My friends here in the Bay Area, who emigrated from Ukraine in the mid '90s, speak Russian. They were not anti-Soviet Union, because that was the system they grew up in and knew how to function in, but they identified as Ukrainians.

These situations are always nuanced. Anybody who thinks everything is black or white is mistaken. They only thing that's pretty much outside of the realm of debate is that Putin didn't have a good reason to invade Ukraine (except in his mind).

Just because you speak Russian doesn't mean you want to be a part of Russia. Plenty of people in California speak Spanish, very few want to join Mexico, Spain or another spanish speaking country. I was on a date with an Argentinean woman last weekend, she was telling me about growing up in Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, in both places, if you want a professional job (doctor, lawyer, etc.) you learned English. But again, knowing English doesn't mean you want to join the US or UK. I point that out because one of the high concentration of Russian speaking people appeared to be Kyiv, which obviously rather strongly displayed they did not want to be a part of Russia recently. After centuries of domination by Russia, it would make sense that speaking Russian became common place, but again. that does not mean they want to be apart of Russia.

Using an election map to show the country's divisions is not a good argument. Just because someone lost an election, doesn't mean you want to leave the country, or the country is doomed to be split apart. Someone can just as easily show a map of other countries and make the same claims.

You're also missing out the main aspect of the language divide as it relates to Ukraine after 2014, the fact that the use of the Russian language was officially restricted nationwide. How do you think Quebecers, who voted to stay in Canada twice, would feel if the use of French were banned in schools, universities, local TVs and government?!?

One other thing I noticed. Look at the first image, its totally not a good-faith piece of information. Specifically, look at the % splits:
- Over 75%
- 25 - 75%
- 5 - 25%
- Under 5%

The big blob of red you see that takes up maybe 40 - 50% of Ukraine falls in that Red zone, yet when you look at what that color represents, its 25 - 75%. That is literally half of the potential outcomes. Per the image, those zones could be 30% Russian and 70% Ukrainian, yet the way the image is set up implies that the red zones are majority Russian.

Cal88? Presenting biased and misrepresented graphics? No!


If you had a modicum of understanding on the subject, or a somewhat reasonable argument to refute the clear graphic evidence provided by the maps I've presented, which are of independent academic nature, you might have done better than resorting to a dumb personal attack.

The graphs I've posted above aren't "meticulous research", they're very basic information about the ethno-linguistic makeup of Ukraine, a salient aspect of the conflict that most casual observers aren't familiar with.

I don't believe Putin propaganda, but I don't believe the stuff from the Rachel Maddows, Hannitys and the other horrible fare that clogs the MSM. This is a good sample of the kind of material that keeps me informed on items like the Ukraine war:

There was plenty of death and destruction in eastern Ukraine before the Russian invasion, 14,000 deaths and 7 years of warfare. This war was precipitated by ethno-linguistic tensions which boiled over after the language laws and the Odessa Massacre, in which about 40 peaceful pro-Russian protestors were burned alive. That violence happened mostly unnoticed in western headlines and was largely forgotten.



Most people in Mariupol do not support the Azov Battalion, which is stationed there, and made up of hardcore anti-Russian neo-nazi ideologues from central and western Ukraine. They're there and in other Russian-speaking cities like Odessa to keep the locals in check. Of course most people in Mariupol didn't want their city to be destroyed in an urban Stalingrad war either, I concur with that, but the situation is a lot more complex than it's usually presented.

As well, regions close to Mariupol like Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea actually do prefer to be part of Russia, with which they have a greater cultural and historic affiliation, than to remain in Ukraine, which on top of infringing on their basic right to speak their native language, is the poorest, most corrupt nation in Europe and where the standard of living is significantly lower than in Russia.

This war was precipitated by pro-Russian separatist movements that Putin very likely backed directly, for the purpose of destabilizing the region and setting a pretext for invasion. Out of 10 tanks, the first soldier said, only three fired. "The artillery mortar for the mortar-gunners didn't work, the legs were all crooked," he said."There was no command. And if the officers didn't know what to do, what is the sergeant doing there?"

Another soldier said "99 percent of the equipment" in another unit didn't even work, but when the troops warned the senior in command that their vehicles didn't work and their guns "did not fire," he shrugged it off and said to just "go like that."

In another case, troops complained of their commander "disappearing" every time fighting started.
"He was afraid of his own men. He made himself a security team out of a few of the guys. The commander refused to come out and talk to his own guys and was saying that he'd be beaten," one soldier said.
Eventually, "some guys from Spetsnaz [special forces]" really did beat him and left his "face all bloody," he said.
They said the Russian troops never had backup plans or escape routes. Another soldier said one of his wounded comrades in Russian-occupied Donetsk was getting no medical care.

Russia invaded another sovereign country who we have viewed as an ally that we supported with defense and trade, escalating to engaging in killing, targeting, torturing civilians, including kids and senior citizens, and using rape as a tactic. They feel free to escalate as they want in disrupting and breaking international law. Why are we so afraid of escalating? If they don't want escalation, they can just leave Ukraine. I am all for protecting our friends that do not involve putting our kids on the front line. Russia is barely fighting Ukraine. If they caused NATO to join the war, they are done. I doubt they want that. We should stop treating Russia as some unstoppable bully we need to appease.

It should also be noted that the Ukrainians used Turkish drones to distract the moskova's three separate air defense systems to allow the missile to hit the ship. Does this mean the Turks are itching for a fight?

The russian invasion news has slowed, which implies that Special Military Operation: Part 2 - Lowered Expectations is failing as well and Russia's regrouping and lessons learned did little to improve their effectiveness.

Mariupol, whose surrender was imminent over a week ago, is still not entirely subdued.

Three months in and Russia has accomplished the following:
1. Captured kherson, a fake election on succession is pending.
2. Obliterated Mariupol.
3. Captured more territory in the region they were previously controlling since 2014.

I kept thinking Russia would get its stuff together, learn from its previous failures, and start making progress. Maybe I'm naive, but given all that has transpired, and the lack of success by Russia. maybe Ukraine isn't doomed to defeat.

When Russia got involved in Syria 60% of their precision guided missiles failed to hit their targets (anything above 20% is considered an utter failure). In fact a few hit Iran (which doesnt even border Syria). Also given one of the major issues facing the russian military is that the equipment was not maintained and therefore doesn't work. I don't know what is scarier, Russia's nuclear weapons being deployed and hitting their targets, or going completely haywire and just everything everywhere all at once.

And it is much easier to attack than defend when your military is far superior. We saw that with Iraq and Afghanistan. Now keeping the country after the victory is a whole different matter as we also saw in Iraq and Afghanistan (by both US and Russia). The fact that their "feared" military cannot even achieve victory , much less occupy, shows how much weaker Russian military is then they like to pretend or other countries feared. They thought it would be as easy as when they took Crimea or invaded Georgia. That is why they are engaging in terror against civilians because their mighty military cannot compete with Ukraine's military despite numbers and money spent.

When Zelenskyy gave that order, he turned Ukraine's civilians into armed combatants. In the weeks before the invasion, wasn't Azov Battalion training grannies on military rifles near Mariupol?
