But the Very Smart People here will keep insisting that Russia only cared about NATO expansion and this is not a war intended to absorb Ukraine back into Russia.

NATO's expansion was about absorbing Ukraine into the EU sphere and turning it into an enemy of Russia, knowing full well that (1) the large Russian minority in Ukraine would be collateral damage and (2) it would preempt Russia to intervene militarily. Many highly respected US policy insiders and analysts have made this rational assessment in the past 2-3 decades.

At one point Russia wanted to join NATO and was rebuffed by both Clinton and Dubya, who openly mocked that idea (see also Biden's putdown about Russia joining up with China and Iran as a result of their openings being rebuffed and of NATO's continued expansion eastwards).

As well, for a historical context, northern and eastern Ukraine had been part of Russia for centuries, while southern Ukraine was colonized and settled by Russia 3 centuries ago, in the late 1700s, after they defeated the previous colonial power that occupied and settled the region, the Ottomans. The area of southern and western Ukraine had been the borderland between the Ottoman, Austian-Hungarian and Russian empires (and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before that).

A lot of these same arguments apply to Israel too, you just don't accept them there because you're reflexively anti-America and Israel is a US ally. When America's adversary (Russia) does colonialism and war you are quick to forgive.

Not me, I remain consistent: fighting a war and trying to ethnically cleanse a population is bad, whether it's America's friend or America's enemy that does it.

Every anti-war critic gets smeared as anti-American, par for the course, that was true with Vietnam, Iraq and nearly every other post WW2 US military campaign.

You're not anti-war if you make excuses for Russia's war in Ukraine.

You're not anti-war if you can't be intellectually honest about how NATO and the US did everything they could to provoke this war.

Why does this logic only apply to NATO and Russia but not to Gaza and Israel? If anything, Hamas did far more to provoke Israel by actually attacking on their soil. Yet you never try to use that to excuse Israel's actions in this war (nor should you). Only Russia gets this charity. Curious.

Palestine didn't have a bunch of third-party countries goading them to sacrifice their blood and property to fight a war against a country that had them completely outmatched in terms of population and arsenal. There's no "proxy war" happening in Gaza's benefit.

Sure they did. Iran, for example.

I'm sorry, you must have me confused with someone who reads the CIA's favorite disinformation site when it comes to war and foreign policy.

So you don't think Iran was backing Hamas? That's your position?

Or do you not want to think about it so you're going to complain about the source again?

Israel is backed by the United States. That's the end of the discussion.

Mediazona was doing a very accurate and professional job of monitoring Russian KIAs, until late last year when they had come under political pressure. Their previous total was around 140k KIAs, was subsequently boosted to 240k.

On just this page you continue to do what you have been doing for years. Be dishonest about what mediazona is reporting and conflate KIA and casualties. I can point it out over and over but you are on some kind of mission and continue the misinformation.

I think we've actually just gotten to the bottom of what he really believes (I suspect Cal88 is in this bucket too): he's just a campist. Not actually anti-war or anti-imperialism or anti-colonialism or whatever principle he might claim to hold, he's just decided the USA is bad and that he wants to be in the other "camp," whatever that may be. It's the only explanation for wanting to oppose Israel's war and not Russia's. Israel is in the American camp and Russia is not.

Saying that one country is backed by the US and "that's the end of the discussion" pretty much lays it bare. That's his only criteria. Has nothing to do with who started the war or who was the aggressor or who has killed more people (those are just factoids to deploy whenever it's convenient), it's only being for or against America that matters.

Yep.

The drone attacks are for the purpose of provoking Putin & Russia into an attack on a NATO Member -- which would then [supposedly] trigger an Article 5 response by the U.S.

It doesn't take a very thorough reading of the NATO Treaty to find that Article 5 applies ONLY if a NATO Member is attacked FIRST. It DOES NOT apply if a NATO Member participates in the initial attack or provocation -- which the U.S., UK, and Germany have done with their support of Zelenskyy's drone attacks.

It's also extremely important to look at the timing of Zelenskyy's drone attacks against Russia AND the U.S./Israel war on Iran: The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for 2027 is currently stalled in the Senate, and all the people who benefit handsomely from U.S. "defense" spending are lobbying hard to spend more of OUR Tax Dollars for more death & destruction.

No.

But you'll likely be dismissed for believing nonsense.

Clearly Trump is FAR more beholden to Netanyahu, Miriam Adelson, the NeoCons, the Israel Lobby, the AI/Tech Bros, the PayPal Mafia, and Elon Musk than he is to Putin.

Trump is simply recognizing reality. The U.S. cannot defeat Russia, nor dislodge Putin. Any $$$ spent on the Ukraine War, or "defending Europe" is a waste.

Like it or not, the U.S. must learn to "get along with others" in order to survive. That includes Russia, China, and Iran.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned "puppet masters" cannot tolerate anything but U.S. Global Hegemony.

This is why they're discussing the use of nuclear weapons.

Idiots!

It's time to return control of U.S. foreign policy to the U.S. Sovereignty is important.

What's your thinking for how to get Putin to stop attacking Ukraine?

At best, Trump's fawning over Putin and displaying inferiority is a national embarrassment. At worst there is something far more sinister at play. The link is just one of many examples.

To the last Ukrainian

The U.S. and Western Europe and our Asian allies need to be in this together. History has taught us we are stronger together. Many want to see us be more weak. Incapable of helping each other. We are better than that.

Propaganda redux: General David Petraeus now claims 1.4 million Russians killed or wounded.

Meanwhile, Witkoff and Kushner met with Putin for three hours.

How many Russian soldiers died in the war with Ukraine https://en.zona.media/article/2026/08/28/casualties_eng-trl

And now for some non-fiction

Quote:

My sources for my estimate of over 1 million Ukrainian soldiers killed in combat is the anti-Putin Jamestown Foundation which reported a figure of 750,000 Ukrainian soldiers KIA and 750,000 seriously wounded and unable to return to combat in early May 2025.

By dividing that estimate by 38 months (late February 2022 through late April 2025), we can calculate 19,700 Ukrainian KIA and 19,700 seriously wounded every month up to that point and since. Multiply 19,700 by 16 months (May 2025-September 2026) and you get an additional 315,000 Ukrainian troops killed in action bringing the total Ukrainian KIA to 1,065,000. My source for Russian war dead is Mediazona which cites a figure of 242,747 confirmed Russian KIA.

Ukrainian officials have recently stated that only 22-25 million Ukrainians remain in areas under Ukrainian control out of a prewar figure of 41 million which means Ukraine has lost 39-46.3 percent of its population. The US currently has nearly 343 million people. The equivalent loss to the US population would be 133 million to 159 million people. So once again I ask how can anyone with a triple IQ seriously argue that Ukraine is winning its war against Russia?

He's definitely acting as if he believes that. I'm not sure he's right.

But regardless, he is not interested in a peace agreement.

History Legends suggests that Russia could enact various troop call up plans after the upcoming Dumas (elections). Russia has 3 million reservists, and possibly up to 1 million active reservists, to tap. This is if Russia decides to call up an additional 300K soldiers this Fall.

Surprising, considering how Ukraine is "winning the war."

When did I say that? I think the war is a grinding stalemate that only ends when Putin decides to end it.
