Our secret weapon would be handing them a defective ball when it's their throw in, corner or goal kick, then putting good balls back in place when it's ours.
All the volunteers around the field are Americans.

Say, any reports of lasers pointing at opponents in the Mexican games? Keep an eye out for that, they do it all the time against us.

1994 was better when a schmo like me could get a ticket for $50

Not to me. In 1994 a not great Brazil team beat a not great Italy team to win the tournament. I played soccer during the finals instead of watching it, although I did see the penalties after my game was over. It was definitely fun and surprising to see the US team make the second round, but that team would lose to the current team by like 10 goals.

I watched the US-Colombia match in my apartment in Seattle (!) with a friend. When the US won she said she felt like dancing in the streets. We looked out the window and there was not just no dancing but there was no one on the street at all in sleepy Wallingford. In this Would Cup in Seattle Marshawn Lynch led a parade of thousands to the gates and hundreds of thousands of people were everywhere downtown. (Although the comparison is imperfect since there were no games in Seattle in 1994.)

I was cool that the games were less expensive and less corporate and the structure with 24 teams was better. Still, once we get to 32 this World Cup should be amazing.

Bummer for you. In 1994 as broke college students, 4 of us (1 of us being Brazilian) paid $50 to see Brazil play. We got there early and partied with Brazilians. I became a lifelong fan that day.

The night before the Brazil vs. USA game we went to a hotel full of Brazilians and partied again. There were Americans out front chanting USA and looking lame while we had a great time inside.

We watched the final match at a house party in Berkeley and when Brazil won we saw the Brazilians partying in the Pasadena streets. Somebody got the idea to drive down and join the party. We rented a car (which took too long) and I drove because for some reason I was sober. We got there around midnight and the police were trying to disperse the still partying Brazilian crowd. My friend got pepper sprayed. Good times, good times.

Drove from Berkeley to Pasadena to join the postgame party, that's nuts. Thx for sharing.

Messi and MBappe were both amazing yesterday, especially Messi, except for his missed penalty.

It's still hard to believe they played on the same team and never won Champions League.

Not to mention Neymar.

Their side did not fit together. In modern soccer teams have at most one non-running defenders at any position, but better to have none. Strikers like Lewandoski and Havertz have won trophies because they play both ways.

If you were PSG's owner at the time, knowing what you know now, wouldn't you still have all three on your team? Maybe the problem was with the center backs or defensive midfielders?

I don't think you can win at the highest level with three guys who don't play defense. It would be even more difficult now. On the other hand they did have some deep champions league runs. It could have worked.

There are also lightly enforced financial fair play rules. Spending so much on those three prevented spending as much on others. Now they have a balanced team and are two time defending champions. I don't think that is a coincidence.

That's what Steph Curry should do.
I don't feel sorry for $$$$$ old stars who go out losers.

https://worldcupbracket.xyz/

All that bracket does is place the higher ranked team. They may as well just have a site that says "Argentina".

The more relevant aspect of this bracket, which you have completely missed, is that it gives you the round of 32 teams with the current standings, with the confirmed teams in bold and projected in grey. The rest of the bracket and future predictions are not as relevant.

I get how they rank 3rd place teams.
What I don't get and want to know is how they allocate those 8 highest ranked teams into the brackets.

As I understand it, the rules about it are rather complex and do nobody bothers to explain.

Stuff like,
*you can't face anyone in your original Group until much later.
*you can't face โ€ฆ. until โ€ฆ.

The result is that they have to wait until all group games are done and the 8 are identified to know for sure.

That said, they said on air that the calculations predict 99% we get Bosnia Herzegovina. How or why? I have no f'ing clue.

One win and one goal in three games. Take your bagpipes and go home!

USA should be bolded already in this setup.

Canada vs South Africa is already bolded as the first knockout game. I like that matchup. Good luck, Canada.

USA would get Egypt or South Korea in the current prediction after we hopefully beat Bosnia. That's pretty good. Meanwhile, Mexico would get England in the second round, and then Argentina after that. But those games would be in Mexico, which is entertaining.

Germany plays a meaningless game today, Thursday, but then has a short turnaround to their first knockout game on Monday. USA gets max rest between games as we go today but then not until Wednesday.

Fun stuff.

Scotland's chances to make the next round not looking good though. 3 points and a -3 goal differential. Gonna be tough.

I see we get Bosnia in the round of 32. They are not bad. Most of their starters play in good leagues. Dzeko was a great striker but he is 40. American Esmir Bajarakterivic or something like that is a nice little player. But we could not ask for better. 2-0 or 3-1.

Don't forget Herzegovina!

All right, it's time I googled Herzegovina. I always hear "Bosnia and Herzegovina", "Bosnia and Herzegovina". I have no idea what Herzegovina is... and that's a shame. Obviously, it's some area in the former Yugoslavia or thereabouts that is now its own country. Well, sort of its own country. I wonder how the feel about being the second half of an "and". Do they ever wish it were "Herzegovina and Bosnia"? Have any of you been there? Have family roots there?

(Please don't anybody send me a link to Herzegovina or, even worse, provide an AI report. I'm just chit-chatting here.)

Even after looking up what the different parts of "Bosnia and Herzegovina" were supposed to be I found it confusing. And honestly, I think that is the root of it: these regions were bound up as one "unit" under multiple regimes (the Ottomans, Yugoslavia, etc.) to the point where it was too hard to separate them so they just made it one country and called it good.

Algeria vs Austria - stuck in 2nd and 3rd.
Kick the ball in your own net in order to take 3rd and avoid Spain in Round of 32, in favor of USA orโ€ฆ. Who knows.

Maybe I should be more worried about facing an "and" country after our fiasco against Trinidad AND Tobago.

Exactly!
And inner city populations love Zaire, I mean Congo, Haiti, South Africa and Ghana, who got robbed against England by the referee(s).

That said, I haven't found any noisemaker that tops the bagpipes. And so, the cultural challenge is on!

By the way, as I've written here, the immigrant if my last name came from Scotland, and when in 4th grade mom asked if I wanted to play an instrument (clarinet, trumpet, violin) I said clarinet because I thought those were bagpipes. I've always wanted to play bagpipes.

Probably because I'm mostly full of hot air!

Was just thinking this: It's really about the messaging...

Instead of making Canada the "51st state" (of course they're not going to like that), just call it United States and Canada. We still control it, because that's what we do... and we more than double in size (drill, baby, drill) and get tens of millions of new white citizens, to boot!

Take both Canada and Greenland. Rebrand as US and the Northern Territories, has a manly 18th century vibe.
