Pac 12 and Big 12 should just merge. Call it the Rose Conference.

Each team gets one natural rivalry to play every year. You play 6 conference games in your region (includes your natural rivalry). You play 4-5 against the other division. Winner of each play in the Rose Bowl, unless one goes to the BCS.

Annual schedule set similar to the NFL, you play a schedule based on your previous years result.

Player wants to transfer inside the conference and has an NIL, he has to pay school for costs before leaving.

If team mutually want to play a marquee game not on rotation, both teams have to "buy" that game for $10-15mm. Example.....USC and Ohio State want to play.....then pay the conference for it.

If the UC Regents allows this it would be a massive betrayal. Unless Cal leadership actually wants to downgrade athletics, which wouldn't be surprising.

That's the end of college football as a national sport. There are now only two conferences. The Pac 10, Big 12, and ACC are now in a second division with a big gap between first division. FCS is now third division.
If this happens I think I might just be done with college sports. Really.
.

I am thinking the same. It's just not interesting anymore.

The new Big-12 could already be dead on arrival, how many of those guys are calling the PAC-12 right now?
Other way around, I think.
We still have the rights to Rose, unless some members think that does not matter.

How often is the Rose Bowl the winner of the Pac and the winner of the Big 10? Rose Bowl died a few years ago.

I'm all for college football splitting into two leagues:

1. Minor League NFL: SEC, Big 10, and the other big money teams.

2. A new college football l;eague that returns to the regional tradition and rivalries between universities. Sure, the level of competition would be significantly lower than the Minor League NFL, but the college gameday experience that we all loved as football fans could return. And with some good planning, I can envision a great league with four-ish regional conferences that could then playoff with each other for a championship. It's essentially like the FCS now (or college baseball), but dramatically expanded.

I want Cal in #2. We can't survive in #1. Nor do I think we'll be invited.
I don't think we can survive in #2 either, not without cutting most of our athletics department and the university taking on 100% of the stadium debt.

The one bright side of inflation. Stadium debt doesn't seem so bad any more. Still going to be rough for the school to assume that much debt. I also feel bad for all the donors who threw big money at our program just a few years before it formally became irrelevant.

Why is this? Is it just because they'll make more $ from B10? Or is there some sort of other reason?

USC/UCLA leaving would sincerely kill Cal sports interest. If this happens, besides Furd, I don't really care about the conference at all. I already follow SEC/B10 on a more national level, this move would fully destroy my interest in the Pac.

And lets be honest, once USC/UCLA go, Oregon & the Arizonas are probably on their way out too
If this actually happens and if the miracle actually happens one day, too, with the stars aligning properly, Cal could conceivably play USC in the Rose Bowl.

UCLA (and USC) would make a boatload more as a member of the Big 10. Their TV deal dwarfs ours.

Another interesting question that Wilner raises in his article:

"It is not known whether the schools are joining the Big Ten in all sports, only in football, or just in football and men's basketball."

I'm guessing all sports.

I do wonder how UCLA will convince the Board of Regents that they can split from Cal. Very disappointing money grab, nonetheless, that undermines George Kliavkoff's efforts to improve the Pac12s standing.

They could try leaving Regents entirely, something I have thought we should entertain as well.

I'm serious. Cal vs. Yale every year would be pretty cool (kid vs. parent). And, yes, it would be cool if Stanford came along as well.

Regents could create stipulations that effectively could kill the deal.

There was a point where I'd watch all 3 hours of College Gameday. But last season, I'd only tune in for the really big games. College football just isn't interesting when you have the same teams every year. And the NFL is much more fun (on and off the field).

I'm not one of those old fogeys. I actually am for the NIL-ization of college football. But this news leaves me ambivalent.

We discussed this at length a year or two ago
It was generally agreed that the Regents could kill the deal and would kill the deal if Cal were not included in the deal.

Why would the Regents agree to allow UCLA to leave and strap Cal with a debt (on the stadium) it could not pay. The Regents are responsible for ALL campuses of UC.

Wasn't one of the purposes of the Pac12-BIG10-ACC"alliance" to not poach another team from another of those 3 conferences? Didn't the B1G 10 propose the alliance so that the B1G 10, ACC and PAC 12 wouldn't lure teams from each other? If so, doesn't this mean that the B1G 10 cannot be trusted?

Money. Basically the driver behind all of this.

Random musings:

Will the Pac be able to retain Oregon and Washington, or will those schools, and perhaps others, also be looking elsewhere?

Pac probably needs to add schools for existential reasons. Which schools? Think TV markets and therefore $$. San Diego State, for example, may get the offer it's wanted for years.

It's going to be significant financial hit for Cal athletics with or without conference expansion because the TV payout shrinks with the loss of the LA schools. The structure of Cal athletics may need to change dramatically.
Perhaps this is why AD Knowlton was able to obtain that big contract extension. Big changes to navigate and manage ahead.

I expect you'll start hearing rumors of Oregon, (with another school, probably UDub), to the B1G in the next 24 hours. You will also start hearing other programs... UNC for instance, for a rumored move to the B1G or SEC.

This is musical chairs. A seat and a bag must be secured before the $$$$ song stops.
