Yeah it's shocking that being 29.5 games out of first place in your division will result in your sellout streak ending. The only thing surprising is that it lasted this long.

I'm not surprised. They were good and their current park holds 28,000 less than Candlestick. Stanfurd Stadium holds 10K more than att park.

I suppose being 30 games back in the division is a good enough reason to stop going to games. And that's a credit to the Giants. Most teams' fans would bail out when they get to 20 back. 30 is impressive. Well done, Giant Nation.

Vogelsong may have been better. . . .for about four innings in a single game. He lost more than he won, had a 4.5 ERA. Thanks for the reminder.

Vogey: 3-0 in 7 postseason starts with a 2.92 ERA and 2 World Series rings.
Kershaw: 4-7 in 14 postseason starts with a 4.55 ERA and 0 World Series ring.

For all

Name a pitcher who has been better than Kershaw for the past 5 years.

The best pitching staff in the past 20 years or so that was together for awhile:
Tom Glavine Greg Maddox John Smoltz plus others. Anybody disagree?? The Braves were consistent winners then.

Also, what's actually puzzling to me is that some Dodger fans on this thread think Adrian (or any Giants fan) actually thought Vogelsong was a better pitcher than Kershaw. It really was an epic troll.

Question 1: Over the last 5 years, including thus far in 2017, Kershaw barely edges Scherzer in WAR - 32.8 to 31.3. The last three years have gone Scherzer's way - but again close - 18.6 to 17.4.

Question 2: Without quite a bit of work that I don't feel like doing, I couldn't find the best rotation over a number of years. However, the best single season best 4-man rotation of all-time was the 1997 Braves (Madduz, Glavine, Smoltz and...Denny Neagle).

https://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/31/the-greatest-pitching-rotation-of-all-time/

Quote:

The answer isn’t all that surprising — but the margin of victory definitely is. The 1997 Braves rotation of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and, er, Denny Neagle (hey, he won 20 games that year and was surprisingly really good) has a collective Value Over Replacement Player (or VORP) of 649.4. The next highest-scoring foursome, the 1956 Indians (Early Wynn, Herb Score, Bob Lemon, Mike Garcia) has a score of 562.8. In fact, the rotations that ranked 2nd through 10th all have scores clustered loosely around 500, ranging from 494.7 (the 1970 Cubs) to the Indians

First, you asked about 5 years. Now you've moved it to career. Second, Wins and losses are not very important for a pitcher. Third, while ERA isn't ideal, either, it is better than wins. However, you're comparing apples to oranges because Scherzer pitched for many years in the AL, where it is harder to pitch because of the DH. Since joining the Nats, Scherzer's ERA is 2.68, and his ERA+ is 155 (ERA+ accounts for ballpark - 100 is average). For his career, Kershaw's ERA+ is 162. It's pretty close, with a slight edge to Kershaw, but the more recent edge to Scherzer.

Well the way he was going on and on, and only talking about playoffs, I think he (and some Giants fans) partially believed it.

It's like thinking Luc Longley is better than Charles Barkley because Luc has 3 rings.

They are only 6 games behind the wild card slot, the whole AL is up for grabs whereas the NL is basically West teams (LA, Colorado and Arizona) plus Washington and a tight NL Central race.

6 games back of NINE teams. That seems damn near impossible. I guess if they went on a Doyers-like run?

I think it would be a great idea for Taco Bell to promote the return of both Panda and Sergio to the Giants. They could advertise it as the Sandoval Romo double chalupa.

Two good pieces of news for Dodger fans. Sergio Romo sent to Tampa Bay and three home runs help support a quality start from Rich Hill. He is 4 - 1 in his last 6 starts with a 1.93 ERA.
