and this team critically needs the energy of the cali disbarred law firm of brown, watson, brown & drayden...while the players respect the head coach & view him as an ethical straight shooter, he is not an emotional leader like coach cuonzo martin & in many ways does not allow people to get too close to him, justin values his privacy...our defensive back coaches bring that necessary joy & fun that's necessary given the rigorous year round demands of college football
Did anyone see Lanning mic'd up before the game, running around and connecting with each player? What a contrast.

cam, let's utilize metrics in evaluating the current staff, ok?

the bears are dead last in the pac 12 right now in both sacks (10) & tackles for loss (30) & 8th in interceptions (8) which is often a function of qbs making poor decisions while under duress

the cal defensive scheme is designed for the d-lineman to engage the opposing offensive lineman & funnel action towards the inside linebackers which is why guys like kaleb elarms-orr & jackson sirmon are national tackling machines in the footsteps of evan weaver & jordan kunaszyk

the sirmon/wilcox bend don't break defensive scheme can work but cannot work without violent production from the outside linebackers...the play of both starting outside backers xavier carlton (3 sacks/4 tfl) & myles jernigan (1 sack/2.5 tfl) has been uneven & disappointing, that's a function of the lack of effective developmental coaching

the olb coach has also been asked to handle the special teams coaching for which he is 100% unqualified as evidenced by the special teams stats

the bears have returned 7 punts this season for 28 yards with a longest return of 13 yards, that's easily the worst production in the pac 12 & probably the nation...while jeremiah hunter got good hands he lacks the quick twitch lateral movement explosiveness of great returners like desean jackson

the bears are averaging 16.63 yards on kickoff returns with a longest return of 26 yards, that's really bad too...the blocking schemes are non existent

the bears punt return coverage is allowing a pac 12 worst 14.47 yards which is a function of both a lack of lane discipline & also low trajectory punts

the bears kickoff coverage outside of the usc game has been abysmal

the bears lost the auburn game because of 3 missed field goals

bottom line, coach so'oto would be the obvious assistant coach to have his contract non renewed after the season due to the lack of results with both the outside linebackers & the special teams units

back in the day justin wilcox wuz a young outstanding linebackers coach in berkeley, it would make a lotta sense to hire a full time experienced special teams coach that 100% understands the nuances of this critical component of the game & for our head coach to assume the responsibilities of the outside linebackers room

by all accounts vic is a great guy but college football is a results based profession for winning programs...kyle willingham is a future hall of fame coach who wins big with good not great recruits because he prioritizes winning football games over any personal relationships with the utes staff...ima not sure justin is wired that way tho, he's a very loyal person which is a great trait in ur best friend/loved ones but not a head coach

cam, there are still 3 games left in the 2023 season but that's how things look to me at this time

Given the above stats, why does Browning, now in his 6th year at Cal, get renewed?

So'oto was a DE in the NFL and coached DL until Cal. I agree he is out of place as an LB coach and especially a special teams coach.

Plough is the TE coach? In an Air Raid?

Two DB coaches?

Just the coaching staff hires and assignments reeks of mismanagement by Wilcox.

Who on the staff is a "great recruiter"?

95, the new breed of collegiate coaches like lanning, lincoln the dealmaker, dilly in old town, mr smith in corvallis, fisch in tuscon & even maddog in berkeley is that they are all kinda like a weird combination of motivational speakers/doggy fundraisers like shocky (if u hand me a $1,000,000+ check written to any maricopa county rescue doggy facility i will arrange a game for u at augusta national)

raising money for nil collectives is the #1 skillset & right now there's panic at the disco in westwood as the nil fundraising for 2024 is drying up outside of troy aikman & casey wasserman (his wife laura ziffren is a berkeley grad) due to the extreme unlikeability of chip kelly whose negative approval rating is about the same as mark fox (something that wuz 100% lost on knowlton when he unilaterally extended his contract)

bottom line, unless something drastic happens (like beating usc) the 2024 ucla nil collective dollars are gonna be significantly less than the 2023 dollars...ruh roh femi & j-mike

the reality is that without sebasabear running the nil program, there's no cal football program in the future...he should not be watching scary azz movies & risk stroking out, got it?

calalum, superstar recruiter jacob peeler usta tell me that defensive line recruiting is the hardest position to find prospective high gpa student athletes that will clear berkeley admissions, ok?...coach browning has done a very good job of recruiting this position & keep in mind the d-line in the wilcox/sirmon scheme is intended to engage blockers (not stuff the stat book) which is a valued nfl skillset...there's a near zero chance that the bears could upgrade the d-line coaching position, andrew is an integral part of the staff

agreed tim plough coaches a small room, my take is that justin thinks if spav gets another head coaching position then the former boise state offensive coordinator could take the reigns

as for 2 db coaches read my above post re: the importance of team energy that non certified cali law firm of brown, watson, brown & drayden bring to the program 24/7/365

but a tough decision is gonna need to be made after the final 2023 game in finding a spot for a full time special teams coach, justin is paid millions of dollars a year to figure this **** out

and if coach wilcox don't wanna meet & actively engage a gazillion potential donors cuz he's not wired that way he always got the option of quietly funneling some of his $4,000,000+ annual salary thru a family member or trusted friend like matt bouza to the cal collective

coach aristotle thompson is successfully recruiting elite running back talent to berkeley, he's pretty special in a lotta ways & coach burl toler is dynamic in building real relationships with prospects...both are great recruiters...and coach bloesch is the best developmental coach on the staff, cal's monster offensive line is getting better every single day, followed by spav with the quarterbacks

Having near-zero history with the ACC teams means I really don't care.

If we are undefeated I'll care about individual games. Otherwise I'll feel like we are in an 11 ooc game season.

lunch time, ur sentiment is understandable but for those of us that are gonna travel (and in my case with golf clubs) to the east coast for new gameday experiences at further afar college campuses/stadiums like miami's sexy fish, boston college's myopia hunt & clemson's death valley which will undoubtably include daddy/daughter meet ups with my nyc daughter taylor (who is tole a couple of time a week she look like madison beer, just once i would like someone to tell me i kinda look like a substitute yoga teacher, is that asking for too much?) the new era of acc football & basketball is 100% more exciting than the tired azz old pac 12 truck stop town roadtrips outside of los angeles

I would be more excited about the potential of the Elarms-Orr and Uluave duo if it weren't for the disturbing 3-4 year trend of almost all of our linebackers reaching their peak in their first or second year here... and then either regressing or reaching a plateau. This also seems to be the case for the cornerbacks and D-linemen. Some of it is injury related, but it is flat-out weird and very concerning.

left to right, jalen "the lefty from ajax" celestine, fardaws "16/11" aimaq, jalen "ivy faithe's daddy" cone, devin "ice in his veins" askew, monty "the dragon" bowser & vladimir "tolstoy" pavlovic

congrats to coach madsen starting a new era of california golden bears basketball with a come from behind 71-66 victory against them pesky high iq/3 point shooting st thomas tommies from freezing azz minnesota

playing basically a 4 man guard/wing rotation with daws as the point center the key to the win wuz excellent ball handling while turning the ball over only 9 times, you can win a lot of games with solid ball security & limited turnovers

the lefty from canada lit it up with an efficient 7-10 field goals & 4-6 free throws en route to an unforced naturally flowing 21 points

fun fact: daws is gonna lead the nation in rebounding this season if he stays healthy...bet

the ugly: devin is still dribbling too much & the bears interior and 3 point line d is still a work in process

tolstoy's shot mechanics still need a little bit more developmental work/refinement but the intellectual plays with a fearless alpha predator competitiveness, yeah jorge would be proud

mark wuz shorthanded a couple of key players tonite but good teams always find a way

^^ why don't wild animals eat human beings like jt & max homa and their spouses in the above instagram?

answer: for reasons they don't make no sense to me, as long as ur in the vehicle (usually a jeep) during the safari drive the wild kingdom creatures view u as part of the vehicle & leave u alone

fun fact: asked a safari guide at mala mala if he's ever had to shoot an animal with the rifle mounted at the front of the jeep he wuz driving, the australian tole me it wuz just a prop to make visitors feel safe cuz if a lion wanted to attack us like an alpha predator there would zero time to stop them from killing us all in a split second

bottom line: watch the outside backer's x man & myles jernigan this saturday at memorial stadium in person (watching on tv is for bobo & doubtful bear) & let's see if they try to violently make plays behind the line of scrimmage, ok?

6956, 100% that the bears gotta start winning during the 2024 debut season in the acc in order to be in a solid position during the next round of college realignment...the key will be scheduling a winnable game for the 4th out of conference game to round out the roadtrip to auburn & winnable home games against san diego state & uc davis...scheduling a tuff 4th game would be a mistake of epic proportions (kinda like the bearinsider.com ignoring the damage created by knowlton to the revenue sports), the a-b-c scheduling formula is outdated as we need to mirror the sec model of a-c-c-d

there is zero chance that coach wilcox is not gonna be the bears head coach in 2024...hopefully justin will replace the underperforming so'oto with a real special teams coach & personally take over the coaching of the outside linebackers room in hopefully developing an apex predator edge defender that can pressure opposing qbs

elite 8+ winning game programs all got dynamic qb play, nando is a difference maker with 6'5" height allowing him to see the field & his quickly developing ability to ascend thru progressions is gonna result in victories, nandomania is a real thing...with all due respect to chase garbers, qb play has been mediocre at best during the 7 year wilcox era, fernando changes the upward trajectory (and the energy) of the program

but that only works with a strong offensive line & coach bloesch is unequivocally the staff's best coach...despite the brutal loss of leader matthew cindric, the night & day improvement of cal's monster offensive line has resulted in a significant reduction in the # of sacks/qb hurries & the bears are now a transformative 3rd in the pac 12 in rushing yards per game only behind oregon & ucla...yeah it's truly pound for ground at the university of calveston

with 13 high school commits & future schollys to starters jack endries & trond grizzell along with the next punter (flipping asu commit/booming trajectory & hang time kanyon floyd is marshall cherrington's best option on the table), there's not gonna be many incoming portal transfers for 2024

monroe young
isaiah ifanse (luv the work he's doing mentoring the jet on & off the field)

barrett miller
matthew cindric (the smartest bear of them all)

beyond these 10 berkeley grads it will be very insightful to see which other bears with remaining eligibility walk with their families during senior day prior to the final home game against washington state on november 11th

transfer portal schollys are gonna be scarce due to the numbers crunch as outlined above, the staff is gonna be surgical in their extension of actionable offers with cal's monster offensive line the clearcut #1 priority along with any potential impact apex predator edge defender

scholly math update:

just to refresh everyone's memories, right now we got 13 2024 high school commits plus 99% probability of schollys being awarded to current starting walk ons jack endires & trond grizzell, that means the bears currently got 15 schollys committed for the 2024 inaugural season in the acc

the number of new scholly players gotta match the number of departing scholly players, got it?

the following 21 players (as of this time, more players might decide to participate in this celebration) are gonna walk as seniors this saturday with their loved ones at memorial stadium, keep in mind that that this don't mean they won't be back for 2024 as guys sometimes walk twice during their time in berkeley

blake antzoulatos: scholly player, eligibility remaining

of the guys walking saturday it's the monster's opinion (and not necessarily of the staff) that it's critical the following scholly players return in 2024: jeremiah hunter, brian driscoll, tj sessions & craig woodson

so let's do the math: there are 10 scholly players in the post above that are out of eligibility & there are 8 scholly players with eligibility remaining who are walking who may not return in 2024 (blake, collin, everett, mason, tyson, isaiah, dejuan & jaedon)...so that's 18 potential non returning schollys plus medical retirement(s), football retirement(s) & portal transfer(s)

patrick mcmorris: scholly player, out of eligibility
tyson mcwilliams: scholly player, eligibility remaining
barrett miller: scholly player, out of eligibility
kenden robinson jr: walk on
brayden rohme: scholly player, eligibility remaining
tj session: scholly player, eligibility remaining
isaiah young: scholly player, eligibility remaining
matthew cindric: scholly player, out of eligibility
dejuan butler: scholly player, eligibility remaining
jaedon roberts: scholly player, eligibility remaining
craig woodson: scholly player, eligibility remaining

of the guys walking saturday it's the monster's opinion (and not necessarily of the staff) that it's critical the following scholly players return in 2024: jeremiah hunter, brian driscoll, tj sessions & craig woodson

so let's do the math: there are 10 scholly players in the post above that are out of eligibility & there are 8 scholly players with eligibility remaining who are walking who may not return in 2024 (blake, collin, everett, mason, tyson, isaiah, dejuan & jaedon)...so that's 18 potential non returning schollys plus medical retirement(s), football retirement(s) & portal transfer(s)

so right at this moment, the staff's roster management math:

18 potential scholly departures minus 15 probable new scholly additions=3 transfer portal schollys available december 4th when the portal reopens for 30 days

scholly math is FUN#

There will be some portal entries from players not listed.

Yes and they will fall into two categories: 1) players who the staff really wishes were staying and... 2) players who came in on scholly, but haven't been too productive, nor shown great potential

A key to our future will be to have a lot more Cat 2 than Cat1
