Upcoming Auburn game feels like the Texas games with the disrespect of Cal. Tennessee was different. Sure would be fun to see our Defense shut them down the first half giving the new Offense some breathing room and opportunity to get into rhythm. We have talent!!

Interesting Auburn factoid: Their arch rival Alabama mentions Georgia, Georgia Tech and Tennessee in their various school fight songs. They do not have a fight song that mentions Auburn.

I'm not sure what you could do with that info, but maybe some creative taunting could be done.

I am sure all the Alabama fight songs were written before 1960, when the school known as Alabama Polytechnic became Auburn University.

Auburn's Freshman acceptance rate for the incoming class last year (entering Fall 2022) was about 43.7%. This year's acceptance rate is expected to drop further due to record-breaking application counts.

No, it's not Cal (11.4% acceptance rate), but among the SEC schools, I'd guess Auburn is probably fairly competitive relative to its large southern flagship peers.

Listen to "Dixieland Delight" - Alabama version, and then come back and tell us who Bama's biggest rival is. I don't think Auburn fans are all that worried about Bama's level of vitriol towards them. Auburn folks refer to Bama fans as "Bammers" or "Gumps," and Bama folks call Auburn fans "Barners" due to AU's roots in Ag/Eng programs.

These guys make our Cal-Stanford rivalry look like a nice afternoon tea with crumpets.

Didn't some dumba$s Alabama fans murder the Auburn's ancient oak tree which was a campus centerpiece a few years back? I always thought Auburn people were classier. Met a few alumni over the years and they always seemed nice. I do hope our fans make them feel welcome. I don't want to get ambushed when we go there next year. My SEC experiences have all been top notch thus far, which is more than I can say about Notre Dame (somewhat rude people) and Ohio State (indifferent).

It is a big trip for them. I have a work friend who is a Auburn guy - lives in Atlanta. He is on a few of their alumni boards, former Auburn athlete - he is not coming because he thinks it won't be a game and too hard to get to the Bay Area (and the hotel prices are too high). He says that is a common theme for the guys he is talking to about going.

I think they will have a presence, but I expect like North Carolina had a presence, not like Tennessee.

Wait hang on - the Bay Area is "too hard to get to" from Atlanta, a major city with multiple direct flights to SFO as well as a bunch of one-stop Delta flights to Oakland?
Ever tried flying in/out of Atlanta? Not a fun time.
It's big, but very efficient. Getting through security is, maybe, 8 minutes. Now, leaving Las Vegas is much worse for getting through security (I think I celebrated two birthdays in that line).

I don't think they think of it as a big game, but thinking ain't their strong suit. Go Dawgs. Go Bears!

Okay...okay....you guys got me.

Cal will probably give some of you cannon blue fodder so you can say I'm all wet by going 3 and 0. I can see it now...Cal showing The Mean Green who is really the meanest, then upset Auburn and follow that by murdering Idaho.

This site will scream "bring out the Wilcox statue bricks and make travel plans for the college football championship!"

Then...

then...

Cal will then get chewed up by the disintegrating Pac 12 teams....samo,samo.....

Yeah, I was surprised by the "somewhat rude people" comment about Notre Dame. That was among the least rude environments I've ever been in for a college football weekend visit. We wandered the massive tailgate parking lots just south of the stadium and had multiple invitations to enjoy free beverages and food. If I had any criticism of Notre Dame, it was that people were perhaps almost overly nice. If one more yellow-vested ND usher told me "Welcome to Notre Dame," I might have flipped out, as I was a bit tired from the first 10 times I heard it said.

Curious where @bearsandgiants ran across these rude ND folks? After years of verbal abuse walking across USC's campus before our annual beatdown at the Mausoleum or walking across the bridge over the river towards Autzen while being taunted by some of Oregon's finer locals, ND folks seemed fine.

I received a quite hostile reception from many of the humorless ND fans before the game, even to the point of being kicked. I quite expected it, though: I circulated through the tailgate parties dressed up as the-Stanfurd-Band-Drum-Major-dressed-up-as-a-pregnant-nun, with a sign on my back that said "Kick me hard!".

I will say that a number of the people that kicked me then laughed, helped me up and even offered me a drink, so not all of them are humorless.

There were several "Domers" in my MBA program at Michigan, including my roommate. Invariably nice folks but when they got together, they were a bit insufferable. And to hear them tell it, Notre Dame was academically at the same level as Stanford, Cal, or the Ivy's. Yeah, right.

Yes - Tennessee knew we were pretty good when we went into Neyland in 2006. They were up for that game and we were uncharacteristically (at the time) out of step and overmatched. We paid them back in 2007 at Berkeley.

Auburn fan here coming up for the game. Never been to the bay area before so I am excited about the trip. Found the thread interesting and thought I would give some context on AU.

Auburn just fired the worst coach ever hired in P5 football history IMO in Bryan Harsin. Most will know about the situation so I wont go into too much detail. Roster was in a awful spot. If this game happened last year under Harsin 1.Hardly any AU fans would make the trip and 2. You would beat us by 3 touchdowns.

Hiring Hugh Freeze has been a much needed injection of life into the AU football program and with the portal has really transformed the roster into one that I think can win 9+ games in the SEC. Getting Payton Thorne (QB from Michigan State) in the portal was huge for this team. Our best player is RB Jarquez Hunter. He is a stud and will probably be in the NFL this time next year. Biggest question mark I have for this team is LB. We just lost a big rotational piece in Demario Tolan (LSU Transfer) who sadly lost his mother and sister within a 3 month span so he is moving back to be closer to home.

We expect to win this game. But as of late we have been awful in road games like this. Its a big game for the program as if you want to compete on the field (and more importantly recruiting trail) with UGA and Bama you have to be able to beat Cal. I fully expect it to be a 4 quarter battle.

Side Note: Would love some recs on things to do or restraunts to eat at while in Berkely. Im staying downtown so any recs would be appreciated!

Thanks for checking in with us, Jirao. The Golden Bears should be decent this fall and give you a good game... maybe even pull the upset. Outside of the final score of the game, hope you have a great trip here!

Do you get the sense that there will be a lot of Auburn fans in attendance? (combination of alums who work in the Bay Area and folks making the trip)

Welcome! My recommendations downtown:
1. Comal (upscale Mexican)
2. Jupiter (pizza and brewpub, great.outdoor patio in back)
3. Chez Panisse (up Shattuck, "the Gourmet Ghetto" this is the restaurant that started "California Cuisine" of artinisal French and Italian inspired food back in the 70s.
4. The Cheeseboard Collective (also up Shattuck) another pizza place, collectively owned by the employees since the 60s.
5. Top Dog (hot dogs and libertarian literature, staple of Cal fans since the 60s).
6. East Bay Spice (craft cocktails, Indian food).
7. Ippuku (Japanese izakaya, small dishes to eat whike drinking beer and sake).
8. La Note (French, great place for breakfast).

Game day, the walk up through campus to the stadium from downtown is nice. Go up the Campanile (bell tower) for the views, then either head over to Sproul Plaza for the pregame band show or proceed to Faculty Club for a good stop for food and drinks. Then go up through the Haas business school. Go into the stadium or go get another beer at the International House. The other alternative is to go up or down Bancroft for a taste of southside and see the band perform at Sproul Plaza then follow the band through campus including the Faculty Club, to the stadium.

Bay Area: usual spots for first timers:

San Francisco, Fisherman's wharf (touristy, great sourdough, crab), Chinatown, North Beach (old Italian Neighborhood, Tony's Pizza Napoletana won best pizza in Naples, Golden Gate Bridge.

Marin County: Sausalito (seaside town reminiscent of the Mediterranean), Muir Woods: relatively accessible redwood forest. If you want a GREAT hike, I love Steep Ravine, park at Stinson Beach hike up (and climb up ladders) through the redwoods, ferns, waterfalls to the Pan Toll Ranger Station and then back down to the beach where you can swim (warning, cold ocean), shower, picnic, or swim/shower and then walk into the town of Stinson Beach for food and beverages.

Napa Valley: wine tasting and great food. Most places now charge. Sonoma County is a more causual version.

Auburn fan here. I know nothing about Cal's 2023 squad. I know that Auburn was awful last year. We have a coach known for turning programs around (amongst other things). We have 42ish new players on the roster.

We have a retooled OL. We have a transfer QB that would be third in auburn all time passing yardage. We have a retooled DL but will likely struggle to pressure the QB. The LBs will likely be average. Corners are amongst the best in the country. Safeties are average. RB room is stacked.

Can we put it together on the road, across the country and late at night? No clue.
