i am sure El Trumpo was planning to invade Mexico citing US national security and helping Mexico wipe out the drug lords and their paramilitaries that rule large swathes of Mexico.

I'm curious, the invasion is about a week old, and it is still front page news and the top news story of the day. However, it looks like the invasion is going to be a longer more protracted war than initially thought.

How long until the invasion is no longer front page news, and starts being covered by mainstream news after the first commercial break? I'm guessing two more weeks as people will get bored of the story rather soon. Sure, if something major happens, it will rise up to the top story, but day to day updates will not be given the same coverage.

The compelling "Where is Hunter's Laptop?" scandal has already pushed the Ukraine Invasion story pretty far down the Fox News website opening page.

A year ago this Ukrainian teenager was singing about world peace.

Teaching the world about Ukraine

This week she is a war correspondent.

She is wrapping herself in the Ukrainian flag/colors; very attractive blue and gold.

California should temporarily adopt these colors as a show of solidarity.

Sieges are good television- explosions and destruction.. Guerilla resistance is more random and less interesting

This all depends on whether or not Putin makes dramatic new choices in where to send his military. If they just get bogged down where they are now, yes, people will get bored.

Not surprising. This is happening all over Europe, partly as a reaction to increased immigration and Neoliberal austerity measures, which depress wages & salaries for a majority of working people; and partly as a heavily-promoted right-wing/populist/authoritarian social media campaign.

There's a very informative series of documentary videos on Europe's right-wing movement. Poland is downright nasty AF.

My grandparents faced racist persecution in that very town in Poland a century ago so I wouldn't be so quick to assume that neoliberal (lol) austerity measures are to blame. Do you think neoliberals were throwing tomatoes at my 8 year old grandmother 100 years ago while she was walking to school?

Racism and antisemitism in Europe are far older than the concept of neoliberalism (whatever it means).

As in the U.S., it's a variety of reasons. Hard to differentiate the impact of economic austerity policies from the social (women's rights, LGBTQ rights, etc.). The Catholic Church has always been a powerful influence in Poland. Like the U.S., the economic policies generate the anger & discontent, while the "culture wars" inflame the emotions, amplified over social media.

IMO, this is the natural result of 40+ years of Milton Friedman / Chicago School economics, where the free flow of Labor and Capital across international boundaries is the ideal, as it results in lower wages overall.

[As I've mentioned before, I think Friedman is wrong. In the U.S., Reagan stopped enforcing the laws against employers' hiring of undocumented immigrants. This lowered low-end wages in the U.S., and helped to transform the U.S. and Europe from high wage/salary economies to low wage/salary economies (Neoliberal/austerity).]

Absolutely.

Neoliberalism brought a combination of austerity and immigration, inflaming prejudices that were centuries old, in many cases.

No. Racism is as old as the human race.

Neoliberal policies inflamed the racism that existed for centuries.

going4roses, this is exactly what I'm talking about with people using the word neoliberal instead of conservative because they hate liberals more than they do the conservative policies they are complaining about.

How do you think racists should be appeased? And similarly, do you blame women for provoking their abusive spouses? Or do you just blame neoliberals?

What you are saying may have been true after the wall fell but is not true now. Poland has an authoritarian right wing populist government that has virtually banned abortion, restricted democratic and legal norms and is violently anti-immigrant. The same government has greatly increased social programs including minimum wage, generous child subsidies, and increased pensions.

The result is a nationalist, pro church, pro family and ethnically homogeneous( read white) country with generous welfare programs.

Ironically, though Poland is of course anti- Russian, their current politics and culture mirrors the Russians more closely than it does France. Germany or Italy

I just want to know if this invasion is over yet. Because first I heard it was never going to happen, then I heard that Putin would stop in the Eastern provinces and of course these same folks now tell me that he'll be done once he takes Ukraine. And it's really all our fault this is happening, because we allowed Ukraine to apply for NATO membership 14 years ago. The fact that those plans were shelved a couple of decades past is irrelevant.

Bottom line sometimes a cigar is a cigar and the sometimes the "fault" lies with the autocratic nut sitting at the end of the 90 foot table who is willing to kills tens of thousands and displace millions to recreate Czarist Russia. It's not Milton Friedman and it's not Ronald Reagan and it's not the Easter Bunny. Not sure we need to really work too hard to figure this one out.

I understand your point, I believe. In the very beginning it would be more accurate to call it tribalism. It evolved to xenophobia and racism over time as humans spread out and started to adapt to and settle in new environments.

Immigration and the backlash to such also well predate the existence of "neoliberalism."

Same with austerity. Once upon a time the big debate in America was whether or not to end the gold standard.
