Lukaku is a bad sub for Belgium at this point, up 2 goals, and they put a slow poacher in? Along with Doku?
It's also a big mistake for the Belgian coach to put Lukaku in right before the break, it allows Poch to exploit that change.

Back to the drawing board for the USMNT, first item on the shopping list is a solid young keeper.
Well that was painful. The US is better than it has ever been, but there is still so far to go. In the last three World Cups they have been in they scored only single garbage goals in the round of 16. I thought they would lose today but I did not think they would be outclassed.
The only time the US looked alive was when Reyna was put in to start the second half. But the Freese blunder knocked the wind out of their sails. I still don't think it would have changed the result, but it would have been more exciting.
As I have mentioned a few times, there are some teenagers that will join soon that will help. Zavier Gozo is a more dangerous winger than Dest, and I think he will eventually be more dangerous than Pulisic. Cavan Sullivan has very high level skills in the midfield. Diego Kochen is supposed to be the next goalie, and coming from Barcelona, he must have better feet than Freese. There are others. Inch by inch, the team will get better. But we are going to have to be patient. And I am not. I have been waiting 36 years.

For a little while it looked like the USA might be drawn into a favorable bracket, but by the end no. Even if they'd gotten past Belgium it would have been Spain and probably France to follow. A real gauntlet.

Yes, the US is not a top 8 team. Never have been. It is possible that they will be by 2030, but it is not a given.
At the next World Cup we need to bring more high ceiling players rather than veterans who are sort of okay. We need more players who can potentially play in a round of 16 game. Pepi is not at that level, period, never will be. And he got on the field, guys like Roldan and Aaronson are worse. It is better to flameout then to not go for it. Not sure why the player selection was so conservative.

Losing 1-0 to a loaded world champion Brazil team with Romario, Bebeto, Leonardo, Cafu was indeed in retrospect a very respectable achievement for that team.

I disagree. We play soccer now. At that time and really until 2022 we just bunkered against any decent opponent.
Plus the world has not sat still. The top teams now are miles better than the top teams then.

Spain will make Belgium look like Belgium made us look. There are levels. Belgium is top 10 but not top 5 and definitely not top 3.

Where was Pulisic this whole tournament? Wasn't he supposed to be our bell cow? Yeah, I know, injuries. He was hurting so bad that he was sitting on the bench in the second half with his head in his hands. Bad look. Other teams' goal-scorers have actually been on the pitch, scoring goals. Heck, even Trump had enough presence to be yelling "Fight! Fight! Fight!" when he got attacked and injured.
That wasn't the same Weston McKennie we had seen in earlier games.
I suppose we struggled moving up to a much higher caliber of opponent than we had been facing.
What the heck was Freese doing on that third goal? That was the point where it started becoming an embarrassment.

The unfortunate truth about Pulisic is that he just gets hurt too much. Had a lot of promise and sometimes still shows it but that next injury is always around the corner. Too bad.

This being a media driven country, we need a "star" and Pusilic was nominated to be that and sell
breakfast cereal but he stunk in the first half before he got hurt. .
I don't know which was more elementary school level on
the third goal: the goaltender or our defender behind him. This is truly the only time in the tournament when I thought I could do that.
Agreed about the games. Unlike past years I've watched a lot more and appreciated much more. Fantastic event with fantastic moments. Will continue to root for Spain, Argentina and Morocco .
