It's been pointed out that Cal outscored Oklahoma by .2 this weekend. Im not one that knows how the rankings are scored but I imagine the gap between 1&2 is gonna be really tight.

There is room for improvement with Cal so can they legitimately take down Oklahoma right now? Maybe. Let's see how the rest of the season goes. First win the PAC 12 conference outright and then let's see how this plays out.

Go Bears!

Cal still #2 ...I'll see if I can find the scores. I'm sure Cal closed the gap with Oklahoma this past weekend. Mya Lauzon down to #2 AA.

Week 3 the gap between Oklahoma and Cal was around .5 (roughly rounding up). And Week 4 the gap between #1 & #2 is down to .3. Cal topped Oklahoma in team score this weekend. Cal needs to break the 198 meet score to really bridge that gap even more.

Cal is in a tri-meet this Friday against ASU and #1 Oklahoma this Friday at 6 pm!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how Oklahoma ended up at this meet. But wow what a match #1 vs #2.

ASU is the host and will be streamed via Pac 12 feed.

The meet is on Pac 12 Insider channel. Click on link for ways to get that channel. I'm not sure it will be streamed via Pac 12 website.

Pac 12 Network is so lame. But then again I suppose they didn't think Cal would be #2 team in the country. But you would think they would be able to flex it onto the Pac 12 network.

I think the P12 Network issue may be basketball games. Although all are 7 p.m. Pacific/8 p.m. Mountain, so not a complete overlap.

Horrid coverage of this meet.

Cal with a huge 49.525 on bars! Go Bears! Beat the Sooners!!!
JTfromClash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sooners on floor 49.650 ...they are up on Cal. ASU behind them. Onto second rotation.
JTfromClash

Oklahoma with a subpar vault! This is Cal's chance!!!!!!

Oklahoma with huge bars score. Yikes (but wow)
JTfromClash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Cal led after second rotation. But Oklahoma goes nuts on bars 49.825 and Cal with a good but not great floor. Any other meet and Cal would have a shot at the Sooners but that bars score was nuts. Too bad this TV coverage is awful. They kept cutting away from Cal's floor routines. Can't say either way if their floor scores were on or not.
ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Frazier with only 9.85 on floor. And 49.435 team.
OU takes a .200 lead.
Cal to vault where OU scored 49.25
OU to beam where Cal scored 49.575

Bowers crushed floor and bars for OU
JTfromClash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Cal finishes with a huge 197.950. but they gotta crack 198 to make a run at the gymnastics natty. Plenty of time to work on their routines. Very good showing. Oklahoma will know who these Bears are!
ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Cal gets the 49.425 to make up the .200 on vault and high season score of 197.950
But OU gets the win with huge beam and 198.375

Also the coverage was โ€ฆ not good. I know it was an ASU broadcast but you could have showed more of the top two teams in the country
JTfromClash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The coverage was embarrassing. Not sure why they couldn't provide a second camera. And like you say show the other teams more. Cal got the least airtime.

I watched the entire meet and taped the women's basketball game at midnight. I'll watch it tomorrow.

The coverage was amateur hour at its finest. They showed ASU as 1st priority with Oklahoma a strong second. For some reason they seldom showed an entire Cal routine for long stretches.

Both Mya Lauzon and eMjae Frazier failed to perform up to their potential tonight. Both scored in the 9.8s rather than scoring over 9.9 in every event. To beat Oklahoma, they'll likely have to do that... Cal's performances on the beam and the parallel bars put the team in the lead. The underwhelming scores on the vault and floor exercise events will not be good enough to upset Oklahoma.

The Pac 12 website is going crazy over Utah's team score in beating Oregon State. Cal's losing team score was superior to the Utes. Andi Li doesn't seem to possess the ability to score in the 9.9s anymore.

Cal outscore Oklahoma on vault. And Floor is Cal's lowest ranked event.

Frazier only "underperformed" on floor with 9.85, her low score for the year and only event last night where she didn't score 9.9+. Her vault and bars were high scores for the season. Her beam was her third consecutive 9.925. (So, it wasn't the 10 of the second week, but also not the 9.6 of the first week. Frazier was second in the all around to Bowers. (Bowers balanced out her 9.8 on vault with that 10 on bars)

Lauzon's bars was her lowest score of the season and only event under 9.9. But she has only had one 9.9+ this year. He floor was her third 9.925. And while her 9.950 on beam and vault weren't her highest scores, they are pretty darn high. Lauzon tied for third in the all around.

Oklahoma was a beast last night. It was their highest score of the year. They are ranked first in bars, beam, floor and drop to second in vault. They are beatable if they have an all around off night. Last night, their vault wasn't stellar, but they crushed bars. And their floor and beam scores were higher than the Bears. Yes, Cal needs to get into the 198s to challenge - and there is time and room to grow!

ncbears-I realize that Cal tied their high score of the season. I was stating that if the Bears have to throw out scores of Frazier & Lauzon, they are not going to upset #1 Oklahoma

Apparently Andi Li is working back from an injury in the off-season. I think she will start hitting some 9.9s.

Ella, Kyen, Jayden and Jordan are all relatively new to the rotations. They should improve as well.

When it does come to the Utah, UCLA, PAC 12 championships, and the NCAA championships, the stalwarts of Mya, eMjae and Maddie will need to continue putting up big scores.

You do want the team to peak near the end of the season. The fact they were able to hang with Oklahoma is a real good sign.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

Cal still second and Mya Lauzon still #2 AA

Gap between Oklahoma & everyone else probably got wider. Time for the focus to be on capturing the PAC 12 season title outright, then the PAC 12 championship meet, and then see where Cal is in a few weeks in terms of the national title picture.

Utah and UCLA not too far back.

Looking through the rankings - several programs have put up 198s.
#3 LSU 198.475
#1 Oklahoma 198.375 (and averaging 198.045)
#8 UCLA 198.075
#10 Michigan state 198.050
#21 Ball state 198.025
#9 Denver 198.000

Cal has the seventh highest score this season of 197.950
But, Cal has to be able to score 198, which they certainly are capable of doing.

Andi Li is capable of scoring a 9.9+ every time she steps on the floor (or bars, or beam). She has completely reworked her bar routine with a new (sky high) release this year, as well as her first tumbling pass on floor and (incredibly difficult) turn sequence. Her scores will come. Beautiful gymnast. I felt her bars was underscored constantly last year. She remains a critical part of this team.

Mya and eMjae are the gifts that keep on giving. National treasures. We all (myself included!) get real greedy with those near constant 9.95/9.975s/10s! As even Oklahoma showed on vault last Friday night, it's impossible to be "perfect" or near to it on every single event, each and every weekend. The women are still working on perfecting their routines - it's so much more than "just" a stick.. it's finishing their half-piroutte on top of the bar, hitting those handstands.. etc. I was able to see eMjae's double layout landing on floor at ASU Friday night which had zero deductions. Interested to see where the tenth and a half deduction was taken, since they cut away.

This team has upped its difficulty even with a smaller number of gymnasts than other teams (LSU, etc). Each of the gymnasts has such potential and star power. The underclassmen are improving while the upperclassmen continue to produce.
The fact that Cal had FOUR vaults with 10.0 start values in its vault lineup on Friday night was super exciting to me. That's a HUGE gain for these ladies as they keep working to refine form and landings.

So, so fired up for the team this year. Technique, form, presentation and difficulty are all there. So exciting to see how well they are already doing, knowing they have yet to reach their full potential!! Go Bears!

Please post more! You know much more technically than most of us. Very cool to read from those well versed in gymnastics!!!

I hope there is a crowd for Sunday's meet. Real unfortunate that it is on Super Bowl Sunday.

I totally agree with Andi Li. She's a must watch on floor and bars especially.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ugh not a good meet so far. They are down .2 to Zona.

They are really missing Lauzon.

Heading into final rotation. Cal is gonna have to put big floor numbers.

JTfromClash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And Cal does! 49.600 on floor. Cal wins and preserves its quest for the Pac 12 title.

Lots to work on. If one of the big 3 (Frazier, Williams, or Lauzon) goes down, can the others pick up the slack? Looked like a mixed bag today. Andi Li was solid today and she was needed. Mayhew with a 9.95 on floor.

Go Bears!!!

Cal 197.125-196.850 the definition of a "squeaker" in gymnastics.
ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Didn't watch. But, Cal wins 197.125 to Arizona's 196.850. Second lowest team score this year. Cal could drop in the rankings depending on how others did this weekend.

Looking at the scores - what the heck happened on Beam? Cal had been ranked 3d in the nation, but ...
Li 9.875 (avg 9.821 so a positive)
Williams 9.625 (avg 9.812 - so , ugh)
Cesario 9.7 (avg. 9.771 - so, ugh, but less than Williams)
Frazier 9.95 (likely save the meet!) (avg 9.88 so YAY!)
Perea 9.45 (dropped)(avg 9.804)
Aderinto 9.825 (avg 9.825)
Kane 9.775 (first score of the year)

But next week, Cal gets another chance against Oklahoma (also 13 Arkansas and 30 Washington)

Mya Lauzon is the heart 'n soul of the team. Cal won't go far without her. I didn't watch today because of softball, women's basketball and the Super Bowl.

Cal stays at #2. That's with Mya Lauzon sitting! Gotta feel way better about yesterday's meet now. Coaches gambled to have Mya sit (not sure why she sat) and younger gymnasts were able to get valuable experience.
JTfromClash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
To expand on what gymnasts stepped in for Mya's turns & where the scores fell a bit short:

Rotation 1 - Vault:
Casey Brown 9.8 certainly not Mya L. but a solid score to start and if everyone else does what they normally do this was very good spot Casey to have gotten more experience.
Maddie & eMjae 9.825 both. Here is where our typical high scores dipped. Don't think it is anything to worry about just an off day. Not bad scores just not up to what they usually do.
Although I didn't see this event, it seems like Andi Li was suppose to do an exhibition routine. Is she possibly gonna start doing AA? Or maybe an indication that Mya might have an injury? but Andi was pulled and didn't perform.

Rotation 2 - Bars
Andi Li - 9.875 ... starts off the rotation with a very good score and you expect Bears on Bars to go smoothly with an upward trend. In 3rd spot, the Gabby P scores a 9.725. I didn't see this event either so don't if she fell but definitely some miscues. eMjae 9.850 not her usual higher score. Maddie almost goes perfect 9.975. Casey Brown is the newbie to the rotation sans Mya L and does a 9.850. Again a solid score but not a Mya L score. But had everyone else dEone their typical Bears on Bars no issues. Not a bad rotation 49.375 but this is at least a 49.4 with Mya L in there. Oh Miki A. does a 9.875 exhibition. Lots of depth here

Rotation 3 - Beam
Andi Li - 9.875 to start off. Another great leadoff score. Then uh oh .. again i didn't see this rotation but ...
Maddie - 9.625 dunno if she fell off. Everyone else has to pick her up score.
Ella C - 9.700 again not sure what happened. First time Cal will have to count a low score all season
eMjae - 9.950 rebounds from her subpar bar routine for a much needed huge score.
Gabby - 9.450 not a good meet for her. She's capable of a 10 every time she does beam with her side dismount.
Miki A. - 9.825 with Cal reeling at this point, they really need a good routine and Miki does so and does so in filling in for Mya L. Huge long-term in gaining experience. Jordan and Kyen both do exhibitions. Really tough rotation with Cal falling behind Zona.

Rotation 4 - Floor
Maddie - 9.875 i did watch this rotation live! Great score especially after her rough beam. Great way to lead off
Jordan - 9.925 She is the new floor specialist! and she delivers. Exactly the momentum Cal needs to pass Zona.
Ella - 9.875 Another solid score and good routine. She might have been underscored.
Kyen - 9.950 Boom! The 5 star freshman showing why she is so highly ranked. Bears overtake the Cats. This would be Mya L's spot so she did as well as you probably can expect anyone filling in for #2 AA.
Andi - 9.990 another underscore in my opinion. Andi was solid this meet. Delivering the type of scores you expect from her. This clinches the meet.
eMjae - 9.950 she doing eMjae things on floor!
Cal needed a huge floor rotation and did exactly that. huge score of 49.6.

All in all, these Bears faced adversity for really the first time all season. Yes they have lost before but that was to the big dogs of gymnastics. Here they were without their leader and bigtime star Mya L. Even the other two superstars Maddie & eMjae struggled at times but both provided huge scores at other events. Andi Li showed her experience by being the steadiest gymnast all meet. Kyen, Casey and Miki were the Bears gaining experienced and while they didn't score Mya L scores (except for Kyen on floor) they contributed to the victory.
