He predicts things will get ugly, quickly. However, the weakness of this Auburn preview is that they mention some former Cal players (Goff, Webb, etc.) but no current Cal players. One would think that Jaydn Ott would at least get a mention. Also the fact that Cal did well in the portal and improved a lot of their talent deficiencies.

Article dwells on Cal's past and present offensive schemes too much and, in fact, when talking about our current offense, all they have to go by is what Spav has done in the past.

"Justin Wilcox isn't going to bend the knee." Yeah, like what football coach is? Kind of a dumb thing to write.

I smell a sand bag game for Auburn a la what Maryland did to us in 2008? We had to play in horrible humidity and I recall an early morning game west coast time. We looked out of sorts. Well for Auburn we are starting 10:30pm their time. Hopefully they are feeling a little sleepy by halftime.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of attending that game in person. Jhavid got hit hard multiple times that game, one hit caused him to puke up blue or green Gatorade.

Brutal.

When we motioned him out wide everyone knew where the ball was going. I firmly believe that if we had a better OC and made the pitch to Jahvid outside (with a cut back option) , the staple of our offense, Jahvid would have broken all the Cal records and would have won (at least should have) the Heisman. Just a spectacular talent largely wasted slamming him into opposing lines on first and second down. It is like using your Ferrari in a demolition derby.

The only opponent previews ever worth reading for anything more than entertainment value are very well-researched ones, which unfortunately are pretty rare. This is particularly true in the portal era, where teams' fortunes can change significantly and quickly with good portal classes.

Unlike the Ohio State game, even though for the Tenn game there were tons of Tenn fans, they didn't create a home field advantage. We showed up big and were loud. I hope Auburn will be like that.

No way Auburn has more than 10k fans and Cal less than 30k. Should make it a tie dye game just to mess with them and maybe find some hippies for the trees. Maybe dumpster muffin's available?

Most red I've ever seen in Memorial - by far. More than SC or lsju ever brought, even with championship teams.

What I wonder is if the SEC fan bases still see NorCal as a good "destination" vacation type road trip?? Maybe if they visit the wine country?? I mean don't they see the Bay as a hell hole to be avoided at all costs?? That's certainly the picture their most- consumed media paints. So why spend $$$ to travel here??

Yeah, it was seemed all red that day. I sat in front of some Nebraska fans. They were really nice people and had come all the way fro Omaha for the game. They kept telling me Cal had a really good defense and that they would do good things ahead. Well, that was the era of Vedder at QB and our offense didn't show up at all.
I think we actually went on to beat USC (screw USC) and Oklahoma (at their place) that year but quickly went into the tank late in the season. Ah memories!

I give Auburn fans a lot of credit for having to deal with Alabama fans year-round. That can't be easy.

.The story about Alabama is that when a baby is born their loyalty must be determined and they are given blankets of the appropriate color, red for Alabama or (presumably) blue for Auburn. Is this a real thing or just an urban myth? Well, I don't remember where I heard it but true or not it's supposed to represent the passion of the state of Alabama football fans. Wonder where that leaves the fans of the other colleges in the state. When my son was born and growing up he was suitably attired in Cal, Giants, and 49er togs, and has not deviated from the true faith.

Musgrave's use of Ott, for sure. Constantly, predictably, running him between the tackles on 1st and 2nd down when everyone knew we were far away from having the dominant OL you need to predictably run between the tackles. Strangely he occasionally ran other, slower, less dynamic backs outside the tackles, but Ott did not get those plays until after Musgrave was fired.

If it wasn't for Auburn+SEC Football and you heard where Tim Cook did his undergrad, you'd be like, "Never heard of it." (maybe)

Auburn fans having to put up with Alabama fans actually elevates them. Any other university in Alabama and they'd just be languishing in obscurity.

Yep, probably true. Auburn doesn't have the built-in geographical branding advantage of being named "University of [insert state name here]" either.

I do remember having a nonproductive conversation with a sorority girl at Cal who told me she was from "Auburn." I replied, somewhat incredulously, "Isn't that in Alabama?" To which she replied, even more incredulously, "No, it's near Sacramento," before shaking her head and walking away, unimpressed by my geographic knowledge.

I get the "built-in" branding issue, but I think winning a National Championship in this century, and playing in the SEC (and their respective TV contracts) helps them just fine.
A NorCal sorority girl might not understand the irony of your question, but I can speak from experience, where Auburn is located is not an issue in the SEC footprint.

Wait hang on - the Bay Area is "too hard to get to" from Atlanta, a major city with multiple direct flights to SFO as well as a bunch of one-stop Delta flights to Oakland?

That's even more hilarious than their certainty that Auburn (Vegas win over/under: 6.5) is going to blow us (Vegas over/under: 5.5) out.

Interesting Auburn factoid: Their arch rival Alabama mentions Georgia, Georgia Tech and Tennessee in their various school fight songs. They do not have a fight song that mentions Auburn.

I'm not sure what you could do with that info, but maybe some creative taunting could be done.
