Sure, but there was at least some expectation that a strong hand from the government could prevent any international incidents. The Trump people are just chaotic and capricious.

Yeah but, in a few years, there will be some new factories opening up in the Rust Belt! Of course, even with the tariffs, it will be hard to compete with stuff manufactured in developing countries, so the jobs will be paying minimum wage.

Who wants to work for minimum wage in this country? Immigrants.

Oops...

Manufacturing jobs peaked in 1979 at 19.8 million.

100%. Jobs that can be done just as well by people in developing countries for a small fraction of US minimum wage, it's just ignorant to think we can get, or even want those jobs back. Exceptions might be industries we need to keep alive here for national security reasons. And even then, on a limited scale that can be ramped up.

Otherwise, being on top of the proverbial food chain, we need to keep developing the next good jobs, not the last ones.

Building the next gen manufacturing is the next good jobs. I wish you guys would get this. Not only were we doing this in Vietnam, India, Cambodia, China...but we were fine selling our own people out by doing it. Your country has to make things. If you don't, you're setting yourself up for a calamity. I mean covid was a mild crisis but it showed you the problems with not being able to make your own pharmaceuticals.

"American-made products will almost always cost more to produce, because labor in countries such as India and Mexico is less expensive than U.S. labor. In 2016, Business Insider looked at how much some top American products would cost if made in the U.S. A pair of Levi's jeans that cost $128 could rise to $328, and that is before today's increased inflation levels."

Capability to manufacture pharmaceuticals would be covered in my "national security" provision, above.

We need to be able to make things that can't be made just as well, oversees, for a fraction of the cost. As "they" become able to manufacture those things, we need to be coming up with other new things, constantly adapting.

Globalization, to a large extent, is here to stay. Closing off our borders to trade (and immigration), we would gradually become a backwater country.

Selling to the globe is fine but there needs to be massive limits on it in order give your labor work security. Otherwise you're just allowing companies to keep hiring and firing to find the cheapest labor. That has to stop. In fact, democrats support of globalization is the most shocking of all this.

It's crazy how the parties have switched and dems have become so for entrenched global business that they are fine throwing away the working class. By the way, I have my issues with Elon and H1-B but it's something I'm putting to the side right now in order to see a massive sea change in how our nation operates. H1-B will be a big issue in the future though.

No, the kids and parents should stick together in this situation. Obviously, if the parents should not be in custody, then the kids shouldn't be either.

I'm a capitalist. In capitalism, there are gonna be winners and losers in most every venture. One of the roles of the government is to provide support to the unemployed and underemployed and help them as they try to become winners.

It's crazy to me that the GOP now attempts to gain votes by embracing disproven economic practices instead of actually trying to help people.

THE GOP IS NOW ALL ABOUT BEING PROTECTIONIST AND DESTROYING WEALTH.

HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THESE IDIOTS WERE VOTED INTO OFFICE

White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett defended President Donald Trump's tariffs on Sunday, refuting the idea they will cost American consumers more.

"I don't think you're going to see a big effect on the consumer."

I'm no economist, but from what I do understand I think the above is actually an argument for WHY the US carries trade deficits with other countries: because our currency is so valuable and therefore we can afford other countries' stuff and they can't afford ours. The way to remove a trade imbalance with a poorer country like, say, Lesotho, would be to actually make us poorer so they could afford our stuff.

I don't think that is what people actually want in making America "great" again, but I guess Trump is going to try it!
