob Pebley’s 200 back that ranks him #3 with 1:45.77. Utah’s Kristian Kron was right behind him with a #5 ranked 1:46.00 backstroke as well.

Utah took first and second in both diving events. Josiah Purss won the 1-meter (363.08) and 3-meter ( 362.70,) while teammate Jake Crayne was second in both, scoring 317.40 and 343.80 in those events respectively. Utah’s only other event winner was Bence Kiraly in the 500 free, whose 4:28.04 ranks #6 so far on the season. Kiraly also nearly took the win in the 200 free away from Cal’s Trent Williams, who out-touched him 1:37.08 to 1:37.44. Those times land them third and fourth in the NCAA at this date.

Tomorrow, Utah continues their road trip with a dual at Stanford, starting at 2pm PST.

Just noticed that Simone isn't listed in the events contested thus far @ LSJU's dual v. the Utes down on the farm (200 free, 200 medley relay, 50 & 100 free etc).

Live results here (meet is still in progress): http://gostanford.com/fls/30600/stats/m-swim/2015_10_16_Utah/index.htm

Manuel was previously absent from the WSU competition on 25 Sept, which at the time I had assumed was down to being sick or something...

Anyone heard anything that isn't speculative rumour? :p No official word from Meehan AFAIK...

On the off chance that Simone may be redshirting (completely unfounded & wishful thinking on my part lol), I'll admit that'd massively help to compensate somewhat for Cierra's lost points @ NCAAs this year!

Don't get me excited UAC! If Simone is deferring, then we are in the driver's seat for the championship. Although I would rather have it where Abbey, Missy, Cierra, Simone, and Katie Ledecky were all on board. That would be an epic meet!!!

..there is still no listing of Kathie Wickstrand as the temporary coach. Did however see her at the Utah meet running around. Wonder if this is another one of those failure by the Calbears site to update the team's profile or are they trying to fill the spot?

I was also able to attend the doubleheader at Spieker yesterday. These early season meets are usually fun albeit a bit frustrating in that you usually have the big guns swimming off events

...

The men's team appears to have fewer obvious holes compared to the women. Breaststroke for the women was certainly helped by adding Baker, despite her loss to a junior Ute yesterday.

Kathleen's impressive versatility will certainly help Bears in a host of events starting with our well-known deficiencies in breast. Hopefully Teri will reward Baker's taking one for the team with extra special training in the back (with a spot of help from Boots, Liz, Amy & co.) in this Olympic year, as that's where Thleen's future really lies nationally & internationally! Recruiting Nikol Popov next year or magically convincing Viktoria Gunes to make the journey from Turkey to Berkeley would be a godsend, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves quite yet lol

Regarding distance, Cierra Runge's absence was notable, and will only be magnified at conference and nationals. Big loss and I still do not understand what happened.

Honestly we'll just have to face the sobering fact that Cierra's impending transfer will literally leave the team in a massive hole, with no realistic hopes for scoring at all in the distance events @ NCAAs this year (our 800 free relay will take a hit too). Unless an impact transfer or international materialises, somehow.

Baby :bear: Chenoa Devine might be of assistance come next season, as she's already capable of qualifying for NCs in the 1650 and on the cusp in the 500, but not a scorer yet at that highest level, nor a replacement for Cierra. 2016 commit Anina Lund will require further development before she's ready to make a scoring contribution at Nationals, though she's already poised to be a B scorer in the 500 free + the mile @ Pac-12 Champs.

On the other hand, nice swim by Katie McLaughlin in the 500 free.

kt had made a statement in the 800 free relay @ Worlds this past summer, and anyone capable of mastering the 200 fly surely has some considerable endurance & toughness under her belt hehe...still, I too was very pleasantly impressed with that 500 swim of McL's! Hmmm, wonder if that might develop into her 3rd individual for the Championships to go along with the 100 fly on Day 2 + 200 fly on Day 3? Otherwise Katie will have to tackle the difficult 100 fly-200 free double on Day 2, or the equally daunting 100 free followed by the killer 200 fly on Day 3, with just the 200 breast in between...

BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Assumed McL's program would be 800 Free Relay (Pelton, Baker, Acker), 50 Free, 200 Free Relay (Farida, Amy, Hull), 400 Medley (Boots, Baker, Farida), 200 Free, 200 Fly, and 400 Free Relay (Farida, Amy, Baker).

Bears have tons of fly depth (Boots, Farida, Noemie, Mau), so she can skip the 100 Fly for the 200 Free (Pelton, Acker, Campbell, Hull). Could swim the 500 Free instead of the 200 Free/50 double, but Bears don't have enough 50 depth. It's why they needed Hull when Abbey deferred. Not a bad problem to have, but teams with realistic title chances have to be all in and can't build for the future.

Yeah on reflection would agree your scenario for Katie might pan out best, BD

McL will shine in both the 100 fly & 200 free, but our deeper top-end talent in the shorter fly will result in kt providing a greater impact if she contests the 200 free (esp after losing Missy, Cierra, Camille & Caroline). 800 free relay will be relocated from Friday to Wed night this year, and Noemie will prob be our go-to flyer the 200 medley relay (or Farida if Amy turns out to be the more potent anchor), so Katie will be able to focus on just a single event on Fri.

Had originally thought the 500 free could turn out to be an option for Katie's untapped potential seeing our glaring holes there (no projected scorers this year). Also KV or Boots can always be inserted into the 200 free relay that day. Pretty sure though that McL would prefer to race the 50 on Thurs lol, as tackling the 200 free relay + 500 free immediately afterwards + 400 medley relay would indeed be quite a massive challenge! :p

As a relative newbie, can someone identify these former Cal greats. I sat near many of them and knew they were probably swimmers from the past. I did see many of the more recent grads i.e. Caitlin Leverenz, Camille Cheng, Melanie Klaren, and Taylor Nanfria, who were all helping out the program -selling raffle tickets or Cal clothing gear.

Cal women's swim dominates Utah Sunday, October 18, 2015

Karin Goh/Staff

By Isabella Busacca | Staff

Eat. Sleep. Swim.

A banner that reads these three simple words hangs above the Spieker Aquatics Complex and serves as a reminder of the Cal women's swim team's mentality. With a NCAA 2015 Championships title behind them and a bright future ahead, these swimmers devote themselves to success. As such, Cal dismantled Utah, 174-120, winning 13 of the 16 events at the meet Thursday.

The energy on both teams was unparalleled, as the swimmers competed under the dark night sky in the first nighttime meet the Bears have ever partaken in. Another abnormality this meet brought was the fact that both men and women competed at the same time, alternating events, creating an even larger team culture, as swimmers of both squads were able to cheer on their team.

Cal women's swim assistant head coach Kathie Wickstrand helped develop the swimmers' skills by allowing them to pick a single race they don't normally swim in to develop their skills in more unfamiliar events and choose a partner to watch and critique this race. This eased tensions for the swimmers, as they were able to gain confidence in the strokes that reflected their weaknesses.

"It's always nice to have a meet with the guys because they get a little more time between before their next event," Wickstrand said. "Tonight, we could really see who needs to work on turns or who needs to work on breakouts."

A few key wins on behalf of the Bears during the meet included victories in both relay events: the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Furthermore, senior Elizabeth Pelton took the 100-yard backstroke in 55.50 and senior Rachel Bootsma captured the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.09.

This meet was also the first home meet for the Bears, an especially momentous feat for the new members, who got to experience the strength of their home territory with each stroke they took.

Freshmen Katie McLaughlin and Amy Bilquist performed exceptionally, both capturing two individual races. McLaughlin took the 200-yard freestyle with a speedy time of 1:46.65 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.40. Bilquist conquered the 50-yard freestyle in 23.05 and the 200-yard backstroke in a fast time of 1:57.03.

The two freshmen are still adjusting to thinking of Cal as their home, but with the support of their team, UC Berkeley is not only bearable but also an exciting new atmosphere for all six freshmen and sophomore transfer Valerie Hull.

"The transition was definitely a little hard at first, but with our team supporting us, it made it that much easier, and it made us realize why we're here and why we want to be here," Bilquist said.

Cal head coach Teri McKeever and Wickstrand are granting the team a break from intense trainings by giving them the past weekend off their duties as swimmers.

McLaughlin took advantage of her free weekend by visiting her family home in Southern California, while Bilquist was thrilled to go house hunting with her parents, who are making the move from Indiana to Northern California.

Onto other news...not that these team rankings hold much significance as they are based on dual results and it's still early in the season, but we've managed to slip down a place from 8th to 7th. The Furd is ranked #5 whilst Bulldawgs sits @ #2.

On the bright side there should be correspondingly lower expectations and less pressure on Bears compared to having been rated #1 for much of last season...

btw some pretty fast times are already being achieved at this early stage of the season. Not too surprising I guess in an Olympic year. Will be good motivation for setting targets and training harder & smarter!

2015-16 Women’s NCAA Power Rankings – First Edition

Welcome to our first version of the 2015-16 NCAA Women’s Power Rankings, where, throughout the season, we’re looking to highlight each of the NCAA’s top 20 teams. It’s (very) early in the year, so these rankings are a mix of both how the teams have looked so far, and, ultimately, the team’s end-of-season prospects.

In addition, here’s some other factors we considered (these haven’t changed from last season):
• How the team looks so far this year
• Divers. It’s easy to ignore them to pander to the “what is diving doing with swimming” audience, but they’re part of the game, sorry.
• Year-over-year improvements, adds, etc.
• Depth and flexibility of roster, because teams with more options have a larger margin of error come NCAA’s.
• How the team placed last year at NCAA’s, and how many points they graduated.

Criteria we don’t consider:
• Giving love.
• How many friends you have on a team.
• How biased you think we are.
• Which team has the loudest, brashest, whiniest swimmers.
• Anonymous brags about how much or little rest teams had for their meets.
•Who sends us the most nasty Tweets and leaves the most nasty ‘anonymous’ ‘disinterested observer’ comments.

In other words: feel free to have your own rankings, your own opinions, and disagree with our rankings. Just don’t embarrass yourself while doing it.

20. Michigan Wolverines

Not too much to read into so far; we’re only one meet in, and it was an outdoor long course invitational. The Wolverines bring back almost all of their key personnel from one of their best team runs in years last season.

19. UCLA Bruins

We never like to read too much into the SMU Classic, where the Bruins tied the next team on our list for second place. Teams have a tendency to get up and swim abnormally fast at that meet. Still, it’s hard to ignore Linnea Mack dropping a 52.9 100 back and freshman Caroline McTaggart putting up a 48.6 100 free.

18. Missouri Tigers

Missouri gets the nod over UCLA with more returning NCAA scoring talent. Dani Barbiera is a big loss, but the other three legs of their fourth place NCAA 400 medley relay (Hannah Stevens, Abby Duncan, and Anna Patterson) are all off to great starts.

17. North Carolina Tarheels

The Tar Heel women had a tough NCAA Championship meet last year, but with a young nucleus and a hot start to the fall recruiting season, the program is on their way back up toward the top 15.

16. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Minnesota has had two nail-biters to open the season, with a tie against Florida and a two-point loss to rival Wisconsin. Plenty of talent on this squad, but Kierra Smith (redshirt) was missed in both meets.

15. Florida Gators

Don’t be shocked to see Florida this low early on; it’s that time of year for the Gators. They’ll rise up soon enough. That being said, there were a number of red flags in their meets against Indiana (loss), Texas (loss), and Minnesota (tie).

14. Wisconsin Badgers

Chase Kinney has stepped up to fill in for the graduation of Ivy Martin, including 22.0 and 48.6 splits against Minnesota in the Badgers’ season-opening win.

13. Indiana Hoosiers

The Hoosiers are without Brooklynn Snodgrass (redshirting), but they do finally have breaststrokers, thanks to freshmen Lilly King and Miranda Tucker.

12. Arizona Wildcats

The Wildcats haven’t competed yet this season; we’ll see their top-flight freshmen class for the first time this weekend against UNLV and Washington State.

11. Auburn Tigers

They’ve only had one meet, but it may be the best early-season Auburn has looked in years. The Tigers drubbed rival Alabama, with strong performances by freshmen Bailey Nero and Aly Tetzloff.

10. USC Trojans

No Kendyl Stewart hurts, and it showed against NC State; the Wolfpack won the 100 and 200 backstrokes, and also went 1-2 in the 100 fly (Stewart’s NCAA lineup last March). On a brighter note, transfer star Anika Apostalon is fairing well in her first semester.

9. Tennessee Volunteers

Last weekend was mixed bag for the Volunteers. They looked great against Missouri, only to turn around and get knocked out cold by Virginia. Of course, less than 24 hours between meets and having to fly from Columbia to Charlottesville may have played a role in that result.

8. NC State Wolfpack

NC State surprised a number of swim fans last weekend, flying to Los Angeles and downing the Trojans in their home pool by a substantial margin. Alexia Zevnik and Riki Bonnema led the way, as the Wolfpack won 7 of 8 swimming events to open the meet, and captured all four relay titles on the weekend.

7. Texas A&M Aggies

Big jump from #8 to #7. The Aggies had some big losses coming into the year, but there are still NCAA scorers abound on the roster. Their first big test of the year is in two weeks against arch-rival Texas.

6. Texas Longhorns

The Texas women (as well as the men) are known for going toe-to-toe against high-caliber regular season competition. They took on Indiana and Florida last weekend, dismantling both in their home pool. This is another freshmen class we need to keep our eyes on.

5. Virginia Cavaliers

Their top 5 is as good as anyone else’s in the country, but the Cavaliers are starting to show more depth. Virginia took the first six events in their dominant win over Tennessee, highlighted by a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200 free that included three swimmers (CeCe Williams, Eryn Eddy, Megan Moroney) under 1:49.

4. Louisville Cardinals

Louisville isn’t slowing down after last season’s program-best 6th place NCAA finish. Andee Cottrell has put up some eye-popping breaststroke times, including a 2:08.6 200 in the Cardinals’ SMU Classic victory.

3. Georgia Bulldogs

Their win against North Carolina was a breeze, but it showed the lack of sprint depth without Chantal van Landeghem, as well as the Bulldogs’ massive void in the breaststroke events. However, there’s too much talent on this team to (probably) ever fall below third on this list.

2. Stanford Cardinal

The Cardinal have six returning NCAA champions on the roster (two of whom have individual titles), and freshman IM star Ella Eastin is fitting right into the mix without issue.

1. California Golden Bears

Our preseason favorite to run the table. The breaststroke problem persists, but the Bears have been on point through their first two wins. Elizabeth Pelton is back in action, and the freshmen class is leading the way.

For what it's worth Simone Manuel was in civilian clothes at the Stanford v Utah meet and did not swim. Something definitely going on.

Well this very question is being asked in the comments section of the Swimswam article "2015-16 Women's NCAA Power Rankings". According to Swimswam: "we've reached out to the Stanford athletics department about Manuel's status, but have not heard definitive word back yet." & "NCAA scholarship rules allow them to save a scholarship by having swimmers sit out the fall semester."

Latter comment re Manuel sitting out this quarter seems a likely scenario perhaps, as Simone's already listed on Team USA's roster for the Duel In The Pool event v. Europe in mid Dec, so I'd imagine that rather than being injured, she's presently training hard, confident of her preparations and readiness to represent the country in a month & a half's time. Hmmm, may also partly explain how Greg was able to finagle scooping up so many top-ranked recruits for the class of 2016.

Question therefore for BD & anyone who knows a bit about the scholly side of things - how would sitting out a quarter or two impact the scholarship situation? If this is indeed true, would NCAA rules allow Simone to train with her teammates or even her coach, and in the Furd pool & using facilities on the farm? How about taking classes?

Neither the Manuel thing or the 'SC gray shirt thing make any sense. Morgan Priestly, the guy who wrote the SwimSwam article, swam on the farm (his bro swam and played in the Rose Bowl) and no doubt knows exactly what's going on with Manuel. Complete BS that they're waiting for word from the AD. Suspect it's an academic eligibility issue, since there are minimal Olympic benefits from redshirting for only Fall. It's not like she needs Olympic Trials cuts. She can also qualify for NCAAs via LCMs this season. Additionally can take off Soring quarter to train for the Olympics with no effect on completed units issues.

Still don't get the gray shirt angle in swimming, but kinda looks like that's what's going on with Mike Thomas right now.

Without Manuel, furdettes would have only one great sprinter, Lia Neal. She's the only one who could make any of the three freestyle relays for the 2016 Bears. Reasonable chance Bears would beat them in all five relays at NCAAs.

Downside is that Ledecky and Manuel would swim together for 3 years rather than 2 years on the farm. Manuel's eligibility would expire in 2019 and Ledecky probably goes pro then to monetize her swimming in front of the Worlds. Ledecky, Manuel, and Neal will only swim together in 2017. Drabot will help them on the 800 Free relay, but Bears (Farida, Hull, Amy, McL, Baker, Abbey) will own them in the 200 and 400 Free relays. Don't understand why they didn't go after Liu hard since they'll still be relatively weak in pure sprinters.

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Simone Manuel will redshirt the 2015-16 season, as announced Thursday by women's swimming head coach Greg Meehan.

A seven-time All-American and four-time national champion as a freshman, Manuel is in the process of training for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Manuel will continue to attend classes and participate in team training and activities.

"After careful thought and discussion with my coaches, I have decided to redshirt and shift my focus to long-course training and competition for the upcoming year," said Manuel, who was also named a Scholar All-America first team selection last season. "I am still training with Stanford University and will continue my journey academically. I am fortunate and grateful to be a part of the Stanford family, as we share and support each other on our journeys."

"This is a great decision for Simone," said Meehan, who guided Stanford to a third-place finish at NCAA Championships in 2015. "Continuing her academics, training and social life here at Stanford allows for consistency over the next eight-plus months leading up to the Olympic Trials. Simone will still benefit from training in the team environment and our program will certainly benefit from her presence. Our lineup looks slightly different without Simone and sophomore All-American diver Kassidy Cook (also redshirting the 2015-16 season), but I'm excited about the opportunities for our team. So far, I've been really impressed with how they are taking advantage of these opportunities."

Simone Manuel, the defending NCAA Champion in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles (including the fastest swimmer in history in the latter of those races) has decided to sit out the 2015-2016 NCAA season.

Manuel was ominously absent from the team's first two meets, resounding in-conference wins over Washington State and Utah, leading to speculation that she might choose to sit out the season in preparation for the 2016 Olympic Trials.

The news was confirmed today by Stanford head coach Greg Meehan. This makes her the third favorite for an NCAA Champion who won't race this season for the Cardinal World Record holder Katie Ledecky already announced that she was deferring her senior year at Stanford to remain on the east coast and prepare for the Olympics with Bruce Gemmell; and diver Kassidy Cook has decided the same (2nd in the 1-meter at NCAA's last year).

The result will be an uphill battle for the Cardinal toward a possible 2016 title though defending champions Cal lost two of the very small handful of counter-punches to Manuel, after Abbey Weitzeil deferred her freshman year and Missy Franklin turned pro following two years of college swimming.

As valuable as Manuel is for Stanford, she could be equally as important to Team USA's success in long course at the Olympic Games. She finished the summer tied for 10th in the world in the 100 meter free (53.81), which made her the second-fastest American behind the aforementioned Franklin.

Wow!

I would recommend if she and Ledecky are successful in the Olympic as I expect, there would be no better time for them to go Pro. That would probably be their peak earning years for sponsors. Take it from someone looking out for their best interest

LSJU will really be hurting in the relays without Manuel. She was their anchor on four relays, a job that will now fall to Lia Neal. Not sure who anchors one of the medley relays since Neal won't give up an individual event for a fifth relay. Probably Engel, since Hu (fly) and Howe (back) are needed elsewhere on the medley.

Furdettes obviously have talent, but they won't have enough depth until 2017. Bears have an excellent chance to repeat in 2016. 2017 looks dicey for a three peat since LSJU will be loaded.

Are you saying that we (Cal) are the favorites to repeat even without Cierra?
