Probably because too many rich people want to exploit cheap labor. The issue is further compounded by our inability to actually enforce the laws. It is so broken that folks wanting to change the laws can't agree on how to fix it.

I could be wrong but I believe our amnesty laws require us to not send people back who are applying for amnesty. We can make excuses but if that is the law then that is the law.

Has anyone considered reading about the new asylum policy?
It's a lot closer to what Trump wanted than the GOP is willing to admit. It's really funny to hear people who don't really understand what's going on attack Biden based on false presumptions spoon fed by right wing agitprop.
In reality, Biden is under attack from the ACLU and human rights groups for not being more accommodating. It's obviously a no win situation, but at least the human rights groups understand the policies they are fighting.
Conservatives just want to complain about something even if it's a policy they favor and a subject area that doesn't really impact them at all (which is true for the vast majority of Americans).

Do you realize we are having a conversation about the flood of immigration and it is not centered around pointing fingers at a political party? This is a both party issue. You are seeing things that generally aren't there, even though there is dissatisfaction with Biden lifting Trump's Title 42, which sent Migrants to Mexico instead of within our borders.
The real issue is that Congress hasn't done s*** about immigration for decades and the situation will not change much unless they do. The Executive Branch can only nibble around the edges.
Maybe it shouldn't be about finger-pointing at either party, but at least in recent years AFAIK whenever there has been an attempt at immigration reform it's been Republicans who have killed it. Not all Republicans, of course. Some have made real efforts at advancing new laws. But when it bogs down in the Senate it's because they lack Republican votes, not Democratic ones.

One of my sisters works for DHS handling asylum claims, mostly from Europe and Asia rather than from Latin America. Almost every year during the Trump administration their department budget was cut. Each time she had to sweat out whether she would be laid off, but fortunately for her, she survived each time. By the time Trump left office, their staff had 30% fewer people. I haven't heard her say if they hired replacements since Biden came in, but I doubt it. Having those people on the job would no reduce the backlog somewhat. I've been seeing disingenuous claims for months about the expiration of Title 42 and the flood of immigrants we would face. The reality is that 42 didn't penalize people for making multiple attempts to cross the border and probably led to a multiplier for that reason.sycasey said:

Claims about "surges" or "invasions" at the border are usually overblown. The real issue is the slow, unwieldy process for people to apply for entry, which creates backlogs and then further knock-on issues.
