With practices underway, Katie Ledecky and Stanford University lead the CollegeSwimming.com Top 25 Recruit Rankings for the Class of 2015. Though the World Record-holder won't be repping last year's 3rd-place NCAA finishers, the Cardinal could have positioned themselves as the team to beat in 2016.

The Pac-12 dominated this years rankings with four of the top five classes and six of eight conference teams in the Top 25. The ACC, bolstered by recent additions Louisville and Notre Dame, claimed three of the top ten spots while the SEC only had three.

Nora McCullagh is a very versatile swimmer who could be a good training partner for rising junior Madisyn Cox. Rule, Hansen, and Anderson will all add depth to the Longhorns in the next few years. Look out for Texas in the next few years with this dangerous class.

Two east coast swimmers will also be moving into campus in Mary Pelton and Caroline McTaggart. Pelton will be joining her sister Elizabeth in the Pac-12 as an accomplished sprinter. McTaggart is another sprinter who will be looking to make waves in LA this year.

Two Hong Kong pickups were also big for the recruiting class with Haughey and Yeung coming from across the Pacific. Haughey was the gold medalist at the 2013 World Juniors in the 100 free and Yeung finished third at the Youth Asian Games in the 100 and 200 breast.

What are the most popular swimming schools?

If you follow the headlines on SwimSwam or Swimming World or Twitter followers you might think powerhouses like California, Stanford and Georgia and you'd be partially correct. But a look at the college that have received the most likes among current high school seniors shows a much wider array of schools.

It also shows WHERE swimmers are taking their visits. The hiring of Bob Bowman has helped rocket the Arizona State up the rankings. The Sun Devils have become the most visited school in the country (among official and unofficial visits). That trend started well before Bowman's hiring however, when the Sun Devil Junior Days welcomed multiple visitors.

Using data from 5,735 recruits who have registered on CollegeSwimming.com, here's a look at the schools which have received the most interest. This is based solely on the NUMBER of interested swimmers in the Top 1000 of gender. It isn't reflective of the top recruits. (That's tomorrow).


25 South Carolina & Notre Dame
Up 14 places from 2015, the word is getting out about what McGee Moody & crew are doing in Columbia. Not surprising, in light of the success of Marwan El Kamash and Ahmed Mahmoud, the Gamecocks are the top choice for Egyptian recruits (and there are more of them than you'd think). The Fighting Irish jumped up twenty-three spots from last year, much of that on the women's side where Mike Litzinger has taken over has head coach.

24 Yale
The Bulldogs are beginning to make things interesting in the Ivy world again. For the Ivies though, popularity isn't the issue, getting in and building a big roster to score in a deep conference is.

23 Tennessee
Rockytop is an easy sell on those beautiful Fall days. Interestingly, the Lady Vols are in the top three among the Top 50 recruits of 2016.

22 Harvard
Harvard is always on most popular lists, and with most kids, it, like the Ivies, are a distant dream. Still, swimmers are taking notice.

21 Boston University
BU received more applicants than the likes of Texas and Stanford and Michigan State so its not a surprise here.

19 Brown & Michigan
Brown actually dropped eleven spots from last year - surprising given the new coaching staffs. Michigan drops one spot, but is #1 among Big Ten schools

18 Columbia
Columbia moves up three spot ranks second among the Ivies. Like everyone but Harvard and Princeton, numbers are key and like the others, the Lions are moving up in people's mind.

17 Auburn
Compared to the number of applicants, Auburn swimming outkicks its reputation even as it falls two spots.. The Tigers are still in the top ten in interest from Blue Chippers though.

15 North Carolina & Texas
Three flagship institutions that should be among the top in interest in any given year. The Longhorns rank third among Blue Chippers.

14 UC-Santa Barbara
In the swimming community UC-Santa Barbara is oftentimes overlooked, but over 55,000 kids applied there last year making it one of the top six.

13 Boston College
In the swimming community it isn't a big name, but BC's footprint nationally is huge. This is the ACC school where, if you can get in, you can make the team.

11 UCLA & Southern Cal
USC moves up six spots even though the days of 70+ on the roster are long gone. The Trojans can turn away more than most. UCLA's numbers are adjusted for being a single-gender program, but the Bruins are among the best in appealing to Top 300 kids.

10 Arizona
The Wildscats are getting from pressure from ASU, but no team gets into the minds of recruits earlier than the Wildcats. (They're #3 among top Sophomores).

9 Florida State
The Seminoles are a perennial 'destination' school. Who wouldn't like to add Tallahassee to their list of favorites?

8 Stanford
The Cardinal ranks second behind Berkeley for the number of Blue Chippers, but the perceived cost and chance to make the team keep them off some next-level kids' lists.

7 UC-San Diego
The Tritons are the only Division II or III school on the list but in the non-swimming world only UCLA and Berkeley receive more applications.

6 Georgetown
One of those places that makes you say, "WTF?" But if you want your kid to go to a great school with Division I swimming, you can do worse. The Hoyas move up seven spots so don't be surprised to hear more from them.

5 Florida
Florida drops one spot, but their quality is among the top five. Increasingly tough admission criteria are forcing the Gator staff to work harder.

4 Cornell
A couple of new Head Coaches position Cornell for a big move in a league where depth is vital. Moving up six spots is a big help.

3 Arizona State
The Bowman factor takes Sun Devils up eight spots. Most of that is in that second tier of top recruits, but if you make them faster, others will notice.

As impressive as the classes the Golden Bears land are the kids they can turn away. Only Stanford comes close in terms of the number of blue chippers looking who've got them on their list.

1 Duke
You heard right. The Blue Devils generated more 'interests' than any other school in the country for the second straight year. The quality of swimmer still isn't top-ten material, but its getting better.

Interesting. Helps ASU too that Bowman is the Olympic coach. Surprised Virginia is not on the list.

Surprised that UVa, A&M, and Georgia didn't make the list. Not sure about the men's team, but Duke women's team is building toward being fully funded, so it's attractive for academically strong swimmers who may not be able to contribute at Cal or LSJU.

List is biased toward stronger academic schools, but coaching stability matters too. UVa has a strong women's program, but the men's team is a mess.

The tall brunette who's flanked by Amy & Missy in the 1st picture looks like Kirsten Vose, who swims for Rose Bowl Aquatics in Pasadena. So it appears that Teri did target a local sprint breaststroker after all for the 2015 class, alongside an IM'er from in-state (Ella Eastin who's by Katie & Kathleen in the pic).

Bears need at least one sprinter in 2017 (Farida, KV). Best options are Lauren Pitzer, Marta Ciesla, and Ashley. Assumed Ashley was headed to UVs since her sister, a former swimmer, rows for the 'Hoos.

If all goes according to plan, 2017 targets will be a sprinter, Popov/Aroesty, Schmidt/Harnish/Rongione, Taylor Ault, and Kuks.

Had also thought that her national teammates (Camille, Yvette & Stephanie) might have been a factor in recruiting Ms. Haughey[/FONT][/SIZE][/COLOR]

Without a doubt, Teri targeted the right 2015 recruits based on what the projected needs for her 2016 team were. Zero relay holes for the foreseeable future with Abbey (200/400 Frees, both medleys), McL (400/800 Frees, 400 Medley), Baker (200/400/800 Frees), Amy (200/400 Frees), and Eastin (breast legs on both medleys). That scenario only worked with 3 California and no international 2015 recruits. That theoretical 2016 team may have generated 600 points at NCAAs and destroyed everyone else.

Even without Cierra, Abbey, Eastin, and Siobahn, 2016 Bears still have more than enough to win it all. Will need a little luck, but may also be able to win in 2017 without Cox, Small, and Drabot. Still a team sport where cumulative score not raw star power wins. It's all about making educated guesses based on best available data at the time. A timely April transfer by Siobhan certainly would be welcomed, but it also wouldn't make the Bears' 2017 800 relay hole disappear.

Speaking of what ifs, Sophia Batchelor is no longer on the Florida roster. May be redshirting for the Olympics, but didn't qualify for NCAAs last season. Sophia's frosh Cal roommate Taylor Young is now swimming for San Diego State.

For example, her LCM->SCY 1:43.55 in the [U]200 free[/U] ranks her atop of the NCAA currently (as well as an A cut)...compare this to Liz's swift 1:45.33 converted 'B' cut #16 time from Winter Nattys. Siobhn would IMO fill Liz's vacated spot quite nicely in 2007 in the [U]800 free relay[/U], right alongside Dream Teamers Katie, Kathleen & Amy/Abbey...

Haughey's [U]100 free[/U]'s also up there, in the #4 spot (48.07 converted time, B cut).

So yeah, you're all prob. more than a mite sick of me mega-talking up a recruit who was never even wooed by Teri in the first place :rolleyes:

But this relative lack of interest at Coach McKeever's end could well have been cos of budgetary considerations (internationals = $$ compared to in-state recruitees like Abbey/Kathleen & Eastin/Vose), plus the happenstance of the Dream Team falling into place for the class of 2015 :beer:, rather than an indication of Siobhn's fit, usefulness & scoring potential for :bear:s.

To look on the bright side of things, now that we should have extra manoeuvring room this recruiting year with Cierra's unexpected transfer :cry: (not to mention failing to snag any Top 10 prospects for 2016 :bawl, I would be blinking ecstatic if Siobhn could somehow be convinced to transfer here after 2016 NCAAs!!!

"Minna Atherton proved that we had better being paying attention. Atherton, who finished third in the open 100 backstroke in a time of 59.69, won the 15 year old 100 backstroke this evening in a time of 59.37.

Atherton broke the junior world record of 59.58, a record she had previously shared with American Claire Adams. She also set a new junior all comers record breaking the mark of 59.59 set by Emily Seebohm in 2008.

Her time now puts Atherton in the fourth in the world rankings."

And then medley relay with Kathleen/Amy, Noemie/Katie, and then anchored by Abbey. Realistically though, I hope Teri is working hard already for the Canucks. #DT2

Part of what made the Dream Team possible was having 8 seniors (6 major $s) plus Missy. Were able to leverage that into 4 major recruits (targeted 5). As of now, Bears have three high $ sophs (Noemie, Mau, Hull). If Teri wants to work toward 2018, ideal transfer to fill Pelton's scholly would be a current soph.

Very deep 2018 class (Ruck, Penny, Merrell, Ariola, Homovich, Bayer, Shelton). Losing Noemie and Mau in the same class probably means Teri needs a flyer in the 2017 class. Ariola is America's next great backstroker and is from same club as LSJU recruit Hannah Boyd. Bayer's from same club as Ledecky and Byrnes.

Teri's Bears are always going to be in the title hunt, so doubt she'd deliberately cannibalize the 2018 team to build up a recruiting war chest.

On the individual side, last year's star of the meet, sophomore Taylor Ruck, once again led the way for Chaparral. She won the same two events as last year, the 200 free and the 500 free, and in both instances she broke the state records she had set last year. Her time of 1:46.51 replaced last year's mark of 1:47.76 in the 200 free, and she knocked a whopping six seconds off her mark in the 500 free, going from 4:51.68 last year to 4:45.17 this year.

Abbey Weitzeil did some soul-searching as the run-up to Rio hit high gear. And the Cal signee decided to defer starting college for a year to focus on her dream of making the Olympic team. She's got a great support crew around her, and she talks about that, what this year has been like, and how she's filling her free time in this week's 20 Question Tuesday.

1. How is your training?
Abbey: Training is going really well actually. We're doing a lot of new stuff this year with training and trying new things. I feel like I have improved a lot. I am really excited for when I get to fully taper and do all of that.

2. Several others have redshirted or deferred, including Katie Ledecky, why did it work for you?
Abbey: It made a lot of sense. I am really happy that I deferred. At first it was hard, not being at Cal. And is still is, in some ways, a bummer. But I am happy training wise. I have found things to do. I am into yoga. I am having fun.

3. An Olympic year approaching and after you having a breakout year, it was just a unique situation wasn't it?
Abbey: Exactly. What I was saying when I would wait a year is that this great school and program, Cal, will still be there -- this opportunity won't be. Why not get the best of both worlds?

4. You seem to have really high spirits, that's important, isn't it?
Abbey: I am really excited about it. I am happy to stay at home for another year. It's good living at home. I am an only child still, just for a while. Both of my sisters are in different states. It's kind of the same as it was in high school - not a lot has changed. But it's nice to be with my parents for another year, and my cousins are still in town. Plus I have a lot of friends from my club team.

5. You mentioned some changes in the program you and coach Coley Stickels have come up with -- pretty significant?
Abbey: A lot needed to change after this summer. It wasn't my best performance. I had some trouble with it. I didn't swim very well. So I started lifting a lot differently. I wasn't really lifting before, so I should (laughs) say I started lifting. I started the yoga and doing some different things in practice - focusing on things I needed to work on more. We changed a lot of little things. I feel a lot better.

6. Did you feel stronger at the Arena Pro Swim Series?
Abbey: Coming back from Minneapolis. I wanted to be a little faster than I was, but it was good for me. I improved on some things in my races and I still have some things to work on. But I learned a lot for things to work on races.

7. And yet you are still very young, did that make deferring easier?
Abbey: I am 18 and I turn 19 in December at Nationals. Mentally, this has been a big change for me, because I was in that mindset of college and moving away, like other high school seniors did after graduation. It was really hard, I'm not going to lie, not going to school with my class. Being home and seeing everyone off at college through social media I was like, "I want to be there!" So it was hard at first. But like I said, I really enjoy training with (Canadian standout) Santo Condorelli and we're pretty good friends. So it's a big help to have a training partner there. I found my way over time. I felt more comfortable with the fact I wasn't going off to school.

8. How do you adjust without the academic workload?
Abbey: I am not in school so my days are not as full. On the one hand, I'm not (laughs) stuck with homework. But I still draw and do a lot of other things. And I do like having an open day for working out and resting.

9. Making the National Team and now going to big meets like in Minneapolis, you are learning more than ever aren't you?
Abbey: Oh, absolutely. That's one of the main things actually, learning from your experience. I have grown as a swimmer and changed so much since I first made the National Team two summers ago. From that 100 free to right now, I have changed so much as a swimmer, and am so much more experienced. I feel more confident and I am more confident. I am stronger, and I am a better swimmer.

10. How much do those international and big meets improve you?
Abbey: Experience is a big part of it. My first meet with the National Team was Pan Pacs. It was fun but it was scary. I didn't have much experience. Now I go to big meets like Minneapolis and I can have fun and learn from it. It's a lot easier to be focused and swim fast - and to enjoy it, rather than just worry about it behind the blocks, if that makes sense.

11. A lot of teenagers aren't comfortable with media, but you really are -- do you feel like that mental maturity also helps?
Abbey: I have developed a lot personally - mentally, not just physically. I am excited, really excited, about what next year will bring.

12. You and Coach Stickels have a really good working relationship - how much has that guided your development?
Abbey: Ever since Coley came to the team, we kind of clicked as swimmer-coach. I just immediately started trusting him, which is one of the most important things you have with a coach. He has learned more about me as a swimmer and a person. I really enjoy working with him. He's a really smart guy and knows what he is doing. He has a plan in mind and day by day, he brings it out. I never know what's coming next, I really don't. And that's a good thing, because I never get bored. I can walk in and we might do something we have never done before. So I really enjoy working with him. And I have gotten to know him and his wife Lindsay, better.

13. Last year I asked about a couple of TV shows you watched, and you said you had no time - I understand now there are a few programs in the rotation?
Abbey: I watch a lot (laughs) more TV now. I love to watch The Walking Dead. Friends is always a go-to - I am obsessed with Friends and have seen every episode so many times. I watch How I met your mother - I watch (laughs) a lot of stuff.

14. How was your adjustment to weight lifting?
Abbey: It was a big shock. I definitely had a hard time at first. I didn't know what I was doing, so just learning the technique of things and trying to do them right was a big learning experience. We talk about how I am built, with a short torso and long limbs, so I don't have a body for lifting. That makes it harder. But I have gotten a lot better at it, and I really enjoy it. I don't lift every day, so on those days I go to normal dryland with the team.

15. So this new year of being done with school is still similar because you are at home and around friends and family?
Abbey: It is kind of a continuation of my life here, in some ways. That was one of my worries when I chose to stay home, having a life that was completely about swimming. I didn't want that. I didn't want to have my mind on swimming only for 365 days. I didn't want to be stressed about swimming every minute. So I try to keep it simple and appreciate and enjoy the extra time I ended up with here because there are a lot of great people and great things.

16. You also glow when you talk about your family, don't you?
Abbey: Oh yeah, my family has always been the most important thing to me. I was raised that way, that your family comes first. My parents are the most supportive people out there. And my whole family -- my aunt and uncle are like a second set of parents to me. My cousins are like my sisters. And my actual sisters are great - we're a family (laughs) of mostly girls. I am actually talking to you from the home of one of my cousin's now.

17. So the ticket request list for Olympic Trials might be a bit long for you?
Abbey: My whole family (laughs) will be at Trials. They have all made it happen. My immediate family, my cousins everyone. I will have a big cheering section. It'll be awesome.

18. Doing meets like Minneapolis are a good place to see what the field will somewhat be like at Trials right?
Abbey: That was a good setup to learn and prepare for Trials. I saw the psych sheet and I was like, "This meet is going to be awesome." No one can mess around in prelims. We were missing a couple people in a few events that you expect to see at Trials, but for the most part, that field was similar to what it's going to be like. So that is really cool. Every time you go through something like that, it gives you more assurance, more confidence. In each of my races I learned so much. I watched every race over and over again.

19. What did you take from Minneapolis in particular?
Abbey: My finishes were horrible in my 50 and 100 - everyone knows that, because everyone caught me! Coley after the 100 said, "We are going to work on your finishes over and over and over." So the things we figured out we'll work on, but it's good to come out of that with confidence.

20. So you will swim three freestyle events at Trials?
Abbey: We are thinking the 50 100 and 200. It's a good lineup. I don't know if I will end up swimming the 200 at Trials. The 50 and 100 for sure, but the 200 is iffy. It's not one (laughs) of my best events. But it's a good event, honestly, and working on it has made such a difference in my training. All the racing I did this summer has really helped me in practice now. I feel faster in my turns. Everything feels better. I just feel the difference from training. I wasn't rested for that meet (Minneapolis), so it's really reassuring that I swam pretty well. It's good to feel that good in a race not being rested, not being shaved, but still having that confidence and coming away with more confidence to get back to training.

"It’s quite possible that the name Olivia Hallisey will roll off the tongue as easily as Marie Curie in a few years. That is not an overstatement. Where Curie made a landmark discovery of radioactivity and became a household name, Hallisey soon could be known as the woman who was instrumental in eradicating the ebola virus from the planet.

In September, Hallisey won the Grand Prize at the Google Regional Science Fair for developing a test for ebola that would not require refrigeration. This would allow medical staff to go into remote areas of Africa – where the disease is most prevalent – and test for ebola without the need for bulky refrigerators to store the equipment.

About a month later, she was on Time Magazine’s list of the 30 Most Influential Teens with the likes of Katie Ledecky, Jaden Smith and Malala Yousafzai.

Hallisey, 17, possesses more than a sharp mind. She represents the Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club in Connecticut, primarily in the individual medley and distance freestyle events. In between her rigorous schedule at Greenwich High School and her afternoon swim practice, she took time to talk about her newfound popularity."
