Spoke to a few sources who called USC and UCLA's move to the Big Ten a formality, with a press conference expected in next 24 hours. Perhaps as soon as tonight. This is essentially done.

That's the end of college football as a national sport. There are now only two conferences. The Pac 10, Big 12, and ACC are now in a second division with a big gap between first division. FCS is now third division.
I am thinking the same. It's just not interesting anymore.

I'm all for college football splitting into two leagues:
1. Minor League NFL: SEC, Big 10, and the other big money teams.
2. A new college football l;eague that returns to the regional tradition and rivalries between universities. Sure, the level of competition would be significantly lower than the Minor League NFL, but the college gameday experience that we all loved as football fans could return. And with some good planning, I can envision a great league with four-ish regional conferences that could then playoff with each other for a championship. It's essentially like the FCS now (or college baseball), but dramatically expanded.
I want Cal in #2. We can't survive in #1. Nor do I think we'll be invited.

How often is the Rose Bowl the winner of the Pac and the winner of the Big 10? Rose Bowl died a few years ago.socaliganbear said:I don't think we can survive in #2 either, not without cutting most of our athletics department and the university taking on 100% of the stadium debt.oskithepimp said:

The one bright side of inflation. Stadium debt doesn't seem so bad any more. Still going to be rough for the school to assume that much debt. I also feel bad for all the donors who threw big money at our program just a few years before it formally became irrelevant.
UCLA's debt problems would vanish in a heartbeat

If this actually happens and if the miracle actually happens one day, too, with the stars aligning properly, Cal could conceivably play USC in the Rose Bowl.eastcoastcal said:USC/UCLA leaving would sincerely kill Cal sports interest. If this happens, besides Furd, I don't really care about the conference at all. I already follow SEC/B10 on a more national level, this move would fully destroy my interest in the Pac.sycasey said:If this happens I think I might just be done with college sports. And lets be honest, once USC/UCLA go, Oregon & the Arizonas are probably on their way out too
UCLA (and USC) would make a boatload more as a member of the Big 10. Their TV deal dwarfs ours.eastcoastcal said:UCLA's debt problems would vanish in a heartbeat

Why is this? Is it just because they'll make more $ from B10? Or is there some sort of other reason?

I do wonder how UCLA will convince the Board of Regents that they can split from Cal. Very disappointing money grab, nonetheless, that undermines George Kliavkoff's efforts to improve the Pac12s standing.

The biggest obstacle in such a move had long been UCLA leaving behind Cal because it meant breaking away from UC system, per sources. One Pac-12 source said they were "stunned" UCLA would make that move. https://t.co/jWgX3ZBs2J

If the UC Regents allows this it would be a massive betrayal. Unless Cal leadership actually wants to downgrade athletics, which wouldn't be surprising.

The Big Ten presidents met last night, discussed USC & UCLA's entry into the league and conducted, basically, a straw poll, sources tell @SINow.

It wasn't close. They agreed to expand the conference.
A formal vote could come in a matter of days if not *hours.*
this is a sincere question, I am genuinely asking- would UCLA consider breaking away from the UC system (if its even possible)Strykur said:Regents could create stipulations that effectively could kill the deal.BearSD said:Does UCLA need the regents' approval to join the Big Ten?CaliforniaEternal said:

As expected, USC and UCLA estimate that they will make more than double in annual media rights distribution with the move to the Big Ten, sources tell @SINow.

Booth.
Don't you think the physical, conservative Big Ten players will be a little too rough and scary for the weak, liberal California players? This seems like a disaster waiting to happen, and frankly, I'm disgusted

Why would the Regents agree to allow UCLA to leave and strap Cal with a debt (on the stadium) it could not pay. The Regents are responsible for ALL campuses of UC.
I expect you'll start hearing rumors of Oregon, (with another school, probably UDub), to the B1G in the next 24 hours. You will also start hearing other programs... UNC for instance, for a rumored move to the B1G or SEC.PaulCali said:
Random musings:
Will the Pac be able to retain Oregon and Washington, or will those schools, and perhaps others, also be looking elsewhere?
USC & UCLA are expected to join Big Ten as early as 2024 season sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. 1st reported by @wilnerhotline. “It’s not official yet but I’d put it at 90 percent,” industry source said. Both Pac-12 schools initially approached Big Ten about joining, source said
