The US government and NGO apparatus has been deeply involved all over eastern Europe for the last several decades, especially in Ukraine, and also in Georgia, Romania, Czechia, Slovakia etc, with billions spent and a lot of political figures being personally involved.

Hungary has a growing industrial base and is becoming a European hub for EVs and batteries with German and Chinese local plants and R&D. They need access to cheap Russian gas to sustain these industries.

I disagree.

While GDP growth was an "ok" 2.8% overall and job growth under Carter (19771981) was robust in volume, with approximately 9 to 10 million net new jobs created, it was accompanied by high inflation that rose to DOUBLE DIGITS and a rise in the unemployment rate to 7.4% by the time he left office.

His term was marked by the same kind of STAGFLATION that we see now given an energy shock. He banned imports of Iranian oil in 1979. That oil embargo led to prices nearly doubling to $39.50 a barrel and fuel shortages similar to 1973.

This led to the CPI peaking at a whopping 14% in 1980, my sophomore year at Cal.

This led to the highest average Misery Index on record post WW-2, eclipsing that of Gerald Ford.
