98 players in this World Cup are from France, 54 from the Paris suburbs. In the pregame show, Thierry Henry, a product of that region cited street and pickup football culture as key to this success.

Having worked for a French company, I have observed most French will tell you they're from outside Paris. I'm beginning to think "outside" covers several hundred miles.

The population within the boundaries of the city of Paris is 2 million, and that of the metropolitan area is 12M-13M.

If you live in Paris proper, you're either fairly well off, a local Boomer, or you have inherited your pad, with a few small exceptions. Most of my HS classmates ended up getting their own place outside of town, as do most young professionals who move there. As well the extended public transit network is pretty good and covers a wide area, it is easy to commute.

I would need a map

Wednesday action

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal at 9am
Harry Kane and England at 1pm

Doubtful either will score, but today is being billed as an opportunity for them to keep pace with yesterday's star bonanza!

Kane has 61 goals this past year with Bayern Munich.

Ronaldo is the now old man who has scored as many goals since age 30 as Kane in his career. Is Saudi Arabia's league worth anything other than the hundreds of millions they pay him? Will he even start for Portugal??

Some stats comparing the 5 players:

Goals per game (career breakdown)

Lionel Messi (age 38)
* Club: ~901 apps, ~790 goals = 0.88 GPG
* Country: 196 caps, 115 goals = 0.59 GPG
* Career: ~1,097 apps, ~906 goals = 0.83 GPG

Cristiano Ronaldo (age 41)
* Club: ~1,097 apps, ~830 goals = 0.76 GPG
* Country: 227 caps, 143 goals = 0.63 GPG
* Career: ~1,324 apps, 973 goals = 0.73 GPG

Kylian Mbappe (age 27)

* Club: ~470 apps, ~367 goals = 0.78 GPG
* Country: 98 caps, 58 goals = 0.59 GPG
* Career: ~568 apps, ~425 goals = 0.75 GPG

Erling Haaland (age 25)
* Club: ~340 apps, ~285 goals = 0.84 GPG
* Country: ~50 caps, ~55 goals = 1.10 GPG
* Career: ~390 apps, ~340 goals = 0.87 GPG

(note: Haaland's national ratio is inflated by Norway's smaller sample and opponents, but it is still elite)

Harry Kane (age 32)

* Club: ~640 apps, ~438 goals = 0.68 GPG
* Country: 112 caps, 78 goals = 0.70 GPG
* Career: ~752 apps, ~516 goals = 0.69 GPG

Harry Kane

… statistically this is very likely Harry Kane's best season ever (and one of the best striker seasons in modern football history).

Harry Kane 202526 season (to date)

From current verified season data:

* Bundesliga: 36 goals in 31 matches
* Reports across competitions put him at roughly:
* ~60+ goals in all competitions
* ~50-55 games played

That puts him around:

Season goals-per-game (approx)

* ~1.10 to 1.20 GPG (all competitions)

That is elite even by Haaland standards.

How it compares to Kane's previous peak seasons

Previous best season (202324 at Bayern)

* ~44 goals in ~45 games (all comps)
* ~0.98 GPG

202526 season (current)

* ~60+ goals in ~5055 games
* ~1.10+ GPG

So he has:

* More goals
* Similar or better efficiency
* Better trophy context (Bayern dominant season)
* Higher Champions League + cup output (reported hat-tricks, knockout scoring runs)

Historical context (important)

This season also places him in a very rare group:

* Messi 201112 (~0.94 GPG)
* Ronaldo 201415 (~1.0+ GPG in peak stretch)
* Haaland 202223 (~1.0+ GPG)

statistically it is a Ballon d'Or-level output season

Something for the casuals: today is the debut of Colombia and Luis Diaz. Diaz is in my opinion the most underrated player in the world. He has been on great teams, first Liverpool and now Bayern, and he has played with more famous players. He is not that tall and he is somewhat slight, so when you look at him you don't expect much. But then the game starts and he is a master with the ball at his feet and is constantly dangerous. He won't be talked about with the big names in the tournament, but if I was forming a team, I would take him over Dembele. Give him a look if you are watching at 7pm pacific.

Portugal 3-1 Ronaldo gets one but doesn't live up to the star showing of yesterday.

England 2-1. England went through qualifying allowing 0 goals and Croatia is aging.

Ghana 2-1. Pace, attacking talent, and creativity will push them past Panama.

Colombia 2-0. Uzbekistan has a core that's grown through the ranks together but they just aren't skilled enough to match up with Luis Diaz and company.

Mbappe is so fast, Haaland so big and fast and powerful. Messi's aim is amazing.

USMNT and most squads take shots from distance like Messi goals 1&3 and have them not even on target - in the stands. Messi's were tucked in corners, amazing. I've see it before.

Thanks for keeping my soccer appreciation in mind, concordtom. I am watching a fair amount of this. Cool the way the famous goal-scorers* are coming through... and now Harry Kane today.

Hey, if Tosh Lupoi, who can recruit anybody, got Erling Haaland to play football for Cal, what position would he play?

* I'm still processing through a lot of stuff, such as the names of the positions, i.e. are the terms "striker" and "forward" the same thing? There appears to be some nuance to it.

Back by not much popular demand, round 2 of the sicko post, the reserves. Here I mention what I know about the USMNT players to. make them more (or less) relatable. The main rule is no research is involved, this is from my head. You can read the first installment on page 21 of this thread.

Backup Goalie 1: Matt Turner. Considered the best goalie in MLS by the analytics nerds. Was the starting US goalie in the 22 WC, and reigned from 21-25. Went to Arsenal after 22 WC and sat. Then went to Nottingham Forest and sat mostly but played poorly when he got a chance. Then went to France and his club ran out of money and sent him back to MLS. The nerds say he is the best goalie again in MLS, better than Freese, but I don't believe it. The eye test says he lost his confidence in Europe. Is half Jewish and could have played for Poland. May be the best Jewish player ever on the USMNT, the only two others I know are Jeff Agoos (a weak defender in the 90s) and ? Birnbaum (forget his first name), a mediocre center back in the 2000s. Did not start playing until high school, walked on in college, not drafted in MLS, I admire his grit, but I hope he does not play.

Backup Goalie 2: Chris Brady. Don't know much about him other than he is about 22 and plays for Chicago in MLS. And when I have seen him on highlights he has looked poor. Very indecisive. The Cincy MLS goalie Roman Celetano looks good on highlights but I don't know much about him. The 2030 goalie is supposed to be Diego Kochen, who sat on the bench for FC Barcelona but is now looking for a new team. I have not seen him enough to have an opinion.

Backup outside back 1: Joe Scally. From New York and played youth soccer for NYFC MLS that was run by Claudio Reyna, Gio's father. Gio also played on that team. Now they play on the same team in Germany and are close friends. Borussia Moenschengladbach (sp?) is the team, kind of a middle team in Germany's highest league. Scally was a starter this year and is even talking about moving up teams. Good athlete, not that much skill, not great defensive awareness, I have no idea how he starts in Germany.

Backup outside back 2: Max Arfsten. Went to UC Davis, I think. From Fresno, maybe. Plays left back as he is left footed but his defense is suspect. For an American who went to college he is a very good dribbler. Poch brought him in out of obscurity because he the USMNT lacks dribblers. Having a good season in MLS. I could see him moving to a good league but maybe not a top team.

Backup left center back 1: Austin Trusty. I think he played in Philly MLS before moving to Europe. Won the Scottish championship this year with Celtic. Big, like 6'4'', and a good athlete. Is getting better at soccer but still would be scary to have him out there. The USMNT is miserable at center back. I bet you did not know they distinguished left center backs from right center backs. It is usually based on the stronger foot, Trust is left footed.

Backup right center back 1: Mark McKenzie. I think he played with Trusty in Philly. Now is in France in the top division but not a great team. I think he usually starts. Very average. Decent passer, decent athlete, a little small for a center back. Was very nervous a few years ago and made some brutal mistakes but now I think he is the most consistent reserve center back.

Backup right center back 2: Miles Robinson. A few years ago was a star MLS player looking at Europe. Was very, very fast and had reasonable skills. Then he tore his achilles. I think it healed but his confidence did not. He should not play under any conditions. Started against Germany in the sendoff game and was a disaster.

Backup center midfielder 1: Christian Roldan. Considered to be a great clubhouse guy. Made the team in 22 for the same reason. Short, not fast, and limited. Good passer. MLS lifer for Seattle.

Backup center midfielder 2: Sebastian Berhalter. Son of the previous coach. Good MLS players but maybe not quite a good enough athlete for this level. Famous for his set pieces (free kicks and corners). Poch says he has a great attitude. Came on for Pulisic at halftime of the Paraguay game and did not cover himself in glory.

Backup center midfielder 3: Gio Reyna. Son of former USMNT captain Claudio Reyna. I think he is the most talented player ever on the USMNT. His goal against Paraguay was brilliant. Was considered a rising star at Borussia Dortmund when he was a teen playing next to Erling Haaland. Between injuries, a big head, and not playing serious defense, his career in Germany has stalled. But still only like 23, some smaller team should make him their star. His skills are out of this world.

Backup winger 1: Brendan Aaronson. From New Jersey and seems very New Jersey to me. Probably listens to Bon Jovi. Got married during training camp, I saw one picture and his wife is smoking hot. Famous for his hustle and stamina (do not connect with previous sentence). Did okay in the Premier League this year for Leeds. Someone to put in with a lead to play defense from an offensive position.

Backup winger 2: Tim Weah. Son of Geogre Weah, player of the year in the world one year. His father was a magnificent player and after retiring became President of Liberia. I think he grew up mostly with his mom in Brooklyn. Fast like his father but not skilled like his father. Can't really dribble. Shoots with great power for a smaller guy. Was playing in Italy with McKennie but now plays in France, I think. Smart player, nice backup.

Backup winger 3: Alex Zendejas. Small, really small, like 130 pounds, too small to be effective. Has spent his career in Mexico and had a lot of success this year. But not good enough for the team. Should have been Zavier Gozo in this position. Was on the U17 national team with Pulisic, Haji Wright (named later), and maybe Tyler Adams. That was a talented team but went out in the first round.

Backup striker 1: Ricardo Pepi. Turned pro at around 15 and played for FC Dallas in MLS. Big fight with Mexico for his services. Now plays at PSV in the Netherlands where he scores a lot of goals. But there are a lot of goals in that league so it does not mean that much to me. Not precise enough in his play. Some of the internet prefers him to Balogun, but I strongly prefer Balogun.

Backup striker 2: Haji Wright. Was a huge startas a teenager and was considered as good as Pulisic at the time. Big man who plays with finesse, too much finesse most think. Flamed out in Germany. Has mostly played in the Championship (second division) in England where he has improved a lot. Led his Coventry City team to promotion to the Premier League for the 26-27 season. I think he is better than Pepi but Poch does not. Scored against the Netherlands in 22 but it looked like an accident.

Now I am going to check myself into a mental institution.

It seems to be that he is just waiting for delivery in the middle of the box and hoping nobody is guarding him. Instead, he's covered by two.

No runs wide, not even shifting diagonally from back post to front, or vice versa.

I look forward to commentary of others who watched closer. I, too, was busy and didn't catch the whole game.

Bench him and get others in there. He had his chance. Harsh but I saw facial expressions. Am I wrong?

Based on Erling Haaland's elite physical profile of 6'5" and roughly 200-205 lbs, he would most likely project as an NFL Wide Receiver (WR) or a Tight End (TE) after a necessary weight-gaining program.His combination of rare height, explosive top-end speed, and aerial coordination makes him an ideal candidate for offensive mismatch roles.Primary PositionsWide Receiver (WR - "X" or Red Zone Threat): At 6'5", Haaland matches the height of legendary NFL boundary receivers like Mike Evans or Calvin Johnson. His proven elite acceleration and sprint speeds on the football pitch would allow him to stretch defenses vertically and win 50/50 jump balls in the end zone.Tight End (TE - "F" or Receiving Tight End): Modern NFL tight ends like Travis Kelce often function as oversized wide receivers. While Haaland is currently a bit light for an NFL tight end, his frame could easily carry an extra 3040 lbs of muscle without sacrificing too much agility, making him a devastating matchup nightmare for smaller defensive backs.Alternative PositionsDefensive End / Edge Rusher (DE): If placed on defense, his length, height, and explosive first step are exactly what NFL scouts look for in an outside pass rusher. Like the tight end conversion, he would need to bulk up to roughly 245+ lbs to withstand the physical run-blocking of offensive linemen.Kicker / Punter (K/P): Given his world-class leg power and precision striking a football, he could theoretically transfer those mechanics to kicking fields goals or punting, though it would completely waste his elite athletic and physical traits.

Personally, I think he could make significant money as a sperm donor.

Uzbekistan vs Colombia is the game of the tournament so far?

It wasn't as close as other matches, but players went all out. The last goal by Columbia was amazing.
