'SC recruiting should be interesting to follow. Way too many doping problems and allegations directly and indirectly associated with the Trojan Swim Club: Efinova, Morozov, Hardy, Hosszu, Glaesner, Pinzon, Mellouli, and Lobinsev.

Yeah, the stanford coaches/recruiters would have a 20 minute drive rather than an hour drive, but it sounds like the santa clara complex is going to draw swimmers from all over
a lot of swimming talent will compete there giving Cal (and Stanford) an easy drive to go see
sounds like it will still be a long time before it's built

BearDevil, if Penny becomes the Prime Minister of Canada, does that ruin her NCAA eligibility, and thus she will not be able to swim for Cal? :p

For those of you who may be experiencing withdrawal symptoms in the post-Rio lull before the 2016-2017 NCAA season gets going in earnest, there's always the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships to look forward to for a quick swimming fix. Wed 24 Aug thru Sat 27 Aug at the Kihei Aquatic Center in Maui, Hawaii. Prelims @ 12 noon PT, Finals 8 pm PT.

May be worthwhile keeping an eye on the long course performance progression of many of the 2016/2017/2018 recruits who have been the topic of discussion here, on both the women & men's side. Of note will be the participation of 2017 Cal commit Ryan Hoffer in the competition, and the presence of Caitlin Leverenz (also Matt Grevers) as a mentor - hope they will both do their part in wooing a number of these potential future stars to the blue & gold! Maggie, Brooke & Cassidy named as team captains. Hoffer & Grieshop on the men/boys' side.

With regards to the 2018 incoming freshman class, hope Teri has pointed out Cassidy Bayer, Eva Merrell, Lucie Nordmann, Grace Ariola, Anya Goeders (& others) to Caitlin as potential baby :bear:s to keep an eye on during this trip. Also Alex Walsh who can perhaps help to recruit Aussie Jr WR holder Minna Atherton (most unlikely dream of mine, but heck, you never know!)

This photo where Marta has her arm around Caitlin does get my hopes high re the sprint prospect's chances of coming here - tho Marta's other arm round Erin could be setting up a classic & hotly-contested Bear v. Furd tug o' war over this particular recruit lol (but do note Ciesla's telling lean towards Leverenz here haha) ... Cassidy on Caitlin's other side could be a promising sign too, even if BearDevil's 99% convinced that she's a shoo-in for future furdette status :p

Thought Mags had dropped the 100 breast to focus on her 400 IM race tonight? Margaret did bust out a nice 4:44.26 for 4th in the 400 IM A final btw, and a new PB (Aroesty's old record = 4:47.89)

Actually I've been most impressed by Isabel Ivey who's really on fire @ this meet, and dropping time like crazy!

The promising 2019 recruit won the 100 free in 54.95 (old PB = 55.71), only swimmer in the entire field to dip below the 55 sec barrier ... as a matter of fact, that time would have tied her with Allison Schmitt in prelims of Olympic Trials to advance onto semis @ Omaha! For reference, 100m free times for the other American qualifiers in this evening's finals: Grace Ariola - 55.93, Lauren Pitzer - 56.18, Anya Goeders - 56.32

Isabel was also the fastest American in the 200 free A final yesterday, dropping over a second from her pre-Jr Pan Pacs PB to come in 3rd in 1:58.94. Actually would have ranked 9th at OT morning heats in this event with that time - faster than Gibson/Manuel/Drabot/Bispo/Chenault and even (a still-recovering) Katie McL's prelims swims at trials!

Did a 100/200 free double to boot in this session, having just anchored Team USA's W 4x200 free relay team to victory over the Aussies!

W 4x200 free relay Champions! L to R: Lauren Pitzer, Courtney Harnish, Brooke Forde, Isabel Ivey

Below is a shot of Caitlin helping Isabel with her USA swim cap from yesterday - and hopefully recruiting her at the same time... *winks*

btw Allie Raab will probably end up swimming down at the Farm or for UGA - her parents had met at LSJU and mum swam for them (thanks for that tidbit, BearDevil, hope I didn't butcher the details lol), whilst sissy Meaghan is a Dawg...

UAC, I have also been very impressed with Isabel Ivey. Do you know what class she is in? College swimming doesn't have her listed. Another swimmer who isn't listed on College swimming's recruiting lists is Alex Walsh. What class is she? Alex is interesting in that she swims both the backstroke and breaststroke.

To answer my own questions, Isabel Ivey 2018 and Alex Walsh 2019.

2018 is going to be so deep that I hope we save some room for next years efforts.

tedbear - do believe both are in the freshman class of 2019 (Isabel may be 2018, not sure) - so perhaps a bit too early to pin superstar status on them at this early stage, as much can change within the next 2-3 years!

Isabel swims with the Gator Swim Club in Florida, I believe. Only potential hiccup for us is that Ivey seems to be a bit of a Ledecky admirer (but then, who isn't these days?!) - unfortunately the Ledecky factor will play quite a role in influencing a whole generation of promising swimmers to harbour dreams of becoming a furdette ... to be fair, these things come in cycles, as I wasn't exactly complaining when Missy was the draw for Cal (and Natalie before her)... :p

Alex Walsh (Nashville Aquatic Club)'s particular versatility is a bit unusual, she has been hailed as the future backstroke hope of America but that may be taking it a mite too far, will have to see how the older Walsh sister develops in her strokes meanwhile. As mentioned previously, Alexandra is Team Missy from all indications...

Lucie's 2:09.59 edged out Sayaka Akase (JPN)'s former Jr Pan Pacs record (2:09.68, from 2010) in the 200m Back in this morning's heats, though it wasn't quite a PB for her (2:09.40). Everyone seemed to have taken it relatively easy, as Minna (AUS) swam almost three & a half seconds slower to take the 3rd seeded spot @ 2:13.01.

Let's see if Nordmann can bring her time further down tonight, which she'll need to do in order to seal the win if Atherton should come anywhere near her 2:08.00 entry time! Furdette Erin Voss is also into the A final, whilst Alex Walsh leads the B final seeding, followed a few spots down by Madison Homovich (who will also contest the B final in the 400m Free) for Team USA.

Eva Merrell & Cassidy Bayer under the minute mark to advance both of them into the 100m Fly A final. Ruby Martin & Isabel Ivey in the B (only 2 entrants per country in each heat rule). They should all go faster tonight.

Michael Taylor & Austin Katz will lead the field in the Men's 200m Back tonight. Baby :bear: Andy Song (MEX) also made it into the A final.

2017 commit Ryan Hoffer will be the top seed in the B final of the 100m Fly.

Ivey's 55.01 was the fastest split from a flying start in the entire A & B field (Rebecca Smith did lead Team Canada off in a strong 55.41), snatching the victory in the last 10 metres or so! What impresses me so much is how Izzy overcomes her disadvantage in height to most of her sprint competition, with good stroke technique and/or feel for the water.

Also noticed Lucie's strong underwaters & turns in the 200m Back tonight...these skills will definitely be an asset when it comes to the little pool (i.e. NCAAs)!

W 200m IM: Alex Walsh seeded 2nd, her versatility on both back & breast conveying a nice advantage in the middle legs. Magaret Aroesty made sweet use of her breaststroke superiority to reel in the leaders during her specialty leg @ prelims, and will join Alex in the A final. Brooke Ford & Isabel Ivey pushed down to the B final

W 200m Breast: Mags will also contest the B final. Zoe Bartel & Allie Raab dropped considerable time from their entries, so will be USA's 1-2 punch as the top seeds in the A final. Kelsey Wog (CAN) will be dangerous though...

W 50m Free: Anya Goeders & Marta Ciesla positioned in the #1 & #3 qualifying spots, with Canada's Rebecca Smith lurking right behind them. Isabel Ivey only 0.01 sec slower than Smith's time, but the 2-per-nation rule bumps the promising recruit down to the B final, where she will be the top seed followed closely by teammate Casey Fanz.
Isabel ambitiously attempting a trio of events tonight - 200 IM, 50 Free, and will probably be the anchor (freestyle) on the W 4x100 Medley relay team this evening.
W 200m IM

Alex Walsh 2nd in the A final. Her 2:13.14 PB ranks her as #9 all-time in her age group!

Margaret Aroesty close behind to take 3rd in 2:13.23. As expected, dominated the breast portion of the event, more than 2 sec under the next quickest split of that leg.

Mary-Sophie Harvey (CAN) took over the race in the free leg with the fastest last split of everyone, won with her 2:12.39.

------

W 50m Free

Massive winning PB for Anya Goeders as she dips below 25 sec for the very first time, approaching the Jr WR! Seemed shocked by her time at the end of the race, esp considering this pool isn't very fast. Anya's 24.85 would have placed her 6th in finals at US Olympic Trials btw, ahead of Dana, Lia Neal & Amanda Weir!!

Also the 2nd fastest ever in her age group for this event, behind only Simone's 24.80 NAG record.

Marta Ciesla takes 2nd, in 25.18.

Isabel Ivey's winning time in the B final also good for a PB, in fact that represents the 3rd fastest overall time for both heats of finals (just 0.03 sec slower than Marta's time).

------

W 200m Breast

Zoe Bartel gets it done in a new Jr Pan Pacs record, only swimmer with a 2:25! Kelsey Wog (CAN) over a sec back, whilst Allie Raab claims the 3rd spot.

Margaret Aroesty 2nd in the B final, behind winner Brooke Forde.

------

W 4x100m Medley relay

Once again, Isabel Ivey impresses by coming thru in her 3rd anchor role at this meet, delivering a come-from-behind relay win for Team USA, with Lucie Nordmann, Zoe Bartel & Eva Merrell on board, their 4:02.82 trumping the former Jr Pan Pac record of 4:03.44, set in 2014 by none other than our very own Amy (with help from Lilly, Kuks & Drabot).

Izzy with the only sub 55-sec (54.74). That with a very slow (or safe ) reaction time of 0.62 for a relay ... for example, consider the advantage which Sarah Darcel's -0.01 RT gave Team Canada on their anchor leg ...

The four most impressive swimmers from the just completed Junior Worlds.
1. Isabel Ivey
2. Lucie Nordmann
3. Eva Merrell
4. Zoe Bartel
All of these women are 2018 recruits. UAC, you can double check, but Ivey was born in 2000, which, unless she was born really late in the year, makes her a 2018 recruit.

Swimmer with the brightest future, Alex Walsh 2019.
Walsh has the unusual combination of great backstroker and good breaststroker, which makes her perfect for the IM.

Four Canadians to keep an eye on.

2. Sarah Darcel

Remember that Keaton and many other class of 2016'ers committed early last year, but I feel like (perhaps due to commotion of Trials and Games this summer) that's not the situation this year.

Quick answer here ... hopefully the regulars who have been around the board much longer would care to chime in with more specific & accurate details?

September seems to be a popular timeframe for most collegiate swim programmes - 12 Sept @ the SDSU game for our baby :bear: prospects last year.
LSJU a bit later cos of their wacky quarter-system, believe Meehan held his on 3 Oct 2015.

At a very rough guess, reckon Teri & the team will likely host the main bulk of 2017 recruits the weekend of the 17th, during the big home opener v. the Horns. Then possibly one or more lower-profile ones the next few weekends depending on feedback from the first batch of prospects.

HB, the first contact period starts on July 1st. That's the day when all the coaches call their most desired recruits. Our big recruiting weekend is usually the first home football game of the year, and most commitments come in late September and October, before the signing day in November. Some recruits know where they want to go from a early time and commit way before even the first contact period. Examples of this are Ledecky two years ago, and last year, Moseley who went to U$C. Of course there are always late signees, especially internationals in the Spring.

So, if I may briefly return to the original topic re 2017 recruits (even if the 2018 & 2019 classes do appear quite bit more exciting lol), thought the following article may be of some interest ... the main group of prospective 2017 :bear:s should be making their official rounds soon, including a campus visit to Berkeley in approx. a fortnight & a half's time:

Both Bear swim teams are locked into duopolies with schools (TX-men, LSJU-women) that have much more in common with Cal than some are comfortable and/or unwilling to admit.

UT may not be an academic super power, but it's a very good school, an athletic super power, and one of the best college towns in America. Perfectly reasonable to root against the 'Whorns, but they'd fit in better in the current PAC than all other non-CA current members. Durden's team's loaded, but unfortunately UT's the only team that can beat them at NCAAs. Kudos to anyone who uses their athletic ability to be admitted to an Ivy or LSJU, but those schools aren't destinations for serious swimmers anymore. David Nolan's a great guy, swimmer, and student, but squandered his athletic talent on the farm. Nowhere near Adrian or Shields and Nolan's athletic/academic peers Murphy and Seliskar wisely chose Cal. Status quo is perfectly fine at LSJU since they're no longer a Cal threat in conference, at NCAAs, or internationally. Replace Knapp with Meehan, Yuri, or Marsh and that equation changes.

LSJU women's team was in the exact same position four years ago. Under a competent coach, DiRado & Felicia Lee would have been 2012 Olympians and Missy might have seriously considered LSJU. Wisely poached Durden protege Meehan, who's built a monster team. Georgia's on the way down, LSJU's on the way up, and Bears are hanging tough.

Georgia, Florida, A&M, Arizona, and Tennessee churn out great swimmers, but can't compete with Cal and LSJU as academic/athletic combos. UVa, Texas, 'SC, Michigan, UCLA, and Wisconsin have potential, but can never get over the hump.

Silly for any partisans on either side of the Bay to pretend Missy, Ledecky, Natalie, Manuel, Vollmer, DiRado, Baker, or Lia would have only thrived at one school, but not the other.

Teri's hole's a little deeper than Durden's because of gaps in breast and distance. New facility will finally get Bears into the game for divers.

Lots of pressure on Teri and Durden since the expectations are NCAA team or individual titles or Olympic medals. Throw in academic excellence (Adrian, Natalie, Murphy, Missy, Prenot, Amy, Seliskar, and Acker) and there's an extremely narrow window of must get recruits every year. No need to stress over "losing" recruits who prefer the SEC or Ivies. Athletic, academic, and cultural fit matter. Does anybody think UW stakeholders are pining away for the next Hope Solo today?

Alright, official campus visits are underway now that September's upon us, so we should have a better picture of who's being recruited by whom in the following few weeks.

Kicking off things @ Neyland Stadium, here are some of the visitors checking out the Tenn Vols over the holiday weekend:

Will admit to my utter incompetency when it comes to properly ID'ing swimmers out of their racing suits lol ... but looks like Dutch Olympian Kira Toussaint's chaperoning the following 2017 recruits, with help from freshmen Spence Atkins & Annie Waldum (current rankings taken from CollegeSwimming):
Haley Yelle (#7 TX, #45 in the nation)
Bailey Grinter (#4 IL, #84 Nat)
Emma Layton (#8 GA, #111 Nat)
Megan Sichterman (#6 OH, #134 Nat)
Lauren Savoy (#20 TX, #200 Nat)
Of most interest to :bear: is the presence of Nikol Popov (#1 CA, #8 Nat) in the above group shot ... hopefully we'll catch a glimpse of this studly in-state breaststroker prospect @ Memorial Stadium in a couple of weeks' time!

However, I'm not assuming by any means that it's close to a done deal for Popov donning the blue & gold colours - or that Teri's even wooing her! (esp after my completely out-of-synch-with-reality expectations last season that McKeever would recruit Claire Adams lol)... At any rate, Nikol will definitely be vigourously pursued by the top programmes.

UT Swimming here is helmed by Matt Kredich who has already established a frugal-in-numbers but strong cadre of freshies in Meghan Small (#1 recruit from the 2016 class who visited Cal last Sept), Erika Brown, Atkins, Madison Graham & Tessa Cieplucha - after all, the Volunteers were ranked #6 by Swimswam for that class!

As a reminder, here's a bit of info + stats on Nikol from earlier posts in this thread:

Ever since Caitlyn Leverenz graduated, breast stroke has been a gaping weakness for our team. I remember when Marina first signed, we thought all of our worries would disappear. Although she is the best we have, Marina hasn't quite lived up to our lofty expectations. In my opinion, we not only need one sprint breaststroker, but it would also be nice to have depth at the position, and get a second breast sprinter. What I am leading to is that I want both, of what should be our top two recruits for the class of 2017.

The Breaststrokers

1A. Nicole Popov; Santa Clarita, California - Nikol is a current teammate of uber sprinting stud Abbey Weitzeil, so we already have a little bit of an inside track on recruiting her. Her top times are 59.64 in the 100Y Breast and 2:08.92 in the 200Y Breast. Wouldn't it be nice to have a sub minute breaststroker? Nikol also happens to be a solid 200IMer with a best time of 1:58.78, which addresses some of our big IM need.

my 2017 preferences would be: Popov (in state, keep her away from 'Zona or 'SC), Pitzer (100-200 strength, keep her from A&M and UT), CH (200 IM, 200 Free, 1650 Free, keep her from Georgia), Sierra (500/400 IM/1650, keep her from Georgia), and Ault (500/400 IM/1650). Way too much distance, but LSJU kills the Bears in 200/500/1650 and 800 with Ledecky, Byrnes, Stevens, Voss. Poppe's regressed and may retire and Eastin probably doesn't swim 100 Breast. Can see tedbear's double breast angle, but CH and Sierra are more versatile than Popov and Maggie.

California's Nikol Popov is actually a better all-around breaststroker than Aroesty, with an NCAA scoring-level 100 and a 200 that would have missed scoring by just .01 last year. Popov is a little less valuable in the IMs, though, and it's relay value that currently gives Aroesty the edge. But Popov could very easily join Aroesty under 59 during her senior season and is a clear-cut blue chip prospect in this class.

A potentially intriguing development is Hungarian flier & former multiple Jr WR holder Lilina Szilgyi's Knoxville visit (seen here with Toussaint @ Uni of TN Aquatic Centre yesterday):

What could be telling that this may not be just a casual visit w/an old friend, is Lilina tagging her post "#fUTureVols"... wow, would be a major, major catch by Kredich & the Vols if Szilgyi is indeed considering coming on board over there!

In other news/gossip :p, there are some indirect indications that sprinter Ashley Volpenhein (#1 OH, #18 Nat) may be visiting UVa this weekend... Board discussion/blurb on Ashley quoted below:

2. Ashley Volpenhein; Mason, Ohio - Ashley is an outstanding student, and is also a top target of the Furd. Her times are 50 Free (22.35), 100 Free (48.96), and 200 Free (1:49.39). Ashley has been to our campus unofficially, but like I said before, she is also a target of the Furd.

Hard to rank the class's premier sprinter this low. But it's a deep class of swimmers who can already score at NCAAs, and Volpenhein isn't quite there yet.
