The sources is from bioiosolids placed in depleted deep subsurface oil and gas formations under a US EPA program, where the earth's high temperature biodegrades the organic compounds to generate methane gas, which can ultimately be used to produce safe renewable energy while the carbon dioxide is sequestered. Just one of many programs (several of which are by UC schools) looking at the use of biofuel techniques.
