I have not followed it closely but I thought I read something like the contingency fund has @5B and full monthly payments are 9B.

The administration is taking a morally bankrupt and politically asinine position. Especially if you are willing to make things happen to pay military members (as the parent of a service member....thank you) you cannot do less for citizens and food. S T U P I D. It seems so patently obvious that the correct moral thing and politically smart thing would be to aggressively spend the contingency fund...send a pro-rata amount to each state and let them figure out how to divvy it up amongst their recipients (ie that whole states' rights / local control thing that Rs supposedly advocate for). Slow rolling food isn't going to put pressure on D's it is going to expose yourself as heartless *******s.

It's especially politically asinine because Trump is out there talking about how HE is going to stop the shutdown and HE is going to do xyz thing with SNAP funds. He's actively destroying the Republican argument that the shutdown is the Democrats' fault and putting all the responsibility on himself. No wonder the polling keeps showing that more people blame the GOP.

And morally bankrupt Democrsts want to allegedly fund HC for illegal immigrants, pay off Big Health Care / Big Pharma, and balance their profligate state budgets using funds intended / used illegally for illegal immigrants.

Pulling the funds for illegal immigrants supposedly cuts this Gordion Knot.

Red States are coughing up requested HC information regarding Billions in illegal payments for illegal immigrants, but Blue States are stonewalling. That's another battle unfolding.

I do not see how those things are relevant to the SNAP discussion. The single most elemental component of the America First agenda is to take care of Americans. Maybe other than guarding against a military invasion nothing is more fundamental to that principle than feeding the most vulnerable. It is indefensible to withhold money appropriated for that purpose.

At some point we should probably vet or re-qualify SNAP recipients for Americans. In 1980 we had approximately 20 million on food stamps, we're now a much richer nation, and now it's 42 million.

CBO and the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) estimate that enacting the bill would increase deficits over the 20252034 period by $2.4 trillion, excluding any macroeconomic or debtservice effects.

H.R. 1 would make numerous changes to tax provisions and spending programs. Although many of the changes would be permanent, expiration dates are indicated for some tax and spending provisions. Also under the bill, certain aspects of some other provisions would change over the next decade.

JCT has estimated that permanently enacting 16 of the tax provisions that would sunset under H.R. 1 at the end of 2028 or 2029 would increase primary deficits over the 20252034 period by an additional $1.4 trillion.
