Hello again from Berkeley! Since my last blog post, us Bears have been busy swimming, studying and racking up our frequent flier miles. After going home for the holidays, we made our way to Hawaii for one amazing training trip, and have returned to Berkeley to begin the Pac-12 racing portion of our season.

Last weekend, we traveled down to Arizona to compete against Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. Only a week after returning from Hawaii and in our first week of the new semester, this is always a tight turnaround for us. One of the most challenging things for me this time of year is rapidly readjusting from the training-mode, in which we find ourselves throughout winter break, and shaking off the "race rust." Although we've been training quite a bit since our last meet in December, getting into the mindset of racing can often be challenging. This part of the season is all about competing and getting your hand to the wall first, and for me, it means tapping into the little kid in me who fell in love with swimming in the first place. Playing in the warm Hawaiian waves reminded me how much I enjoy swimming now to bring that joy into the upcoming races!

Coming up next is the most exciting part. This weekend we have two home meets against USC and UCLA, and two weeks after that we swim Stanford at home, as well. Some of my fondest memories while swimming at Cal have been meets in front of a home crowd. Parents, friends, professors, fans, families, you name it and they're all there supporting us. The environment is electrifying. Nothing compares to the energy of home dual meets or the humbleness I feel when the crowd fills the stands. These feelings are especially heightened when the number of meets I have left is steadily decreasing (cue the sappy section of my post ).

As I head into the last three dual meets of my Cal career, I am constantly being reminded of what little time I have left. As a senior, the question of the hour is "what's happening after you graduate?" and it's starting to make me queasy. All I want to focus on right now is saturating every moment and enjoying each day as it comes. If I can do that and not get caught up in the whirlwind of all of my "lasts," then I actually have tons of time left valuable time to spend with my amazing teammates and coaches.

For now, I'm getting energized for the upcoming meets and preparing for the weeks ahead! Come out this Friday and Saturday to cheer us on as we take on the Trojans and Bruins in what are sure to be nail-biting duals. Thank you, and as always, GO BEARS!

Eva Greene is a senior from Falls Church, Va., while Maija Roses is a freshman from Durham, N.C. Eva and Maija will alternate producing blog entries each week during the 2014-15 season, with Eva writing her piece and Maija creating a video.

You're right, sandbagging isn't the right term. Salo probably realized he wasn't going to beat Cal or LSJU at either Pac-12s or NCAAs and needed a recruiting boost with a deep and talented So Cal recruit class looming, so he rested his team for Cal on Friday. Not all teams have the same goals. Texas women beat both Cal and LSJU in duals this season, but nobody thinks they'll finish ahead of Cal, LSJU, Georgia, or A&M at NCAAs. 'Zona was (im)famous under their prior coaching regime for scheduling big names early in the season, tapering for those meets, racking up a high ranking based solely on dual meets, and using that for recruiting purposes.

Teri's team doesn't a whole lot left to accomplish prior to Pac-12s. Juggling relay line ups to figure out which groups/order works best and getting Missy a 500 free B cut, which she may or may not need at NCAAs are the only things left to do during duals. Missy can get a B cut without tapering, but Bing, Acker, Mau, Grima, and Maija can't get off the bubble/NCAA invites without taper and/or racing suits.

I do recall there was some chatter concerning Salo having possibly rested his team a bit for that dual against us last season...one can't really be sure but I guess if his swimmers' times had experienced a bigger drop than usual across the board for an in-season dual meet, then there may be some truth to this...

And in other news, it appears we've been demoted from co-#1 to #3 in the latest edition of the CSCAA rankings. Suits me perfectly fine as you all know what I think of this poll in terms of its relevancy to predicting NCAA scoring. Should also put less pressure on Bears leading up to the big event which isn't all that a bad thing...

http://swimswam.com/2014-15-ncaa-womens-swimswam-power-rankings-third-edition/

We're back with our first set of NCAA Power Rankings in 2015. With just three weekends worth of dual meets since the beginning of December (and many teams competing only once), there's not a ton to report yet from most teams. To spice things up, we're keeping the rankings explanations shorter, and paying a bit more attention to some key milestones for a few teams (breaking into the top 10, the top 5, or winning NCAA's) .

Remember that these polls are primarily focused on end-of-season expectations, and aren't overly-reactive to dual meet results.

25. LSU TIGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #25)

24. SMU MUSTANGS (PREVIOUS RANK: #21)

23. KENTUCKY WILDCATS (PREVIOUS RANK: #23)

22. UNC TARHEELS (PREVIOUS RANK: N/A)

21. UCLA BRUINS (PREVIOUS RANK: #22)

20. PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS (PREVIOUS RANK: #20)

19. NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (PREVIOUS RANK: #18)

18. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (PREVIOUS RANK: #19)

17. INDIANA HOOSIERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #16)

16. AUBURN TIGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #17)

15. WISCONSIN BADGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #14)

14. MISSOURI TIGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #15)

13. LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (PREVIOUS RANK: #13)

12. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (PREVIOUS RANK: #12)

11. MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #11)

10. ARIZONA WILDCATS (PREVIOUS RANK: #10)

9. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS/WAHOOS/CAVAHOOS (PREVIOUS RANK: #8)

8. TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #9)

7. USC TROJANS (PREVIOUS RANK: #7)

6. FLORIDA GATORS (PREVIOUS RANK: #6)

5. TEXAS LONGHORNS (PREVIOUS RANK: #5)

4. TEXAS A&M AGGIES (PREVIOUS RANK: #4)

3. STANFORD CARDINAL (PREVIOUS RANK: #3)

2. CAL GOLDEN BEARS (PREVIOUS RANK: #2)

1. GEORGIA BULLDOGS (PREVIOUS RANK: #1)

For Texas: Gretchen Jacques has put together her best collegiate season so far, and Tasija Karosas has been one of the NCAA's breakout swimmers of the second half of the year so far. Questions remain, though, if (a) the Longhorns can maintain this momentum though March, and (b) if they have enough individual scorers to keep them in the top 5. At this point, it's Jacques (two likely A finals), a resurgent Sarah Denninghoff (two borderline A finals), Kelsey Leneave (two B finals), and Kaitlin Pawlowicz (one borderline A final, one borderline B final). A lot can change, but the 'Horns need a bit more than that to stay in the top 5 (diving, perhaps?).

For Texas A&M: With Liliana Ibez at or near 100%? They jump Maddy Schaefer-less Stanford. Without her? It'll be tough. Also maybe it's because she's been a perennial All-American, but we can't believe Sarah Henry is still in college.

For Stanford: What now without Maddy Schaefer? Of course, when you have Simone Manuel, Lia Neal, and Janet Hu on the roster, the relay loss isn't a death sentence, but the 20-25 individual points lost is enough to push them back a notch.

For Cal: Farida Osman has been great, but Marina Garcia still hasn't come around. She's on a better track than last year, but the Bears currently have giant question marks in the breaststrokes, which could cost them anywhere between 10-20 points in NCAA relays.

For Georgia: Okay maybe we don't have any big questions about Georgia right now.

Five reasons Georgia will win NCAA's:
1) Hali Flickinger has been outstanding
2) Two elite distance freestylers in Brittany MacLean and Amber McDermott
3) Three sprinters with lifetime bests of 22.0 or better (Olivia Smoliga, Chantel Van Landeghem, Maddie Locus)
4) More individual scoring depth than any other team
5) We made it through the first four points without explicitly mentioning Kylie Stewart, Jordan Mattern, Lauren Harrington, Megan Kingsley, or Annie Zhu

Missy's already got 4 A cuts (200 IM, 200 free, 100 free, 200 back) and 2 B cuts (50 free, 100 back). Thought Teri would want her to get a B cut in the 500 to leave that as an NCAA possibility, but if she just had a marginal B cut, she'd have to swim "blind" to qualify through the early heats and expend too much energy. Seems clear now that she's locked into the 200 IM on day 1, although I suppose she could go for an A cut in the 50 free at Pac-12s. Same thing applies for the 100 back, but I think her program is 200 IM/200 free/200 back. Interesting too see if Pelton swims the same events.

Missy taking on the "200 IM/200 free/200 back" combo @ NCAAs does seem to be a popular option among Swimswam commenters:

http://swimswam.com/cal-rolls-usc-home/

---------

bobo gigi: Missy's line-up at NCAAs?
200 IM/200 free/200 back?
or 200 IM/200 free/100 free?
or 200 free/200 back/100 free?
I'd prefer the first option. Then the second. And the third as a last resort.
If that's the first option, Missy and Liz would swim 3 times against each other.

---------

Champ: No way she does the 200 back and 100 free on the same day. If she does the 100 free she'll have her hands full with Simone Manuel and Lia Neal and she'll need to be fresh for it.

I think she does 200 IM/200 free/200 back. She'll battle Pelton for titles in the 200 IM and 200 back and easily win the 200 free, which will maximize the points she scores, and she won't be swimming races right after relays (i.e., the 200 free relay and 500 free). Also it would be a shame to not see her swim backstroke in her final NCAA's.

---------

bobo gigi: Totally agree.
Let's go with 200 IM/200 free/200 back!

Maybe ambushed is a better term for last years meet at SC. Cal came in last year in the midst of training and Salo had his squad rested and ready to race. If you compare Pelton's times 2014 vs 2015 you will see the difference. SC had a couple of horses last year (Carlson, Gardell) that were difference makers. Teri had Cal much better prepared this year as Pelton, Franklin and Osman amongst others were in top form despite not being rested.

Will be interesting to see how Teri plays out the rest of the season (LSJU meet, Pac-12s, NCAAs). Seniors have won all of those events, so think Teri puts all her eggs in the NCAA basket. She's going to have to rest/mini-taper some swimmers (Bing, Acker, Mau, Maija, Grima) at Pac-12s to improve their seeds/get them off the bubble/get them invites. Seniors are 1-2 vs LSJU, have gone 1,3,1 at Pac-12s, and have gone 1,2,3 at NCAAs. Bears and LSJU are pretty evenly matched this season, especially minus Schaeffer, so I'd guess that team doesn't rest for LSJU, rests only the aforementioned for Pac-12s, and lets it rip at NCAAs. I'm sure Missy would like a win vs LSJU, but a shot at another NCAA title (even as underdogs) is the way to go.

Wouldn't disagree on this at all, esp after Bears' (relatively) disappointing placing last March. Teri's held to a higher standard than practically any other collegiate swimming head coach, partly cause of her amazing NCAA history & record, so snagging the conference title isn't exactly her highest priority (unlike for most other programs). I'm sure she would gladly accept the Pac-12 trophy if that results as a byproduct of their intense preparations for the ultimate prize in March, but that isn't the end game and other than resting the aforementioned group to target their NCAA qualifying cuts @ Federal Way, I'd expect the main focus as always will be on preparing to be at their best @ Greensboro.

Always a +1 when we put down our beloved rivals from across the bay, and would of course be sweet to avenge last season's loss - but I can see it coming down to the wire @ the final relay, with the very distinct possibility we could lose this dual. Don't think the women will be rested at all for the dual, but Teri will test their character, mental resolve and team spirit in putting together some fast swims and doing the school proud against a very tough opponent who will also be aiming to fire on all cylinders...

Pelton, Franklin lead No. 3 Cal women's swim team to wins over USC, UCLA

http://www.dailycal.org/2015/02/03/pelton-franklin-lead-no-3-cal-womens-swim-team-wins-usc-ucla/

Under the soft conditions of the California winter sun, a brutal swim meet started to boil at the Bears' home territory, the Spieker Aquatics Complex. Steam arose from the familiar pool, releasing a chlorinated smell mixed with sweat and victory.

The No. 3 Cal women's swim team sought to justify its spot as one of the top ranked teams in the nation with a 197.5-102.5 victory Friday against USC and a 184-113 tally Saturday against No. 17 UCLA.

Heat after heat, event after event, swim after swim, the Bears glided across the surface of the 25-yard pool with a seeming ease of their strokes. On the benches, fans started to chant "Cal Bear relay!" as the USC swimmers rallied back with "Trojan relay!" It was the Bears' echo, however, that ultimately remained.

Associate head coach Kristen Cunnane was impressed by the will and strength demonstrated across the board both Friday and Saturday.

"I'm really proud of how the girls showed up today," Cunnane said after the meet against UCLA was concluded. "We caught fire yesterday, and one of the things we challenged them with was to keep that fire burning and to come out and be tough and ready to race."

The Bears proved their depth in the weekend's meets, capturing titles in both short- and long-distance swims. Freshman Cierra Runge demonstrated her strength in swimming long-distance events after winning the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle heats against UCLA and the 1,000-yard freestyle against USC.

Sophomore Missy Franklin and junior Elizabeth Pelton willed their bodies off the wall in the 200-yard backstroke against USC, while the announcer said, "you will remember this event forever." Pelton outraced Franklin, the long-term American record holder, in a split-second victory, 1:54.62 to 1:54.72.

"I think, on the last few turns, I looked underwater and saw that she was really close, so I sprinted from the flags in and hoped that it worked," Pelton said.

Pelton also seized the win in the 200-yard individual medley at the USC swim meet and the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events against UCLA.

After a disappointing 2013-14 season, the extremely versatile Olympic gold medalist Rachel Bootsma, a junior, racked up an abundance of points for the Bears. She captured victories in the 100-yard backstroke, and she was part of the winning 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay against USC. In Saturday's meet, Bootsma won the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle, and she was again part of the Bears' winning relays, the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Sophomore Farida Osman displayed her immense capabilities in the short-distance events, including winning in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle and finishing second in the 100-yard butterfly against USC. The day's success translated into Saturday, with wins in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.
Despite the pressure of clocking wins, the swimmers greeted each other with cordiality and goofy smiles in between events. Each Cal swimmer had a flash tattoo (a gold-leaf temporary tattoo) wrapped around her bicep, just to "have fun," as Osman said.

Franklin shook the hands of swimmers in neighboring lanes as she prepared to say good-bye to her collegiate career with her last meet as a Bear, a meet against Stanford, looming on the horizon.
"Definitely bittersweet," Franklin said. "I'm so proud of how I swam today and how we swam yesterday against USC. It was exciting. We really went out there and fought for it, so I'm so excited for the rest of the season, but also I'm really sad that I only have one more (dual meet) left.

Good news is that both teams have similar big picture goals and neither is likely to be rested. Meehan's a Durden protege and his team hit their taper at NCAAs better than the Bears did last season, although they finished ahead of the Bears simply because of a relay DQ. Bears have advantages in back, fly, IM, and distance(!), but LSJU has advantages in breast (huge), diving, and medley relays.

Other than pride, neither team has a huge incentive to beat the other if it throws them off their longer term goals. Both schools will compete for Katie Drabot and Alyssa Marsh in recruiting, but nobody's going to make a decision on either school strictly based on dual meet results.

Thanks for the link UAC. I agree that Georgia is the favorite to win it all in March, and that for Cal our weakness in breaststroke (sprint and depth) will be frustrating esp for our medley relays, but I think Swinswam is being a bit disingenuous in it's analysis of Georgia. IMHO the primary reason Georgia is such a heavy favorite is Laura Ryan, the returning champion diver in 1 and 3 meters and scorer of 56 points alone last March. Given the heavy bias that attaches to favorites in events that score on "form" points ala figure skating, Ryan will need to do a couple of belly flops not to return to the medal table.
Georgia does have a very deep squad with strength across all strokes except breast stroke, but they are very strong in sprint(50 and 100) and distance(500 and 1650) free, 400 IM and 200 Fly. But the Bears have the edge in 200 free relay, 200IM, 100 and 200 back, and the 800 free relay. But that diving margin will be very difficult to overcome.
BearDevil

Fortunately Laura Ryan has completed her NCAA eligibility. She competed for Indiana in 2011 and 2012 and for Georgia in 2013 and 2014. Georgia has a freshman diver, but she's not likely to score at NCAAs. LSJU has two potential diving scorers (Clay and Cook). Clay was 14th last year in one event. Cook has the higher ceiling, but she's been injured for two seasons.

Thanks BD, I had forgotten Ryan's years at Indiana. If the diving points are even between Georgia and Cal, then this race will truly be decided by how many swimmers the big 3 (Cal, Georgia and Stanford) can put into top 8 and bottom 8 races. And how many girls on the margin can squeeze into a top 8 spot versus a ninth place finish. For me the Cal questions are:

Does Acker round back into form and score in the 100 and 200 free?

Celina is such a terrific talent in the 200 and 400 IM. Can she score in a 3rd individual, either 200 fly or 200 breast?
Can Breed qualify and score in the 500?

Is Piehl a two event scorer-200 IM and 200 free?

Does Cheng place in the top 8 in the 200 free?

Klaren has been such a big scorer in the past. Can she produce again her 3 individuals: 500 free, 100 back and 200 back?

Bootsma looks like she is back in form and should be our top entry in the 100 back(even if Pelton swims the 100 back versus the 200 free on day 2). What will be Rachel's other two individuals: 200 IM, 100 fly and/or 200 fly. She is currently @ top 15 in each of those events so needs a pretty decent taper in each to be a major factor.

Whatever events the powers decide for Missy and Pelton, I am confident they will be ready to race. The same for Osman and Runge, although their menu of events are pretty well set. Noemie Thomas has great upside in her fly events and it would be great to see Mau qualify and score in the 200 fly, but that may be a stretch in her first year.

Can Naze have a break-out NCAA and score in the 200 back, 100 fly or either IM? She's been close but so far no (NCAA) cigar.

Good question. Not sure if comparing their finals times from last year's mid season semi-taper meet (AT&T Winter Nationals) with this year's (Georgia Invite) is a valid exercise, but somewhat worrying that Rachael was slower @ Athens than @ Knoxville in both the 100 and the 50 (the latter race not expected to be a scoring event for her tho). OTOH, Acker's been 2+ seconds faster in the 200 at the equivalent point this season, so if she can time her taper for a 3 to 4 secs drop @ NCAAs like last time round, would position her for potential double-digit points in the A final!

Making a very encouraging comeback from the look of things, though still a ways to go to return to the dominant game maker that she was in her freshman year. Keep in mind that everyone hasn't necessarily shown their cards fully or has yet to swim certain events rested. The 3 individual events limit will come into play, and of course the A & B cut qualification rules might bite more than a few of these swimmers if they don't meet those standards at their conference championships or in a last-minute time trial...

Thanks for all your hard work, UAC. Roughly the top 37-39 times in a given event will be invited to NCAAs and be eligible to swim up to 3 events where they have B cuts. Times will drop at conference meets, but if the cutoff were today, Bing, Acker, and Mau would be in and Breed, Maija, and Grima would be out. Looks like Breed never recovered from her injury. She doesn't even have a B cut in the 1650. Would be tough to an NCAA scorer her first two seasons and not get an invite as a senior.

What Does It Take To Qualify For NCAA's? List of Cutoff Times From 2014 NCAA Championships

In the Division I NCAA qualifying system, there are "A" standards, which earn an automatic invite to the NCAA Championship meet, and there are "B" standards, which both allow the next X number of swimmers to be invited to the meet, and additionally allows invited swimmers to swim bonus events in which they weren't invited.

Though nobody is a sure-fire invite until they get an A-cut or until the invite list comes out, every college coach in the country has some idea of the times that might safely earn an invite, even without officially being automatic. For example, a 4:38-high in the women's 500 free isn't automatically invited, but it's pretty close to a 'sure thing'.

At least we now know why 'SC and UCLA wore racing suits last week. During the alleged grading period, the Bears beat 3 of the 4 teams ranked ahead of them. Dual meet rankings are silly, but this one is absurd. Would have zero problems with the Bears being ranked behind Georgia, but this ranking is embarrassing.

Already this season she is within one second of that mark (1:40.31), and swimming faster in the event than she was last year. Going into the meet last season the American record was 1:41.21. Now, she's swimming times like that in-season which is what puts this swim on this list. Archive Photo via courtesy of Paul Younan)

#1 SIMONE MANUEL [STANFORD]- 100 FREESTYLE RELAY SPLIT 45.81
#2 COURTNEY BARTHOLOMEW [VIRGINIA] 100 BACK 50.01
#3 LEAH SMITH [VIRGINIA] 500 FREE 4:32.61

#4 MISSY FRANKLIN [CAL] 200 FREE 1:41.23
Missy Franklin can knock out a solid time in just about any event, but it seems as though the 200 freestyle is slowly becoming an in-season focus for her whenever she's swimming short course yards.
Last season she absolutely dominated the 200 free race at the NCAA Championships, taking almost a full second off the 200 free American record to win in 1:40.31.
Already this season she is within one second of that mark, and swimming faster in the event than she was last year. Going into the meet last season the American record was 1:41.21. Now, she's swimming times like that in-season which is what puts this swim on this list.

#5 JACK CONGER [TEXAS]- 200 FLY 1:40.34

#6 ELIZABETH PELTON [CAL] 200 BACK 1:49.00
Pelton is the American record holder in the 200 yard backstroke, so you can expect fast swims from her. A 1:49.00 in-season is a very fast swim and foreshadows the possibility of Pelton downing her own record this season. Last season, Pelton lost to Brooklynn Snodgrass at the NCAA Championships. With her 1:49.00 she's already a full second and a half faster than Snodgrass' winning time from last year.

#7 RYAN MUPHY [CAL] 200 BACK 1:39.32
Murphy is currently the most dominant swimmer in the backstroke events in the NCAA system and leads the way with top times in both the 100 and 200 yard backstrokes.
His season best in his 100 is almost equally as impressive as his 200, so it was very difficult deciding which was the better performance, but the 200 stood out just a little bit more.
His current 200 time would have came fourth at last year's NCAA championships, where he won, and falls just under two second shy of the NCAA record he set there. To swim a time like that in season shows that Murphy is on his mark and could possibly even challenge Ryan Lochte's American record in the event.

#8 JOSEPH SCHOOLING [TEXAS] 50 FLY RELAY SPLIT 20.05
#9 BRAD TANDY [ARIZONA] 50 FREE 19.04
#10 KIERRA SMITH [MINNESOTA] 200 Breast 2:05.12

Sounds like a realistic possibility that Missy may be training somewhere else. If she's talking about taking 20 years to get her degree, she's probably not going to be taking any classes even if she's still training in Berkeley. I'm sure some coaches will try to use it negatively in recruiting, but Natalie has trained with Durden for a few years and it hasn't hurt Teri's recruiting at all. Will be interesting to see how involved Teri will be in helping to select representation for Missy. May also be a little awkward in trying to give Missy feedback on various coaches/training groups since it's a bit of a conflict of interest. May be reading too much into things, but Teri mentioned swimmers from Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Hong Kong. Since nobody on the current men's and women's teams is from Greece, maybe a Freudian slip about a late recruit signing?

Kinda surprised that Teri said she'd have a weaker less versatile dual meet team next year. Losing Missy and Klaren will hurt flexibility, but the only area the team will be weaker is in distance. Better team in breast, fly, and medley relays. Baker will give Teri lots of options in duals. Maybe a more conventional dual meet team, but not necessarily a weaker dual meet team. Teri did say she didn't expect to be a weaker championship meet team.
