What is different than Cal, is Utah actually has great football attendance, high TV ratings and decent basketball attendance. Cal appears to be taking a Stanford approach of maintaining all its sports programs and attempting endow all non-revenue sports while increasing funding for the revenue sports. This raises the issue if non-revenue sports are cannibalizing money that might otherwise go to the revenue sports to be more competitive. With that, I will say as many of you know, that I do know the Utah AD, and he has taken action.

Don't get me wrong, for decades I have been a strong advocate for Cal developing its great potential for Hawaii and Polynesian recruiting in general. We are just FAR short of our potential. Love that we landed Sagapolutele. However, going beyond San Jose State and BYU, look at the staffs at schools like UW, Oregon, OSU, UCLA, Arizona, Utah…. even Stanford…. Cal is not unique with respect to Polynesians on staff.

And let's not even talk about the number of African Americans on staff or the fact we have never had an African American head coach and have had only one African American coordinator for one year (until this year?). I honestly believe it is a factor in our poor recruiting. All this despite Cal having had African American students since it's founding in the 1860s, having had the first integrated student housing in the 1920s, being a center for the Civil Rights movement in the 50s and 60s and pretty much founding the anti-Aparteid divestiture movement in the 80s, being located in the first city in the US to intentionally desegregate its schools and being located in the middle of the most vibrant African American community on the West Coast. Our best recruiting in basketball has been with African American head coaches. Yet, those head coaches, and that African American coordinator, are the most reviled coaches in our history by our ever shrinking, ever aging, relatively white, relatively conservative (especially compared to our student body, community and overall alumni) fanbase.

College Game Day and the Calgorithm point the way. We need our athletics programs to reflect our youth, our diversity, our intelligence, our innovation and creativity. We need to stay on brand. "Think Different."

First step is to fire Knowlton. He has always been the antithesis of what we need to lead us into the future.
