[U]Mixed 4x50m Free Relay[/U] - Team USA subbed in Anthony Ervin (replacing Austin Katz) who promptly churned out the fastest flying split of the entire field, muscling the team into the lead which Kelsi maintained at the conclusion of the 3rd leg (ahead of eventual winners Australia by 0.24 sec at that point), but Anya jumped too early in her youthful exuberance/inexperience (RT of -0.09!) and so was slapped wth a DQ.

Of note was Rikako Ikee adding 2 more WJRs to her resume (5 thus far in just 2016!) - 2nd in both the [U]50m fly[/U] (25.73) & [U]100m IM[/U] (58.24). Perhaps Teri can put out feelers to the Japanese starlet (if she hasn't already done so ) with regards to the next recruiting cycle or two? :p

Atlanta, Georgia's Elizabeth Bailey has given a verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for the 2017-18 season.

Bailey is a senior at Marist School. She was runner-up in the 100 fly (54.43) and took third in the 200 IM (2:02.36) at the 2016 GHSA 1-5A State Swimming & Diving Meet. She also split a 24.30 butterfly in the 200 medley relay, and anchored the 400 free relay in 51.89.

Bailey swims year-round for Dynamo Swim Club. She competed in the 100m fly at 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, after having won the event at Nashville Sectionals. In addition, the versatile Bailey was an A-finalist in all the events she swam: 100/200m free, 100/200m fly, and 200/400m IM.

Her best SCY times are:

October's almost over, which means many of the United States' fastest high school seniors have committed to swim in college. Before we go over where everyone has ended up, we'll remind you of our parameters for making the top 20 list:

Our goal in these rankings is to reflect what college coaches look for in recruits, based on many years of conversations and coverage.

We focus only on American-based athletes, simply because there is so much uncertainty with international recruits if they'll come to the states, when they'll come to the states and with what graduating class they should be ranked. Projecting international recruits often becomes more a discussion of when they'll first join a college program and not which program they'll join.

A few other factors that weigh heavily in our rankings:

Sprints over distance Relay points count double in college swimming, and any program needs a strong stable of quality sprinters to fill out all 5 relays with studs. Obviously, a special distance swimmer can easily rank ahead of a very good 100 freestyler, but college swimming generally values a sprint freestyler over a distance swimmer, all other factors being equal.

Improvements Actual times are a the trump card, but any big improvements in quality can make a difference as well. For example, a swimmer who only took up year-round swimming as a junior in high school going the same time as a swimmer whose been swimming year-round since they were 8 will probably get the edge in our rankings. Think Breeja Larson.

Short Course over Long Course we recognize that some programs, many programs, put their focus with their high school aged swimmers on long course, especially depending on when the high school championships may fall. That said, college swimming is short course, so a swimmer who is great in short course but struggles in long course will have the advantage over the reverse.

NCAA scoring ability NCAAs are the big show for college teams, so we've weighted NCAA scoring potential very highly. Swimmers who already have NCAA scoring times wind up mostly filling out the top our of rankings. Since college athletic directors and by extension coaches also place high value on conference championships, scoring ability at conference meets is also a factor in our rankings.

Relative depth in the NCAA and recruiting class a wealth of elite depth nationwide in one stroke discipline makes a big difference in what times are considered more valuable in that event. For example, the women's backstrokes have been loaded with stars in the NCAA the past few years. Though a 52-second backstroker is still valuable, that time won't get you near as far as it would have in years past. In the same vein, if a recruiting class is loaded with swimmers in the same event, they all are devalued a little, relatively speaking. This year's class of girls, for example, is thick with 22-mid sprinters and butterfliers, which makes swimmers in those events a little less valuable than an event like backstroke, where the recruiting class has less elite options to choose from.

Georgia and Michigan snagged the #1 and #2 recruits, respectively, but it was Stanford who has clearly landed an incoming class above the rest it's even scarier considering the kind of freshmen that the Cardinal they just brought in this season.

USC looks to have gotten the 2nd-best haul behind Stanford, led by #3 Margaret Aroesty. Her, Caitlin Tycz, and Marta Ciesla will likely combine for a formidable medley relay, and Aroesty's breaststroke potential is exciting for the Trojans.

Meanwhile, the only other teams besides Stanford and USC to snag more than 1 of our top 20 were Michigan and Texas A&M.

The Wolverines will re-stock their distance cupboards with the addition of Sierra Schmidt, while Alexis Margett addresses an area of the Michigan team that's just starting to get on its feet with freshman Vanessa Krause: butterfly. The Aggies load up with distance swimmers Joy Field and Taylor Pike, two studs who will help A&M in their recent battles for SEC dominance with the Georgia Bulldogs.

Yes, very mystifying. Between last year's top 20 signees, and this year's 19 of the top 20 committed recruits, Cal has only landed one. Given the strength of the program and upgrade in facilities, it doesn't make sense that Cal should be suffering a decline in recruiting.

Any truth to the notion that Cal is going all-in on next year's class? Given how this class is shaping up, does it appear as though Cal is "saving" scholarships? Does Cal offer one-year scholarships? Even Cal were swinging and missing on this year's recruits, one would have expected to see a much stronger group of official visitors.

Presently leads the nation in the 17-18 [U]400y IM[/U] category, her 4:16.75 thrown down on 15 Oct 2016 (presumably untapered) already less than a second away from her personal best of 4:15.90 done in Dec 2015! :beer:

For reference, Dannie's best time around this time of the season last year was a 4:20.83 (17 Oct 2015, same meet). So quite a promising improvement curve!



Prospective recruit Katie Glavinovich also on this list, in the [U]#10[/U] spot with her 4:25:53. KG's PB = 4:13.89 from March 2016.

The close bonds & relationships developed on these trips have historically had quite a significant impact on elite recruits with regards to their college choices.

Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou has announced via her Instagram account that she has made a verbal commitment to swim at the University of California, Berkeley beginning with the 2017-18 season. Krivokapic-Zhou is one of the leading backstrokers in the class of 2017; she competed at U.S. Olympic Trials in both the 100/200m back and the 100m fly.

Krivokapic-Zhou has spent her club career at Santa Clara Swim Club, and has competed over the last three high school seasons for Santa Clara High School. As a freshman she was runner-up in the 100 back and placed third in the 200 IM at the CIF-Central Coast Section Championships, losing to Stanford's Ally Howe in both instances. The following year she won the 100 back and was runner-up in the 100 fly, and last year she was runner-up in both events.

A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and National Select Camp graduate, Krivokapic-Zhou is a versatile talent who will fit in nicely with the Cal backstroke/butterfly group that includes Kathleen Baker, Amy Bilquist, Katie McLaughlin, Keaton Blovad, Aislinn Light, Jasmine Mau, and Courtney Mykkanen. Two weeks after breaking Dara Torres' national age group record in the 50 free with 22.32 at the New York High School Section 1 Girls' Championships, Kate Douglass was at it again. This time, the Pelham High School sophomore took another tenth off her time to lead the qualifiers with 22.21 in prelims of the women's 50 free at the 2016 NYSPHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Douglass has swum the event four times this fall, each time getting a little faster.

Douglass is now 15, so she didn't lower her 13-14 NAG record with the swim, but she did break both the New York Federation record and the New York State Public High School (NYSPHSAA) records. Moreoer, with each swim she is inching closer to the 21-second barrier and with 22.21, she ranks #6 on the all-time list for 15-16 girls, tied with Alexis Krogman. She bumps Anna McCraw, Maddy Schaefer, Lindsey Engel, Missy Franklin and Weitzeil, tied with 22.25, all down a spot. The 15-16 NAG record belongs to Simone Manuel; it stands at 22.04.

Day 2 of the New York Girl's State Championships saw sixteen automatic All-American swims and twenty-three All-American consideration swims, with standout performances from Katherine Douglass, Kristen Romano, and Lindsay Stone.

Pelham sophomore Katherine Douglass posted another automatic All-American time of 22.31 in the [U]50 yard freestyle[/U], just .1 seconds shy of her prelims time.

Katherine Douglass returned in the [U]100 yard freestyle[/U], chalking a new state record and automatic All-American time of 48.54 to claim first place.

The [U]200 yard freestyle relay[/U] featured an upset of first seed Pelham by the relay from Pittsford made up of Becca Evans, Emma Corby, Lindsay Stone, and Megan Deuel. Pelham was anchored by 50 yard freestyle champion Katherine Douglass, who put down a split 21.83 to nearly catch Pittsford on the last leg. Both relays made the cut for automatic All-American.

The [U]400 freestyle relay[/U] was a roller coaster as Pittsford and Long Beach battled on each leg. Long Beach started out ahead with Kristen Romano turning in a split of 49.47, but Pittsford quickly retook the lead. When Pittsford freshman Molly Brennan and Long Beach senior Margaret Areosty hit the water as the anchors, they were separated by almost two seconds. Areosty bested Brennan and a late challenge from Pelham's Katherine Douglass (48.17) by splitting a 49.80 to pull her team into first place. Just .58 of a second separated first place Long Beach from third place Pelham. All three teams made the automatic All-American cut.

Elise Garcia would in particular be likely a valuable get from a swimming perspective. Not too surprising that there's a great deal of interest in Elise down on the Farm (club = [U]SOCAL Aquatics[/U], so already good friends w/both Ella & Emily Eastin)...as well as from UCLA, seeing that she's a legacy there.

Elise's 22.64 PB in the [U]50 free[/U] would place her 5th fastest @ Cal by the time she graduates HS, with just Abbey, Amy, Maddie & Kathleen currently ahead of her in this event. That time would have earned the 41st spot @ last year's NCAA Championship prelims (out of the 65 qualifiers). Garcia had also placed 70th in the [U]50m free[/U] @ 2016 Olympic Trials.

Similarly with Elise's 53.25 in the [U]100 fly[/U] where she's currently surpassed only by Katie, Maddie, Kathleen & Abbey amongst our :bear:s. Would have made the 36th spot @ 2016 NCAAs out of 59 qualifiers. 76th @ the LCM version during Trials.

Would need some more development in her weaker 3rd event, the [U]100 free[/U]. Elise's 49.84 is just under this year's B cut, would have been good for 57th out of 67 qualifiers.

BERKELEY With a class comprised of seven swimmers and three divers, the California women's swimming & diving team signed 10 newcomers to National Letters of Intent Wednesday, giving the Golden Bears a big influx of talent for the 2017-18 season.

The list of recruits features several who participated in the U.S. Olympic Trials this past summer, in addition to a [U]2016 Olympian[/U] in Robin Neumann, who swam both the 200-meter freestyle and on the 800-meter free relay for the Netherlands in Rio.

"I think the biggest thing is that this a group of true student-athletes and women who really understand what Berkeley is about and what the swimming program is about," head coach Teri McKeever said. "They're looking for that level of world-class academics and athletics. We have some women who can help us in the breaststroke and IM, in particular, and I think some people who have a great upside in their performances."

Among the breaststrokers is Dannie Dilsaver of Lincoln, Neb., who is a five-time individual and six-time relay state champion and swam three events at the Olympic Trials. In addition, Ali Harrison (Ventura, Calif.), Alexa Skorus-Neely (Canyon Country, Calif.) and Natalie Tuck (Palo Alto, Calif.) all have seen success in the stroke. Harrison competed in the 100 breast at the Olympic Trials, with Skorus-Neely earning All-America honors in both the 100 breast and 200 IM, and Tuck specializing in the free, breast and IM and having swum in the FINA World Cup in Hong Kong this past month.

Two others to have competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials are Elizabeth Bailey of Atlanta, Ga., in the 100-meter butterfly and Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou (Santa Clara, Calif.), in both the backstroke and fly

All three divers hail from California in Jackie Im (San Diego), Kathleen Navas (San Jose) and Briana Thai (Alhambra) with each bringing competitive energy on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards and platform.

My suggestion, and some of you may have expressed this also, is that we should look at top foreign athletes (Australia, Europe and even Asia) to replace the cream of the crop American swimmers who always have us on their lists only to drop us for other Cal rivals. Yes, I know about our scholarship impediments, but somehow we need to make it work.

Obviously, we are not going to be a NC State foreign haven (or USC for that matter), but we need to see if we can entice a few foreign ace swimmers in case the 2018 class---Rucks et al rebuke us and we have to look who else is around late in the game. With a few top 10 foreign swimmers on the Women's roster, Cal should be a reasonable threat to the dynasty on the Farm.

Now, I have always loved our athletes at Cal and wouldn't trade them for anyone else because they want to BE at Cal.

Canadians, more specifically BC (Noemie, Bagshaw), fit best. Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, UK, Ireland, and South Africa all make sense.

Teri can still win NCAA titles with less than 18 (19 with two scoring divers) qualifiers but she needs high end talent if she's well below 19 scorers.

Foreign nationals aren't eligible for student loans, so can't miss on internationals who are at or near full rides. New PAC scholly rules mean $s can go up, but not down. Needs 4 or 5 potential scorers in every recruiting class.

Private schools have deeper financial aid pools, so Bears need to supplement high end national and international talent with in state talent and/or legacies.

Well, actually our 2017 sleeper recruit, Robin Neumann who's already an Olympian for the Netherlands, could turn out to be a really major coup for Teri & Ian!

Will definitely be a key & massive get if Robin's considerable LCM skills transition/translate well to the little pool. Sprint to mid-distance freestyle, with some backstroke chops in her history, very nice.

Not familiar with all her times & events, but I'd venture that Robin would fall in the [U]Top 10[/U] amongst all of next year's recruits if she had been ranked by SwimSwam...actually that's prob. understating things a mite, as Ms. Neumann may well represent the fastest [U]100/200 freestyler[/U] in the entire class of 2017



For your consideration, Robin had achieved a time of 1:59.23 in the [U]200m free[/U] prelims @ Rio...compare that with Camille's 1:59.71. Robin actually came in 2nd to Dutch ace Femke Heemskerk at the [U]2016 Eindhoven Swim Cup[/U] (Dutch Championships) back in April with a really fast 1:57.85, beating Marrit Steenbergen (another promising Dutch up & comer whom we've discussed here in the past) & Esmee Vermeulen in the process!!!

Now let's do a quickie comparison of Robin's [U]200 free[/U] with the Trojans' heralded sprint/back freshman stud, Louise Hansson from the Swedish National Team.

Louise arrived @ 'SC with a 1:58.45 in the [U]200m free[/U] long course, which roughly converts to 1:43.82 in short course yards. Louise has already gone 1:43.04 in the [U]200y free[/U] at the SMU Classic this season, which is currently the nation's leading time and would have come in 4th in this event at last year's National Championship A finals!

Robin's [U]200m free[/U] PB = 1:57.85 in LCM (I think) => 1:43.28 in SCY using SwimSwam's time conversion calculator, which is a 2017 NCAA "A" cut and would also have scored in the 4th spot @ 2016 NCAA! For reference, Katie McL has a 1:43.01 PB in the [U]200 free[/U], Abbey 1:43.25. Kathleen 1:43.61, and Amy 1:45.03 (though Bilquist did hammer home a 1:42.89 flying split anchoring our [U]800 free relay[/U] @ 2016 NCAAs).

Additionally Robin's [U]100m free[/U] PB of 55.02 => 48.12 in yards, which would have scored 3rd in the B finals @ 2016 NCAAs. Compare that with Abbey's 46.29, Amy's 48.02, Kathleen's 48.20, Maddie's 48.62, Katie's 48.69, and Val's 48.88 in this event. Farida can lay claim to a swift 47.20, but she'd have graduated by the time Robin comes into the team.

Obviously these time conversions, particularly when it comes to LCM <-> SCY, are quite dodgy and their accuracy a topic of much debate & contention. It'll have to be seen whether Teri & Ian can help develop Robin's underwaters & walls and parlay her LCM prowess into SCY studliness...but the exciting potential & upside is there in spades!
