philbert, 6' 175 lbs mason love from park hill south high school in parkville missouri is the nation's #4 ranked punter in the 2024 class...it should be pointed that the #1 punter is committed to georgia & the #3 punter to texas along with phx's horizon high school elite talent (and 4.73 gpa) #8 punter kanyon floyd to asu (full scholly offer)...these rankings are based upon camp participation & kanyon did not attend the kohl's florida camp which caused his ranking to drop from #2 to #8

love put on a bryan anger fireworks show today at cal's specialists camp at memorial stadium, this full scholly offer comes with the endorsement of longtime nfl kicker/berkeley grad ryan longwell

mason is not a dumb azz, he got a 4.0 gpa

right now the bears got generational talents/future nfl prospects in 4.0 gpa kicker michael luckhurst & 4.37 gpa david bird, mason could be the necessary 3rd piece of the puzzle for multiple future seasons of elite special teams play in berkeley

cal's monster offensive line recruiting update:

6'75" 280 lbs with a 83' wingspan 2024 offensive tackle jensen somerville from lehi high school in utah is gonna official visit cal on june 22-25th

jensen is not a dumb azz, he got a 3.4 gpa & 29 act score and offers from stanford & northwestern

check out somerville's remarkable athleticism, he gotta lotta potential upside for coach bloesch's trench warriors that places a premium on focused true student athletes that are relentlessly physical & intelligent in executing their assignments with non stop motors (no taking off plays)

econ, i got zero interest in recruiting rankings which are typically compiled by amateur internet sofa kings that have never actually seen 95% of the players they rate but make no mistake about it the stanford football program is gonna lose 10+ games this season
I agree that individual recruiting rankings are often not accurate. But the overall aggregate team rankings do show a profound trend that the teams these services rate highly and their on field records correlate quite well. If you look at 5 year recruiting rankings and the records of those teams in the top 15 there is a remarkable trend of on field success.

One individual class is not as noteworthy. But stacking classes is. Throw in transfer classes as well now. What the top teams are able to do now is replace recruiting misses with proven players from other programs. This makes a team like Georgia that was already stacked almost invincable.

Stanford will be impacted by their inability (or reluctance) to admit transfers. They will miss on HS players. Every program does. But now the net of their transfer activity will be negative overall. They have and likely will continue to lose more good players via the portal than they bring aboard.

They way Cal has recruited under Wilcox does not give me great optimism. But we saw this cycle a big change. The portal became a focus. The roster got a makeover. They brought in fewer HS players that take time to develop. Most HS recruits do not impact like Vatikani, Ott and Earby did a season ago. But that points out the poor recruiting of previous seasons as much as those players readiness to play.

But I will take the overall recruiting ratings over what we have seen from this staff when it comes to HS recruiting. Those rankings have remarkable accuracy to on field success. Are there mistakes? Sure. But overall the team performace matches up pretty strongly with the recruiting rankings. Not perfectly but well.

The transfer portal can make the roster rebuild go much quicker. Most folks felt that you needed 3 recruiting classes to make over your team. Now it can be done in as little as 1 or 2. HS recruiting is necessary, but a reliance on it will harm your program now. HS recruits hit at about 50% and they take time to develop.

Until I see a Justin Wilcox program score better with their HS recruiting results I will take the overall ratings of the services as a decent benchmark. Despite the knowledge that they make numerous mistakes individually.

what's my favorite golf hole in los angeles?

that would be the kinda secretive 100+/- yard bonus bye hole that celebrates minimalism in golf course architecture (the organically rugged greensite is beautifully situated into the hillside above the barranca, after putting out on the brutal par 4 17th hole at the lacc north course you basically throw down a ball & hit a fun flip wedge into the small sliver of a green, there is no formal teeing grounds) that can be played before heading up the hill to the 18th hole

in a town that gotta lotta extra in just about everything, the clandestine bye hole at lacc north is petitely hiding in plain sight so stunning in her natural beauty

glen campbell (former host of the los angeles open pga tournament):

back in the day shocky graduated from the haas biz school & accepted a corporate opportunity with a fortune 500 company in downtown san francisco which wuz fun in a m82 midnite city kinda way, rode the cable car down to my office on california street & sometimes drank too much (wuz not into yoga/meditation then, that enlightenment came later so there's still hope for s&c coach brian johnson) on wild azz friday nights often in the bermuda triangle in the city by the bay

but then took a lucrative transfer to phoenix, did not know a single person...loved the desert lifestyle in the winter but the summers wuz brutal...so in my mid 20s i somehow rounded up the scrappy funds to join forest highlands golf club in flagstaff which is the augusta national of arizona which got average day temps of the 70s/80s in the summer

so show up the 1st day the club opens for the new season on may 1st & the head pro mark johnson (now the general manager of the martis camp club in truckee) tells me he's gonna put me in the saturday morning men's choose up with some wily much older guys who wanna meet the new kid...fantastic, let's do this

so the other 3 guys are jerry colangelo (at that time the owner of the phoenix suns), the ceo of the arizona republic chip weil & glen campbell...they welcomed me in the best way possible intentionally walking in my putting line, making fun of my nickname & offering to hook me up with a suns dancer

anyways after the round campbell graciously invited me to his house at the end of the 16th fairway on the right side with dramatic canyon views of the 18th hole & we later played a couple of rounds at his valley club phoenix country club (he lived at the biltmore)

glen did a lot of crazy **** which is why he moved to arizona where he could focus more on golf/music & not all night parties in the hollywood hills, he didn't really write any of his songs but the lyrics to rhinestone cowboy are pretty autobiographical & help me remember a now passed on golf buddy who lived life to its fullest (but not without regrets too)

https://instagr.am/p/BouB7rthhSs
he would laugh for sure if wuz still alive if i tole him about calveston (we would probably even have a bears recruiting video with campbell singing the above shocky lyrics)

Firing Knowlton should have been in the letter as one her bigger To Do items. Surprised that wasn't in there along with getting Cal into the B1G. Common Carol, these can't be swept under the "other equally important" items. Come to think of it, I pray that she's considering those as important.

My take, pieced together from a variety of sources, is that Chancellor Christ regrets giving Knowlton such a long extension and wouldn't mind it if they could use the McKeever thing to ease him out.

That said, no matter who the Chancellor is, he's still got that contract.

max with a solid 1st round avoiding the big numbers & draining 3 20+ foot putts en route to a 68...colin missed a lotta putts with almost a dozen of them missing to the right of the cup...not sure if they are misreads or just his putter open at impact causing the putts to drift right & once again did not involve his caddie jj on the reads

the monster made a post a month ago wondering why there aren't any interviews with james arthur knowlton, that post has since disappeared but no worries here are my questions & the responses from beth tafolla-voetsch the senior associate athletics director & chief development officer reprinted in their entirety (beth's answers are in italics)

question: I've been told my multiple major donors that Knowlton has been allegedly been told by Jennifer Simon-O'Neil that "for every dollar spent on men's basketball that a dollar needs to be spent on women's basketball," I'd like to get to the bottom of that misinterpretation of Title IX which is not shared by any other University in the nation.

answer: We need to invest in our men's basketball program and our commitment to gender equity won't impact our commitment to a successful men's basketball program. It should be noted, the law does not require us to spend the same amount of money but does require the experience of student-athletes to be equitable. We believe in gender equity and are committed to equitable experience for our student-athletes.

question: I'd also like to know if Jennifer Simon-O'Neil has signed off any academic silver bullet admissions for any incoming women's athletes during the last 5 years and if so how the compliance team is monitoring her potential engagements with those families to ensure there are no Varsity Blues repercussions.

answer: We would ask you to please reference the Cal Athletics Department Policy Manual that we shared with you last fall.

question: Would also like Markeisha Everett's marketing plans for Cal football and basketball, how come both programs are not making inroads in selling tickets with those without a Berkeley affiliation (particularly families) that are priced out of buying Golden State Warriors tixs and with the departure of the Oakland Raiders?

answer: Our pricing model for football and basketball is reflective of the market we are in and we have affordable tickets and payment plans for fans.

question: How are these 2 market share spaces being systematically pursued for season tix/gameday tixs selling opportunities?

answer: We continue to do market research and implement strategic plans to make us competitive in the market.

question: Why does she (Markeisha Everett) still got a 11 person communications team, can the coaches of these non revenue sports not write their own gameday reports which would allow this department to be rightsized to a couple of employees like her peer institutions that don't have Big 10 financed affluence?

answer: Our athletic communications staff has a myriad of duties in addition to writing game recaps and their work helps ensure our coaches can focus on our student-athletes.

question: Has Tom Lowry borrowed any funds either externally or internally from the University during the last year and if so what are the repayment terms for that debt?

answer: Yes, the department has. Please contact the Campus CFO to inquire about the repayment terms for the bridge loan we took from the campus in FY22.

further update: I've asked Beth for a one or two sentence response summarizing the total dollars that have been borrowed from the Central Campus.

question: Was Coach Charmin Smith's contract extended another year like other coaches due to COVID and when does her current contract expire?

answer: Yes all coaches including Coach Smith's contract was extended due to the pandemic.

question: What steps is the Athletic Department taking to reduce costs given the uncertainty of future revenue flow?

answer: We continue to monitor the changing landscape of college athletics and will continue to review and adapt when necessary. We are always looking for ways to increase revenue and hold down costs. Over the past three years, we have instituted hiring slowdowns, temporary pay reductions for coaches/staff, and reductions to sport and administrative operating budgets in order to balance revenue with expenses.

question: Will Knowlton consent to an interview with me?

answer:

as this transparent conversation indicates beth is an exemplary senior employee doing her best in a challenging work environment with both of the department's top 2 ranked bureaucrats currently under investigation by the chancellor's office which will hopefully result in their terminations & potentially even criminal charges

when the con artist & o'neil are walked to their cars, andrew mcgraw will be hired as the next athletic director to bring focus to the revenue sports of football & basketball while downsizing the currently financially unsustainable 30+ sports with beth tafolla-voetsch promoted to the #2 position within the department

the curse of the red baron (shut up, shocky)#
latest update: former air force employee/current athletic department cfo tom lowry is now refusing to share with me in a sentence or two the total amount borrowed by the athletic department during the 2022 fiscal year & the general terms of the repayment

i've made a public records request for this information & also emailed the cfo of the central campus with a carbon copy to lowry requesting this simple information that should less than a minute to share with me

at a time of declining conference revenues/future uncertainty & less projected future donations to the athletic department (dollars will instead flow nationwide to nil collectives) it is financially reckless that knowlton decided to borrow money that will never have the funding for repayment rather than address the real issues of 30+ financially unsustainable sports, non performing coaches like charmin smith and costly buyouts due to his mismanagement of fox's contract & bureaucratic bloat within the department

a tale of two cities:

in pullman they are recognizing the new financial realities & cutting costs as financially responsible stewards to ensure cougars sports can compete in the future

in berkeley the con artist & his trusted confidante "jenny" have instructed cfo tom lowry (former air force employee, his dislike of cal football is apparent within 5 minutes of speaking with him) to borrow money from the central campus which will never realistically be available for repayment (long after they've departed berkeley never to be seen again)

and that's why they are requiring me to submit public records requests, they do not want to transparently share with me (and by extension you) the debt that they are amassing in berkeley

and that's just ****** up

the good news is that the original munger redacted report is not favorable for knowlton & simon-o'neil, the current chancellor investigation into both of them will be grounds for their terminations...u can bookmark this prediction, ok?

the con artist with his $1,300,000+ salary is taking a page out of the larry scott career management playbook...he's not gonna cut any of his financially unsustainable 30+ sports or reduce his hot mess of lazy azz bureacrats, that's gonna be someone else's problem

summer of brokeness (in berkeley)#

coastie, thx for posting the news re: chancellor christ's departure/retirement date of june 2024, the reality is that other than being lied to by the con artist re: the northwestern athletic director position which resulted in knowlton getting extended until 2029 at an annual salary of $1,300,000+, carol is the most athletic supportive (her absorbing the memorial stadium debt by the central campus cannot be appreciated enough) berkeley chancellor of the modern era

right now the con artist's lazy as **** bureaucrats are stalling me off re: my request for information re: the athletic department loans & requiring me to make public information requests (which has been done), they are borrowing money to cover their financial mismanagement instead of cutting costs/eliminating staff & sport teams

so now carol gotta enough time to terminate both knowlton & simon o'neil via the dan mogulof investigation re: their roles in the women's swimmer's scandal

kinda funny that this site sticks its head in the sand & that in the survey on the front page of this site that 7% of 430 respondents think the con artist is basically doing a good job

coastie, keep taking them biz classes, reading financial statements is a skillset as important as correctly reading putts at the us open but that's just my friendly advice of course
