uber quick redshirt soph (he was academically ineligible his 1st yr) jahlil carson has told asu hc (and good guy) herb sendek that this will be his final season in tempe

no, carson is not transferring to ucla to play in alford's 5 wild wings chaos offense with no pg

jc (who excels at breaking down opposing d's to facilitate the sundevils offense, needs to work on his perimeter shooting-32% on 3 pters last year) will be declaring for the nba after this season

the 17th annual mlk jr classic (hosted by de la salle) on jan 20, 2014 will feature the following games & cal targets at haas

10:30 am-castro valley vs st marys

12:15 am-el cerrito vs sacred heart

2:00 pm-jesuit (carmichael) vs newark memorial

3:45 pm-bishop o'dowd (featuring ivan rabb, the #1 player on planet earth in the 2015 class & isiah thomas, 2015 pf) vs capital christian (with dj wilson, michigan commit)

5:45 pm-de la salle vs long beach poly

7:30 pm-sacramento (featuring solomon young, 2016 pf & christian terrell, 2016 guard & tre finch, 2016 guard) vs salesian (coached by cal grad bill mellis, maybe jabari & javid will serve as asst coaches for this game)

perfect schedule would have included hayward's moreau catholic (with oscar frayer, 2016 wing that the staff feels has an alan crabbe style to his game & damari milstead, 2017 pg)...no doubt that theo will get mc scheduled next yr

guests of honor: ivan's family including grandpa (longtime bears fan), probably enjoying the short drive from the house to haas

congrats to dj wilson of sacramento's capital christian on his commitment to the michigan wolverines (strong biz undergraduate school) this weekend during his official visit to ann arbor

dj is an excellent student athlete with a 4.0 gpa, a great attitude with an unselfish style of play and a long term athletic upside with a strong interest in staying local & playing for the bears

wilson did not have an actionable cal offer at this time & realistically did not want to risk losing his michigan slot while waiting for higher prioritized cal big men targets diallo, welsh & eleraky to make their collegiate decisions

many hs prospects report having offers from various schools but except for the 5 star ivan rabb's of the world, many of these offers are often conditional...so when a player says he has a cal offer, that isn't always the entire story...

at 6'8" 200 lbs wilson is currently too skinny to be a rebounding/defensive force banging in the paint...he's also not a consistent enough shooter to play on the perimeter...so dj is gonna take a few yrs to build strength & develop his skills as a late bloomer to realize his potentially significant upside

cal's recent recruiting as evidenced by the monster class has taken a significant leap forward...developmental players like emerson murray, alex rossi & kaileb rodriguez would not be offered today by monty & the staff

good luck to dj wilson as he moves forward with the blue & gold of michigan

This may not be up to date, and all may may not be "actionable", but according to Scout, the offers we have out there for 2014 are Welsh, Diallo, Malik Pope, Evan Fitzner, and Tory Miller, and with Rorie committed, we have 2 more spots available. For 2015, we have 11 offers out to Ivan Rabb and 10 others, for a total of 2 spots, assuming no one transfers in or out, or otherwise leaves the team.

Eleraky, too.

There could be a scenario where they bring in Rorie, Walsh, Diallo and Eleraky but it's more likely just the currently-available 3 slots.

name: evan fitzner

class: 2014

gpa: 3.0+ (at an academically challenging hs)

height: 6'9"

weight: 210 lbs

position: stretch 4 with a perimeter game

hs: francis parker lancers (san diego)

hs coach: jim tomey

aau: double pump

cal unofficial: tbd

cal official: tbd

cal connection: played with garrett galvin in middle school

family: dad mark 6'8" played bb at stanford 1974-1978
mom cheri 6'1" setter at hawaii & pro beach vb player
bro bryce 6'8" bb, fb & vb 3 sport star
sis emily 5'8" 13 yr old setter w/upside

college leaders: cal (offer)
stanford (unofficial june 15th)
ucla (recruited by steve alford @new mexico)
colorado (offer)
oregon state (offer)

fitzner quotes: "he (mr cranky pants) doesn't sugar coat anything and i appreciate that...he's been around the game for a long time so i'm just happy to learn from him...he said he thought i did some good stuff as far as rebounding and blocking shots but we both agreed that i didn't shoot the ball really well...or at least as well as i'm capable"

shockster overview: with his elite ball handling & shooting skills for a big man (check out his video), fitzner more than any other 2014 prospect on the west coast needs to select the right program that will showcase his unique skills set...under the right coach, evan could potentially be the next ryan anderson...under the wrong coach, evan could be the next brendan lane

evan & his family are very academically focused...if he is offered by dawkins (who will likely be fired after 2014) & his 3.0+ gpa clears stanford admissions, his dad's alma mater might be the leader...cal offers the best combination of elite academics & a stable coaching staff that will best showcase evan's talents

fitzner is a commit to the st marys gaels

the bears & evan parted ways this summer after the fitzners last minute canceled their unofficial visit to berkeley

my take is that evan's dad mark played all the cards in favor of stanford & when that hand never materialized, a mid major was the best available deal on the table

nyc, don't think that's gonna happen...not sure if evan ever felt quite comfortable in an urban setting like berkeley...as 71b likes to say, cal isn't for everyone

fitzner has underachieved both academically (3.0 gpa) and athletically (not conditioned well enough to play games at the hs level with full intensity) despite his upper middle class background & opportunities

ef comes from a closely knit family but he's one of these sheltered kids who might mature more quickly once he leaves home for college

the biggest plus of the cal monster class is the highly competitive nature & mental resolve of the incoming freshmen...they all have chips on their shoulders & are hard workers (i.e. not soft)...in summary, they are unbreakable

look at the children they're all willing and eager
like when i was a kid and i watched jordan play
and dreamed of being up on the nba court one day
realized early that i didn't have it
that don't mean that there ain't people that took that stab at it
like my man every day practice shooting baskets
dreaming about playing for the magic or mavericks
high school star a 30 point a night average
4 year college starter alright average
didn't get drafted
still he could see the dream
now he's 35 playing for some european team
knees f***** up constantly throbbing
now he's popping oxycontin
and it's becoming a problem
had to move back with his mom
and she want him to get a job
but he doesn't have the qualities they need
can't put 3 man weave drills
under specialty skills
more and more he eats pills
prescription refills
he still sees that dream that vision and it haunts him
a voice inside his head and it taunts him
his mom thinking that's he's on something
and she right

malik broke the same leg that has been injured before last sat while trying to dunk in warmups at the elite 50...the elite 50 is a sacramento based showcase of its best players for college scouts & its participants this yr included cal targets pope, dj wilson, solomon young & christian terrell

mp's hs basketall career is essentially over

pope has scheduled official visits to academicaly mediocre schools gonzaga, san diego state & kansas...after those visits he intends to evaluate his trips & either then decide among those 3 or make additional trips with cal & ucla the most likely destinations although the bruins receiving a commit from bluiett at the 3 may take them out of the running

all athletes are one play (one injury) away from their sports days being over permanently...with 2 major rehabs on the same leg, malik is realistically one more injury away from being done as a basketball player

so what are malik's priorities?

is he gonna be the kind of guy who wants to be well rounded with an infinite number of career possibilties (including the nba) like cal grad & sacramento mayor kevin johnson ($30+m nba earnings) or does he want to put all his cards in being a baller (which if it doesn't work out professionally means he'll be qualified to be a security guard at the elk grove outlet mall)?

if he can't play bb anymore, how happy is he gonna be in freezing azz spokane or lawrence in the winter?

when malik tells his hs coach he likes san diego state because of the beaches & that his friend goes there, what is he thinking???...the critieria for selecting a long weekend roadtrip might include beaches & buddies, the critieria for selecting a college should be a 50 yr decision

san diego state is a glorified jc with a 90+% acceptance rate in a beautiful location...unfortunately its graduates don't have many doors opening for them when they leave

malik pope by all accounts is a great kid with lots of enthusiasm & an unselfish teammate in addition to being a 2014 top 20 player when healthy...he would be a terrific fit as a golden bear under monty & gottlieb and would further develop his game playing with jabari bird & the cal monster class

malik, what are your priorities?

as i wait with a cal buddy for our delayed flight to scotland* now is a good time to share the story of jason kidd's recruitment

*we will be traveling to trump's new course in aberdeen to continue my quest of playing the golf magazine world top 100 courses, the trump course is the sole new entrant to the 2013 list that i have not yet played...other highlights will include the machrie on the isle of islay (immortalized by the long and winding road), my favorite course in scotland the quirky cruden bay and of course, a return to the home of golf, the old course at st andrews

when kidd was with the phx suns, i used to host j, the team's asst coach frank johnson (later become the hc before losing too many games & having an affair with the also married wife of the suns largest corporate sponsor resulted in him being fired (kidz, that's that's the quickest way to throw away a promising career) along with my close friend the now deceased dr gary mack (the team shrink...counseled j on marital issues with mrs crazytown, joumana) at my summer club in flagstaff, forest highlands (which is considered the augusta national of arizona)

j told me during one of our rounds together that his final college list included kansas, arizona, ohio state & kentucky with the jayhawks probably the leader despite his never actually ever visiting lawrence...he started playing in informal pick up games at harmon organized by his friend monty buckley...j told me there was a defining epiphany like moment when walking thru a grove of trees near the creek north of harmon with his bb bag over his shoulder on a beautiful bay area afternoon that it all came together for him

kidd realized how much he loved his mom & dad and that he wanted to share his college experience with them...it was that simple in jk's mind-he never even made an official visit to cal, there was no need to do so

so j played in front of his mom & dad and friends at the #1 public university in the world before moving on to generate $200+m in nba earning before recently being named the hc for the brooklyn nets

i last saw j at whisper rock a yr ago & he told me that he's never regretted his time at cal...he cherishes the collegiate memories he shared with his parents, dad steve died in 1999 (real talk, our parents will not love live forever and our time with them is limited)

fast forward & another top player in the usa from oakland is faced with similar choices/opportunities

what are your priorities in life, ivan?

studio executive insiders are apparently revealing that the legendary creator & director of unbreakable, m night shyamalan might actually be an alias for cal's s&c coach scott thom

This would go a long way towards explaining the quality of his films since "Unbreakable," which is on my personal top 10 list. He's taken a Tedfordesque tumble.
