That, historically has been the shelf life of many notable right-wing military coups. They usually start on Fridays and end the next Monday. The 1961 military coup against French president Charles de Gaulle, led by some generals who wanted no compromise with Algeria, started on a Saturday and was swept a few days later, while the 2016 Turkish coup against Erdogan started on Friday and was over by Monday.

In all these cases, the fatal flaw is the lack of popular support for these coups, as well as the lack of support among the military at large. Prigozhin commands about 4k-5k troops in the columns currently operating in Russia, he has no support among the Russian army, nor with the Russian people at large and the political establishment. He might have support among some other oligarchs, including many expatriates.

I predict this Prigozhin-led coup attempt will not last long, he's not viewed favorably by the majority of Russians, being an unstable oligarch turned loose cannon warlord. The manner and timing in which he conducted this coup undermines his attempt because it amounts to treason from the perspective of the average Russian, it nullifies any goodwill earned from Wagner's strong performance in Bakhmut.

How many hours and/or words do you think Cal88 has put into defending/supporting Putin on this subforum of a relatively low traffic college football discussion board?

I put the over/under at 1200 hours.

Close to the anti-vax effort by Oski on the Covid thread. But it's still early, Cal88 could make history!

I would guess you took the "Math for ret@rds and future lawyers" series at Cal, 16A-B-C (on the punchcard quarter system), plus maybe the Stat for bean counters (Stat 20?)...

So here's how you'd do it if you are a Cal engineer:
160 pages on this thread, a personal average of ~2 posts/pg, and an avg of 10min per post = 3,200 min. Rounding up to 3600min it's 60 hours, over 16 months, so that's 3.75hrs/month, less than an hour per week.

Nice one. It should be fun watching Cal88, movielover, and BearFarce go into overdrive to spin this development. A couple of things...
1) After more than a year of immediately sharing in this thread any and all Russian propaganda, one of these posters has cautioned others not to jump to conclusions. Or, as the poster put it: "A lot of conflicting and confusing info right now, I guess we'll find out soon enough what is really going on."
2) Can you imagine how long and elaborate Cal88's replies in this thread will have to become to give cover for Russia now? I mean, the amount of elaborate text and the number of charts, graphs, and maps will be mind-boggling.

Of course, these Russian disinformation agents might largely stay away for a while. Or their heads may explode once the money stops coming in from Russia.

Democrats surely love their insurrections.

So another win-win for the West. Just as Putin's war in Ukraine has already been lost by him because after the failures of 2022 he'll never be able to project the image he was trying to project of Putin's Russia.

Now, Wagner as it once existed as a credible fighting force, for Russia but not of Russia, will also cease to exist as it once did. Definitely a great development for Putin haters.

This whole situation is just more proof positive why Russian shills should be ignored. They have dismissed the growing rift between corrupt oligarch Prigozhin and the corrupt state kleptocracy.

Prigozhin didn't just rise up against the Kremlin, he blew the whistle on the corrupt motivations for the stupid unprovoked war. That's what the shills are desperately trying to avoid.
Unit2Sucks
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's going to be fun to watch Russian propagandists spin this debacle as a positive for Russia's war efforts.

It started with Prigozhin correctly calling out Putin and his corrupt kleptocracy for lying to the Russian people about the reason they are fighting this war and how it's actually going. Sound familiar?

Then Putin essentially called for Prigozhin's death (accusing him of treason) and saying that Wagner stabbed Russia in the back.

Quote:

"All those who deliberately chose the path of treachery, who prepared an armed mutiny, who chose the path of blackmail and terrorist methods, will face inevitable punishment, and will answer both to the law
and to our people," Putin said.

But unfortunately for Putin, his military is garbage and was unable to quickly defeat Wagner, so he was forced to negotiate concessions with his cook through Lukashenko.

No matter how you slice it, this is a loss for Putin and his corrupt war effort. Wagner has by far delivered the most results for Putin and now it will likely be far less effective. But that won't stop the propagandists from employing their firehose of falsehoods to mislead.

One awesome tidbit is that by choosing to launch the insurrection on Friday night, Prigozhin took advantage of the fact that the entire Russian military was drunk at the time lol.

And, of course, in other news Ukraine looks like it might be taking advantage of the opportunity - its forces have crossed the Dnipro. Still early, fog of war and all that, but going to be hard for the shills to pretend that this failed insurrection is a sign of strength for the corrupt kleptocracy they have chosen to defend.

Finally - just a reminder that it took almost a full year for Wagner to take Bakhmut from Ukraine but ... (checks notes) ... about 6 hours to take Rostov (which is the most important Russian city in the Ukraine war because it houses their southern military command as well as the command center for their illegal and unprovoked criminal invasion into Ukraine. Obviously I'm being facetious here as Prighozhin didn't actually fully destroy Rostov through criminal bombing and make it uninhabitable the way that they did for Bakhmut but it highlights how weak Russia's military actually is. They have so much of their armed forces committed to Ukraine that they have no defensive capability within Russia. Putin is lucky that no one has any interest in invading his sh(thole of a corrupt nation-state.

Very well said.
Russia is as vulnerable as they ever have been.
And the "just a gas station" iwth nukes is pretty much spot on!

I was listening to BBC radio while over in Berkeley running an errand and the commentary by British journalists was most interesting. They wondered if Putin made a "threat" or made an "offer" to Prighozhin. But they also acknowledged that whatever transpired (in record time I might add) is far more complicated than we know at this time.

One journalist wondered if this was the beginning of other "leaders" pushing back against Putin and his false premises for invaking Ukraine . . .and if there might be a Prighozhin 2.0 sometime over the next 6 months.
