Media in the U.S. occupies a weird space because it's BIG enterprise (run by 6 corporations) and information. It has the dual role of providing news/information but media as an institution protects the interest of those in power. It also operates a business, primarily through advertising.
This combo brings a dysfunctional duality of maxing out profits and still do the official function of information. Guess which side won?
The thing is, in a largely unregulated field (cable unregulated, Fairness Act and Equal Time Act done) so let the profiteering began. Les Moonves, now deposed grabby CEO, said it straight, "Trump might be bad for the country but he's great for (media) business." Those asswipes don't give a F about democracy...they're making money!
Rupert Murdoch and News Corps/Fox News figured this out and added division, hate and plain lies to goose the system. They're leveraging media/money with power. They have screwed democracy in both the U.S., Australia and the UK. They've been doing it for 20 years and it's all documented.
So yes, the public has been gaslighted on purpose. The media plays it for profit...and we swallow, wondering if and how the shttstorm known as Trump will end. The destruction of norms, laws and standards is real...but gad damn it, ti's business. We're making money so **** OFF.
And BTW, the Russkies didn't help, but they've had major aid in the U.S., like the Senate Majority Leader, Moscow Mitch...Putin's b*tch. Yes...have a nice day you motherfcckers.
