'SC recruiting should be interesting to follow. Way too many doping problems and allegations directly and indirectly associated with the Trojan Swim Club: Efinova, Morozov, Hardy, Hosszu, Glaesner, Pinzon, Mellouli, and Lobinsev.

Pat Forde's column on Missy. If Brooke were interested in Cal, he would have been complimentary or at least neutral on Teri and/or Cal.

LSJU's going after Maggie hard. Forde's dad Pat dissed Teri and Cal in a recent column. Incoming furdette Voss will be working them hard.

Isabel swims with the Gator Swim Club in Florida, I believe. Only potential hiccup for us is that Ivey seems to be a bit of a Ledecky admirer (but then, who isn't these days?!) - unfortunately the Ledecky factor will play quite a role in influencing a whole generation of promising swimmers to harbour dreams of becoming a furdette ... to be fair, these things come in cycles, as I wasn't exactly complaining when Missy was the draw for Cal (and Natalie before her)... :p

Lucie Nordmann is another 2018 recruit (backstroker) to keep an eye on. She almost beat Junior World Record holder Minna Atherton at the Junior Worlds. The Class of 2018 is loaded with superstar talent.
USA B team comprising of Alex Walsh/Allie Raab/Cassidy Bayer/Grace Ariola won their heat easily in 4:05.98, a time which was faster than the 3rd placed Aussies in the A final (4:06.70)!UrsusArctosCalifornicus;842718650 said:
What impresses me so much is how Izzy overcomes her disadvantage in height to most of her sprint competition, with good stroke technique and/or feel for the water.

The four most impressive swimmers from the just completed Junior Worlds.
1. Isabel Ivey
2. Lucie Nordmann
3. Eva Merrell
4. Zoe Bartel
All of these women are 2018 recruits. UAC, you can double check, but Ivey was born in 2000, which, unless she was born really late in the year, makes her a 2018 recruit.
Swimmer with the brightest future, Alex Walsh 2019.
Walsh has the unusual combination of great backstroker and good breaststroker, which makes her perfect for the IM.

Also, not to sound like a complete newcomer to the game, but what/which weekend(s) exactly are the "prime" ones on which coaches lure recruits? Wasn't sure if most schools/teams follow about the same timelines every year or not. Remember that Keaton and many other class of 2016'ers committed early last year, but I feel like (perhaps due to commotion of Trials and Games this summer) that's not the situation this year.
UrsusArctosCalifornicus;842714011 said:
Quick answer here ... hopefully the regulars who have been around the board much longer would care to chime in with more specific & accurate details?
September seems to be a popular timeframe for most collegiate swim programmes - 12 Sept @ the SDSU game for our baby :bear: prospects last year.
LSJU a bit later cos of their wacky quarter-system, believe Meehan held his on 3 Oct 2015.
At a very rough guess, reckon Teri & the team will likely host the main bulk of 2017 recruits the weekend of the 17th, during the big home opener v. the Horns. Then possibly one or more lower-profile ones the next few weekends depending on feedback from the first batch of prospects.
tedbear;842714010 said:
HB, the first contact period starts on July 1st. That's the day when all the coaches call their most desired recruits. Our big recruiting weekend is usually the first home football game of the year, and most commitments come in late September and October, before the signing day in November. Some recruits know where they want to go from a early time and commit way before even the first contact period. Examples of this are Ledecky two years ago, and last year, Moseley who went to U$C. Of course there are always late signees, especially internationals in the Spring.
BearDevil;842714018 said:
Both Bear swim teams are locked into duopolies with schools (TX-men, LSJU-women) that have much more in common with Cal than some are comfortable and/or unwilling to admit.
UT may not be an academic super power, but it's a very good school, an athletic super power, and one of the best college towns in America. Perfectly reasonable to root against the 'Whorns, but they'd fit in better in the current PAC than all other non-CA current members. Durden's team's loaded, but unfortunately UT's the only team that can beat them at NCAAs. Kudos to anyone who uses their athletic ability to be admitted to an Ivy or LSJU, but those schools aren't destinations for serious swimmers anymore. David Nolan's a great guy, swimmer, and student, but squandered his athletic talent on the farm. Nowhere near Adrian or Shields and Nolan's athletic/academic peers Murphy and Seliskar wisely chose Cal. Status quo is perfectly fine at LSJU since they're no longer a Cal threat in conference, at NCAAs, or internationally. Replace Knapp with Meehan, Yuri, or Marsh and that equation changes.
LSJU women's team was in the exact same position four years ago. Under a competent coach, DiRado & Felicia Lee would have been 2012 Olympians and Missy might have seriously considered LSJU. Wisely poached Durden protege Meehan, who's built a monster team. Georgia's on the way down, LSJU's on the way up, and Bears are hanging tough.
Georgia, Florida, A&M, Arizona, and Tennessee churn out great swimmers, but can't compete with Cal and LSJU as academic/athletic combos. UVa, Texas, 'SC, Michigan, UCLA, and Wisconsin have potential, but can never get over the hump.
Silly for any partisans on either side of the Bay to pretend Missy, Ledecky, Natalie, Manuel, Vollmer, DiRado, Baker, or Lia would have only thrived at one school, but not the other.
Teri's hole's a little deeper than Durden's because of gaps in breast and distance. New facility will finally get Bears into the game for divers.
Lots of pressure on Teri and Durden since the expectations are NCAA team or individual titles or Olympic medals. Throw in academic excellence (Adrian, Natalie, Murphy, Missy, Prenot, Amy, Seliskar, and Acker) and there's an extremely narrow window of must get recruits every year. No need to stress over "losing" recruits who prefer the SEC or Ivies. Athletic, academic, and cultural fit matter. Does anybody think UW stakeholders are pining away for the next Hope Solo today?

Ever since Caitlyn Leverenz graduated, breast stroke has been a gaping weakness for our team. I remember when Marina first signed, we thought all of our worries would disappear. Although she is the best we have, Marina hasn't quite lived up to our lofty expectations. In my opinion, we not only need one sprint breaststroker, but it would also be nice to have depth at the position, and get a second breast sprinter. What I am leading to is that I want both, of what should be our top two recruits for the class of 2017.
The Breaststrokers
1A. Nicole Popov; Santa Clarita, California - Nikol is a current teammate of uber sprinting stud Abbey Weitzeil, so we already have a little bit of an inside track on recruiting her. Her top times are 59.64 in the 100Y Breast and 2:08.92 in the 200Y Breast. Wouldn't it be nice to have a sub minute breaststroker? Nikol also happens to be a solid 200IMer with a best time of 1:58.78, which addresses some of our big IM need.
BearDevil;842669571 said:
my 2017 preferences would be: Popov (in state, keep her away from 'Zona or 'SC), Pitzer (100-200 strength, keep her from A&M and UT), CH (200 IM, 200 Free, 1650 Free, keep her from Georgia), Sierra (500/400 IM/1650, keep her from Georgia), and Ault (500/400 IM/1650). Way too much distance, but LSJU kills the Bears in 200/500/1650 and 800 with Ledecky, Byrnes, Stevens, Voss. Poppe's regressed and may retire and Eastin probably doesn't swim 100 Breast. Can see tedbear's double breast angle, but CH and Sierra are more versatile than Popov and Maggie.

California's Nikol Popov is actually a better all-around breaststroker than Aroesty, with an NCAA scoring-level 100 and a 200 that would have missed scoring by just .01 last year. Popov is a little less valuable in the IMs, though, and it's relay value that currently gives Aroesty the edge. But Popov could very easily join Aroesty under 59 during her senior season and is a clear-cut blue chip prospect in this class.

2. Ashley Volpenhein; Mason, Ohio - Ashley is an outstanding student, and is also a top target of the Furd. Her times are 50 Free (22.35), 100 Free (48.96), and 200 Free (1:49.39). Ashley has been to our campus unofficially, but like I said before, she is also a target of the Furd.

Hard to rank the class's premier sprinter this low. But it's a deep class of swimmers who can already score at NCAAs, and Volpenhein isn't quite there yet.
