FWIW I think I read somewhere a while back that Mississippi went back to phonics - over teacher objections - and that's part of the improvement. But maybe I'm misremembering that.

It's not fake news but the numbers are adjusted for demographics.

You're correct, they went back to teaching phonics instead of using pictures for students to try and guess what the words are. Why education ever went away from phonics is beyond me.

Yeah, you need to take a balanced approach because different people learn differently. Personally, I think I learned to read largely from the "whole language" approach, but phonics really helps a lot of kids. They have reinstituted a phonics approach here in my community (my kids are past that age) and I'm sure it will help kids.

Too much phonics, though, would be like too much grammar
