I don't know if he was recruited by Cal or not but the "beardown" is part of a UofA slogan coined within the last year or so. Nothing to with Cal.

Great kid and a good swimmer, but being out of state makes him a worse value proposition than others still on the board.

How much does "value" come into play anymore? Both teams seem to be able to recruit out of state without worrying about $. Cal doesn't have the "foreign legion" anymore, we are recruiting domestic swimmers for the most part.

Bear Down is UofA's fight chant and the name of their fight song. Been around since WWI era.

Guess this leaves only three Top 20 women recruits who haven't yet verbaled:

# 2 Abbey Weitzeil
#11 Aly Tetzloff

While we are anxiously awaiting Abbey's decision, thought I'd put together a rough list of who has verbaled to which school on the women's side, up to this point in time (14 Oct 2014). Sorted by NCs standings last season, with the team points scored in the Div 1 championship as <# pts>. Have also underlined those who I believe to be out-of-state recruits, with internationals in italics. May have missed or mis-categorized some there...

Swimswam's Top 20 rankings are denoted by (#): http://swimswam.com/top-10-recruiting-rankings-girls-high-school-class-2015/

The remainder who didn't make Swimswam's list are ranked according to CollegeSwimming's (erratic) system, with a {#}: http://www.collegeswimming.com/recruiting/

Please let me know whom I've omitted or got wrong.

Missing a large number of top 20 collegiate programs though! Well after a while I kinda gave up the laborious exercise of going thru a whole bunch of those Swimswam recruiting articles as was developing a bit of a headache lol

Interesting to compare our current 3 verbals to UofA's 10, which is then trumped by SC's 13 - how can these 2 afford so many, do they have a bunch of $$ graduating seniors?? But as has been pointed out by more than a few of you here before, quality over quantity... btw NCAA Champs UGA with only 1 commit so far...really??

UPDATE: A big thanks goes out to icecream12345 for having compiled a list for the men over there on the "Michael Thomas commit" thread! I'm much more challenged when it comes to the men's swim team, but am (hopefully!) learning from all the the experts here

Swimswam should eventually come out with a well researched and more comprehensive analysis on the top 2015 recruiting classes by college programs, but probably not until after NLIs are basically signed.

Very useful summary, UAC. And yes, the Georgia results likely are due to the NCAA probe into allegations regarding Bauerle's role in academic fraud. Despite the large classes at Arizona and USC, the poor to middling recruiting results for Georgia, Florida and Texas mean that after March 2015 NCAAs (where Georgia and Stanford look to be co-favorites), the next several years will be Bears vs Cards. Where Weitzeil settles has yet to be factored, but she would be a great get for the Bears to help offset the Card's amazing freestyle group.

Could you please do the same for the men :-)

Others on here can provide their more informed take on this, but AFAIK, Abbey hasn't been linked to the farm or appear to have made a trip there. Probably between us, Zona and UT at this point, with SC having a long shot at best, but I could be wrong! Hopefully she's being sensible and steering clear of UGA for now, at least while the whole Jack Bauerle situation remains in flux...

Perhaps there's some intense behind-the-scenes negotiations taking place that's holding up her verbal, either to do with full vs. partial ride scholarships or whether a program can give both her and Cole what they are looking for. I'm in the dark as much as most of us here!

LSJU had six female recruits on campus last weekend (photos all over Twitter). Five of the six have committed. Dunno who the sixth recruit was, but it's not Abbey or Aly Tetzloff. Abbey's getting a full ride wherever she goes. Cole's probably not getting a full ride and there may be another higher ranked recruit ahead of him at Cal or UT. Don't think that would be the case at 'Zona or 'SC.

Agree with dgong's astute observation that post-2015, it's all about Cal and LSJU. Even if Jack Bauerle gets exonerated and reinstated, Georgia's squandered an entire recruiting class when they're losing 9 swimmers (several studs) and are two-time defending champs. That's a huge step backward. Abbey's not going there or to the farm.

Ledecky and LSJU hoped to jump start their recruiting with an early commit. They got an excellent class, but didn't quite catch the Bears' current commits. Ledecky's a no-brainer, who potentially can set NCAA records in three events and swim on two relays. Eastin and Stevens are studs who would have helped the Bears, but can't contribute on relays for either Cal or Stanford. Kim Williams is a great girl, but Teri didn't recruit her because she already has Pelton and Li and was recruiting Baker and Eastin. West Coast swimmers who end up on the farm don't take recruiting trips to 'Zona and 'SC because they're better academic, coaching, and swim combos than Cal. Albertoli is hardly an unknown to Teri since she swam with McLaughlin and was coached by Katie's mom in high school for 2.5 years. Non-scoring NCAA sprinter who can't help on relays, Toris clone. Doesn't really matter if they add the mystery sixth recruit who is outside of the top 20 and wouldn't contribute immediately to LSJU or Cal.

'SC is a huge mystery. 'Zona's added a ton of recruits because they were in complete disarray, especially on the women's side. Lost their coach mid-season and had a tiny roster. Salo's situation appears stable from the outside, but he got shut out on all five top 20 recruits from SoCal and it doesn't appear that any of them even visited. 13 recruits in a single class isn't a show of strength. Pretty clear that he's planned on some level of attrition since not all of them will swim all four years and/or graduate from 'SC.

Missy took a recruiting trip to Texas, but didn't follow her then-high school boyfriend there. Ryan Murphy's high school girlfriend, Smacker Miles (LSU football coach Les Miles' daughter) swims at Texas. Caroline Piehl's long-term boyfriend swims for Georgia. Abbey and Cosgrove may indeed be a package deal, but she also could be helping him leverage his options. 'SC no longer has room for Abbey, but they could probably still go to Cal, 'Zona, and maybe Texas together.

Seems like Teri's universe is now down to Abbey, making a run at Siobhan if she misses on Abbey, or waiting until Spring for a transfer or an international. Once the dust settles on Abbey/Siobhan, she probably still adds 1 or 2 high character, low maintance, low $, good student, good teammate in-state recruits.

Thanks for your informed recap and well-rounded assessment of the recruiting situation, BearDevil! Always a gold mine of interesting tidbits to go along with the solid facts which helps to ground my frequently unrealistic or excessively optimistic expectations & hopes lol

However it turns out with the Abbey/Cole scenario*, it's been quite an entertaining adventure following this year of outstanding recruiting talent. I'm just very humbled and excited at the same time to be privileged to witness and participate (from our armchair perspective hehe) in the roller-coaster ride along with you all!

Katie Ledecky, the #1 recruit of 2015 and future face of Team USA (along with Missy, of course), dashed a lot of programs' hopes really early on by committing to Stanfurd before coaches could even start their recruiting efforts officially. In spite of this undeniable and intimidating headstart, I agree that LSJU has yet to fully reap the fruits of their multiple WR recruit's announcement, or capitalize on the potentially scary momentum from their superstar recruiting class of 2014.

Cal has instead been the proud beneficiary of verbals from the awesome #3, #4, #5 trifecta of Kathleen Baker, Katie McLaughlin & Amy Bilquist, not to mention being on #2 Abbey Weitzeil's short list.

#3 Kathleen Baker

#4 Katie McLaughlin

#5 Amy Bilquist

Teri & Kristen have done a really incredible job, even when judged against their own fantastic track record and past accomplishments :acclaim:

* IMO if it came down to choosing based solely on the fit, team bond, academics, coaching approach & reputation, being in serious contention for the national title at NCs and prepping for the Olympics down the road, etc., there can only be one choice However, in the real world, I guess that factors such as finances, politics, relationship consideraions, parents & friends' influences will come into play.

Alyssa Marsh's boyfriend is the one going to Alabama. Was news in the swimming world because her dad, David Marsh, swam at Auburn (with Rowdy Gaines) and coached Auburn to 12 NCAA titles (7 men's, 5 women) before becoming the CEO at SwimMAC. More importantly he hired and mentored Dave Durden, married a former Cal swimmer (Kristen Burke), and steered Alyssa's close friends/SwimMAC teammates Maija and Kathleen to Oski's University. To paraphrase Shocky, Papa Marsh ain't no dumb azz.

Solid & versatile swimmer (#9 according to CollegeSwimming) but not on Teri's radar.

Ella who was recruited is a better IM'er in yards - for example, Eastin has a 1:55.58 vs Sydney's 1:58.15 (200 IM), and a 4:05.25 vs. 4:19.13 (400 IM).

http://swimswam.com/distance-standout-sandra-soe-verbally-commits-ucla-bruins/

Soe's the kind of recruit I had in mind. Just outside scoring at NCAAs in the 500 and 1650 as a high school junior and not fast enough to swim on the 800 free relay, so not prohibitively expensive. High school teammate of UCLA's Linnea Mack, but added relatively late so she may have been waiting on Cal. Not blaming Title IX, but there's too much scholarship money in women's basketball and swimming. It's why Durden can land in-state guys like Sand and Takahashi for not a lot of money and why UCLA can afford/has to overpay for someone like Soe.

Traded some recent messages with same source who told me about Baker, Amy, and Seliskar earlier:

-Teri's still waiting on Abbey. Abbey has her final visit scheduled next weekend to...'SC. Cogswell assumed to be tagging along too.
-Didn't appear there was much contact between Siobhan and Cal before she committed to Michigan.

-Durden will still add a few locals/in-state guys, but looks to be out of cash to land another major stud.

Take it for what it's worth. Somebody well connected in swimming, but no direct ties to Cal. When I was told that Baker was coming to Cal, it was because that's what everyone associated with the men's program believed. That's why I was so shocked when Seliskar committed. Men's team thought he was headed to the farm, so things either went very right during his visit to Cal or very wrong on his visit to LSJU.

Really appreciate your sharing your source's info and your take on the recruiting scene!

Does this imply that #7 Cole's off the books for Dave, or do you think a top 10 in-state recruit like him or #10 Alex Valente would be willing to take a significant hit in their scholly offers to become part of the NCAA champs team? Trojans already have recruited #4 Carsten Vissering & #6 Patrick Mulcare, so snagging Cole would be a major scoop for them, I'd imagine.

Still holding out hopes for Abbey committing to the program that's the best fit for her (i.e. us haha), guess the whole situation should be sorted out shortly after her final trip to USC next weekend!

btw, enjoy the SoCal sun (see below), but I think you're going to love the smog-free climate even more up north :p

Still don't get how 'SC is adding 13 freshmen and may still have room for Abbey. They may be using all financial aid with minimal swim money, but still think that's way too many swimmers in a single recruiting class. Would be really messy if they had to jettison a few marginal commits to add Abbey.

Bear Insider comment: "Hey hands off Abbey. She's already part of tedbear's dream team, so none of that nabbing or poaching business please." lol

Hehe if there's a like button, I'd suspect BearDevil would be the frontrunner for all of his informed takes and inside scoops... :acclaim:

Followed closely by you for starting this topic, and coming up with the "dream team" which has attracted 24,000+ views to date - not too shabby for a tiny board like ours that doesn't have anything to do with football or basketball

btw, continuing with those Swimswam vs. Bear Insider comments:

Swimswam comment #1: "Rumor is Weitzeil is narrowed to AZ or Cal….too bad"
Swimswam comment #2: "Cal and U of A are the perceived frontrunners for Weitzeil"

Bear Insider comment: "Cal is the actual frontrunner for Weitzeil in real life" lol

("2015 Men's Swimming Recruits" thread)

#10 Recruit in Men's Class of 2015 Alex Valente Verbally Commits to USC

This is the point in time where BearDevil states that there is no way that SC has enough $$ to afford Cole, ice-cream changes his gut feeling that Cole will now go to Cal instead of SC, UAC finds more evidence on twitter that Cole and Abbey are liking Cal related swim photos, and I shout out that the dream team is still alive . Hahahaha!

+1 :rollinglaugh:

However, in the spirit of NOT_SwimSwam, NOT_SwimmingWorld & NOT_MichaelAndrew, here's what NOT_UAC would probably post...

*Just unearthed this news-breaking tweet from Abbey

*Dave Salo, the entire $C swim & football team, all 13 freshie commits, Rebecca Soni & Jessica Hardy & Ariana Kukors all like this ❤️❤️
Jessica Hardy: Nakey @abbeyweitzeil?
Abbey Weitzeil: @swim_hardy strapless
kendyl stewart: so cute! excited to see you this weekend!!!

* = that part didn't really happen btw :p

On a more serious note, would this be the descending order of program preferences for these 2 studly recruits? (for Bears faithful that is, not necessarily for the pair in question lol)

Abbey -> Cal >> UofA > UT > USC
Cole -> Cal >> UofA > USC > (Auburn) > (UGA) > Michigan > (Florida) > UT

Does that imply UofA have basically given up on their pursuit of Abbey, by taking on their 11th commit in Ali, even if she may be relatively low-level? (and an out-of-state sprinter at that)
