Did Paraguay just not play like this against the US? Kind of amazing we put up 4 goals on them.

Not at all. They did not bunker against us. They played straight up because they did not properly respect us.

Haha, big mistake I guess.

Floodgates are going to open on counters now.

Uzbek ref in over his head, letting Paraguay run roughshod and get away with all kinds of gamesmanship, like the 5 min disruption before the penalty was set. Thankfully he did make the right call on the Doue' trip.

Paraguay playing like they're up by a goal, I guess their tank is empty.

France got a nice taste of what it's like to play in CONMEBOL and CONCACAF. Lotta teams use these kinds of tactics.

The sooner that game is forgotten, the better. I guess it is very hot. 99 high in Philly today. Easy for me to complain from my air conditioned couch.
Last thought: The Paraguayan keeper is 26, 6'6'', and plays in ... Argentina, and not even a top team in Argentina. He looks like the keeper of the tournament. Someone should grab him.

Are the refs that bad though? A normal ref would have dished out a half a dozen cards to Paraguay.

Players play out of their minds when they play for their country and in the World Cup, goalkeeping is a very mental game.

72 minutes in Stu Holden has said nothing of value.

E) The American way is to keep playing until someone scores. Golden goal rules should be changed so that the first one to score in extra periods wins if this isn't the rule in the knockout rounds already.
FIFA last used the Golden Goal rule in a major tournament in 2004.
Why was it abolished?
It is deemed unfair, because the other team cannot respond. A bit like the difference between the sudden death NFL overtime back in the day vs the NCAA rules where both teams have a possession in OT, the latter rule is more "fair".
Not the answer I was looking for, nor the respondent.
Lone gripes about something already explained in this thread.
So I'll say it again. Golden goal caused refs to not want to call anything for fear of suddenly ending the game.
I never heard this before, but it makes total sense. Imagine the outrage in an elimination game where the golden goal is a result of penalty taken after the VAR shows the ball grazing a player's arm that sort of looks like it's in a natural position in one angle vs. another angle in the corner of the 18-yard box far away from the goal.
I hate the golden goal because soccer is a timed event and tiebreakers should model the standard game. This is why I also hate penalty kicks.
What would be the solution then if the score is still tied after extra periods?
Remove players like in hockey and play on.Imagine we had old school MLS penalties in the 2026 World Cup 😂🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/IOjZdmvL0G

What if teams took penalties like this?
My brother took a photo with Cobi Jones at the last US game. Sent me the photo and called him "Kobe." I have decided not to disown him, but I briefly considered it.

Although it's lamentable, certainly fun to see someone else get the treatment.
When some of these countries stop that act it will be a good day. That was abysmal of Paraguay. Shameful.

France played plenty of western hemisphere teams in the recent past, including Paraguay in the 98 World Cup, it was never as bad as today. Part of it was the peewee league referee from Uzbekistan.
Paraguay had a better team in 98, featuring keeper Chilavert, who made a clumsy statement earlier about Paraguay having to "face a squad from Africa" today.
