Interesting side note: Jorge Gutierrez completely outplayed Lillard in a 20 point win in Berkeley. Lillard was held to 4-17 shooting and only 14 points while Jorge went off for 24 pouts on 8-12 shooting and 3-5 from 3.

I was at that game. Jorge lived inside Lillard's shorts the entire game, though the Cal defense was obviously geared to stop him and help was available. Made me think at the time that Lillard was a bit overrated. In hindsight it might have been that Jorge was underrated, for all the plaudits he got as a defender.

Jorge was special and had to be Monty's best evaluation job for a late add. Or maybe he lucked out.

Monty barely evaluated him at all. He took him mostly on faith based on someone else's recommendation. He has never said that he had any expectations that Jorge would be what he became.

I was at that game as well. Player's can have an off night shooting the ball, or making other mistakes, but Jorge took it to Lillard from the outset, was right in his face, getting in his way, preventing him from going where he wanted to. He got few open looks from Jorge, if any, except free throws. Most of what Lillard tried did not work against Jorge. As Don Nelson used to say, "Basketball is all about matchups."

Sometimes great players have one guy who always gives them trouble, and who they can not shake. Rick Barry was asked who gave him the most trouble, and he said it was Scott Wedman, who was a good player, a good defender, but not an outstanding one. I figure Jorge is a player like that.

My brother-in-law was a shooting guard for Stanford in the early 80s. In 1983 they played North Carolina. My brother-in-law scored 30 and held his man to 12. The guy he dominated that day? Michael Jordan. It happens.

It was way more than just a bad game. He never got off an uncontested shot.

agree. I've seen it a million times. a good or great player gets locked down by someone.

it's a combo of a matchup, type of defense, or other factors such as quickness, strength, size, etc.

regarding type of defense, sometimes a defender gives someone too much space, or sometimes a defender lets a player get too deep a position, or sometimes a defender maybe low to the ground a have quick hands so that killer cross doesn't work against him, etc, etc. etc.

Or Dean Smith gets a lead, goes 4 corners and exploits a different matchup, like Perkins and Daugherty inside against the smaller and less athletic Stanford front line of Reveli, Koberlein and Fischer.

Meanwhile Tom Davis has his team set lots of off the ball picks on Jordan, freeing up his top scorer for open shots.

Makes a great story though. .

Basketball Without Borders 2018

Dimitris Klonaras alongside coach Greg Popovich in "Basketball Without Borders 2018". A very athletic point guard measured 6'6.75''. Has great mobility for his size; able to create a shot for himself or facilitate for others. Capable of doing a lot of things on the court by rebounding, assisting or defending the perimeter. Contains a great shooting form able to hit it off-dribble & as a spot shooter.

I remember the Jorge - James Harden matchups too. Jorge definitely made Harden uncomfortable.

Unless he's slow defensively, I say sign him

Just make damn sure we aren't throwing away valuable 2020 offers just to round off our 2019 class. If you are not a bonafide pac 12 player, then. just use walk-ons and wait for the fall. Fox may be fearful he's going to lose every game next year by 50 points. So----maybe he figures only losing by 35 will buy him some time from the peanut gallery. Spoiler alert: It won't!!

I worry that we're desperately short of shooters. If he shoots well, handles and passes the ball reasonably well, and can be taught to defend tolerably well I think he could help our team, maybe at the SF spot.

Go back and look at his tape. The guy can play. Nice looking shot, too. Not sure about the competition, though. Can he mix it up with good athletes?

Yeah, I'd understand if we took the best 5 grad transfers we could find this year (that can get into a Cal grad program) and saved the scholarships for next year.

That said, if this guy can shoot the 3, I'd take him.

Well, I'd trust Fox and his staff more than WJ if they want to take a flyer on someone.
TheSouseFamily

I agree with you, HD, that he's got some size, athleticism and assertiveness on the floor which already puts him far ahead of guys we've reached on before. With 4 open scholarships. I think it's probably worth it to bring him in and the staff will obviously have seen a lot more than we have. I'm not so sure about the jumper yet though. It's a bit flat-footed in the video I saw and usually when a highlight collection shows a three pointer getting banked in, its not a great sign. But he's 18 and still a work in progress. I say pull the trigger. Plus, the U18 tournament this summer will probably be quality experience for him.

Even if he is slow defensively Cal needs bodies in the worst way. Has that herky jerky left-handed style that is so effective. Can't really tell if he can shoot, but don't care. Good size, good quickness, good awareness, that is enough. I think he would be a good get. I like recruiting internationals where Cal's academic reputation is more of a positive. There has to be a reason why he is not just becoming a pro in Greece.
