US gov't is about to start the push about "Russian Disinformation". Be prepared. The Hillary Clinton Interview with Psaki really is pushing that yesterday. Fox News yesterday started in on it Trey Gowdy:"I can't understand this sudden push to stop Ukrainian funding, what is going on!!!???" The former intel host says....wait for it...."The russians are starting their disinformation campaign!" lol. The economist wrote an article about Russian Disinfo coming. So is the NY Times. Wooo boy. This is going to be insane again. The FBI is warning Facebook about it again too hah. The articles of course name their sources as "US officials".

We're 33 Trillion in debt with uncontrolled inflation of the dollar and if we don't keep printing money for Ukraine, its because the Russians.
You obviously have no idea what uncontrolled inflation looks like.
Keep being blind to it, that will fix it.
I can see a difference between our current 3.7% inflation rate and the reported 400% in Venezuela or the 113% in Argentina. Since our current 3.7% is only slightly above our long term average inflation rate of 3.28%, I'm not overly concerned at this time.

Oakland is much safer than Tijuana, Juarez, Acapulco (used to be a great vacation spot), and Celaya. Why is there a thread on it?
You might ask the people involved. I grew up in Oakland but haven't visited there in the last 25 years. I figure I don't have any good insights about Oakland's current situation.

It's not pretty. No expert on the past, but since lockdowns it seems like EVERYTHING has graffiti. Jobs continue to move away, Mayor Browns new housing west of the freeway helped a little, but not enough. Crime up, police understaffed, two major sports teams left, and Lake Merritt is a disaster. The grocery store up in the Montclair area is getting hit with frequent theft.

I ventured into some of the Flatlands recently, one area seemed to have two abandoned cars EVERY block and many roads a disaster. It's a Latino city now, which is part of the underlying graffiti issue. It appears there are numerous unlicensed taco stands / trucks across the city, undercutting legit businesses and schools continue to close due to enrollment declines. Pot use is everywhere, Lake Merritt, city streets, and in active in-use warehouses.

Sounds kind of like the Oakland I remember from the late 80s and early 90s before the tech bubble made it seem safe to a lot of people who had no clue.

I'm happy you are not overly concerned. I think there is something unrealistic about your statistics, or maybe I don't understand what these statistics represent. immediately prior to the BLM riot period in history, I was getting a full meal at most neighborhood Chinese restaurants for ten to twelve bucks. i now pay $35-$40 for the same meal. I'm an engineer licensed in California to do Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering, so yes, I have studied math and numbers in my life. But I guess I'm no accountant, because in my world, 3.28% looks more like 328% when it comes to how much more I pay for dinner under Uncle Joe.

You can really see the booming economy when you go to a restaurant. It's been that way for over a year now. My area in New Jersey has higher restaurant prices and full dining rooms and lines out the door. I picked up some sushi yesterday and I had never seen the place so busy. Had to wait in line just to pay for my takeout.

My experience in LA is not the same. Restaurants are not doing well and many have closed.

Agreed. The City and Oakland are in a Doom Cycle, and downtown San Jose hit, too. Portland and Seattle a mess, Los Angeles flooded with "homeless" - aka open drug bazaars.

Many people that do eat restaurant food have it delivered.

Even by your own standards, this is an incredibly clueless post.

Food banks are being overrun across the country, NJ included:
https://www.wbgo.org/show/wbgo-journal/2023-08-22/food-insecurity-grows-in-underserved-communities-as-food-banks-struggle-to-keep-up-with-the-demand

Quote:

Food banks and other organizations that help feed the hungry say they're seeing in some cases unprecedented demand. Simone Gagneron is the CEO of New Community Corporation … which works with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey to provide food:

the organization's pantry in Egg Harbor has seen a 600 percent increase in the number of families it has served since 2021:

"Higher demand than ever… I have been doing this work for over 40 years and started out working in an emergency food pantry and every time I'm on the phone with a food pantry or talking with a food pantry the numbers are just shocking. These are post COVID numbers that are higher than COVID numbers."

And to compound that problem … she said there's been a decrease in the amount of food coming to food banks from the federal emergency food assistance program. She said she wonders how long food pantries can keep up:

"They're primarily volunteer, very low on staff and when you're talking about increases of 600 percent you're gonna struggle with food, you're gonna struggle with staffing, you're gonna struggle with infrastructure, your ability to get food in, your ability to get food out, it's really, it's dramatic and it's frightening."

She said donations are down because of inflation, with people buying less food to donate, so food banks have to buy more food.

Shocker, if you reduce government handouts (as we have moving away from Covid era benefits) more people rely on food banks. That's not a change in the economy, that's a change in charity sources.

Our military readiness has barely been impacted and relative to Russia, we are far stronger now than before. In other words, we could meaningfully reduce military spending if we wanted to waste less taxpayer money, it that doesn't mean that aid to Ukraine is bad spend. It's probably the best ROI we have on our military spend.

Very significant change in the situation with Poland essentially tapping out. Their president threw Ukraine under the bus, comparing it to a drowning man that could drag its rescuers into the abyss with him. Poland is also cutting all aid to Polish refugees, no financial support or free healthcare etc.

Poland has already lost over 10,000 soldiers in Ukraine, there have been some tensions over Poles getting mired in Ukrainian reckless and wasteful military tactics both in Bakhmut and currently in Zaporizhia. Poland now understands that there is no military solution for Ukraine in this war and is now tapping out. The war in Poland is unpopular, much like it is in Czechia, Hungary or Slovakia, as is the economic strain of supporting millions of Ukrainian refugees in a recession with unprecedented inflation levels is being felt, and with the elections coming in October, Polish president Duda is cutting his losses.

This looks like the beginning of the end of the war.

Leaders of the center-left pro EU parties have declared victory after the elections in Poland. Largest turnout in post-Soviet history.

Mykhailo Podolyak, the Ukrainian presidential adviser, said Thursday that Kyiv will agree to a ceasefire with Russia only after Russian troops are withdrawn from Ukraine.

The Russian Federation must leave, and only then will it have a "temporary truce," Podolyak said on his Twitter account.

If you're not hearing any news on the Ukraine front, it's because Ukraine has been losing. Russia has the upper hand, the Ukraine counteroffensive has failed, depleting Ukrainian forces. NATO military support is now going to be split with Israel, while Russia is now tapping into North Korean ammo and MLRS. Russia is going to press its advantage, they are not going to accept any ceasefire without milestone concessions from Ukraine (recognizing Crimea and the current borders, staying out of NATO etc).

Why would Russia need North Korean ammo if they are producing 157 trillion shells a year?

In addition of having the largest stockpile of shells in the world today, N. Korea has a huge inventory of MLRS rockets compatible with Russian systems.

The Russians might also be using NK labor in Russian plants, and outsourcing lower-tech production of shells and ammo to NK, which is the lowest-cost MIC in the world today, with the goal of dedicating their own labor force for the production of more sophisticated hardware like attack helicopters, jets, EW systems etc.

I know it is anecdotal and all that but man, what you types is SO reflective of my experience. I see these official statistics about inflation and often do double takes, wondering if we victims of identify theft and someone is spending/stealing our money or if something happened with official statistics which measure inflation. Because in my little world 2+2 is equaling 5.

Maybe I'm just fortunate, but the Chinese meal that I paid $10-12 for a few years ago around here is about $14-16 now. A steep increase, but not a deal breaker. If they raised prices to $35-$40 around here, they would be out of business in a couple of months. We did lose my favorite Chinese place a couple of years ago but it was due to needing huge plumbing repairs they couldn't afford.

In Redmond the best Pizza place in town which is called "Cibelli's" I use to get a Giant pizza that I could eat for 2 for couple days lol. Was $20 bucks with their monthly coupon. Now its $30. So food here is definitely going up a lot. I notice the Mexican food restaurant seems to have the largest increase in prices, called Mazetlan. Use to be pretty cheap but its seen sharp increases.

Actually $40 if you get it with the Caesar Salad and 2ltr soda

The Ukrainians have recently started putting their ATACMS to good use, scoring a hit on a helicopter air base in Berdyansk, on the Sea of Azov coast, several prized Ka-52s possibly destroyed. The Russians will have to disperse their assets more carefully deep into their territory, and resort to using hangars for their high-value equipment.

Meanwhile the Ukrainians are still taking heavy losses in the southern front, most notably in Verbove (near Bradley Square) and Avdivka, a heavily fortified Ukrainian outpost northwest of the city of Donetsk.

Price is only one factor. When I get banh mi, the prices are 60-100% higher, and sometimes smaller in size. I used to get two sammies for under $10 in San Jose's Vietnamese area, now I'm lucky to score one smaller version.

The bargain hunter has to be creative.

I've always been fascinated by World War I history. The sheer butchery of it all over the smallest of issues. For years, Generals poured hundreds of thousands into the blender in offensives long after it should have been clear the front lines were a deadly stalemate.

In 1917 the French troops got it right and mutinied against more offensives. They stayed in line and fought on the defensive. In 1918 the Germans made one last offensive push with some success, but ultimately paid too high a price. The Allied counter offensive with huge numbers of newly arrived Americans couldn't be stopped.

All that to say, it reminds me of Ukraine. The front lines appear to be at a stalemate. This armchair General hopes the Ukrainians stay on defense. I also feel badly for the Ukrainian civilians who will probably be butchered by Putin in the upcoming months through various artillery and bombing attacks. Putin is a mass murderer.

And Ukraine/Russia reminds me of Israel/Palestine, as in W T F are they all doing this kind of stuff?

Ukraine can have a cease fire any time they want.
