Lot of moving parts right now, but Burchill was a nice to have not must have recruit. Almost certain that Ledecky is deferring. NCAP hired another coach since Gemmell will be traveling with Katie for the next 18 months. That wouldn't happen if KL were on the farm.

Opens up a new sense of urgency for Teri since she has a chance to repeat. Immediate need is for a sprint placeholder for Abbey on the 200 and 400 free relays. Hull would fill that role and probably break even with in-state tuition. No transfer rumors about Rebecca Millard of Texas and Orange County, but her times are roughly the same as Hull's. RM is good friends with Katie M.

2016 needs look like Abbey, Drabot (complement to existing sprinters), distance (training partner for Cierra and blunt some of Ledecky's impact), and back (Adams or Small).

Stanzi to 'SC and Burchill to UGa aren't great, but they aren't as big a threat to the Bears as LSJU in 2017.

As she approaches her final high school meet of the year, 2014 Nevada State Champion, Madi Hurst, has committed to swim for Teri McKeever at California. She is expected to join the Golden Bears in Berkeley for the 2015-2016 season.

"I chose Cal because I was looking for a place to call home, and that's what Berkeley gives me. The last few months of 2014 were rough for me and when I took an unofficial visit to the school earlier this year, I just knew. I could picture myself there. The team is incredibly cohesive and supportive of one another. The staff is experienced and caring. I particularly loved the coaching philosophy. Teri and Kristen are focused on developing strong women in addition to strong swimmers. I'm really looking forward to being able to contribute to an amazing team and school. Go Bears!" Madi Hurst

Almost a year ago, Hurst broke the Nevada High School Division 1 record in the 200 IM with her time of 2:02.97 at the state championships. She currently swims for Reno Aquatic Club and is a predominantly an IMer and breaststroker.

At the USA Swimming Winter Jr National Championships, she lowered her best time in the 200 IM to 2:02.18, taking nearly a second off her best time in that event from six months prior. If she can continue dropping time at that rate, she will be a strong pick-up for the Golden Bears. She dropped a ton of time between 2013 and 2014 in the 200 breaststroke, improving from a 2:23 to a 2:15.

Take a look at her best times below:

SCY
◦ 200 IM: 2:02.18
◦ 400 IM: 4:15.17
◦ 200 Breaststroke: 2:15.06

LCM
◦ 200 IM: 2:23.82
◦ 400 IM: 4:57.26
◦ 200 Breaststroke: 2:37.57

Madi's an interesting pick up for Bears. 400 IM and 200 Breast are extremely tough events and places where the Bears need additional depth. She's already a Pac-12 scorer and low risk since she's likely not taking up huge $s. If she stays right where she is, she's in line with Maija and Grima. Mid-term upside is Naze or Marina. Long-term stretch goal is Celina. Any NCAA points she can add are gravy.

Is Madi's signing because of Abbey, although I realize they are in diff events. I would assume they are still trying to replace Abbey with a transfer or across the pond?
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Complete speculation, but kinda doubt Teri's using Abbey's scholly on an international. It's an Olympic year and an international who can help the Bears will already be on a national team preparing for the Olympics. Would also likely require a near full ride. Bears have a decent chance to repeat, but needs another sprinter (Valerie Hull?). May split up Abbey's money on Madi plus a transfer.

A new possible sprint transfer in play for the Bears-Valerie Hull. Originally from San Diego and reportedly leaving Auburn after her freshman year. Took an official visit to Cal as a high school senior. She'd be the third faster 50 free sprinter on the team next season as a sophomore.

Defending NCAA Champion Cal Women Add Transfer From Auburn All-American Sprinter Hull

Sprinter Valerie Hull has decided to transfer from Auburn to Cal beginning with her sophomore season of eligibility. This will take her closer to her native San Diego for her three remaining years of eligibility.

"I'm grateful for the experience I had here at Auburn, but I'm excited to be closer to home and to continue my swim career as a Golden Bear," Hull said of her decision.

Hull had a standout freshman season at Auburn that concluded with her participation at the 2015 NCAA Championships both individually and as part of Auburn's relays.

In her individual swims, Hull was 23rd in the 50 free (22.25) and 37th in the 100 free (49.15). That time in the 50 was a new lifetime best for Hull, and she was as fast as 48.88 from a flat-start in the 100 free.

In the process, she also picked up two first team All-America honors by anchoring Auburn's 200 free relay (21.46) and 400 free relay (48.75).

Her proven ability to swim fast at the NCAA level will be a huge boost for Cal, the defending NCAA team champions. While Cal does return plenty of stars from its squad last year that won three relay events at nationals, Teri McKeever graduates top pure-freestyle-sprinter Kaylin Bing, who led off their title-winning 200 free relay in 22.36; and also loses Missy Franklin, who was also on that relay and split 21.28. Hull's 200 free relay split in finals was also faster than that of Cal's third leg, Rachel Bootsma, who was 21.60 in that race.

Hull will have a shot at scoring individually in the 50 as a sophomore, but more importantly for Cal's team effort she will combine junior Farida Osman to form the core of Cal's new sprint group in the 2015-2016 season after Abbey Weitzeil (the best sprinter in the class of 2015) decided to defer college enrollment until after the 2016 Olympic Trials.

Also joining the refreshed Cal sprint group next season will be Amy Bilquist (22.1/48.9 freestyler). She's joined in the class by a pair of swimmers who are not sprinters, but like current Cal standouts Liz Pelton and Rachel Bootsma can still hold their own, Katie McLaughlin (22.6/48.3) and Kathleen Baker (22.6/48.2), which gives Cal a chance at repeating as 200 free relay champions in 2016.

wow..welcome Valerie! Just what the doctor (BD) asked for. Auburn seems to be having other transfers too. I was checking the results from the NCAA for any breaststrokers there and they have Annie Lazor(jr)who was 10th in the 200br and 20th in the 100br. I'm just saying.................

Without Abbey, Teri really needed another sprinter. Hull is tailor made for the Bears: 50/100 specialist, in-state, and immediately eligible. Teri now has the parts she needs to have a reasonable chance to repeat. An additional distance or sprint breaststroke scorer would be nice to have, but those can probably wait until the next recruiting class.

Doesn't sound like things are going all that well at Auburn. Have heard that David Marsh doesn't get along with the current Athletic Director, so that doesn't bode well for a return. Alyssa Marsh may be scared off. She probably comes down to Cal and LSJU. Both schools could use another strong backstroker, but Marsh, Mykkanen, and Emily Eastin probably aren't immrdiate contributors at either school.

Haven't heard definitive plans for Noemie and Marina for next season. Canada's Olympic Trials are right after NCAAs, so wouldn't be a shock for Noemie to blueshirt. Could also see Marina staying in Spain next season.

If either or both blueshirt, Teri could add another transfer if they filled a specific 2016 or 2017 need (distance, sprint breast, or back). Not likely, but possible.

Katie Ledecky to defer enrollment at Stanford until fall of 2016

Olympic champ and all-world distance swimmer Katie Ledecky will defer her freshman season at Stanford University, instead staying at her Nation's Capital Swim Club training base through the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The move had been widely speculated ever since Ledecky gave Stanford a verbal commitment one year ago. Ledecky is currently the most red-hot female swimmer on the planet, continuing to smash world records in the 400, 800 and 1500 frees while moving into the elite tier of the 200 as well.

Deferring will allow Ledecky to continue training with coach Bruce Gemmell, who coached her through her original breakout season that landed her on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. The NCAP training site that houses Ledecky and Gemmell also just hired big-time age group coach Sue Chen, and should only be getting stronger as a club in the leadup to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and the Rio Olympics.

Ledecky's decision to defer means that the top 2 prospects in her class will postpone their freshman seasons. Sprinter Abbey Weitzeil has already decided to defer her enrollment at Cal.

Could make a case for KM deferring or enrolling. Have no idea what her status is. Bears are lopsided in fly now with Farida, KM, Noemie, Bootsma, and Mau. Also deep enough in the 800 free relay with Cierra, Pelton, Baker, and Acker. Losing KM would be a problem, especially if Noemie blue shirts, but not a fatal blow.

Bears can't afford to lose Cierra (500/1650) or Baker (sprint breast). If KM defers, Teri's biggest loss will be that she can only add two new elite recruits in 2016 since she has to save spots for Abbey and KM.

Things are becoming more sharply focused on 2016 individual and relay line ups plus recruiting priorities. KM's 2016 individual swims would be 50 free, 200 free(!), and 200 fly. 4 relays, skipping the 400 free. 2016 Bears will already be loaded in the 100 fly (Farida, Bootsma, Noemie, and Mau) and relatively weaker in 200 free (Cierra, Pelton, Acker) with Baker in the 100 breast. 800 relay would be Cierra, Katie, Baker, and Pelton.

May be heresy since it didn't happen with Missy, but Abbey could be a 5 relay, 2 event (50/100) swimmer for the Bears. As previously noted, 2017 Bears will be loaded in the 50/100 (Abbey, Farida, Amy, Hull), but need another 800 free relay swimmer (Cierra, KM, Baker). Drabot would be slightly better than Adams because Adams would have a conflict with the 200 free and 100 back as individual events.

One blue and gold lining to Abbey deferring is that she gets to recruit club teammate Nikol Popov for another year, Popov is a sophomore who went 59 mid in the 100 breast yesterday. Would free up Baker to swim 200 free or 100 back as an individual event and maybe swim the back legs on medley relays.

Saw an interesting comment on Cal and Bilquist in a SwimSwam article on Natalie's potential return to the 100 back. Natalie swam a 1 minute 100 meter back time trial and the thought is that she could be back in the Olympic mix in her signature event. One commenter called Missy a lock with Natalie, Bootsma, Pelton, Baker, and Bilquist chasing. Prediction was that Missy and Bilquist would end up on the team. Personally think Amy's ceiling as a sprinter is higher, so I was surprised. Did crack me up that only Cal backstrokers were mentioned, although Klaren was left out.

Still think the Bears need another elite backstroker (Adams or Small) in the next recruiting class, but may not be as acute if Bilquist comes up to speed quickly in back. Drabot can fill a lot of roles and could maybe alleviate the possibility of Abbey swimming all 5 relays.

bobo gigi : "If she wants it really, she could play the second place at olympic trials next year behind Missy Franklin. So open for that second qualifying spot. If it will be decided around 59.50, then Natalie would have her chance. Same chances as Pelton, Bootsma, Baker or Bilquist. I don't forget that I've picked at the moment Amy Bilquist for that second spot. But everything can change until Omaha.
It would be great to see her qualify for her 4th olympic games. But in my opinion her best chance is in the 4X100 free relay."

Deraj : "Besides Franklin, Baker is improving rapidly and Bootsma has been fantastic in yards and I agree that Bilquist has huge potential so competition will be huge for her in that event. If we miss out on a sprint breaststroker for 2016, domestically & internationally, guess we can always shoot for a studly prospect from the 2017 class, such as Nikol Popov who hails from Abbey's swim club - she currently has a 1:00.67 in the 100 BR (12/14)...

Nikol Popov, a sophomore at Valencia High School in Valencia, California, broke the girls' 15-16 National Age Group Record in the 100 yard breaststroke on Saturday at CIF-SS Division I Finals in Riverside...clocking a 59.64 to win the event, and taking a whole second off her previous best. Popov did break Lilly King's NAG mark of 59.67, set in December 2013 at Winter Junior Nationals.
Nikol Popov, May 2015 28.04 / 31.60 = 59.64
Lilly King, December 2013 27.69 / 31.98 = 59.67

Nikol's definitely on an exciting upwards trajectory with these significant time drops at such an early stage of her swimming "career"! Hope she'll get recruited, Abbey will certainly play a pivotal role in that if there's mutual interest and the fit's right on both sides!

The 5 relay scenario actually might make more sense for Abbey than it had initially appeared. Will partly depend on the progression of our Dream Team @ the 200 Free and several other events in the next year or two, as well as who Teri ends up recruiting out of Drabot, Adams and Small (amongst others) for the incoming class of 2016.

-------

Speaking of recruiting, I know how we all naturally love to celebrate the achievements of our student-athletes on this forum and find it really hard to resist poking fun at our beloved country club rivals across the bay at every opportunity lol, but to be fair (just this once :p), recognition should also be given to Ella Eastin, who had originally been recruited by Teri to join the exalted ranks of Dream Team 2015, but ultimately chose to rep the furd instead.

She set a new National Independent HS record of 1:53.90 in the 200 IM @ the CIF Southern Section Division 2 Championships yesterday, which would have placed her 3rd @ 2015 NCAAs, just behind Missy & Liz! LSJU will benefit massively from her talents in both IMs next year as that's an area where they have been sorely lacking in since Maya DiRado's graduation. Though Missy won't be available @ 2016 NCAAs, we'll at least have Liz, Kathleen & Celina to fend off Ella's challenge in the shorter medley distance. Eastin's forte is actually in the 400 IM where her PB is 4:05.25, good for 6th @ 2015 NCAAs, with only 2 returning swimmers faster than her...

Ella had also won her 100 Breast race in 1:00.39, a time which probably would have been more useful to us relays wise than down at the farm, as they already have a number of pretty fast breaststrokers. Her 200 Fly PB of 1:54.37 isn't exactly shabby either, scoring in the 5th slot @ NCAAs with only 2 returning A finalists ahead of her time (of course we'll have Katie's killer talents in this event to call upon, if she doesn't decide to defer next year!). Factor in that Ella's full SCY taper will come at the upcoming State Championships (where Abbey won't be competing as she has elected to focus on her long course training in preparation for Worlds & University Games), so expect to see even faster times across the board at that meet!

Bears need another scorer in the 400 IM and that's a roll Ella Eastin could have filled. Don't think her sister Emily would contribute much in back, but Ella would have definitely helped.

Thought that Riley Scott was a bigger recruiting loss at the time, but appears she regressed a little bit this season. Her 100 breast time yesterday was nothing special. Haven't looked at he 200 breast time (another niche Cal need), but don't think she'd be much if any upgrade over Marina.

The only upgrade I see is that perhaps because of youth more upside potential. Not sure if Marina will ever be as successful in the short course as she is in the LC!

Neither Marina nor Maija are sprint breaststrokers. Both are better in the 200. Without being needed on relays, Marina can swim the 500 free, 100 breast, and 200 breast. Will have less pressure on her and can train for longer races. Maija will swim 200 IM and both breasts. Any points that either generates would be gravy.

Had Abbey not deferred, Teri might have added a sprint breaststroker, but back, distance, and sprint are bigger immediate needs. Hull filled the sprint need, so think Teri doesn't go for another sprint breaststroker until Popov in 2017.

Just got round to watching a few of those race & interview videos.

Good catch on Katie's comment about Orientation Week. Maybe that claim of Katie's imminent deferral announcement as being sourced from Katie herself is in reality more a case of wishful thinking on the part of a furd?? :p

Always a treat to marvel at Abbey utterly dominating her HS competition in those 50 & 100 free races - her breakout after the first wall is usually where she separates herself from the field, and her straight arm recovery technique with those bent wrists does catch the eye!

Also interesting to learn from her interview that Abbey's on only 2 days of rest for this meet, and that her international schedule will include going to the FINA World Cup Moscow stop (held in long course for the first time) after Kazan 2015, and that Team USA's training camp for Worlds will be in Croatia.
