Mexico plays rough, they are the kings of gamesmanship (cheating, that is), and their fans behave awfully. And now they are taking away some of our players. Vamos South Africa!

Mexico starting American Brian Gutierrez. For some reason the US never really valued him and did not call him up for younger age World Cup teams. Also not playing 40-year-old keeper Ochoa. I don't know anything about the starter Rangel other than he is younger. Striker Raul Jimenez is their key player.

Omigod. Hilarious.

It is times like this that I remind people that Rick Barry played a whole NBA season wearing a toupee.

I've seen their fans throw water bottles in games played against U.S. but so far, they've been terrific hosts for visiting fans.

I remember my grandmother pointing out an article on his hair circa 1976. I didn't know he wore a toupee.

Bafana bafana look disorganized and a bit intimidated by the venue and competition.

Tickets for this game were in the low to mid 4 figures, you have an audience of Mexico's 1% in the stands today.

PS to Tom: it's Czechia, not Chechnia (which is part of the Russian Federation)

Among the curious past name spellings on the South Africa side is #13, "Sithole"

I guess Trump was right about certain countries.

Okay, kickoff for me now. See you in a couple hours.

I spent low 2 figures per month to watch all games via Fox One on Amazon Prime.

Team Curacao busting moves on their bus. Curacao is the smallest nation to ever qualify to a World Cup, pop. 155k.

I don't know what RSA did in qualifying but they are terrible and should not be in the Cup. 32 was perfect. Red card on Montes was harsh. Could cost them in the next two games.

With a 2-0 win today Mexico will get in with two ties, or even possibly with1 tie and a 1 goal loss. Should be easy at home.

SA did edge out Nigeria in their group (they tied twice head to head). Most qualification groups in Africa only had 2 decent teams, with 9 groups and 10 spots available.

Interesting. Nigeria has not been good in 30 years. It is weird given they are such a big country and they don't play another sport that I know of.

I saw the red on Mexico: debatable ref decision. Clear and obvious goal scoring opportunity? After the kick past the defender, it looked like he'd be able to get off a shot.
I immediately thought it could be red, and it turned out to be so. But then the debate began with the people on TV.

What to y'all think?

First red against S Africa was drawn by American Brian G. That was fine. Second red on S Africa looked like a dive by Mexico, not a punch to the face.

Two games?
It's a one game suspension, no?
I thought the ref decision there was okay.

Call is consistent with the red given earlier for the SA player who slapped the Mexican defender as that defender was actually blatantly obstructing/fouling him, make up call of sorts, though there are some grounds for considering that the Mexican red was in a situation where the defender was the last man defending.

For the first red on SA, I would have given two yellow cards, one for the Mexican defender for blatant obstruction, one for the SA attacker for retaliating with a slap, and a free kick for SA.

Good point on obstruction before the the hand to the face. I had the whistle going again Mex there, not a red for SAfrica.

And yes, Brian G slowed down to drawn the foul. Thems the breaks in those situations.

1. First red classic DOGSO (denial of a goal scoring opportunity). I am not sure about earlier obstruction, did not see.
2. Second red I was not watching the game at that point (so boring) and there was context so no opinion.
3. Red on Mexico was horrific. DOGSO is only called when the defender is behind, but Montes was in front. Never seen that before. Montes is their second most important player after Jimenez so he should not have been on the field, blame the coach.

Agreed. One red always increases the probability of another red. Two reds is very rare.

And why I've said blame the rule book.

I'm okay with red.
Ball was beyond Montes and the attacker was going to get it next.

Montes didn't play ball, he played man to deny him from having a GSO.

There are rules and there are interpretations. If you watch a lot of soccer like I do you learn the interpretations. I have never seen a DOGSO like Montes was called for. It was a bad yellow, a yellow and a half if it existed, but never a red.
