duke blue devils 72
california hibernating bears 38

ugonne foul watch: played like a rookie that wuz sped up & outta rhythm instead of a composed mentally focused 5th year senior, all her fouls wuz basically competing for loose balls (which is a good thing) but she fouled out & the bears got their azzs handed to them...make no mistake about it, when onyiah gets into foul trouble the bears r ******

gabby & natalia: this bouncy high energy duo played with heart unlike their sluggish teammates whose body language/frustration suggested they wuz still ****faced from a boozy weekend of nonstop drinking in vegas

turnover watch: yeah the bears r not gonna beat montera middle school with 31 turnovers

next game: the bears (16-3) get a chance to pick up a challenging acc road win on sunday against wake forest (7-10) which lacks the quick twitch +1 athletic with length defenders of duke but need to come out fired up with their smiling splash sisters sniper game faces!!

ncca wake up call: this game 100% represents the problem with finishing the season without a homecourt #4 seed or better in the tournament...finishing #17 or better means the bears will likely win their 1st ncca game & then lose to an uber athletic top 16 team with quick twitch +1 athletic disruptive length on their hostile homecourt

top 16 or go home (is still within reach)#
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?

the wake forest demon deacons only got 1 player that got a scoring average in double digits, 5'9" elise williams gotta 11.5 ppg this season who starts in the backcourt with 5'8" tamia jones & 5'9" rylie theuerkauf who lack the duke length to aggressively cause turnovers...the wf guards are quick tho & average almost 10 steals a game (163 thefts on the season) & will penalize opponents that make dumb azz passing decisions (cross court, etc)

the deacs are not a strong 3 point shooting team (31.4%) other than 6th player raeglyn conley (37.8%) who will require situational awareness/chased off the 3 point line

wake lost to stanford 74-71 so this will be a battle that will require focus & composure, if michelle can stay outta foul trouble/demand the ball around the bucket and if marta & the guards can limit their unforced turnovers thru less dribbling & better ball movement creating open 3 point shooting windows this is a great opportunity to pick up a critical acc road victory & move to 17-3 on the season

and yeah don't forget to SMILE, basketball is a game and is FUN when played with ur friends on a basketball court with a basketball!!

bizarro coaching decision: despite superior height at every position, the bears are making the tactical decision to not crash the offensive boards against the shorter deacs...zero offensive rebounds & zero points halfway thru the 1st quarter

gotta pound the ball inside to the posts & the guards gotta attack the basket off the dribble to capitalize on the height advantage, that will create the necessary spacing for open 3 point shots

wake forest quick to steal entry passes, 5 turnovers in 1st quarter
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
how do you lead 32-24 on the road despite 13 turnovers & 1 for 7 3 point shooting in the 1st half??

DEFENSE wins basketball games, holding the deacs to 24 points with natalia ackerman a spark of defensive energy in the 2nd quarter

gotta bring the d intensity in the 2nd half!!
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?

california golden bears 67
wake forest demon deacons 55

ugonne foul watch: 1st quarter defensively contested entry pass, 2nd quarter offensively pushing off on a defender & 3rd quarter body on body shot contested foul...props to michelle on working hard on her free throw shooting thru the years from a frosh crooked azz (line drives) shooting to a smooth efficient pure stroke as a senior (4 for 4 on free throws)...onyiah's free throw shooting could be key factor in the upcoming heavily contested acc battles with nationally ranked opponents that will likely go down to the wire with last minute free throws the determining factor

natalia: cal poly's grad transfer from the madonna inn wuz the x-factor in this afternoon's victory...ackerman plays non stop motor hustling d with energy & a high basketball iq in anticipating the opposing post's next basketball move...4 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks & a dozen+ contested passing lanes, natalia understands the defensive principle of verticality (and smiling) better than anybody in the program!!

marta: my favorite spaniard is sometimes outta control muy mal & sometimes willing her team to victory que es muy bueno...shocky's can't take his ojos off the fiery team leader, wut is she gonna do next??

lulu & ionna: yeah everybody knows the splash sisters can shoot the ******* basketball but the monster is more
impressed with their with their combined 13 rebounds as part of the bears 45 to 26 domination on the boards

defense: high intensity d wins basketball games & it travels on the road 100% of the time!!

turnover watch: 28 turnovers will result in 30+ point losses against nationally ranked opponents

next game: the 17-3 bears travel to palo alto next thursday nite, all of the team's championship goals are still achievable

the bears dropped 4 spots from #18 to #22 in the ap top 25, the downslide wuz not due to losing to #14 duke at cameron arena but rather due to being 100% uncompetitive in a 72-38 azz kicking

the good news is that the bears still control their destiny in the fierce battle to get ranked in the top 16 at the regular season's end in order to receive a homecourt #4 seed or better for the 1st 2 games at the friendly lair of the bear haas pavillion

#13 north carolina: cal hosts the tar heels at haas on january 30th
#14 duke: bears lost to the blue devils on the road 72-38

#16 west virginia
#17 tennessee
#18 georgia tech: cal hosts the yellow jackets at haas on february 27th
#19 alabama: cal beat the crimson tide at haas 69-65
#20 north carolina state: cal beat the wolfpack at haas 78-71
#21 michigan state: cal played poorly down the stretch vs the spartans on a neutral court in losing 78-72

keys to a stanford victory in palo alto thursday nite:

the bears gotta play lockdown d on the card's leading scorer/rebounder (17.4 ppg & 8.2 rpg) 6'2" nunu agara, michelle gotta stay out of foul trouble & the guards/wings need to help out by collapsing/digging the ball out when agara receives the ball in the paint

make other cardinals try to beat us, this is kinda like florida state with a star player & a good not great supporting cast around her...last time in berkeley onyiah played outstanding d in limiting nunu to 4 of 12 field goals & the bears rolled to a 20 point victory 83-63

DEFENSE wins basketball games & unlike perimeter shooting it can always be 100% counted on to travel

california golden bears 75
stanford cardinals 72

ugonne foul watch: moving screen (leads the nation!!) & a hack on a driving card in the 1st quarter resulted in 2 quick fouls & onyiah only playing 6 minutes in the 1st half...3rd quarter foul defending near the bucket & a 4th quarter defensive assault again on a stanford guard entering the paint (bear territory)...once again natalia ackerman in michelle's absence wuz the x factor in the bears victory!!

timeouts: yeah charmin needs to work on her to's, running across the midcourt & making physical contact with a ref is probably not exactly tara textbook coaching

kayla: her heart is bigger than her body & she plays as physcial (but with way better perimeter shooting) as cade uluave!!

marta & jayda: do not **** wit these 2 bad azzs, they set the physical presence/steely demeanor of an elite defensive team...yeah shooting can come & go particularly on the road in hostile venues further afar but lockdown d travels & DEFENSE wins basketball games!!

lulu: let it fly, lulu, let it fly!!

ionna: her legit range is somewhere a couple paces past mid court, krimili is berkeley's own caitlyn clark!!

lola: plays lockdown d with quick twitch +1 athleticism, gotta really strong handle with very good passing skills/decision making & most importantly is an ice in her veins hawaiian warrior in clutch moments...no moment is is too big for donez, would like to see lola attack the basket off the dribble with her superior athleticism

turnover watch: 18 turnovers (but remarkably only 1 by the entire bench!!) with the majority of them coming late in the 3rd quarter when stanford went to their full court press which trimmed the bears 19 point lead to almost a michgan state kinda tragic loss, defeating the press needs to be the absolute #1 area of focus during the next week of practices...yeah making dumb decisions will result in a **** position

next game: will the cal FAMILY/the greater bay area basketball community show up next week at haas pavillion for the 18-3 california golden bears acc home games hosting #13 north carolina on thursday & pittsburgh on sunday??...is coach wilcox gonna make one of these games a football program bonding event (charmin, u need to call justin tomorrow & extend a personal invitation to him & his team)??

That clip showed Jayda at the end. Thats a small sign she was not seriously hurt

Their small guard was like a bowling ball just shoving, throwing elbows, crashing into players

I'm glad refs finally figured it out that she would hurt someone, but it was too late….she did

Stanford bigs were doing the same thing. It was first time I remember seeing Michelle get after it with a player

100% hoops, agreed it wuz a very PHYSICAL game with blows delivered by both teams!!

the key call of the season wuz the 5 minute video review by the refs on the play jayda (charmin said in the presser she thinks noble is fine) got injured, after the lengthy & discussion by the refs they made the call to award the 5th foul to the stanford bowling ball point guard & give the bears 2 free throws which extended the lead to a critical 4 points

if the refs had not called the foul, the cards pg1 would still be in the game in only a one possession game & could've derailed the entire season with another michigan state kinda collapse away from the friendly confines of haas pavilion

some fans will think the refs got some bizarro personal bias & that's just delusional homer paranoia (the bears r NOT some kinda victim here), this wuz a coach cuonzo martin kinda knife brawl growing up in the hole in east st louis, nothing more

this tight & FUN team don't make excuses (anymore in michelle's case thx to this monster thread), it just COMPETES & finds a way to win...excuses r for losers, this is a SPECIAL team that deserves more fan support!!

I was at this game sitting right behind the north basket on the court. What a fun time it was. And my gosh - my first WBB game....less flopping, less foul calls, and just as intense as the men's game. First sweep of Stanfurd since 1986 - so glad I witnessed it.

Okay Shocky, you give us this message after every game, we get it. The point I want to make is that even though it's a physical game, I thought that move (foul) was bush league. As I mentioned in another thread, it looked like a roller derby move. Nothing wrong with being agressive, but a play like that shouldn't be tolerated.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?

redless, so here's the deal, college women's basketball at the top 16 in the nation level is becoming increasingly physical with better conditioned/stronger +1 athletes taking advantage (sometimes violently) as alpha predators knocking the **** outta candy azz soft weaker competitors, got it?

stanford's shay is a ******* mma dog just like marta & jayda!!

only aarp aged white people think today's women's game should be some acrobatic ballet like it wuz a decade ago & are shocked by the brutal nature of the collisions & as a result think there's some bizarro delusional paranoia bias that the refs aren't "protecting" their team from the meanies...u need to get over it, the game has changed & that kinda play is now only tolerated by the refs but also the norm for top 16 programs

every bears game with top 16 elite teams (yeah stanford may not have the athletes this season but they still got the mentality, luv their bulldog pg1 who plays to ******* win) is gonna be extremely physical, got it??

let's be real here, the cal wbb program has been really bad except for last season & therefore didn't get opponents best efforts in destroying the bears by 20-30 points on a regular basis & then playing their relatively non athletic subs for long periods

the good news is that the bears (with the exception of michelle who needed shocky's coaching up her up) know this simple fact even tho the white aarp segment of the fanbase is slow to catch on, marta suarez compares herself to warriors bad azz draymond green...if u wanna see non **** u up wbb go watch santa clara vs utah state or something with a bunch of non athletic non mcdonalds all american hoopers

honesty those complaining about the refs are being disrespectful to the aspirations of the california golden bears women's basketball program to become a perennial top 16 program, to become the hunter not the hunted

get ready for thursday nite against them #13 north carolina tar heels, it's gonna be a bloody ******* war & the mentally most resilient team is gonna have an advantage

and yeah if u wanna yell at the refs the whole game that the heels are not playing nice with them bears that's ur choice, berkeley is a place of free speech & self expression

As I mentioned in another thread, it looked like a roller derby move. Nothing wrong with being agressive, but a play like that shouldn't be tolerated

Shocky, with all due respect, your response to what I said here went completely overboard.

You went into the whole rant about how the game has changed, don't criticize the refs, aarp aged white guys, etc.
I would appreciate it if your reply to my statement pertained to what I stated, not what you think I implied. I acknowledged that the game is physical. I didn't go into any evaluation of Shay's game, You responded with a drawn out post comparing her to our players. I simply stated that that one individual move of her laying a freakin' HOCKEY HIP CHECK on Jayda was BS. YES, the game is physical, but when a player goes over the line of trying something like that, it needs to be CALLED OUT. I don't care who the player is playing for. Really man, I know the game is physical, but when you watch a basketball game, do you really want to see/accept a BULLSH*T move like THAT. There's a limit to everything, and as a fan,( white, black, yellow, old, young, male, female, trans, straight, gay) if there's something that should be called out, I'm gonna do it.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
redless, back in the day shocky wuz invited to an asu donor dinner with rubber chicken or something, the guest speakers included the school's president & then asu wbb head coach charli thorne turner (stanford grad) who when asked wuz the sun devils toughest opponent said basically that yeah her alma mater with tara at the helm wuz the best program on the west coast (if not the nation) but that the most banged up recovery days wuz after playing bloody beatdowns with cal

charli said with admiration that berkeley wuz building a culture of controlled violence on the court with legit dogs like devani & that wuz the program she feared the most going forward...an urban sleeping giant in the basketball hungry san francisco bay area

so no shay's hip check on jayda wuz not a dirty move & that's why a technical foul wuz not called, it's a physical basketball move in 2025 & that's how the game is played by programs in the top 16 in the nation...if that bothers u, that's ur perogative but that's not gonna change the evolution of women's basketball in 2025

fast forward to now coach charmin is assembling a rugged program of fighters, 2025 california golden bears basketball is basically a mma battle with lockdown d that showcases spectacular downtown 3 point shooting but don't kid urself it's the sometimes violent physicality of the bears DEFENSE that got this special team to 18-3 and OFF TO THE RACES!!

Shocky, I understand your point, but again I was only talking about one play and now you're giving me something that Charlie Thorne said years ago. With all due respect to her, does the validity of her statement perpetuate indefinitely?

Again my opinion, I realize some of your posts here are correctly intended to put a limit on some of the usual pro Cal bias' that pops up here. But please, don't overcompensate. In the Wake game you tried to make a point that Michelle "knocked the **** out of the Wake post and then laid the ball in for a bucket, no call." Watch it again, completely inaccurate take, the fact is Michelle was actually receiving a pass when she and the Wake defender met simultaneously, that's why no foul was called. Please don't try to categorize some of us posters by our statements. I for one always welcome your opinion on any statement I make, positive or negative, but please in the future try a little harder to reply to the statement itself instead of putting it and me into a category.

Shocky, I guess at times your approach/intentions are just a bit too deep for me. Regardless of what your original intention of this thread may have been, the fact is, it still enventually evolved into a group discussion, similiar to just about everything else on this site.

Since you've disclosed that this thread will close at the end of the season, my guess is there's still more time for more to be said here. My only request is, that responses are based on statements made and avoid speculative conclusions about what else the poster might have meant, and refrain from stereotyping the poster based strictly on the statement.

That being said, let's hope Michelle and the rest of the team are ready to play to their ceiling level against UNC. Go Bears!

north carolina scouting report

physicality: another acc mma battle with pushing, shoving & 30+ violent collisions that sent players from both teams crashing to the floor...none of the participants complained (other than a quick head shake) to the refs

tar heels interior defense: this will be the best coached most fundamentally sound d the bears have played this season, the heels posts consistently utilize the principle of verticality & then swallow the ball like a hungry python...just textbook d!!

tar heels full court defense: unlike duke, nc lacks across the board quick +1 athletes...north carolina didn't try to full court florida state other than a semi loose full court defender on the ball handler bringing the ball up

tar heels offensive: the posts do a good job of setting up shop really down low in the paint allowing point blank shots around the bucket...bears guards/wings are gonna need to sag & help onyiah stay outta foul trouble by denying entry pass windows to the heels posts

intangibles: this wuz a bitter hard fought loss for north carolina in front of their home fans on a sunday afternoon, they will need to now regroup & fly across the country in order to battle with the refreshed/fresh legs bears next thursday nite at haas pavillion...big advantage for cal if a big loud crowd shows up for the 18-3 bears!!

fun fact: north carolina is the worst free throw shooting team among the major conference teams...big advantage for cal down the stretch in a tight game
