I disagree if we get a pro-style coach that it will make the rebuild even longer. The pieces are here to have a decent pro-set team..big offensive line with experience. Solid WR core. Even the RBs here fit the pro-set far more than spread imho. Khalfani is a spread RB...Tre and Vic Enwere are very well suited to a pro-style offense. Offensively we lack a good fullback and Tight Ends..you'd have to hit JCs to fill those in imho.

It's a lot of reports, including KNBR, which says Dykes has "mentally moved on" from Cal.
And that Dykes will only return to Cal "as a last resort"
Where there's smoke, there's fire. He's gone -- and if he isn't, it'll be mighty awkward, especially since he's been making the administraion look bad by his allegaions of lack of support.

Good riddance. Maybe now we can get a real coach.

Yes. Not Tony Franklin though. Maybe it's time for Hue to get his chance. :p

Not being able to keep a winning coach would qualify as a negotiation fail. Not sure why so many think we can do better. At 2.5 mil/ year, there's about a 90% chance we'll do worse.

A Cal football player at the Bears' basketball game against Seattle said he and his teammates have heard nothing from their coaches, who are out of town recruiting.
The player, who asked that his name not be used, said he wouldn't be surprised if Dykes took the Missouri job but that he is focused on preparing for the Bears' bowl game.

Well if he wants to live in that hole instead of the Bay Area all you can say is WHOA NELLIE!

For any Virginia fan who balks at the idea of academic standards being a turn-off, some context. Cal's new standards are going to require that, by 2017, 80 percent of every incoming class of recruits have a high school GPA above 3.0. By comparison, Virginia's standardswhich are still rigorous and well above average in the major conferencesrequire every incoming player to have completed four years' worth of core curriculum classes, as well as meeting the NCAA requirements for GPA and SAT scores. Dykes won renown for turning around the Cal program's focus on academics; 77% of his last recruiting class hit the 3.0 threshold. Virginia would offer Dykes a strong academic environment, but one that isn't as onerous as Cal.

IMO his record should be judged on the last two years. The first year was clearly an aberration based upon circumstances that have been discussed ad nauseum. (Empty cupboard, cleaning house of malcontents and people who could not handle the academics,
Major injuries).
I have worked with a number of Business turnaround experts. All of them negotiate a grace period before their results are judged. The greater the problems are at the start, the greater the grace period.
IMO to be fair Sonny's record should be considered 12-12. 5-7 followed by 7-5. This is not bad and is trending up.

Wouldn't mind seeing him go...
7-20 conference record
Washington St. has shown more improvement with less talent, and we have a potential 1st round QB (yeah, I said it).

I guess my treatise on why Sonny will never smell roses will not be published in January. Anyway, guys if he is gone - we caught a huge break. Now you have to capitalize on it by thinking outside the box. Go young, go aggressive , go where no one else is looking. Head Coach - UW DC Pete Kwiatkowski - currently making 485K. His defenses look pretty good to me. Now look at rushing team leaders past few years. New Mexico after 3 straight 1-11 seasons has made their way over four years to 7-5 running the football. Look at the OL coach - look at the guys he has put in the pros. His name is Lenzmeier and he is making 130K. Have HC look at him for OL or even rushing game coordinator. Then go hire Paul Rhoades to mix in a little gray hair - he can run the defense or special teams. Their kids love playing for everyone of these guys. The two younger guys have bright futures. Remember - a year ago no one knew who Tom Herman was. All of the above is doable and affordable.
Edit- run the ball and play defense. " yes I am certain I heard or read this somewhere"

How has Wazzu shown "more improvement"? Do some friggin analysis first. Wazzu and Cal played the same P12 schedule - except Cal played $C and Utah while WSU played Zona and Colorado. Switch out those two games for each school and Leach goes 6-6 instead of 8-4 and Dykes goes 9-3 instead of 7-5. Where are you getting your information from? Because Cal demands that we play an LA school every year and because of the Utah-Colorado schedule - Leach had a much easier conference schedule this year. So, we give him P12 coach of the year? What a joke.

Hue may be the chick you didn't take to junior prom because you thought you could do better only by senior year she was much better than you and would not go with you even if you asked. Dang Hue. I'm sorry.

I absolute do not think the first year should be excluded. Wilner is right on that point - that team had no business being 1-11. It fell apart early after being competitive with NW and Ohio State. Thats on the coach. Acting like his failure in year one makes years 2 and 3 better is ridiculous.
His performance in years 2 and 3 was roughly expected.
OskiMD;842606941 said:
Great analogy. Let's give him a chance, assuming he hasn't blossomed and gotten himself a better prom date in the meantime.

Love the Hue prom analogy, though I'm picturing it more like "We turned down Hue when he asked us to the senior prom, and now at our 5-year HS reunion, he's in law school and has a hot girlfriend, and we're pregnant with our second kid and working at the gas station."

This. The idea that a 1-11 season (worst in school history) should simply be wiped off a coach's record is crazy to me. I acknowledge that the program had a lot of issues at that point and no one expected a quick fix, but . . . no one expected 0 for 10 against FBS competition (with multiple blowouts) either.
Beyond that, Sonny has basically matched Tedford's record for the last three seasons he was here. So what we fired the last guy for is impressive for the current guy? Let's not lower our expectations so much.
OskiMD;842607018 said:
Of course, Sonny is a genius for setting the bar so low his first season to begin with so that he can only go up.
TheSouseFamily;842607025 said:
The decision to fold against Stanford in order to keep the score close makes a lot more sense now. Sonny is no dummy and managing perception for potential new employers was obviously very top of mind.
txwharfrat;842606915 said:
So ... this essentially says nothing. He either gets a the long term extension he deserves and the School needs to give. Or, he will be a hot commodity somewhere else. Of COURSE this is the situation.

You may recall that very early in the season, Cal had a huge number of injuries so that Cal was starting players who had been 3d stringers at the beginning of the season. And this with a team where the original starters were young and inexperienced to begin with. I guess it was Sonny's fault that his starters were all injured. He should have made them all bigger and stronger and more experienced from January 2012 to September 2013.
And saying that Sonny's performance was "as expected" discounts the pundits and many BI posters who expected 3 wins in 2014 and other pundits and BI posters who expected 5-6 wins in 2015.
Well i guess 5 is close to 3; and 7 is close to 5 or 6. But in each case it is BETTER.
sycasey;842607245 said:
I expected about 7 wins this year. But I thought an above-average Pac-12 coach could/should have beaten those marks. My expectation was based on my feeling that Dykes was merely an average coach.

Yep, looks like that boat has sailed.
Well, to be fair the trajectory for Tedford was downwards while it has been moving upwards for Sonny. Of course, Sonny is a genius for setting the bar so low his first season to begin with so that he can only go up. Whether this fools any top tier programs remains to be seen but seems unlikely. A move to Houston or the like seems much more realistic.
