I've compiled a list of the scoring potential in the sprints/mid-distance freestyle events (big factor for relay selection) of our incoming baby :bear: + a few 2016 prospects, in relation to those of the current team who will still be around for 2016 & 2017 NCAAs.

Freshman class for the NCAA season in question (whether real or wished-for hehe) have their names [U]underlined[/U]. Personal best times that were achieved prior to 2014 have the recorded year in parenthesis.

Alright then, after scanning the above list, I can now clearly see the errors of my ways hehe. Will happily concede that Moseley appears to be the more valuable recruit over Drabot if we can have only one of the duo, based on Stanzi's recent time improvements and also being a less costly ride thanks to her in-state status. So definitely on board for Stanzi's unequivocal inclusion in our [U]2016 Dream Team[/U]

Still would like to have Katie recruited to complement Stanzi if we can afford her in the overall scheme of things - she's close buddies w/Amy & good friends w/Kathleen, looks like she'll be a great fit with the team, and will surely improve her times considerably between now and March 2017! :cheer

Sincere thanks for the kind words, UAC and for all you and others add to the board. Looking at potential relay components is the way to go. Missy doesn't have an A cut in the 50 this year, but there's no question she'll be part of the 200 free relay. Would expect that Teri will mix and match the top 6 or 7 potential relay swimmers in different combinations during Pac-12 duals in order to figure out which combo/order works best. She may juggle the order at Pac-12s to have someone on the bubble (Bing, Acker) leading off, but she'll have multiple data points on her preferred line ups well before NCAAs.

Stanzi definitely swam well last weekend, but it's also worth noting that she was fully tapered. She's home schooled, so she doesn't have to worry about year end high school meets. She also swam LCM time trials after the meet to make her Olympic trials time cuts when she was fully tapered (made it in the 100, just missed in the 50).

Many Midwestern states (Wisconsin, Indiana) have Fall high school swim seasons, so swimmers like Bilquist or Drabot who swam in Doha after their state meets or Weitzeil and Eastin who swam in Doha and a national meet mimicked NCAAs better since they had to hold a taper longer or taper twice in a short period of time.

No worries about Drabot not being in the mix. She's already expressed her interest in Cal. Pretty safe assumption that Marsh and Mykkanen are also interested. Still conjecture at this point about Cal interest from Stanzi, Mann, Horejsi, and Allie.

With Jack Bauerle back at Georgia, think Teri has to add a few other potential distance recruits to Becca Mann. Georgia loses a few middle distance/distance scorers (McDermott, Mattern) after this season that they didn't replace and loses MacLean after next season. Mann's club is a traditional feeder to Georgia and middle distance/distance is the heart of their program, so they'll go after Mann hard.

Teri will still have Cierra, but she didn't replace Klaren's and Breed's potential points in the 500 and 1650 (Breed). Additionally LSJU addressed their distance weaknesses by adding Ledecky and Stevens.

Don't have any names in mind, but Drabot becomes an even bigger priority, especially if her scoring range can extend up to 500. Bears should still have enough depth that they don't necessarily need a another 200 scorer or relay swimmer, but they do need at least another scorer(s) in the 500 and 1650.

FEDERAL WAY – Abbey Weitzeil couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion to two weeks of racing, claiming her first American record in an individual event today at the Speedo junior nationals with a 46.29.

Swimming leadoff for Canyons Aquatic Club’s 400 free relay, Weitzeil took down Simone Manuel’s four-week-old record of 46.62 from the Art Adamson Invitational. The high school senior slashed nearly a second off her lifetime best, which had been a 47.59 from last March’s American Short Course Championships.

Weitzeil turned at 22.29 at 50 yards, which is .21 faster than Manuel’s split in her American record swim. Weitzeil came home .12 faster than Manuel as well.

This has been a banner month for Weitzeil, who was part of a world record-setting 200 mixed freestyle relay at the short course world championships in Doha. Her anchor leg of 23.25 helped Team USA win the event and post a 1:28.57.

Weitzeil now turns her focus to the national high school record books, where she already owns the records in the 50 and 100 freestyles from this past May with times of 21.98 and 47.82.

FEDERAL WAY – Abbey Weitzeil has transformed from being a sprinter to watch into the fastest American swimmer in history, all in a span of about six months. When she broke the American record in the 100-yard freestyle Saturday night, she put herself into the history books in a big way and made the southern California native’s future in the pool a bit brighter.

Weitzeil’s 46.29 was significant in many ways when viewed in a historical perspective. Here are five facts about last night’s swim:

1. Abbey Weitzeil was the first to set an American record at the USA Swimming Junior Nationals.

We’re used to seeing national age group records fall by the truckloads at juniors, but no one imagines that they’ll see an American record fall. Weitzeil waited until the final women’s event to stun not only the crowd at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center, but the entire swimming community.

2. She’s the third swimmer to set the 100-yard free American record on a relay leadoff.

Tracy Caulkins was the first to do it at the 1979 nationals with a 49.03. Natalie Coughlin did it twice at the NCAA championships, first in 2002 and again in 2003.

3. She’s the 17th teenager to own the record.

4. She’s the fourth female and fifth person to simultaneously own an American record and national high school record in the same event.

5. Weitzeil would have beaten the men’s 100 free American record of 46.50 swum by Steve Jackman in 1963

Oh, also the other Erin who went on the 2014 Asian leg of the World Cup tour with the Junior National Team - Erin Earley...not sure if she's a 2016 or 2017 recruit tho?

Looking further forward to the [U]2017[/U] class, we have Courtney Harnish, Sierra Schmidt, Madison Homovich (amongst others) for your consideration.

Here are their best times from my quick research, which I've referenced against current Cal bears Cierra & Catherine. Keep in mind that many of these high schoolers have yet to hit their primary short course taper meet for the season (usually March 2015), and there are very few data points for NBAC swimmers who tend to focus more on long course.

More relevantly in the shorter sprints, you're less liable to have to swim against the churning backwash & waves generated by the high-kicking swimmers in the adjacent lanes when you're in lanes 1 or 8, especially in the men's sprints.

In Abbey's case however, I don't think being in an outside lane made much of a difference either way - she got in front of the rest of the field pretty quickly and therefore didn't have to worry about shock waves from adjacent lanes, all the more impressive as she didn't rely on massive underwaters to gain the advantage...her demonstrating this sort of killer speed in the actual swimming portion on the water bodes well for the long course pool and ultimately for the Olympics!

Thanks, UAC. Good stuff. Erin Earley's 15, so don't think she's a 2016 recruit. Teri likes versatile recruits, so Becca Mann, who can help in the 400 IM or Erin Voss (200 back potential) would likely be her top choices for a distance recruit.

Brynes is a high school and club teammate of LSJU's Janet Hu. 2016 is a banner year for Wisconsin swimming, but there are lots of rumors of dissension within the Badger program, so doubt ex-Cal asst Whitney Hite lands Drabot, Beata Nelson, and Jernberg.

Lots of good distance options for Teri since she needs an additional 500 and 1650 to complement Cierra and keep up with rivals. Bears are really deep in the 200 free, but a distance swimmer who could also crack the 800 free relay line up would be a bonus.

Interesting 2017 ties: Harnish (club teammates with Szekely), Schmidt (club teammates with Cierra/Pelton, Mann, and Michigan's Gillian Ryan), and Homovich (from Raleigh suburbs, probably knows Maija and Baker).

For the experts among us... is there anything about Abby's swimming style that is revolutionary? I know she has a straight arm recovery but is that practice in common use?

Not an expert but believe straight arm recovery technique's not that frequently used, and when it is, almost exclusively in the sprints. Believe it requires more effort & energy esp on the recovery to propulsion phase, so is a bit of a balancing act when it comes to judging whether it's more efficient to apply this stroke, or save up this extra energy instead in order to have the reserves to finish up the race strong. Also can put more strain on the shoulders and other parts of the body. Not a revolutionary technique though. Will the real swim experts please pipe up if I'm sprouting any nonsense here :p

Anyhow, male elite sprinters appear to adopt this stroke more readily than their female counterparts. An example of a straight-arm swimmer is French Olympian & Auburn alumnus Fred Bousquet. Our Nathan Adrian will often switch to this stroke in the last 15m or so of a 100m race. Michael Phelps tried it briefly back in 2009 when there were excited talks of him focusing more on the sprint events, but the experiment didn't work out so well for him and Phelps quickly reverted to his typical bent elbow stroke.

On the women's side of things, Jessica Hardy is a prime proponent of the technique, and I think I've seen Natalie do it at times but not usually for the entire race. Interestingly enough, Janet Evans' unique windmill stroke seems to have been a variant of the straight-arm recovery, albeit she's a distance swimmer not a sprinter.

Really fun stroke to watch for its sheer display of power as the sprinter thrashes his/her way thru the water, loved watching all those videos of Abbey showing off this technique! Personally though I'm more an admirer of Aussie Cate Campbell's long, languid & seemingly effortless strokes as she glides on top of the water, leaving all her opponents behind in her wake (more for its pure aesthetics than anything else hehe).

Wow! You're amazing, Ursus. Thanks for the time you spent answering my question. Now I have some swimming homework to do.

With the caveat that I've only watched Abbey swim a couple of times and never watched her swim in person, I don't think she's doing anything revolutionary with her stroke, breathing, or kicking. As UAC noted, the straight arm recovery is neither new nor universal, but it is reasonably rare. She does look fundamentally sound in her starts and turns, but she's not a textbook perfect swimmer like Natalie or Shields. Abbey's relatively tall (5'11" or 6'), but she's not as physically blessed as Missy, Manuel, or Bilquist. Know it sounds cliche, but she does seem to have the same motor/iron will that Natalie, Ledecky, and Missy have. Also seems to be an even better relay swimmer than an individual swimmer like Megan Romano and that bodes well for college swimming. Seems to be equally adept at SCY and LCM formats.

Surprisingly, Missy still isn't completely fundamentally sound. Her starts, turns, and walls are still a little sloppy and her underwaters aren't great. She's so physically blessed and such a ruthless racer that she can win despite those flaws. Hopefully Teri will be able to clean some of that stuff up when she has more time to tutor her individually before Worlds and the Olympics.

Some of the same things apply to Bilquist. Amy may not ever be an American record holder, but I think she has the most upside of the 4 incoming superstar freshmen. It's not like she's been poorly coached, although her coaches did her no favors last Summer by swimming full programs at Juniors and Seniors back to back. Jut think that Baker, Katie, and Abbey don't have any obvious glaring weaknesses.

The Carmel High girls’ swimming and diving team is not a newcomer to accolades, having won 28 consecutive Indiana state titles, but 2014 was a particularly incredible year for the Greyhounds. The swimmers, largely made up of members of Head Coach Chris Plumb’s [U]Carmel Swim Club[/U], rewrote nearly all the school records, a large chunk of the state’s records, and three national public school records.



The Greyhounds didn’t just rule the waters in Indiana; they dominated the national landscape as well. Carmel broke all three national public school relay records. Two of their individual swimmers had two national top-ten times each: Amy Bilquist (50 free, 100 free) and Claire Adams (200 free, 100 back). Moreover, no one could match the Greyhounds’ depth; Carmel individual swimmers and relay teams placed in the top 100 in the nation 20 times. In addition to Bilquist and Adams, six more swimmers had top-100 swims: Veronica Burchill, Alex Clarke, Hanna House, Sammie Burchill, Haley Harris, and Kendall Smith.[/COLOR]

The second day of excitement in Oklahoma City started out with a solid win by 17-year-old Mission Viejo Nadador Katie McLaughlin in the women's 200y freestyle. She led the field off in a 51.63 opening split, with Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics' star Karlee Bispo right on her heels. McLaughlin was able to seal the deal and wrap up the race in a winning time of 1:45.04, just .33 ahead of Bispo's 1:45.37, but behind McLaughlin's own 4th-place-time of 1:44.95 from the Minneapolis Grand Prix. McLaughlin now owns the second and third fastest 200y freestyles for 17-year-olds in the country, behind Katie Ledecky.

McLaughlin doubled up on top-of-the-podium finishes tonight, as she also earned the victory in the women's 100y butterfly. Her time of 52.46 would have earned her third place at this year's Winter Nationals, yet McLaughlin's time tonight is on par with where she was at the OK Elite Meet at this time last year (52.34, 52.66). McLaughlin now owns the third fastest 100y butterfly time for 17-year-olds, in addition to her number one time of 52.27.

Concluding the night were the men's and women's 400y freestyle relays, where the Mission Viejo Nadadores came away with the women's win in 3:23.72, anchored by a blistering 48.39 split by Katie McLaughlin.

The above video shows how little Katie stays underwater coming off the walls, that's why she's known as a "long course swimmer". In this instance, her strong skills & technique on top of the water more than made up for her opponents' advantages from their staying longer under the water, as she powered to yet another win. Hopefully Teri will work with Katie on her underwaters next year, as that would help develop her into an even scarier force to be reckoned with in collegiate swimming...JMHO

Some of the same things apply to Bilquist. Amy may not ever be an American record holder, but I think she has the most upside of the 4 incoming superstar freshmen. It's not like she's been poorly coached, although her coaches did her no favors last Summer by swimming full programs at Juniors and Seniors back to back. Asia may have less impressive stats compared to Claire's, but does have faster times than both Courtney & Alyssa. As BD has pointed out though, stats aren't everything, nor arguably even the most important factor in the complex recruiting selection process...

Matt Whittle sure gets around...

Another potential recruit with ties to Whittle is Chenoa Devine. High school and club teammate and based on her 500 and 650 times, she looks a little underrated/undervalued. There's always the debate about which superstars to add, but the next cut is which in-state recruits can the Bears add and develop (Ladd, Jenna, etc...). Devine's probably in that class. Maddy Murphy and Moriah Simonds might be in that category too, but their times/skills don't necessarily match up with the Bears' needs and they'll be offered more money at other schools with greater needs than Cal. As Teri's team becomes deeper in sprinters, she can augment her efforts in middle distance and distance by finding lower profile in-state locals.

The men's team heavily relies on in-state recruits because they can and have to with less scholarship money. It's no coincidence that Cal, LSJU, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, and Florida are swimming powers. LSJU's endowment is so large that they can offer generous financial aid to recruits with family incomes below $100K and use their swimming scholarships for recruits from wealthier families. Georgia has Hope scholarships that allow them to bring in in-state recruits with a 3.0 GPA for free and to spend scholly money on out of state recruits. Cal, Florida, Texas, and Michigan are flagship universities in large states who can bring in local recruits cheaply. Cal marginalizes that advantage by going after out of state recruits in areas which aren't absolute priorities.

It's also not entirely dependent of what recruits do this season, it's also dependent on how much current members of the team improve too. If Marina and Li become 200 breast scorers, that need disappears. A faster Mau in the 100 back helps. As noted, Beata brings a lot to the table other than the 100 fly, but Teri can't completely ignore what she has in the fly already when she needs to allocate additional resources elsewhere.

There are a lot of good back options who can help in other strokes, which complicates decisions on Mykkanen and Marsh. Teri will recruit both and would be glad to have them, but they'll probably have to accept less money to come to Cal.

Kinda think the ship's sailed on Emily Eastin. Had a disasterous Jr Nationals and Bears have better options already in the pipeline. Think she's headed for the farm.

Bears are so stacked in the sprints and strokes that only a handful of recruits nationally can offer immediate help. Thanks for running down some CA options. Of those, Devine and Kampfer look like they could help the Bears in the 500 and 1650. Wouldn't be immediate NCAA qualifiers, but like Grima, Ladd, and Campbell might be able to help the Bears later in their careers.

Interestingly enough, Canyons' B team actually finished ahead of the A team in 2nd place, despite Abbey's [COLOR="#FF0000"]54.62[/COLOR] lead off being by far the fastest backstroke split in the entire field! (next fastest was SoCal's Aislinn Light whose [COLOR="#FF0000"]56.06[/COLOR] helped her A team to the win)

[U][COLOR="#006400"][SIZE=4]200 free[/SIZE][/COLOR][/U]: Abbey swam the fastest time this morning in a time of [COLOR="#FF0000"]1:44.64[/COLOR], beating her old [COLOR="#FF0000"]1:45.49[/COLOR] PB by a considerable margin!
2nd top prelims time was a [COLOR="#FF0000"]1:49.04[/COLOR] from Moriah Simonds.
Abbey did scratch finals, which was won by Kenisha Liu in a respectable [COLOR="#FF0000"]1:47.69[/COLOR] (her old PB was 1:49.15).

This should basically cement the [U]200 free[/U] as Abbey's 3rd individual race @ 2016 NCAAs, to go along with her [U]50[/U] + [U]100 free[/U] where she'll likely be vying with Simone Manuel for the national title. Further confirms Weitzeil as a serious contender amongst the half a dozen studly :bear: jockeying for a spot on the [U]800 free relay[/U] next season. Great news here is looks like Bears will remain pretty deep in this event, even with the key losses of AR holder Missy, along with Caroline, Camille & Cat.

Abbey won't swim on the 800 free relay since she's by far Cal's best option in the 50/100, so she'll swim 200 free, 400 free, and both medley relays.

Katie's stronger in the 100 fly which is directly before the 200 free, so she probably skips the individual 200 free, but will be in the mix for the 800 relay. Baker's schedule is even more complicated: 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back are all back to back. Bears will have multiple scorers in the 200 free and 100 back, so Baker probably swims the 100 breast.

Abbey, Cierra, and Acker will swim the 200 free since they don't have another possible third individual event.

Oops had completely forgotten about the 4 relay max limit @ NCAAs...so yup, Abbey won't be featured in the [U]800 free relay[/U]. Think there's quite a bit of upside for Cierra & Abbey getting faster in their [U]200 free[/U], so look forward at least to their invaluable contribution to the individual event in this area (and additionally to the relay in Cierra's instance).

[COLOR="#800000"][SIZE=4]The Signal's most important and influential SCV sports figure of the year[/SIZE][/COLOR]



There was a mini-panic.

Word slipped out.

Abbey Weitzeil made her decision and did it through social media.

But her high school wanted to give her the proper pomp-and-circumstance party that goes with an elite athlete revealing their college commitment.

The school wanted to set her up at a table with blue cloth draped over it. The school wanted her to sit in front of cameras and reporters and faculty and students and sign a sheet of paper that would act as a stand-in for a letter of intent. The school wanted to celebrate her and have her represent the school.

Certainly her club team wanted her to represent it in a similar fashion.

Instead, Weitzeil chose her own path in November.

She took a photo and posted it on Instagram. The caption read: "After a very tough decision, I have decided to become a Golden Bear! Super excited to join the Cal Family! #nationalsigningday #gobears."

It makes perfect sense that Weitzeil avoided a signing day tug of war, though it wasn't her intent to exclude anyone, when she committed to Cal Berkeley.

She represents more than a high school and a club team. She represents an entire Santa Clarita Valley.

And in 2014, no sports figure better represented it than the high school senior and Saugus resident.



Weitzeil was born in Valencia.

She moved at 7 years old to Sacramento.

At the age of 9 she began swimming for parks and recreation.

When she moved back to the SCV at the age of 13 she would have continued to swim for a parks and recreation team but she recalls there were none around at the time.

The United States swim team might be thanking the city of Santa Clarita one day for that oversight.

Weitzeil joined Canyons Aquatic Club instead and literally took off.

Before she even swam an event for Saugus High School, she qualified for the 2012 Olympic Team Trials.

Coming into 2014, she was already one of the most decorated high school athletes in this valley's history.

As a freshman she won two CIF titles and set nine Saugus High and four Foothill League records. She won two CIF titles as a sophomore and broke more records.

But 2014 was a monument for all American high school swimmers.

At the CIF-Southern Section Division I championships, she swam a 100 freestyle time of 47.91 seconds the fastest ever by an American high school swimmer. Her 50 freestyle time of 21.98 seconds also set a U.S. record.

That's two more CIF titles.

Then came her summer vacation.

In July she was named the Division I State Girls Athlete of the Year and State Swimmer of the Year by CalHiSports.

In August, Weitzeil qualified for the U.S. national team.

That same month she was in Australia holding a koala and petting kangaroos. (She actually did both).

And she was there to compete.

She helped the U.S. 4x100-meter freestyle relay team earn a silver medal at the Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. She was the youngest member of the relay team that included Olympic gold medalists Missy Franklin and Shannon Vreeland and fellow teenage superstar-in-the-making Simone Manuel,

On Dec. 3, she celebrated her 18th birthday with a piece of cake in her hotel room in Qatar.

Two days later at the FINA World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar, she swam the second leg of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay and swam the fastest 100-meter split in U.S. history at 51.57. Her team finished second and swam the fastest relay time in American history at 3 minutes, 27.70.

She flew back to the United States (a 35-hour flight including stops) and spent a day at home before flying to Washington.

Swimming for Canyons Aquatic Club on Dec. 13, Weitzeil broke the American 100-yard freestyle record in her leg of the Women's 4x100 yard freestyle race at the 2014 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

She broke Manuel's record from Nov. 22 of 46.62.

Weitzeil's mark was 46.29 seconds.

Weitzeil says her biggest accomplishment of 2014 was making the U.S. national team.

It might have also been handling a tsunami of pressure.

The lightning-fast 46.29 swim was performed as the lead-off on her Canyons Aquatic Club's 4 x 100y freestyle relay, with Weitzeil's new mark comfortably clearing the 46.62 from Simone Manuel from November.

Not sure how well the long course performances of these over-achieving recruits translate to the little pool (don't have much SCY stats for a number of them) or whether they'll even address our team's particular needs & fill some holes for the upcoming cycles, nor do we know whether the out-of-staters'd be willing to accept less than a full ride - Teri will already have her hands full with the A-list prospects previously mentioned on this thread (the thread which seems to never stop growing lol)...

Wouldn't read too much into Olympic Trials cuts. Anyone who can contribute for Teri's teams will have qualified for Trials. Impact recruits project as NCAA scorers as freshmen. Those are the recruits who Teri will offer sizable scholly money (instate or not). She's on a treadmill now where her teams contend every year, so she has to look for immediate scorers. She can bring in longer term plays (ie NCAA scorers as upperclassman), but she won't spend much on them and they'll all likely be in-state unless they have some compelling ties to Cal (legacies, club/high school teammates at Cal, Pac-12 footprint, really good students).

Pitzer, Madden, Cain, Edelman, and Kovac are all 2017 out of state recruits with no discernible ties to Cal. Teri still needs to figure out what she has in her current freshmen at Pac-12s and NCAAs before she begins to think about 2016 recruits, let alone 2017 recruits. Female swimmers mature sooner than male swimmers and distance swimmers emerge even earlier, so the only 2017 recruits that are likely on the radar now are Hornish and Schmidt.

We're still only talking about adding 4-5 impact recruits in 2016, so Teri and Kristen know what they're losing: Pelton (back, middle distance, IM, sprints), Bootsma (back, fly, sprints), Acker (sprints, middle distance), Naze (IM, fly, back), and Grima (IM). They need to look at who can replace those points and relay slots while still addressing holes (distance and breast scoring). There's an extremely finite list of recruits who can contribute immediately. The staff needs to see if there's mutual interest from recruits with no prior ties to Cal (Voss, Horejsi, Beata Nelson, Jernberg) and evaluate them against returners in 2016 and recruits with prior connections to Cal.

2014 was quite a year for Katie Drabot. The Cedarburg High School junior established herself as one of the country's best 200 freestylers, in short-course yards, short-course meters, and long-course meters. Drabot began the year with an outstanding NCSA Spring Championships meet, winning the 400y IM and placing in the top-8 in the 50/100/200y free, 200 breast, and 200y IM (she also finaled in the 500y free and 100y breast).

This summer, at the Phillips 66 National Championships, she made finals in 100m free, 200m free, 200m IM, and 400m IM. She achieved Olympic Trials cuts in 100/200m free, 400m IM, and 200m breast and was selected to the USA National Junior Team for the 100/200m free. From there Drabot went on to represent the US at Junior Pan Pacs where she won the 200m free with the 10th fastest time swum by an American woman of any age in 2014.

Drabot's fall was equally impressive. Traveling with USA Swimming's 18 & Under World Cup team, Drabot went 1:54.45 in the SCM 200 free for a third-place finish in Tokyo, and 1:54.32 for a silver medal in Singapore. Her performances ranked her fourth in the world and led to an invitation to compete in the individual event at the 2014 Short Course World Championships in Doha. (Drabot had already been named to the team but had been scheduled only to participate on the 800 free relay.)

Two weeks after the World Cup tour, Drabot was back home leading Cedarburg High School to a second-place finish at the Wisconsin Girls Division 1 State Meet. She won the 200 and 500 freestyles, lowering her own state record in the first (with 1:45.40) and smashing Aja Van Hout's record in the second (with 4:43.09).

As a 16-year-old, Drabot had 11 swims in the top ten: 400y IM, 200m free (2nd); 200y free, 200y IM, 100m free (4th); 100y free (5th); 200m IM (6th); 400m IM (9th); and 50y free, 200y breast, and 200m breast (10th). As a 17-year-old, she closes out the year with the third-fastest 200y free and fourth 500y free.

When you think about how much experience Becca Mann has on the national and international scenes, it's hard to believe she was still only 16 for 11 months in 2014.

In her first year with North Baltimore, Mann won the 10K at Open Water Nationals and earned a spot on the US team competing at Pan Pacs in Australia, where she placed fourth in the 800m free. At Phillips 66 Nationals in Irvine, Mann was third in the 800m free, fourth in the 400m IM and fifth in the 400m free.

Mann had the fastest 800m free, 1500m free, and 400m IM in the nation for 16-year-old girls. She was 2nd in 1650 free and 400m free; 4th in 200m free and 200m fly; 5th in 200m IM; 7th in 200y fly, and 9th in 500y free. In the lone month that she was 17, Mann achieved the second-fastest 1000y free in the country, 3rd 400y IM, and 7th 500y free.


[COLOR="#006699"][U][SIZE=3]Beata Nelson[/SIZE][/U], Southwest Aquatic Team, Wisconsin[/COLOR]


Beata Nelson was the only non-Katie Ledecky national age group record-breaker in 2014 in the girls' 15-16 age bracket. Five days after lowering her own Wisconsin state high record in the 100 fly and eclipsing Katie McLaughlin's NAG of 51.78 with a 51.70, Nelson whacked another .62 off her time at the Arena Grand Prix at Minneapolis to settle the new NAG at 51.08.

Nelson was a B-finalist in both the 50m back and 50m fly at Phillips 66 Nationals, and a C-finalist in the 100m fly. She qualified for 2016 Olympic Trials in the 100m back and 100m fly. At the Wisconsin Girls Division 1 State Meet in November, she led off the Verona Area/Mount Horeb medley relay in 24.62, then went on to win individual titles in the 100 fly and 100 back, lowering her own record in the latter by .04 to 53.15.

Nelson finished atop the 16-year-old rankings in 100y back and 100y fly. She also had top-ten finishes in 200y IM (3rd); 50y free (4th); 100y free (7th); 200y back (10th); and 100m fly (10th).


[COLOR="#006699"][U][SIZE=3]Allie Szekeley[/SIZE][/U], Central Bucks Swim Team, Pennsylvania[/COLOR]


Allie Szekely had a terrific summer and an even better fall. If we were to give a Perseverance Award, Szekely would be in contention after her performances at Speedo Junior Nationals last summer. As a 14-year-old, Szekely had blown everyone away at 2012 Juniors, winning the 100m breast, 200m breast, 200m IM, and 400m IM. She set a meet record in the 200 breast and finished with 92 points, second only to Gillian Ryan, two years her senior. After a disappointing 2013 long course season, Szekely came back in 2014 with renewed purpose and won the 200m back. She finished second in the 200m IM, fifth in the 100m breast, and 24th in the 100m fly, and earned 2016 Olympic Trials cuts in 200 back, 100 breast, and 200 IM.

At the Speedo Tom Dolan Invitational in December, Szekely won the 100y back, 200y back, 100y breast, 200y breast, 200y IM, and 400y IM, establishing new PBs in each event and breaking the PVS Open record in the 200 back and both IMs. Szekely is now in the top ten of all time in the 200y back, 200y breast, and 400y IM for 15-16 girls.

Szekely wrapped up 2014 with the fastest 400y IM in the country and was ranked 2nd in 200y breast, 200y IM, and 200m back; 3rd in 200y back, 200m breast, and 200m IM; 4th in 100m breast; and 7th in 100y back and 100y breast.

I still think that Katie will be one of our top targets for the next recruiting cycle. She has that great, overall Cal fit feeling that I think Teri looks for in her student athletes. In the video below she states her strongest events as the 200 Free, 200 IM, and 400 IM. And her swimming idol is.........wait for it.........Missy Franklin .

Oh, and my gut tells me that Becca Mann and Beata Nelson won't be coming to Cal, but I have no inside information. Allie Szekeley, I have no clue. Like BD says, it's early, and I'm sure there will be a lot of swimmers that we haven't even heard of by the time Summer rolls around.

It's perfectly reasonable to discuss potential 2016 recruits right now, but 2017 is way out there and there are way too many unquantifiable unknowns (status of returners, 2016 recruits) that it just creates a huge rabbit hole. Coaches can only get a reasonable handle on their freshmen after the mid-season taper meets, which unfortunately is after LOIs for the next batch of recruits have been signed already. After NCAAs and conference meets, coaches have a full assessment of what they have returning and by July 1 have pretty good data on rising seniors.

I have no doubt the Bears will recruit Drabot, Mann, Nelson, and Szekeley, but I'd take Stanzi Mosley over all of them at this point. Teri probably needs distance or breast more, but Stanzi's already a three individual event scorer and a three relay swimmer midway through her junior year of high school. To be fair, she swam fully tapered earlier this month so it's not an apples to apples comparison to other juniors. As an in-state recruit, she's a no-brainer if she's interested in Cal.

Agree with tedbear that Mann isn't likely to come to Cal, but someone who's a potential 200/500/1650 free and 400 IM scorer is exactly what Teri needs. Distance is one of the few stroke groups where Teri hasn't coached multiple stars, so she can't afford to squander Cierra's presence. A world-class training partner and an area where the Bears only have a single 2017 scorer in the 500 and 1650 make distance a glaring need. The 2017 class is really deep in distance, so adding Hornish or Schmidt becomes a lot easier if Cierra and one of Mann, Voss, Byrnes, or Jernberg are already on board.

While Baker shores up the breast legs on medley relays, it's still a problem in individual events. Baker can score in the 100 breast, but that leaves a hole in the 100 back in 2017 (Bilquist doesn't project as a scorer yet). Horejsi might help, but she's purely a 100 breast specialist. Doesn't have a second or third event, but Baker on the medley back legs would be an upgrade over Bilquist. If Marina, Li, or Maija can develop into 200 breast scorers, Horejsi's makes more sense and Szekeley makes less sense. Teri needs to watch both to see how the rest of their seasons play out.

Drabot's an interesting case since she's clearly a stud and has already shown an interest in Cal. Bears need a 400 IMer, but that would likely take the 200 free (by far her best event) off the table since it's only two events after the 400 IM. With Baker and Li, Bears don't need another 200 IMer right away. Drabot's best fit for Cal would be 500 and 200 frees with either the 200 breast or 100 free as her third event plus the 800 free relay. Would be a great get, but her best events don't align perfectly with Cal's projected needs.

Originally didn't think back was a big need, but looking at Bilquist's times and Baker's projected events, do think Teri needs another elite backstroker. Amy's teammate, Claire Adams, would fill the bill. Voss may be able to help in the 200 back, but the 1650/200 back double is brutal. She'd have to go all out in the 200 back prelims to qualify for A finals and then could secure 11 points, no matter what she swims in finals. 1650 has no prelims, so everybody has to go all out no matter what. Used to think Mykkanen and Marsh would do and they may be part of the class, but probably not to the exclusion of a frosh scorer in either/both backs. Szekeley's back times are also worth watching too since a breast/back scorer would move Allie up quickly in Teri's pecking order.

A couple of Mykkanen, Marsh, Simonds, Devine, and Kampfer could be part of the mix, but their current times wouldn't merit the same scholly money as the aforementioned recruits, so they'd have to accept less money to swim for the Bears.

Abbey Weitzeil isn't just fast; she is The-Fastest-American-Ever-to-Swim-the-100y-Free. And she did it all alone, in lane 8, leading off the Canyons Aquatic Club's 400 free relay at Speedo Winter Juniors in Federal Way. Think what she might do with Simone Manuel swimming on one side of her and Margo Geer on the other.

Weitzeil gave us a hint of what she was capable of when she broke two high school records at the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships in May. She dipped under the 22-second bar and broke Olivia Smoliga's 2012 public school record by 1/100 with 21.98, and claimed the overall record as well. An hour later she took on the 100 free and eclipsed Dagny Knutsen's 48.15 public school record from 2009, as well as Missy Franklin's independent school record of 48.32, going 47.91. She re-broke the 100 with a 47.82 leadoff in Saugus's 4100 free relay, and climbed to fifth on the all-time list for 17-18 girls.

Weitzeil then went on to shine in long course meters over the summer. She went after the 50m NAG in time trials at Speedo Juniors and swam a 25.00 to tie Kara Lynn Joyce's mark from 2004. A week later at Phillips 66 Nationals, Weitzeil cracked the 25-second barrier and thus the NAG with 24.80, but Simone Manuel was even faster and set the new standard at 24.56. Weitzeil nevertheless made the USA's Pan Pacs team and had some huge swims in Australia. Notably, Weitzeil was part of an American record when Team USA's 400 free relay (Natalie Coughlin, Weitzeil, Madison Kennedy and Shannon Vreeland) touched in 3:27.70. The quartet broke the previous world and American records (although Netherlands set the world mark with their 3:26.53 first-place finish), and Weitzeil contributed with a split of 51.57.

This fall, Stanford freshman Manuel lowered the 17-18 NAGs in both the 50y and 100y frees at the Art Adamson Invitational, going 21.59 and 46.62, respectively. However, Weitzeil hadn't had her last word. Leading off Canyons' 200 free relay, she set the 50y free NAG with 21.49. A day later she broke the American record with her 100y free leadoff of 46.29, a full .33 under Manuel's mark and one-point-five-three seconds faster than she had been in May.

Weitzeil finished 2014 with the Number One 50y and 100y freestyles in the country, and was second to Manuel in the same events in LCM.

Baker was one of the big stars of 2014. She kicked off the year with a great Eastern Zone Speedo Championship Series meet at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, where she won the 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200 IM, all with best times. She also clocked PBs in the 200 fly and in the 50/100/200 freestyles while leading off SwimMAC's 200/400/800 free relays.

This summer, Baker qualified for 2014 Pan Pacs with a runner-up finish in the 200m back at Phillips 66 Nationals. She also placed fourth in the 100m back and 10th in the 200m IM. She went a lifetime best in the 100 back at Pan Pacs, winning the B-final in 1:00.35, which turned out to be the fourth-fastest time in the meet.

Baker's 11 top-ten swims of 2014 include: 100y back and 100m back (1st); 100y breast, 200y IM, 100m fly, 200m back and 200m IM (2nd); 100y free and 200y free (4th); 200m free (5th); and 100y fly (9th).
