Still seething over VAR failure in the Germany Sweden game. Not only was it a penalty it should have also have been a red card for Boateng.

The population of Iceland is about 300k, so 120 real players makes sense. By comparison, Oakland is about 400k. Pretty impressive stuff taking on Argentina. Iceland's population is so small, they have an app...to help avoid hooking up with a cousin. The national dish is a corn, rice and cheese dish. The national drink is "Black Death".

My favorite thing about Iceland is how they do their last names. Unlike most places that retain family surnames, they just take Dad's first. ame and throw a "-son" or "-dottir" to the end. Dad's name is Karl and you're a boy? You're a Karlsson. Dad's name is Jon and you're a girl? You're a Jonsdottir. I like that. Nice and simple.

makes it hard to know who your cousins are.

guess that's why there's an app for not dating cousins there.
And if you don't know who the father of your baby is, does the world forever know that because your child is named Katiesdottir? Or ****sdottir?

Ronaldo GOAT. Scored again, Portugal 1 Morocco 0.

Yes he makes things happen at all levels. The GOAT for sure. Messi can only do it at club level it seems like. Hopefully he proves I don't have a clue.
While I agree that Ronaldo is the GOAT, don't forget that Messi put the Argentina side on his back 4 years ago and took them to the final. Messi is the better team player, but if I could choose one player to take over a game, that would be Ronaldo.

As a Tottenham fanatic, I'm really enjoying Kane's tourney thus far. Hoping Dele recovers soon and can join Harry and Trippier in the lineup. Go England and Go Yids!!!

I watched the Germany-Sweden game in the FIFA Fan Fest in Saransk, Russia (it was called Fan Zone during the 2014 Brazil World Cup). FIFA Fan Fest is an outdoor area with drive-in theatre sized huge screen showing the game and with several thousand fans standing, drinking and partying which makes it a very fun place to watch the games (due to the games being in diffierent far-away cities, one would be lucky to catch three or maybe four games live during tge group stage of the World Cup).

Germany-Sweden was a great game. I was extremly happy that Germany won (and I won a dinner bet). I am not sure it was the best in this year's World Cup though.

Do you know that the likely outcome is Brazil vs. Germany in the first knock-out round? Of course, there is one more game left in the group stage and anything can happen.

BTW, many Russians were not happy that Germany scored that last minute goal and won. I guess Russians still remember the WWII. Similarly on tge German side, last month, I was talking to a Getman in Berlin about the World Cup. When I said I hope Germany wins the World Cup in Russia, he said, "We have never won anything in Russia" and he was not talking about Football.

Go Bears!

Good story! I once knew a Polish guy....played basketball with him in DC when we were 20. His dad was part of some international force in DC, how high up I have no idea. He told me that he HATED Germany, that the Germans were his "natural enemy for 1000 years!"
I thought that was something really truly embedded into his psyche culturally. And I understood why.

I have to say, the FoxSports app on my Roku deserves 10 stars!

1. All games are available live.
2. All games are available for replay.
3. The "world cup tonight" show is also available live and on replay.
4. If I click to watch a game which is still in progress, it asks me if I want to start from the beginning or go live.
5. If I click to watch a game that I had already been viewing but had to stop midway, it immediately knows where I was and picks up from that point going forward.
6. I can fairly easily fast forward, rewind, or freeze action. Useful for commercials, replay goals or fouls and study the action technically, or bathroom/food breaks.
7. Unlike ESPN which used to spoil the results of games but showing a picture of the winning shot with the game icon, Fox just uses standard team names and doesn't spoil the resul via the menut. Yes, you could surf thru highlights, but my eye has not yet once gone to that, which seemed impossible on ESPN previously.
8. No constant scrolling news/score feed along bottom. Also does not ruin the game!
9. 90 minutes in 90 seconds highlights available after every game.

I have watched every game, or a few 90 in 90's.
I thought I'd pass on the WC this year due to US absence, but this app has me addicted, and I'm really enjoying it!
Requires signin to a premium cable package. I use my brother's xfinity signin credentials. They don't know or care that I'm 100 miles away (?).

I have decided that in 8 years, I'm getting the Winnebago and going around the US for 3 weeks like this. Stadium, Fanfest, or Sat TV in the RV, my wife can eat **** as I drain the 401k with my soccer coaching buddy. Kids all grown up. See ya! (I jest, she will likely say have a great time and will enjoy having me gone rather than holed up with my sports apps in the basement.)

Right you are, but idiots is a bit severe. How often do we see the team on any sport bunker in on defense when all looks rosy only to have it backfire badly? When they went a man up it almost looked like Germany had gone a man up. Maintain the game flow with an eye out for your advantage, but allowing the Germans on their side of midfield for the last 15 minutes (10 reg, 5 injury time) was absurd.

Although of Swedish extraction, I have to admit Germany the better side.

I understood it bunker when it was 11v11, but the final 10 minutes while up a man, they played to lose.
Sometimes your best defense is offense! Don't just let them get shooting like at an arcade.
Idiots is appropriate in my book.
I have more confidence in the swedes than they did in themselves. Unless they knew they were out drinking and smoking all last week and have zero fitness. I mean, really, it was pathetic.
It was a "who's your daddy?" game.
If you don't like "idiots", how about "*******"? (Starts with p, rhymes with wussies, meant for kitty cats)

The Swedes were like, "oh no, here comes the big bad Germans, we'd better run and hide in our bunker". Take a note from the Mexicans, who counter attacked and brought the attack to the Germans repeatedly!

Yes, Sweden could have been awarded a pk, but still, close the game out, man!

(My ggg grandma came from Germany 150 years ago)

Granted, given what the Swedish formation was on that last fee kick goal, the German execution of the shot was masterful and I did love that!
(Stupid penalty to commit there, however.)

I guess the stupid penalty does translate to "idiotic". The tap back also was very clever giving just a slight adjustment by all defensive players, but that shot was not being stopped by anything short of a "post".

I agree 100%. There were two defenders guarding the German player with the ball. This type of foul is only committed when one is the last defender.

Juarez Bear - Thank you for contributing to the whole "you learn something new every day" thing. I'm neither Jewish nor knowledgeable about EPL history, so I was surprised to see something like "Go Yids!!" So i did a little research (i.e. I googled it) and read a little about the background of how Tottenham developed the "Yid" nickname among both Jewish and non-Jewish supporters. Interesting stuff.

You mean England Goob, there are no "Brits" in the world cup, ever.

England, Mexico, Colombia and Croatia all benefit from being in the easier bracket half. In order to get to the final, France will probably have to beat Argentina, Spain, then Germany or Belgium in succession.

Spain-Russia
France-Argentina/Nigeria

Brazil-Germany
Belgium-Senegal

------------------------

Portugal-Uruguay
Croatia-Denmark

Mexico-Switzerland
Colombia-England

It looks like all the favorites are going to end up in one bracket half. Sure the former group of four I've mentioned are exceeding expectations, but I think they all will be happy with their bracket outlook.

A mysterious mental guru is Mexico's secret to World Cup success

Quote:

The most fascinating thing about Ibarrondo's implementation into the group is that Mexico has been historically resistant to new-fangled preparatory techniques. A "spiritual guide" was brought in for the 2006 World Cup, then disposed of afterwards, ushering in a period where even modern sporting necessities such as strength-and-conditioning specialists and in-house physical therapists were viewed with suspicion.

The best thing about Argentina advancing is more opportunity to see shots of Diego Maradona in the stadium. Wow. Just wow. Dude is a total mess. I'm surprised Argentina even allows that bloated corpse to be trotted out in public.

Great shot of him going full double bird to someone after the Rojo winner.

Very entertaining and exciting game. I love Maradona. He roots for Argentine futbol with every ounce of his soul. Fan is short for fanatic, right? Full disclosure: I may have given the double bird at a sports event once or twice in my life.
My two favorite teams have advanced: Denmark and Argentina.

All of us fans should be as passionate as Maradona and present the double bird salute when the moment calls for it. That would convince everyone else of our level of passion.

The official who used VAR to reverse the offsides call in Korea-Germany gave Mexico a gift.

Absent the VAR having some odd camera angle that we didn't see on TV, the Korean goal scorer was at least a foot offsides.

Even so, Germany didn't score and would have been eliminated with a 0-0 draw anyway.

This will allow the German staff members the time to focus on their FIFA inquiry for their unsporting actions after the Sweden match. I bet they feel pretty stupid now.

It wasn't offsides because the ball was played back by Kroos, a German player, not a Korean player.

Clearly, you didn't listen to the explanation on tv as to why the goal was completely allowable, nor do you understand the rules of soccer. Pure ignorance. This wasn't even a debate or consideration after seeing that Germany passed it to South Korea.

Russians were rooting against Germany. No surprise.
20M Russians died in WW2, even St. Petersburg citizens were starved after being surrounded in city center by German troops.
USA lost about 350k troops and no cities were destroyed.
Our losses pale in comparison. Europe got shelled.

I was referring to this, Tom, see below. Really not that big of a deal but the two staffers did indeed get suspended and banned from the sideline by their own federation for today's match. I like Germany and wish they had advanced but was surprised to see this very unGerman-like behavior coming from them.

And in the grand scheme of things, it's not nearly as disturbing as Joachim Low scratching his marble bag and smelling his fingers.
