Trump's national security pick: I'm on same page as Jake Sullivan about 'our adversaries' - POLITICO

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/11/24/trump-national-security-adviser-waltz-sullivan-00191412

"Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) said Sunday that he has met with President Joe Biden's National Security adviser Jake Sullivan and that the two administrations are working collaboratively on national security issues during the transition.

"Jake Sullivan and I have had discussions, we've met," Waltz said in an interview with Gillian Turner on "Fox News Sunday." "For our adversaries out there that think this is a time of opportunity, that they can play one administration off the other, they are wrong."

He added, "We are hand in glove. We are one team with the United States in this transition."

….. Waltz also addressed some of the recent national security news, including the escalation of the war in Ukraine. He compared the Biden administration's decision to let Ukraine use anti-personnel landmines as "World War I trench warfare."

The President-elect has been very concerned about the escalation and where it's all going," Waltz said, when asked about Trump's reaction to the recent developments. "If North Korea has made this move, we have made a move. Russia has now responded. Iran is involved. South Korea's thinking about getting involved. Our allies have now extended the range of their missiles as well."

*Takeaways: Confirms my take why tRump has kept his yapper shut on missiles and mines. Confirms that Don, Jr. is not in the loop and they just have him continuously spouting the bullsh@it that MAGA morons want to hear even though it is not reality based. Finally, it is clear that a guy like Waltz will work behind the scenes to make sure Tulsi does not get her appointment. No way he trusts her.

You're not keeping up here, we're lobbing missiles deep into Russia, "we" being US, French and British weapons specialists, and ISR analysts mapping targets and programming flight paths.

This constitutes a major escalation, the Russians have stated that their response will be to use advanced weaponry to take out targets involved in these attacks on a broader level.

This is highly escalatory on two levels:

1- they are using balistic/MIRV-type missiles, that are typically nuclear, but even if configured "conventionally" pack a huge amount of concentrated, targeted firepower. This is the first time such a weapon has ever been used.

2- they have said they would hit targets inside NATO countries that have enabled strikes deep into Russia.

We're kind of at interesting stage right now, where people are pitting their TDS against their PDS:

This guy makes Bolton look like a sane monk...

Lindsey Graham spills the beans on Fox:

"Ukraine's still standing. This war's about money. People don't talk much about it, but do you know the richest country in all of Europe for rare earth minerals is Ukraine? Two to seven trillion dollars worth of rare earth minerals that are very relevant to the 21st century! Ukraine's ready to do a deal with us, not the Russians, so it's in our interest to make sure Russia doesn't take over the place. It's the bread basket, really, of the developing world--50% of the food going to Africa comes outta Ukraine! We can make money and have an economic relationship with Ukraine to be very beneficial to us with peace. So Donald Trump's going to do a deal to get our money back, to enrich ourselves with rare minerals--a good deal for Ukraine and us--and he's gonna bring peace. And Biden's been a disaster when it comes to containing bad guys.

Main motivations from the Russian side:

-security/not having a hostile regime on their border - local version of the Monroe Doctrine
-landlocked geography/access to warm water port (Crimea controls the northern half of the Black Sea)
-Russians outside of Russia - see Odessa May 2014.

As far as "money", this gives you some perspective:

Ukraine is the appetizer here, Russia is the main course.

*Wouldn't have arming them been more of a baller World War III move, or is he reserving ordinance so he doesn't have to Persian purchase again?

Perhaps they reserved ordinance to make sure the world knows, if US missiles continue to strike into their border, that they aren't the ones escalating. Regardless, the western media narrative will spin what happens so that Russia will be perceived as creating the escalation.

Well, that depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you are trying to demonstrate that you possess a weapon system that can hit targets from thousands of miles away and cannot be defended against, then maybe the "attack" was successful. Here's one person's take. Who knows whether it is accurate or not but given what we know about the claimed capabilities of the new missile system, it might be.

This is a very good account of that weapon from one of the best channels on military air power, run by an Italian engineer based in England.

The satellite pictures from the Daily Mail are pretty grainy, and the general tone of that article is quite worrisome given the seriousness of the situation. We've never been closer to WW3.

It's an ICBM essentially.

The US has these also.

It isn't an ICBM, several notable differences including the lower/non-ballistic trajectory, capable of maneuvering at hypersonic speed at lower altitudes, and the guided warheads with hypersonic reentry speed that don't slow down. ICBMs are usually fired on a straight parabolic trajectory and can thus be intercepted relatively easily with systems like the S-400.

The video above is a serious and relatively unbiased source (leans pro-NATO). Scroll to the 18:00 for his conclusions: basically the Russians can now disable almost all NATO air bases with 1/20th the number of conventional missiles previously needed, negating NATO's main advantage over Russia, air power.

Can we believe this picture? Commentators
claim this hit also destroyed subterranean facilities.

Scott Ritter, who can get out in front of his skiis, claims everything was destroyed. I was puzzled as to what kind of explosives were included, but it seems none?

They do travel at very high speed, but in a straight parabolic trajectory, thus can be easily tracked and intercepted by S-400s or THADs. They also lose some speed at reentry. Compare the new Russian warheads speed before impact to those conventional ones Iran has recently launched on Israel.

"….that they aren't the ones escalating."

So an invader of a sovereign nation gets to play the "We're not the ones escalating" card? Waltz said Fox News the missiles were a counter move to Russia using NK regulars.

The Russians haven't used Norks in Ukraine, no evidence of that yet. This was just an excuse to escalate.

Ukraine lost its sovereignty over the Russian parts in the east and south the moment it made that ethno-linguistic minority second class citizens. If Canada restricts the use of French in Quebec, that province would instantly secede, no ifs ands or buts. Same in Belgium/Flanders, Spain/Catalunya, Basque etc.

We had no problem redrawing Yugoslavia/Serbia's borders following an intense NATO bombing campaign on that country, or carving out South Sudan, Iraqi Kurdistan and "Rojava" in Syria today, and are still occupying Syria and Iraq against the wishes of local governments and the great majority of people from those countries. And those countries are halfway around the world from us, not next door like Ukraine is from Russia.

Movielover has been highly critical of Putin at times on this board, going as far as to call some of his decisions stupid and saying he was responsible for miscalculation when it came to how he felt the Ukraine operation would end up going.

It is within Putin's power to end that tomorrow. I feel more sorry for the Russian and North Korean lads getting killed and maimed because they don't even have any skin in the game. They are just following orders, much like our soldiers in Vietnam that took their last breath on foreign soil.
